Great Basic primer on optical instruments

Great simple explanation of light and basic optical instruments. Good for someone that wants to know how scopes work, not someone going for a Phd in physics.

The only reason I gave 4 stars is that book is written as a US Navy course, so there is much talk of the navy and naval instruments that many people will find no use for.

Investigating the core of our lives

Edmund Burke has written one of the most wonderful introductions to this subject one could hope to find. Barely more than 150 pages he writes with brevity and clarity about the varies but related concepts of taste, the sublime, and beauty. Despite being written over 250 years ago, his thoughts remain relevant to modern studies. I personally have explored to some lengths these concepts (particularly beauty) by pursing both ancient and modern works from philosophical, religious, literary sources, as well as science and psychology. When speaking about perceptions in both their physical and mental aspects, it is very difficult to discern one from the other. But this is a necessary challenge as it falls not only into the camp describing reality (the way things simply are) but that of values. Values bridge the world to the individual, so the discussion is a balance of objective, analytic reasoning and subject, personal experience. What is important to remember is that neither side of this seemingly contradictory set can overcome the other. Any where from the more esoteric concept 'sublime' to the ever mysterious 'beauty', must always reside as an experience. Very special experiences, yes, and those that we wish to share. The terror of the unknown, the incomprehensible, such as the limitlessness of space to the glory of God, are not just subjects tucked away in the corners of our mind, but are shared through casual discussion and rigorous debate of physics, philosophy and theology. That which commands our attention--an enchanting face, a Van Gogh painting, cathedrals, a generous act--are experienced as different ways of communicating and sharing with others; what we think and how we see ideas and relationships. An investigation into the sublime and beauty in our lives is not just an engagement into that which is pleasing to humans, but what and how we value the world and every thing within it.

Excellent rare book

This is a highly valued, excellent rare book. It is even signed by a gentleman that was known by the Bronte family. I do not think that the bookseller knew this detail as it would be one that would be known only by a Bronte scholar. The book is fragile, but intact - exactly as the bookseller described. There was no damage caused to the book in the shipping process, and the book was wrapped very well within the box. Thank you to the bookseller for the care that you gave in delivering this rare and extremely influential work.

About the Author
Garo Yepremian is a retired Armenian-American football player best known for his 37-yard field goal, ending the longest game in NFL history. He lives in Avondale, Pennsylvania.

Skip Clayton hosts "Racing Wrap", a weekly one-hour radio show on WBCB Levittown, Pennsylvania. and has covered sports for the ABC Radio Network for over 40 years. Clayton is also the co-author of 50 Phabulous Phillies. He resides in Sellersville, Pennsylvania with his wife Joanne.

Garo's Random Kicks

Garo's stories are often short and somewhat random. They are not in chronological order, which can be a bit confusing. He is sometimes a bit defensive about his usefulness to the team. But with all that, I do get a sense that this is Garo unfiltered, as the other reviewer says, as if you were just chatting with him about random things. I especially enjoyed the story about the Thanksgiving game against the Cardinals in 1977. I remember that game well, as Bob Griese threw 6 touchdown passes in three quarters. A fight broke out at the end, probably instigated by Conrad Dobler, and every Dolphin player got involved in the fracas and got fined, except Griese and Garo. I enjoyed the fact that this book doesn't just focus on the Super Bowl years of the Dolphins, as most Dolphin books do, but includes the interesting stories of the late 1970s as well.

Beers with Garo

I must say, I liked this book. The way it reads, it's like sitting at a table with Garo having beers while he recounts stories from his days with the Miami Dolphins. Sometimes he rambles, but still... he provides some keen insight into the Dolphins organizing of the time. Garo also critques many of the most popular Dolphins players from their undefeated season. No controversies here though. The one part that I especially enjoyed was Garo discussing his feelings regarding his errant passing attempt in the Super Bowl against the Washington Redskins. It's a quick and entertaining read.

Lives and loves of a bisexual black man

In his first book Invisible Life, the author E. Lynn Harris introduced me to a world which before this was truly invisible and unknown to me. The chronicle of Raymond over a number of years described not only the life of a black man but one who was bisexual as well. Meeting Raymond Daly first as a young Southern college student deeply involved in a heterosexual relationship with his college sweetheart, to the days of his affair with a gay black man and then a black actress, to an acquiantance dying of AIDS, this book is especially memorable and poignant. It isn't any wonder then, that by the end of the book Ray is beset with uncertainties as to his sexuality. Pressure from his family not to even think of himself as a homosexual, hiding his bisexuality from the stodgy law firm he works for and then meeting a beautiful black actress who falls in love with him, by the books end, Ray must finally decide to consider the direction of his realtionships and his sexual life.
I found this book to be an easy read. Perhaps a bit too easy. It only took me les than a day to finish the book and at times I found the writing was like a very long coversation, instead of a novel. Despite this The characters were finely drwan and I am looking forward to reading the next two books in this series to see the final decisions Ray makes regarding his life.

A real eye-opener!!

If you have ever been curious about the life of a gay African American man, this book, and the rest of E. Lynn Harris' books, will enlighten you. Aside from the description of this book as the "Literary equivalent of cotton-candy" and the use of "homophobic" language, as one reader described, Mr. Harris' books give you a wonderful look at the lives of men who could be your brother, cousin, uncle or friend.
I grew up with a gay brother, with whom I had never discussed his sexuality (although it was never a secret). I grew up knowing his gay friends, caucasion and African American, and I have never met a more loving and caring group of people. They are just like you and me, but for their sexual orientation. I would like to thank Mr. Harris for humanizing the homosexual population, in a way that no one has before.
I discussed this book with my brother, just months before he lost his battle with AIDS. He told me how he was able to identify with some of the characters, as they resembled him and many of his friends. It was the only time that I ever discussed homosexuality with my brother.
Thank you Mr. Harris, for opening the door for that discussion. It is a discussion I will cherish for the rest of my life, as I will your books. Your books give me a chance to see what life must have been like through my brother's eyes. Please keep telling your stories!!

Couldn't put it down!

I though Eric Jerome Dickey was my favorite author of all times but, I think he has met his match. I went to the store to buy some new books and picked up this new book by E. Lynn Harris "Not a day goes by". I read it and it was one of the best books I have ever read, that was until someone from my job told me that he had four other books prior to this one. So far I have read Invisible Life and my favorite of all times ever "Just As I Am." If anyone has had someone that they love died of AIDS, this book will have you crying uncontrollably when a certain person dies in the book from AIDS. I am kind of feel bad to say this but, I did not look or treat homosexuals, lesbians and bisexual people in the way that they should be treated, in other words just like straight people. I also used the words queer, fag the list goes on and on. I know now how stupid I must have appeared to some people. After reading this book, I now know that some people that I hang around everyday could be bisexual and the things that I said probably have hurt them. So to everyone that I have disrespected, I AM TRULY SORRY, and that includes my uncle who has passed away. Even though I would never said anything bad about him but, disrespecting his sexuality through other people is just as bad. I am sorry that it took such a good book for me to learn how ignorant that I have been!

Bold, graphic, black-and-white images are visually and emotionally striking. Excellent use of maps and diagrams provides reference points and enhances understanding of spatial relationships. Unique panel placement includes several sequences of horizontal strips, read as columns. War, what is it good for?

Zeina was born during the Lebanon Civil War in 1981. The Civil War lasted from 1975-1990 and it divided the city of Beirut into East and West with the Christians living on the East side and the Muslims on the West side of the demarcation line.

In a Game for Swallows Zeina writes and draws about one particularly memorable day when she was little and living in an apartment near the demarcation line. The streets were lined with metal barrels, with walls of sandbags and cinder blocks to act as shields from sniper bullets. Zeina's parents regularly traveled the dangerous streets to visit her grandmother who lived a few blocks away.

Zeina, with her parents and little brother lived in a apartment in East Beirut. The only room they used in the apartment was the foyer because it was the safest place. They slept there, ate there and entertained other apartment dwellers there. There is a taxi driver, a newly married couple with a pregnant wife waiting for their papers to emigrate to Canada, the old nanny, and a whole host of other interesting apartment dwellers. Many of whom had suffered losses of family members and property.

A Game for Swallows is told in stark black and white artwork. Each detail is so fine as the story is told minute by minute, hour by hour. The facial expressions change in increments as Abirached captures wartime. The reader learns what it is like to live in a war zone from a child's perspective. I hope I never live in a place where war is a part of my daily life and I sincerely hope we find a cure for war so no one has to live the way Zeina Abirached has lived.

An okay book

This graphic novel was very interesting! It taught me about a point of history that I’ve honestly never heard of before and need to learn more about. It isn’t like history classes are fixating on places like Lebanon, even if those conflicts could certainly be learned from. I’m glad that there are writers out there telling these stories so that people like me can learn a little and then be intrigued enough to research it further.

I think what’s most interesting and confusing about the novel is that Zeina and her brother are presented as the main characters but they’re hardly in the book. They’re simply observers as the adults talk politics, worry about the coming bombs, and wonder why Zeina’s parents haven’t arrived home yet. While I really liked how most of the book was situated in the space of one day, giving a snapshot of life underneath this oppressive war, I think knowing more about the family dynamics would have been an improvement. It would have also been nice to see, perhaps in flashback, more about Zeina and her past as it relates to her perception of the terrible present.

The art was a little unconventional but I think that it worked for the book. It wasn’t my favorite style but I could certainly appreciate its presence in the narrative as it added a lot to the story.

I’d recommend this book to people who enjoy graphic memoir or are interested in historical accounts. It’s a quick read so even if you’re wanting to read something out of your typical genre, you could pick it up and sample it quickly.

profound in its simplicity

I rarely ever go directly from finishing a book to write a review, but I was so incredibly moved by this short book that I find myself compelled to TRY and put into words what effect it had on me. Sadly, I don't think anything I can say could do justice to it. The simplicity of the format belies the content, carefully drawn black and white illustrations (it appears at first glance to be a colorless comic book) with conversational text as well as explanation in the margins that tie it all together. It's a work of art but so much more than words can say. My first child was born the same year as the author/artist but under such completely different circumstances as to border on the absurd. How can this world be so different for some, why must anyone grow up in a place racked with nightly bombing raids, and how did this gifted young woman come up with such a creative and profound testament to her childhood? This is a brilliant work, accessible to all, easy to read but hard to absorb.

Another nice reprint from Dover

Based in the St. Paul/Minnesota area, Brown-Blodgett Company started as a home-construction service and eventually expanded into house plans, and the result is this 101-page book. First, the good news: The pictures and text in this book are nice and clear and even the wee tiny numbers showing individual room dimensions are legible.

The downside is, there are only two pages of front matter (titled, "The First Home You Build" [p. 1] and "Good Plans Will Save You Money" [p. 2]) and there is only one page of back matter ("How Much To Pay For a Home"). I always love reading these extra pages, because you can learn so much about the day-to-day business of building a home of your own in the early years of the 1900s.

The curious thing is, the title, "Small Houses of the 1930s". These are not what I'd categorize as "small homes." Of the nearly 200 homes pictured in this book, the great majority are spacious two-story English Tudors, Dutch Colonials, Colonial Revivals, Cape Cods and even an International Style home. While there are some small bungalows shown here, I'd say the great majority of spacious homes, typical of what you'd find in the upper-income executive neighborhoods of the 1920s and 1930s. On average, most of the homes in this book are 1600 - 2000 square feet. By 1930s standards, that's not a small home.

Like so many of these reprinted 1920s/30s architectural catalogs, this one is a lot of fun to just sit and browse. And the price is right.

The Downslide started in the thirties !

Great review by Rosemary - all I'll add is that architecturally, most of these houses are very different from the ones shown in these same kind of house plan catalogs from the teens and twenties. That was still the age of 'Arts and Crafts' styling, which found its most popular expression in the much-loved bungalow. While there are a few bungalows, and while many of the floorplans are essentially unchanged from those of the teens and twnenties, the majority of the houses shown in this book are poorly conceived boxes. Architecturally they are not very satisfying, and, from a builder's perspective, many are disasters if they would actually be built as drawn. A few of the things that irked me were : roofs that don't end where they should, roof pitches into the backs of chimneys, window layouts that don't make sense, porches that can't be accessed, horrible front entry designs, lack of exterior detailing, truncated eaves, mansard and gambrel roofs, roofs that shed rain / snow directly onto the front doorstep, plans that don't match elevations, tiny closets ... Yikes !

Having said all that, if you love old houses, for $ 10 you might as well buy it. There are some good houses scattered within, the pictures are great, the floor plans are easy to read, and if nothing else it will round out your collection. Also, this book shows the transition from the quaint old style to the post war ranches and suburban single levels that came to dominate the landscape for most of the second half of the century. I give Dover Publishing 5 stars for their ongoing efforts to keep this kind of stuff in print at a reasonable cost. I give the designers / architects a failing grade of 1 star, for an average of 3 stars overall.

Houses as good today as yesterday

I've often thought that much of the misery of the "real-estate bubble" could have been avoided if more would-be homeowners could have found houses like these--small, unpretentious "starter homes" of (mostly) three or four bedrooms, snug, sensibly planned, and not unattractive, if perhaps not the very latest style (Colonial seems to be the commonest--a classic type that we see even in the latest plan books of today). Compact, easy-to-heat two-storey models dominate; most of the rest are bungalows and rear-yard houses. It's true that kitchens and closets aren't over-large, but you have to keep in mind that most people in the 1930's had a lot less "stuff" than people in 2012, and in any case most of these houses probably have basement or attic storage or both, even if the attic may only be accessible by a pull-down stair and the basement by an exterior door (not shown in the plans). And, unlike so many Dover plan books, these plans aren't reproduced in such a small size as to bring on eyestrain: you may need a magnifier to make out the room dimensions in some of them, but most are clearly readable without. Each house occupies a page of its own and includes a nice sharp BW photograph of the completed model, which will look familiar to anyone who lives in, or has regular occasion to pass through, an older suburb. You could do a lot worse, if you're house-hunting, than to look for homes like these--or use a good plan software to create a slightly enlarged version if you're thinking of building from scratch.

William E. Leuchtenburg is William Rand Kenan Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the author of numerous books on twentieth-century American history, including the Bancroft Prize-winning Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal, 1932-1940.

A confusing look at the 1920's

It would be fair of me to make a confession before I begin: I was assigned to read "The Perils of Prosperity" for my American History class. I have enjoyed many books I have read for school, but this is not one of them.
In this book, Leuchtenburg brings up things he describes as important events, yet he never explains them. For example, the execution of Nurse Edith Cavell is mentioned twice, yet he never bothers to tell who executed her or why she was executed.
Leuchtenburg often refers to people by their full name only once in a whole twenty-page chapter, so that a reader is left wondering exactly who Leuchtenburg is talking about. This gets especially confusing considering that there are multiple Bryans (William Jennings and Charles) and multiple Smiths (Alfred E. and Jesse), and although it is unlikely confuse the two Smiths (Jesse Smith committed suicide before Alfred E. Smith even ran for the presidency), it makes one wonder whether there is a third person of the same last name. Leuchtenburg's infrequent use of full names also led me to know major players only by their last name; I didn't know Clemenceau's first name was Georges until I looked it up in the book's index.
Fortunately, most of these problems only occured in the first half or so of the book. By the time of the last five chapters, Leuchtenburg began to make himself clearer and his writing became more focused. It also helped, I must admit, that his subject matter in these chapters became more interesting--the Roaring Twenties, the "monkey trial", and the stock market crash of 1929.

I suppose that people who are already familiar with this era might enjoy the book. But if you are like me, a student or someone else trying to learn new information about the 1920's, this book is not your best choice. I often could not understand things in "The Perils of Prosperity" until after I read them in my textbook.

Excellent introductory study of the 1920s

Periodization in history is frequently tenuous at best. This is especially true when dealing with such loose categories as "the Twenties," a term signifying much more than a mere decade. William Leuchtenburg has taken this task to heart, though. He has written an entertaining and insightful history of the United States during this period, with a few years added on either end for context.
The title is, unfortunately, somewhat misleading. The "perils of prosperity" indicates a much grander theme than Leuchtenburg has undertaken. He makes scant effort to link the prosperity that the nation enjoyed until 1929 with many of the sub-themes he discusses in the book (e.g., the rejection of the League of Nations, the Red Scare, the "revolution in morals"). He does point out what he perceives as the pitfalls of prosperity, however. It concentrated power in the hands of a "business class with little tradition of social leadership" and invested world power in a country unwilling and unable to accept it. Most importantly, "it made money the measure of man."
Leuchtenberg makes a solid argument connecting America's entrance into World War I with her affluence. Between 1914 and 1916, American trade with the Allies nearly quadrupled from $825 million to $3.2 billion. When faced with the threat of unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans-and the potential loss of billions in trade-America had no choice but to declare war. (He does not suggest that this was the only reason, but it was a compelling one.)
Leuchtenburg also convincingly links American prosperity in the 1920s with the crash of 1929 and the depression that followed. This was a decade dominated by "get-rich-quick" schemes and rags-to-riches millionaires. This phenomenon was most evident in the stock market. Stories abounded of men who had parlayed their savings into riches, multiplying their money hundreds of times. Indeed, in 1928 alone, the New York Stock Exchange registered sales of over one billions shares, a fourfold increase over the level of 1923. That same year industrial stocks gained 86.5 points. According to Leuchtenberg, this wave of speculation was crucial for the nation's continuing prosperity. In fact, he believes that "by 1928 the stock market was carrying the economy." A year later, of course, that was all to end.
Also important in the book is the theme of transition. The 1920s were a time of fundamental change in American society. Prior to that, the nation was a predominantly rural, agricultural society that placed great emphasis on tradition, religion, and basic values. It was to quickly transform into one that was urban, industrial, secular, and thoroughly modern in its culture, outlook, and morality. This was not an easy transition either. Many Americans fought it tooth and nail, reluctant (or, perhaps, unable) to accept the new reality of life in the United States. This created conflicts-particularly between rural and urban attitudes-that were especially prevalent in such issues as immigration, prohibition, and the presidential elections.
Leuchtenberg's approach is primarily social and political. He views the period with a detached eye, seeking neither to defend nor vilify the Twenties. Due to the restrictions of space, his treatment is necessarily brief and generalized in areas. Overall, however, The Perils of Prosperity is an invaluable contribution to the literature.

Scandals and Speakeasies

I had to read this book for my American History Since 1877 course. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I thought I knew about the 1920's, and after reading this book I knew that I knew nothing at all.
This book covers ever aspect of the decade and gives it more than just a name. The book covers political, economic, and social issues of the day. It explains the state of the nation in the previous decade as well to give us better understanding of what was to come at the decades end.
The book was also easy to understand and did not try to overcompensate with formal language. Anyone could understand the messages conveyed.
Overall I enjoyed this book and would read it again just to enjoy it.
