This book launched a craze...

This is the book (and the man...) who m.o.l. single-handedly "created" the canoe-cruising craze which swept the Continent (especially Great Britain) during the last half of the 19th century, early 20th. Most would now consider his style of "cruising" too Spartan for our accustomed comfort(s) but he DID prove by demonstration that ANYone could go cruising and at very moderate cost. I'd give it high marks for writing quality and "style" although with "modern" boat-building techniques and materials and foul-weather/survival fabrics some of his recommendations are out dated. But the general tone of adventurous endeavor is appealing to anyone who has ever wondered what lay "over the horizon" from his familiar surroundings. The man was definitely not afraid to try out his ideas and this may inspire others to try theirs....

The auther, a man of considerable education, means and ego, tells of the 1887 sailing of his 21 foot yawl, Rob Roy.
Not written in the pleasant narrative of Joshua Slocum, (Sailing Alone Around The World) of his 1895-1898 voyage.
