Makes God (Jesus) more accessable

I couldnt put this book down! It shows us how much God (Jesus) loves us! How He came to earth to "walk in our shoe's" and that He isnt some diety that we cant have for a friend and Savior! This devotional book is one that I recommend to everyone weather they are saved or not! It tells of how He yearns for a relationship with us and how He wants so much for us to just accept His gifts of love and salvation! It's as if God (Jesus) Himself is talking to you personally, its amazing how you get caught up in it and begin to feel as if God is talking to you personally as you read it. If your already a Christian this book will draw you closer to God...give you a more clear understanding of Him and His love! If your not a Christian, you will have a new understanding of what God is like and how much He loves you, how He is reaching out to you and waiting patiently for you to just give Him a chance to come into your life and show you His Love, Grace, Mercy, understanding, and most of all His deep desire to have you come into His Kingdom! This is a must read!

I am fortunate enough to be from the same area Phillip Keller lived and was able to hear him speak on a number of occasions. He was a man who truly knew God, and that fact shines through in "What is the Father Like?". It is a wonderful devotional look at God's nature and His attitude towards His children. Written in the first person, Keller shows the tender, loving heart of God and draws the reader into a deeper understanding of God as our Father. It is an indispensable book in dark times and a must read for all Christians.

I have recently completed Experiencing God by Blackaby and Breaking Free by Beth Moore. What is the Father is Like? goes along with those ideas perfectly. I have not been able to put this book down. It is wonderful to discover how much the Father loves us and desires to know us.

After buying Jahiel's HORSE TRAINING PROBLEM SOLVER, I sought out her other PROBLEM SOLVER books. This one is as good as the others, and like the others is applicable to both the beginner and the advanced rider. Jahiel follows the same horsewoman's philosophy that I do: Do what's best for the horse. The Q&A format of the book makes it fun to read, and even as an experienced horsewoman I found tips that I could use, every day. For any rider facing challenges, chances are good that you'll find the answer from Jahiel. Your horse will have a happier life when you apply her sensible--and even more important, compassionate--advice.

It's a weird but almost innocent existence, until Jack persuades Josie to seduce the pharmacist's son, Kevin, so they can score some drugs. When Josie falls for Kevin, Jack beats him senseless because he can't bear to share her. But because gorgeous, brilliant, magnetic Jack is the only person who's ever shown Josie love, she persists in her blind devotion to him. After a startling betrayal of their father, Jack and Josie leave home and leech off a string of women whom Jack easily, cruelly charms. But the women grow suspicious of the siblings' relationship, with good reason. Things can only end badly, of course, which happens when Lily, Jack's latest victim, confronts him about their atypical relationship. Braffet roils a reader to crave to find out what happens next, not because her main characters are figures to root for -- pity the bystanders in their path -- but because she has paced their often appalling adventures at a quick, sustained rhythm. The second half of the book, when our modern Hansel and Gretel run away to New York, beats faster still. Forsaking their house, and the groping, alcoholic sameness of their days there, they find the trip is rich with suspense. Besides the two biggest questions of this compelling book -- Will Josie ever escape the thrall of Jack, and if so how will she do it? -- there's the bonus anxiety of the two most important, most mysterious questions of those new to New York: Where will they live and how the hell will they pay for it? She feels as though she's lost her anchor, but it isn't long before he comes back for her, to take her to live with him in Erie, Pennsylvania, where he is staying with a girl named Becka. But Josie and Jack's relationship has never been one to permit outsiders for long, and soon the pair is adrift and headed for disaster. Relationship In A Bottle

Isolated and incestuous, Josie and Jack are inseparable teenage siblings who when faced with the necessity to function in a larger world stumble disastrously. Their story of hermetic love fueled by wanton self-indulgence of epic proportionality takes place in the almost complete absence of parenting. Mother, whose elusive presence in the lives of her children is magnified by her absence, has obliterated herself suicidally when Josie and Jack are four and six years of age respectively. And their frighteningly abusive, megalomaniacal father is home only on weekends throughout the years when guidance and care are so critical to the development of character and the values by which to structure one's life. Furthermore, the children are excused from attending school as father delusionally believes that what he has to impart in the way of grandiose instruction of esoteric, paranoidly tinged subject matter somehow suffices as a curriculum with which to prepare his offspring for their future lives. The mix of perverse love kindled in a vacuum, prodigious amounts of alcohol and pharmaceuticals, and misguided efforts to promote and protect a precious sense of overweening self-importance in this truncated family of three inevitably detonates in Kelly Braffet's first novel in ways that never fail to surprise and astonish. Braffert has crafted an exhilarating narrative that speeds toward its explosive conclusion just as a car driven by an intoxicated madman might careen down the wrong direction of a six lane superhighway. To say the least, Josie And Jack is keenly observed, psychologically astute, and deadly accurate in its depiction of what will transpire when children are led to buy into the lie that they are so special they can function outside of natural law. Transgression as an expression of disdain for basic limits in interpersonal relations almost always ends in exquisite suffering and emotional chaos. With Kelly Braffet we encounter a master at delineating this splintered terrain of pain and ineluctable sorrow.

A "Wait a minute" story...

In the west is a scraggly. scratchy bush that snags as you walk by it- and holds you within its grasp- we jokingly call it a "Wait a minute" bush...Josie and Jack is a "Wait a minute" book for the same reasons- it snags you from the first paragraph- holds you securely and won't let you go til you finish the book as quickly as possible. Darkly consuming and very addictive- Kelly Braffet is the new literary drug! A very good read proving story telling is still alive and well. Bravo!!

An incredible read

Kelly Braffet's debut novel is the kind of book you remember for a long time after you've put it down. It's creepy and dark, but the central character, Josie, puts a remarkably level-headed spin on the madness around her. Josie is one of the most weirdly endearing characters I've met in fiction in quite some time - and her sexy, twisted brother Jack is one of the most indelible. Josie and Jack is a must read!

One of Dover's best plan books

Printed on heavy glossy stock, this collection of reproductions from the Jens Pedersen mail-order plan catalog is especially notable for its avoidance of one of Dover's common weaknesses, the so-small-it-needs-a-magnifying-glass plan. The book's designers have managed to make most of the plans a nice readable size, and each includes a full-color print of the exterior and a brief description of the house. Most of these homes have a footprint of less than 900 square feet, but they're livably arranged and some have as many as four bedrooms. These are houses that may well have lasted to this day, and deservedly so. There's also a good explanatory introduction especially written for this edition. Anyone curious about 1920's domestic architecture, especially of the humbler and less expensive type, should have this title in their collection.

Houses of the 1920's

It was a very interesting look-back at houses built int he 20's, as was mine. I noticed that there were very few houses that had 2 bathrooms. Mine only has one as well but does not have the number of bedrooms in most of those. I enjoyed it so much. I have ordered more of these yesteryear book because it is a hobby of mine to look at house plans.

Jens Pedersen originally wanted to call his plan book "Pedersen's Perfect Plans." I'd love to know who talked him out of that title. You can find these houses all over St. Paul. My dollhouse was a version of one of his houses, when he was into his oval-glass-in-wooden front door phase.

This book is everything I anticipated and more. I really like the format: it *is* a step by step guide, but not a hard and fast training method or inflexible plan. It has accurate and current information in all respects. All the details a person needs to know are there! This is a book I will refer to frequently and I do not feel the need to double-check that the information is accurate.

First foaling

As an old horsewoman attending her aged mare having her first foal, I was feeling in great need of advice and counsel. This book delivered it. We had everything in place well ahead of time, and the whole thing went like clockwork. I knew exactly when to rip the bag and when to assist with some gentle traction. I hope everyone is blessed with such a textbook delivery. But if you aren't, this primer should see you through until the vet comes.

Great resource for learning to draw tonal values.

If you've asked the question, "how do you make up values from imagination?", this book can help you. It's a little verbose sometimes, but definitely worth wading through a few extra words to get the knowledge. The principles of light, shade and shadow are laid out and explained in detail, and there are exercises to follow along with in the back. It's a small book, not even 70 pages, but it packs a lot of information. Very helpful book for anyone wishing to learn more about drawing/painting lights, shades and shadows.

The battles are vividly described and thoughtfully analyzed."

Sad to say, there wasn't much to the third story, though the gunboat battle in #4 picked up the pace, and the overrun Special Forces camp at Lang Vei in #6 was rather exciting. (Those were some tough men facing the first successful use of Vietnamese armor (163), and it didn't help events that there was a great deal of confusion about who was Viet Cong and who was CIDG.) I admire those who endured a calm and collected death (24-25), expended all their ammo against the enemy (118), and/or kept returning to aid others at the front, however exhausted they might be (167-168).

One must appreciate the different mode of combat, when it was a "rare opportunity" to openly engage "any concentration of forces" (105). Vietnam was more about conducting warfare against "an aggressive, expertly camouflaged, and well-armed enemy force that could shoot well and was not afraid to die" (24). There was considerable difficulty creating landing locations (40, 109) in the jungle.

I rather liked the streamlined soldierly language of precision, which apprises one fully of overall troop movements as well as individual heroic actions, to say nothing of the reports of brave Americans about whom it was said that "piles of enemy dead in front of the positions testified to the enemy's tactical failure"

About the Author

Authors

John Albright served in Vietnam as a captain in the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment and participated in the action, “Convoy Ambush on Highway1.”  He received the B.A. degree from Oklahoma State University and is engaged in graduate study at  The American University.  He has served two short terms in Vietnam as a civilian historian while employed in the Office of the Chief of Military History.

 

John A. Cash, Major, Infantry, an experienced officer, serviced in Vietnam as a company commander and as a member of a brigade operations staff in the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the latter capacity participating in the action, “Fight at Ia Drang.”  He also served two short tours in Vietnam as a historian on special missions for the Office of the Chief of Military History, to which he was involved in action, “Gunship Mission.” Major Cash holds the B.A. and M.A. degrees in history from Rutgers University and the M.A. from the University of Wisconsin.

 

Allan W. Sandsturm, Lieutenant Colonel, Field Artillery, served on the G-3 staff of I Field Force, Vietnam.  He received the B.A. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles nd the M.A. degree in history from the University of Texas at El Paso. Colonel Sandstrum is currently assigned to the Office of the Chief of Military History.

War-Profiteering Isn't Limited to Arms Sales...It now includes hastily-repackaged public domain free military history books!!!

This is no-doubt a classic, important, excellent work. A terrific and instructional read.

So why the single-star?!? Because enough is enough. I am sick and tired of finding freely available military history books hastily posted for sale on Amazon by greedy fly-by-night individuals trying to make a quick buck off the hard work of the real authors by taking freely available public domain material and trying to pass it off as their own - all the while ripping off Amazon Kindle customers and disrespecting the real authors.

Seven Firefights in Vietnam is a perfect example:
It's freely available on the Internet, and Kindle customers can simply use the "Send to Kindle App" to read the free versions of books such as this one on their Kindle devices or Kindle apps. What's more, the flashier the cover - the higher the price charged by these type of rip-off artists. This is quite common. In fact, in the case of Seven Firefights in Vietnam, This edition will cost you $7.96 or better said, this flashy cover will cost you $7.96! If you check under "Formats" - Notice that there is a link to the exact same book with the original non-flashy cover for $2.99! A quick search shows that there is a 3rd Kindle edition for just $2.75 (This one from Pickle Partners Publishing - who happen to be one of the main offenders when it comes to reselling free public domain military books!).

The average price of a Kindle book has sky-rocketed as publishers take advantage of the growing popularity of ebooks to make a quick and greedy buck. If that wasn't discouraging enough, more and more unscrupulous "publishers" are re-posting free public domain military books and ripping us off not to mention insulting the true authors.

Below is a short list of terrific publicly-accessible military history websites that contain 1000s of free, top-notch works mostly in PDF format that can easily be sent to your Kindle device or app using "Send to Kindle" from your computer. They are worth checking out for anyone interested in military history, almost all resources are free, updates are frequent, and in fact many of these sites are the very sources of the re-posted & for-profit Kindle books that you see more and more often on Amazon! Why put a single penny in these "War-History-Profiteers'" pockets?!?

Many excellent books available for free on the download page such as Vanguard of Valor Volumes I & II (Afghanistan small unit action) and Tip of the Spear (Iraq small unit action). All 3 of these free books appear as hastily repackaged Kindle books from at least 5 different profiteers and range in price from $1.99 to $9.99 or higher. Opportunistic, greedy "publishers" simply add an a eye-catching cover (that surely contain photographs taken without permission) and shamelessly re-sell these public domain works as their own. To add insult to injury, in their haste to profit from the work of others, these fly-by-night pseudo-publishers most often produce an inferior repackaging of the original books - rife with typos, formatting errors, missing content, maps, and photos, etc.

I bought this book because I was in Vietnam 66-67 and one of the battles described I was in, my wife is always asking me about Vietnam and I don't like to talk about my time there, bought the book so she could read, she doesn't ask me anymore, so it served it's purpose.

Very Good Book

The book I read, Seven Firefights in Vietnam, was a very interesting book. I enjoyed this book very much and was always anxious to read on to see what would happen next. Books on Vietnam, such as this one, had always caught my interest. This book, written by John A. Cash, John Albright and Allan W. Sandstrum, all Vietnam veterans, was always action-packed and very detailed keeping this book very exciting. As I read on, the book kept pulling me in and in, and by that time it felt like that I was in the frontlines fighting alongside. With this book, with such excellent quality. I would recommend Seven Firefights in Vietnam to anyone who is interested in warfare.
