Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (Dover Philosophical Classics), by David Hume

How can we know that God exists? Is it possible to find proof of religion's most significant issues? Can we presume that the orderliness of the universe offers evidence of a purposeful creator? David Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion explores these perennial questions in a thought-provoking and highly readable style.
This classic examines its controversial subject in the well-known manner of the Platonic dialogues. Hume's characters discuss God's existence, his divinity and attributes, and the reasons behind his creation of the world. In clear, evocative prose, the debate's participants state and defend their positions, most of which center on the concept currently known as Intelligent Design. Hume's intense skepticism provides ingenious, persuasive refutations of the notion that reason and logic provide support for religious dogma. A work of historical importance as well as of ongoing relevance to modern life, this volume endures as both an inspiring philosophical inquiry and a literary gem.

About the Author
David Hume (1711-1776) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Western philosophy and the Scottish Enlightenment. Hume is often grouped with John Locke, George Berkeley, and a handful of others as a British Empiricist. During his lifetime, Hume was famous both as a philosopher and as a historian. Although his first work, A Treatise of Human Nature was not a commercial success, his An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding and his An Enquiry concerning the Principles of Morals were both published in ten editions by 1777, often as part of his equally popular Essays and Treatises on Several Subjects. These works continued to be published often in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Hume also published, from 1754-62, a popular six-volume History of England. By 1900 close to 200 editions of this history, including an abridged Student's Hume had been published.

Is God Knowable By Reason?
By Kevin Currie-Knight
David Hume made a reputation by writing on reason and its limits. The main thrust of the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is to question whether theological arguments for God that assign Him positive attributes (omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, etc.) go beyond reason's limits in assigning these attributes. We watch Cleanthes (believer in theological arguments), Demea (believer more on faith) and Philo (disbeliever in theology's efficacy) hash out whether reason and experience alone give us reason to say anything whatever about God.

Hume explores all of the major arguments for God's existence. First, the a posteriori argument is explored; the argument that just as seeing a house gives us reason to assume an architect and builder, seeing the world should give us reason to infer a designer. Hume (through the skeptical voice of Philo) sees much wrong with this argument. Why? Because the reason we infer a builder for a house is because experience has shown us that houses have builders, thus when we see a house, we assume that, like other houses we've seen, this one too has a builder. But experience does not tell us that where there is a world, there is a designer. The leap is extra-experiential. Further, even if we DID infer a designer, why infer just one? Houses have construction crews of multiple people; if we analogize between the house and the world, then why not infer that the world, too, might have infinite creators? (And why infer that the world's creator is omnipotent, if all that is needed to create something is to be more powerful than the thing created - no more, no less?)

Next, we go through the a priori argument - the argument from first cause. Hume (Philo) is quick to point out the obvious flaw with this. If everything needs a cause, then what caused God? If God is said to be eternally existing, then why couldn't the natural world - rather than God - be thought eternal instead? And further, why is a infinite chain of causes and effects so unimaginable, anyhow? (Isn't it just as sensical as an eternal God itself not caused?)

Lastly, Philo brings up the argument from evil. In a nutshell, Philo suggests that while theology sees all the perfections of the world, proclaiming them clear evidence of remarkable design, theologians dismiss or downplay the imperfections. If God is said to all-good Himself, then why did he create humans with such flaws? (one assumes that an all-powerful, all-good God could have avoided those errors).

Still, the main thrust of this book is that Philo, far from challenging whether God exists, challenges theologies capacity to assign ANY characteristics to God by reason and experience alone. Hume does a good job not only in outlaying arguments as to why reason is not capable of knowing a thing about God, but also in making believable dialogues (compared to Plato, whose characters are all made to be one-dimensional foils for "Socrates.") As in so many other areas, Hume was a pioneer in the realm of the philosophy of God. This book furnishes strong proof of that!

A Paradigm of Philosophy
By ctdreyer
With the possible exception of his incalculably influential A Treatise of Human Nature, this, I think, is Hume's finest work. The Dialogues is a paradigm of sustained philosophical argumentation on a single subject, and I can't think of a more inspiring work of philosophy. Another reason to read this book is that Hume is one of the few philosophical figures whose work is worth reading as literature. His prose is, of course, lovely and clear as can be; and the Dialogues is packed with the sort of evocative passages that readers of Hume except to find in his work. Furthermore, he's clearly mastered the dialogue format as a way of writing philosophy. He never turns his interlocutors into ciphers spouting the details of their respective positions. Each character has a forceful and distinct personality, and each of them comes to the debate with a well-defined position and adequate means of defending it. In short, I can't recommend this book highly enough.
Most of the Dialogues is devoted to discussion of a posteriori arguments for the existence of God. The main argument considered here is the classical argument from design, which Hume seems to understand as an analogical argument of the following sort: the complexity and order of the universe show that it is similar to artifacts created by human intelligences; similar causes have similar effects; therefore, the universe must have been created by a being with something like a human intelligence; therefore, the universe must have been created by God.
Hume's objections to this argument are legion, and many of the individual objections are both ingenious and forceful. He provides reasons for thinking that the universe isn't all that similar to artifacts created by human beings. He argues, for instance, that at least in some respects, the universe resembles animal or vegetable life more than it resembles artifacts created by human beings. Hume also provides for thinking that, even if we think the universe is similar to a human artifact, we ought to think the universe was created by a being quite unlike God. The relevant empirical evidence, he argues, provides us with no good reason to think that the universe wasn't created by multiple beings (large human artifacts are usually created by multiple beings), or that the being(s) who created it are still alive (human creators die), or that the being(s) who created it were infinite (it's not clear that creating the finite universe would have required infinite power), or that the being(s) who created it were morally perfect (the universe, with all its misery and despair, certainly isn't what one would expect from a perfect being). Furthermore, he proposes certain alternative naturalistic explanations of the existence and nature of the universe; and he claims that it's unclear why an appeal to divine creation is to be preferred to these speculative naturalistic stories of the universe's creation.
As I hope this all-too-brief synopsis suggests, Hume's cumulative case against the argument from design is quite impressive. It is, of course, possible to avoid some of these criticisms in various ways, and his speculative naturalistic explanations leave quite a bit to be desired. But the total case is a philosophical demolition par excellence. Indeed, I'm pretty sure that Hume has shown that the argument from design is more or less worthless as support for anything resembling traditional theism. So, if you're enamored of that argument, I suggest you pick up book and wrestle with the criticisms found here.
Now, this isn't all Hume discusses in the Dialogues. There's a section discussing a priori arguments for the existence of God; it focuses on arguments against a version of the cosmological (i.e. first cause) argument. And Hume's arguments concerning the cosmological argument also rule out any sort of ontological argument, as he claims that no sense can be made of the idea of a necessarily existing being. The book also includes a few some brief discussion of particular issues concerning religion.
Where, in the end, does Hume come down on the issue of theism? It's hard to tell, as it's not clear that any of the particular characters speaks for him. Philo, the character who often appears to be speaking for him, never denies the existence of a deity; he simply denies the ability of human reason to discover anything substantial about what such a being is like. That Hume agrees with this is, I think, the most we can glean from this text about Hume's own religious views. It seems clear that he has no sympathy for organized religion, or for any religious views that purport to describe the nature of God, His intentions, or how and why He created the universe as He did. And the only positive religious claim that is given respectful treatment here is the bare claim that we have reason to think that the cause of the universe as a whole is somewhat similar to a human intelligence.
But does acceptance of this minimal thesis amount to his being a theist? Again, it's very hard to tell. First, of course, one might wonder whether this fairly vague positive view is enough to amount to some form of theism. But let's put that issue to one side. Even if it is enough to support some form of theism, it's often difficult to tell whether Hume means to be advocating such a position here. The problem is that it often seems Hume's explicit advocation of this position amounts to little more than a description of what he thinks is an inevitable human tendency to think this way. Given how our minds actually work, he seems to think, we're bound to think something like this about the origin of the universe. Yet it's somewhat unclear that he thinks forming beliefs in this way is reliable. It may simply be that we have a brute instinct to think in a way that insures we'll see the world as resulting from some human-like intelligence, and it's at least not clear that that isn't a debunking account of the plausibility of theism. (For more support that this is a debunking explanation, see his The Natural History of Religion, where the explanations of various religious beliefs certainly seem to be one's that suggest those beliefs simply aren't plausible.)

Hume's Posthumous Classic
By R. Albin
This short and artfully written book was published after Hume's death. Hume did not wish to experience the controversy engendered by the arguments advanced in the book. It is likely as well that Hume was concerned also with offending some of the moderate Presbyterian clergy who were his personal friends and had been his partisans in other controversies. This book is primarily an attack on the idea that the exercise of reason and logic provides support for religion, and particularly that application of reason leads to strong evidence for the existence of a beneficient God. This line of thought had become particularly popular among liberal theologians in the first half of the 18th century and was a widely held notion among Enlightenment intellectuals across Europe and North America. This idea is still widely held today and can be seen in the writings of the so-called 'intelligent design' advocates of creationism. Hume's criticisms, then, are not only of historic interest but continue to have relevance to our contemporary lives.
The Dialogues are constructed as a 3 cornered argument between three friends. Demea, a man upholding revealed religion against the idea that reason provides support for the existence of God. Cleanthes, an advocate of natural religion. Philo, a skeptical reasoner who attacks the positions held by Demea and Cleanthes. For those who like Hume's sprightly 18th century style, this is a fun book to read. Hume artfully divides some of his strongest arguments between Cleanthes and Philo, and gives the Dialogues the real sense of a dispute among 3 intelligent friends. Philo is generally taken to represent Hume's positions but Cleanthes articulates some strong arguments and provides some of the best criticisms of Demea's fideism. Much of the book is devoted to attacking the argument from design, which Cleanthes attempts to defend against assaults from Philo and Demea. In many ways, the argument from design is the major idea of those supporting the natural religion approach to existence of God. Hume's critique is thorough and powerful. It even includes an anticipation of Darwin's idea's of selection, though the basis for Hume's critique is primarily epistemological. In the later parts of the book, Hume attacks also the comsological argument for the existence of God, though this discussion is relatively brief and a bit confusing. Hume's analysis is consistent broadly with much of his philosophical work. In many ways, his great theme was the limitations of reason, and this book is an example of his preoccupation with the relatively limited role of reason in establishing certain facts about the universe. He finishes with short criticisms of the idea that religion is needed for a stable and well ordered society and defends the usefullness of skeptical reasoning.
It is important to view the Dialogues as part of a critique of religion that Hume sustained in several works. His Natural History of Religion, the On Miracles section of the Enquiry Concerning Human Understacing, and other essays comprise a broad criticism of religion. Other pillars of religion, such as the existence of miracles and revelation, are criticized in his other work. While Hume denied being an atheist and was apparently disturbed by the dogmatic atheism of French philosophes he met in Paris, he was certainly not religous in any conventional sense.
This is a short and very readable book but the power of its arguments are totally out of proportion to its length.

From Publishers Weekly
Food and travel writer Salloum (From the Land of Figs and Olives) notes in his introduction that Middle Eastern and northern African populations have relied on a vegetarian diet since the beginning of civilization, despite the lamb and chicken dishes that may spring to the mind of anyone with a nodding acquaintance (meat is a rarity often reserved for special occasions). Setting the record straight with over 300 vegetarian dishes, Salloum's culinary tour gives readers the chance to eat like the locals do. While there are plenty of recipes utilizing common ingredients (30 chickpea recipes, 19 eggplant dishes and a dozen featuring dates), Salloum also offers unusual combinations such as Pomegranate and Mushroom Soup and Tumeric-Flavored Eggs, using garlic, cilantro and tomato in addition to the subtle, noble spice ("much in demand at birth, marriage, and death ceremonies). Pancakes are stuffed with a sweetened and spiced ricotta cheese or a walnut, cinnamon and sugar filling, then cooked and dipped in Qater, a simple syrup infused with orange flower water and lemon juice. Including the Arabic names for every dish and boasting recipes for homemade yogurt, multiple takes on falafel and a multitude of stews and soups, most of which come together in minutes, Salloum's collection will be welcome, illuminating resource for vegetarians and omnivores alike.

Quick, healthy, and tasty "recipes" for the meditteranean eater.
By Sophie
I'm sure most people reading about "vegetarian middle-eastern" cookbooks are good cooks when they have the time and inclination. But I, for one, have grown bored with my own repertoire. Most cookbooks are more fun to read than to actually cook from. Or they have ingredients that, even living in New York City, seem annoyingly inaccessible.

This book has lots of very easy recipes that are healthy vegetarian (hardly any animal fat with the exception of yoghurt in cold dishes). I can imagine actually(!) making just about everything, there's even a section on arab desserts -- the easy kind made of farina. This is probably the best cookbook I've ever bought. I think it's useful whatever your level of cooking expertise, but you need to be a fan of the meditterranean diet. We're talking beans, legumes, olive oil, yoghurt, eggplant, a few other vegetables.

Recipe details:-- it's true most are simple, but unless you were raised in a middle-eastern family I don't know how you would've thought of these combinations -- even if you're say very familiar with Greek or Italian food, I think this is pretty new stuff.

Some "recipes" include: yoghurt ginger appetizer (includes almonds, onions, ginger, tomato);many types of lentil soups from various middle eastern countries (the egyptian one includes butter and cumin, the one from bahrain adds tomato, vermicelli, and ground coriander);fried pepper salad; orange and olive salad; beet salad; stuffed eggplant; and vegetable casserole.

Nothing sounds 'exciting' but it is all very accessible and well seasoned. It's like you could turn to this book and make every meal from it -- that is if you like meditterranean food.

Luxurious, Simple and Healthy Eating

Vegetarian dishes can be boring sometimes. You can only do so much with a can of chickpeas, or an eggplant or even a salad. Not so with Habeeb Salloum's Classic Vegetarian Cooking from the Middle East and North Africa. Presenting dishes from all over these regions, Mr. Salloum's recipes inspire the cook to garnish a table with these non-meat dishes. With an introduction and historical explanation of these dishes, preparation of the meals comes easy and the mouth watering delights even more enjoyable when eaten. Twenty-five recipes prepared so far and all have had a 100% review from family and friends. No kitchen should be without it!

A Rich and Treasured Book
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book not only for the recipes but for the insights in to the part food plays in the everyday lives and culture of the people of the Middle East and North Africa. Salloum gives a brief history of most of the dishes and places them in geographical and cultural context. I enjoyed reading it as much for the delicious food as the explainations. My only criticism would be that there are no pictures in the book so a novice cook like myself has little idea of how to serve the recipes. A minor quibble... it is a lovely book and has delicious, tasty recipes.

Decent job
By this art guy
"The Nature of the Visual Illusion" does a pretty decent job of characterizing and explaning exactly what the title implies. I like how this author involved some alternative concepts other than the same old optical illusions that we see all the time. He covers basic visual functions more. I also recommend "the science of illusions" by Jacques Ninio.

The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers, by Diogenes Laertius

The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers, originally written in Greek likely sometime during the 4th century A.D. , is a collection of biographies on dozens of philosophers. For many of the philosophers discussed, it remains one of the only existing texts of ancient source material.

A table of contents is included.

About the Author
Little is known about the life as Diogenes Laertius except that he lived circa 3rd century CE. He must have lived after Sextus Empiricus (c. 200 CE), whom he mentions, and before Stephanus of Byzantium and Sopater of Apamea (c. 500 CE), who quote him.

Ian Myles Slater on: A Flash of Light in the Darkness
By Ian M. Slater
Diogenes Laertius (or, Laertios in the original Greek, instead of the customary, Latin, spelling) is the name of a compiler of biographies of philosophers; he is thought to have been active in the third century A.D., but possibly a little earlier or later (see the Wikipedia article on him for the range of possible dates, the possible sources of the name, and other details). The "Lives" shine rather narrow beams of light on thinkers who quite commonly took the whole universe as their topic, concentrating on what the compiler either thought his readers would want to know, or on the slender information he actually had. Even granting that he provides an authentic quotation, figuring out what a philosopher may have meant from Diogenes' context can be a challenge.

The author of "Lives of Eminent Philosophers" is not to be confused with Diogenes the Cynic (a contemporary of Plato and Aristotle), best-known these days either for asking Alexander the Great not to block the sun, or for going about with a burning lamp in daylight, explaining that he was looking for an honest man. Or, for that matter, any other of the fairly numerous bearers of the name.

His ten-book compilation seems to be the survivor of a genre of digests of knowledge which were popular in late classical times, summarizing the heritage of the Greek past for the would-be-learned. The information he offers ranges from the demonstrably inaccurate to the apparently trustworthy; his final book, on Epicurus, is generally regarded as his best, containing as it does substantive quotations from treatises and letters, which pass language and style tests for authenticity. It has often been suggested that he was himself an Epicurean, or as close to one as the eclecticism of the philosophical schools of his time (whenever exactly it was) allowed. (Typically, he has also been classed as a Skeptic....)

Annoyingly, some of the most important, and most disputed, information for which he is the sole or chief source comes in the earlier parts of the "Lives," in the portions concerning the so-called "Pre-Socratic" philosophers. Friedrich Nietzsche (the philosopher), who published a pioneering study of Diogenes Laertius early in his short, brilliant, career as a classical philologist, suggested calling them "Pre-Platonic," since their works, along with the words of Socrates, survive only in quotations, whereas Plato was the first to leave a substantial body of surviving work. Unfortunately (as I have complained in another review), the less appropriate name is the one that has stuck -- even though some of the "Pre-Socratics" were his younger contemporaries.

Diogenes here seems to be working with previous compilations and summaries, and may have known little more about their works than the brief passages he actually quotes -- as opposed to Simplicius, a commentator on Aristotle who provided extended quotations from some of the earlier philosophers Aristotle mentioned, noting that their writings had become difficult to find. Inevitably, there is a substantial critical literature, in which Diogenes' contributions are sliced thin in order to be offered as evidence, or rejected as unreliable. The information in Diogenes is scrutinized and dissected in a standard (but increasingly recognized as obsolete) edition compiled in the nineteenth century and several times revised, Diels' "Fragmente der Vorsokratiker" (now referred to, from an editor of a revised edition, as Diels/Kranz). I have discussed several English versions in a review of Kathleen Freeman's "Ancilla to Pre-Socratic Philosophers: A Complete Translation of the Fragments in Diels, 'Fragmente der Vorsokratiker'." (See below some of the other titles.)

The immediate subject of this review is "Diogenes Laertius: The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers," a Kindle edition based on the 1853 translation by C.D. Yonge, originally published in Bohn's Classical Library, which was a sort of Victorian precursor to Everyman's Library, the Penguin Classics, and the Oxford World's Classics (and various series by other publishers). The translation is regarded as fairly literal, and complete, but not without errors. Yonge also smooths over (but does not omit) material offensive to Victorian -- and more modern -- moral sensibilities. I find it quite readable, but others may balk at the mixture of Victorian English and the underlying Greek sentence structures. As with any translation of Diogenes Laertius, it must be read with critical attention, and not taken too seriously as evidence without further examination.

[Addendum, February 2016: I see that I failed to mention that the table of contents in the Acheron Kindle edition, reviewed here, covers only the ten "books," and does not break them down by the philosophers included in each; this considerably reduces the utility of the book for anyone who is not prepared to read it straight through!]

The bilingual Loeb Classical Library edition by R.D. Hicks ("Lives of the Eminent Philosophers," 1925; two volumes) is generally regarded as superior, but, as noted in the Wikipedia article on "Lives and Opinions," his translation is bowdlerized. (Some of the volumes in the earlier decades of the Loeb Classical Library translated such passages in Greek into Latin, and those in Latin into Italian, providing the passages with "the decent obscurity of a learned language," with sometimes amusing results.) There is a on-line version of Hicks' translation from Wiki-Source, and PDFs from the Library of Congress's archive.org website, and print versions are usually available from Amazon.

[Addendum, February 2016: the Hicks translation, together with the Greek text (by itself, and in alternating Greek/English sections) is now available from Delphi as a Kindle book, with the new title of "The Complete Works of Diogenes Laertius" (also listed as "Diogenes Laertius: Complete Works"). This does have detailed tables of contents, by philosopher, to the English, Greek, and Greek/English versions, which are extremely useful.]

A third translation, slightly abridged if memory serves, is the paperback "Lives of the Philosophers" (1969), translated and edited by A. Robert Caponigri. I read it sometime in the 1970s, and no longer have a copy to refer to. My impression was mostly favorable, but, as I recall, Caponigri left out the traditional book and chapter numbers, which made finding references a challenge. The lack of commentary or bibliographic references was also a disappointment.

A (rather expensive) critical edition has recently (2013) been published, "Lives of Eminent Philosophers," edited by Tiziano Dorandi, as volume 50 in the Cambridge Classical Texts and Commentaries series. With luck, we may see a new translation (or two) based on this edition sometime in the future -- Penguin Classics and Oxford World's Classics being, I would think, likely publishers. Of course, bits and pieces appear in a Penguin Classics volume edited by Jonathan Barnes , "Early Greek Philosophy" (1987, second edition 2002), and in Robin Waterfield's "The First Philosophers: The Presocratics and The Sophists" for Oxford World's Classics (2000).

A Fascinating Material
By Zach
I first became aware of Diogenes Laertius' work after reading Comets and the Horns of Moses (The Secret History of the World), and now it's really a fascinating material on the lives of the Greek Philosophers. Truth be told, I had never heard of so many names as mentioned in this book and their backgrounds and sayings were quite an intriguing read. From each gives food for thoughts.

"The Lives and Opinions of Eminent Philosophers" is basically a biography of the Greek philosophers as written probably somewhere in the Third Century Anno Domini. Its structure is broken down to ten "books" with the first seven focused on Ionian Philosophers (including Plato, Socrates, and the Cynics/Stoics) and the remaining directed our attention to Italian Philosophers (i.e., Pythagoreans). Considering the fact that it was written nearly two thousand years ago, it's not a bad style and it's pretty straight-forward. For me, each philosopher's life gives an intellectual fuel to my curious mind...

For those who are interested in the ancient Greek history, or the philosophers in general, or history at large, this book is to be recommended.

Based on a rare 1925 catalog, this showcase of one of the most beloved eras of American architecture features floor plans, construction details, and photos of twenty-six homes. Styles range from English cottages and Spanish bungalows to Dutch colonials, New England farmhouses, and Italianate designs.
More than 250 illustrations, and 21 color plates, complement the text, which contains detailed descriptions of exteriors and interiors. Supplementary articles explain how to convert porches into living space, install plumbing, and build garages. Other home-improvement suggestions offer tips on landscaping gardens and designing interior woodwork. Daniel D. Reiff, an authority on antique house-plan books, offers an informative introduction that places these authentic views of early-twentieth-century American architecture into a wider context.

Very liveable houses
By Chrijeff
These 41 homes, most of them one-and-a-half- or two-storey, are quite the sort of thing you might still find lining the older streets of your town. And with good reason, for while none of them is big, all of them have the basic elements Americans expect of their houses: bathrooms, electricity, closets, modern kitchens with built-in cabinets and sinks, and so on. Most have two or three bedrooms (and in many cases a "maid's room," which not only tells you something about what life was like for middle-class families in the days before the Depression, but could easily be converted, in these servantless times, to a handy home office or a guest room); porches and terraces are common and good cross-ventilation ubiquitous (a selling point in a time when many people want to reduce their energy consumption whether for economic or ecological reasons). The book includes lovely color illustrations of many of the houses, and contemporary essays on such subjects as gardening, modern plumbing and wiring, and decoration (illustrated with BW photographs). Perhaps best of all, it doesn't share the lamentable nearly-universal flaw of Dover books, tiny illustrations: the plans are usually full-, and multiple-, page, and appear to be working blueprints, with light fixtures and such included. Before you go out house-hunting you could do worse than look through it and see how truly workable these almost-a-century-old homes really are. And, of course, social historians interested in the era will find it a treasure trove.

Texas Old-Time Restaurants & Cafes, by Sheryl Smith-Rodgers

There are hundreds of restaurants in our state that have been around for more than twenty years. Some boast lots of atmosphere and a few gimmicks, like the Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo. Others are more refined and elegant, like the Green Pastures Restaurant in Austin. Many double as a community watering hole, where locals gather to drink coffee and discuss what's happening around town. The Blue Bonnet in Marble Falls fits that bill.
Large or small, fancy or plain, these restaurants share three things in common: long histories, established reputations, and loyal customers.
Author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers scoured the state to find the best of these old-time restaurants and cafes, and then collected some of their tried-and-true Texas recipes, making this an excellent gift book, recipe source, and weekend travel guide.

A great read for travelers
By Lovetripper.com Romantic Travel Magazine
Sometimes writers read a book and wonder "hey, why didn't I think of that?" The idea is so good, the research looks like so much fun, and reading the finished product is just effortless. Just a few pages into Texas Old-Time Restaurants and Cafes and we were getting those familiar thoughts--what a great idea! Texas author Sheryl Smith-Rodgers has come up with a real winner here that will appeal to readers whether you're living in Texas, planning a trip to the Lone Star State, or just traveling from the comfort of your favorite armchair. Divided geographically, this guide takes a look at restaurants and cafes that been serving Texas for 20 years or longer. You'll find all types of restaurants here, from ones near major tourist areas like San Antonio's Casa Rio, located right on the beautiful River Walk, to small, out of the way places like Tomball's Goodson's Cafe and Waskom's New Waskom Cafe, which isn't new at all but dates back to 1928. Each of the restaurant entries includes a history of the cafe along with directions and nearby attractions. Many of the cafe listings also include recipes for Texas favorites ranging from chicken fried steak to pecan pie.

I love this book!! It gives such insight into the histories of restaurants & eateries in this great state of Texas. There was an article about my hometown, and the little drive-in that I grew up with - the Dairy Bar in Lake Jackson, Texas. I'm going to make it a point to try to find as many of these Restaurants & Cafes as I can find in the rest of my life.

Thanks for such a wonderful book.

An Entirely Black-and-White Disaster with a Preface Promising "All concepts are Illustrated in full-color images."
By Bairbin
This book, "Stahl's Illustrated Antipsychotics," is one in a series of "Stahl's Illustrated [psychiatric texts] " and I expected it to be printed in color on quality paper like others in the series I've ordered and received. But this one is printed in black & white on cheap paper. The cost was not less than for the companion texts printed in color, and in fact the preface to this black-and-white disaster states "All concepts are illustrated in full-color images." Well, they are not, and it is a depressing and difficult book to read, because most of the pages are given over to illustrations with legends that refer you to "the pink X" and so forth, quite hard to distinguish in black and white. Perhaps this book was part of a misprinted run, but there seems no reasonable avenue to discover that. I could return the book to the seller, Amazon, but I want the information, so I would have to try an exchange, which is too much trouble for what I think is no chance of success (I could find no provision for a customized Amazon return complaint that would indicate the nature of the defect). I am annoyed with the lack of quality control of the book's publisher, Cambridge University Press, but more so with Amazon for providing no reasonable way to submit an inquiry about a defect that is probably pervasive in the stock on hand.

You name it, she thought of it.
    By K. S. Hirschfeld
When I first happened upon this book I was immediately attracted to the title. As a person who had left the comforts of an active career 4 years earlier to see what I could build in Europe, I thought this book might be amusing and thought it might enlighten me about situations I had yet to encounter.

It turned out to be a great deal more than that and I wish I had read it before I'd made the leap. It would have saved me a lot of hand wringing on various subjects and helped me think through a number of topics in advance.

The book addresses those who want a few months' getaway in a different environment as well as those who want to pull up stakes completely for a more `long term' change of scenery. Although written to some degree from an American perspective, the issues and questions raised apply no matter what your departure point.

Knorr raises subjects ranging from how to choose your destination, the family planning that's required, health care and medical coverage, insurance, passports, visas, bureaucracy, safety, financial considerations when operating away from home, what to take and what to leave behind, how to deal with the property you own, settling in, networking in your new environment as well as how to find a home, car, doctor, you name it, she thought of it.

Knorr gives you the facts but also addresses the emotional upheaval that can accompany such a move and helps you think through the permutations that always accompany a big decision! She writes with the wisdom of somehow who has passed this way and wants to save the reader some of the headaches she encountered while navigating the waters of setting up home in a new location. Her style is engaging, straight forward and very well informed .

If this book inspires you to take the leap, all the better, but even if I doesn't, it's a great read and will acquaint you with the adventure and challenges that await those who do. It is an easy read and jam packed with good information on virtually every aspect of making this kind of decision. If she missed anything, I'm not sure what it is.

    Solid, Nuts-and-Bolts Advice for Adults
    By A Customer
Filled with practical advice covering both the philosophical ("Don't you love your country?" objections) and the practical (a recommended cat carrier), Knorr breaks a complicated, life-changing idea into specific, do-able tasks. Anyone who has thought about living overseas for months or years must read this book.
Beginning with a personality assessment for the would-be expatriate, Knorr guides the reader through a step-by-step analysis of moving overseas. As the title implies, this is a book for adults who may be encumbered with houses, aging parents, life-long living patterns and other apparent obstacles to making a major life change.
Knorr's cautious approach and practical information are designed to produce either a successful sojourn overseas or the avoidance of what might turn out to be an impulsive mistake.

A Slim Guide to the Obvious
    By T. I. Farmer
There's nothing in this slim, superficial little book you can't discover for yourself in 30 minutes' focused Internet surfing. If you have genuinely never considered even the most basic issues associated with living abroad, and you find value in pronouncements like "Don't buy a fancy car over there" or a list of 800 numbers for overseas airlines, you might get some value from this. If you've traveled overseas with some frequency, know the culture you want to join, and now need practical advice on tax and money management, visa and residency requirements, property ownership rules, etc., this book is more or less useless. The author quotes a couple of immediate-circle friends extensively about their move to Portugal but appears to have done little serious research... admittedly it's difficult to write a guide that covers every country you might move to, but be warned this book is really an example of "once over lightly."
