Autism as Context Blindness, by Peter Vermeulen Ph.D.

Despite years of study and advanced technologies, we still do not fully understand how the
“typical” brain works, much less how an autistic brain works. And while we have
become increasingly familiar with the term autistic thinking, people with autism are still
misunderstood, leading to frustration, depression and missed opportunities to reach one’s
potential.
According to Peter Vermeulen, treatment of autism is still too focused on behavior and minimally focused on observation
or determining the way of thinking that leads to the behavior.
In this groundbreaking book, inspired by the ideas of Uta Frith, the internationally known psychologist and a pioneer in theory of mind as it relates to autism, Vermeulen explains in everyday terms how the autistic brain functions with a particular emphasis on the apparent lack of sensitivity to and awareness of the context in which things happen.
Full of examples, often humorous, the book goes on to examine “context” as it relates to observation, social interactions, communication and knowledge. The book concludes with a major section on how to reduce context blindness in these various areas, vital
for successful functioning. Due to the far-reaching consequences of context blindness, this book, due out in the winter of 2011-
2012, is a must for those living and working with somebody with autism.

Amazing Insight on Autism Related in Full to Context
By Joanna Keating-Velasco
Peter Vermeulen has created a a well-written, well-edited and wonderful resource focused solely to the subject of context in relation to autism. I was amazed at how thorough this resource was explaining the complexity of context in relation to individuals on the spectrum. It is chock full of visual and mini case study examples giving the reader an ongoing and increased understanding of what an individual on the spectrum experiences. The lengthy listing of references and footnotes in this book also offers a continued path of learning on each subject covered.

I have read stacks of books on autism and this is the first book that I have read which concentrates entirely on the subject of context. Vermeulen brings his vast experience and years working in the autism field to us enabling us to better understand those on the spectrum. By giving us so many hands-on examples, he puts us in the "shoes" of the person with autism helping to create an autism-friendly environment.

I would highly recommend this book for parents, educators, therapists and students going into any field of study impacted by autism. Not only will you learn a lot, you will quickly be lured in by the interesting examples in our everyday life related to context that we take for granted. He breaks it down and helps us understand the "whys" of the how individuals with autism respond when they are lost in the various contexts of life.

"The essence of autism is in the mind, not in the behavior." This quote from the book sums it up for me.

Illuminating concept, but limited understanding of what might done to help people
By Amazon Customer
Vermeulen does a nice job of explicating the idea of context blindness as a central problem for people on the Autism Spectrum. While he does his best to review the research in support of this idea and how it fits with other frequently cited challenges for people with ASD such as with central coherence, theory of mind, and executive function, it seemed to me that he might have done it in a far more compact format, such as a well referenced essay. In the end, his suggestion that people might benefit more from situational training than training limited to skills out of context (reading emotions, for instance) makes a lot of sense and it the kind of thing that you see in Crooke and Winner's efforts for workability (Social Thinking at Work: Why Should I Care?) and in the Pimsleur method for language learning. Still, I think his pessimism, claiming an inability of people on the Autism Spectrum to learn context awareness and sensitivity is roundly challenged by the gains we see in people who receive developmental-relationship based approaches (DIR/Floortime, PLAY Project, etc.) or those that are informed by those approaches (e.g. Early Start Denver Model) His lack of awareness of or attention to these evidence based and emotionally powered interventions, ones that change the paradigm of treatment, is a severe limitation for a book that otherwise does a commendable job in helping us all recognize some of the difficulties people with ASD can have. He offers a very concept but he is limited when it comes to thinking about what to do about it.
