GROSSMAN, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist who specializes in assessment and intervention for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. He provides assessment and consultation services in the public schools as well as staff development. Dr. Grossman is an author and speaks nationally. He co-created the Ziggurat Model, which has been adopted at district- and statewide levels.

A Great Model for Autism and More

This book describes the model used by Dr. Aspy and Dr. Grossman to meet the needs of their students with Autism. While their book is very good at describing the unique qualities of students with Asperger Syndrome and Autism, the most valuable part of this book is the Ziggurat Model itself.
This model lists the 5 important individual needs that any good intervention should address: Sensory/Biological, Reinforcement, Structure & Visual/Tactile Supports, Task Demands, and Skills to Teach. As a school psychologist, I find that these 5 categories should be applied to any student intervention. Regardless of the verification, the authors' model lays the framework for any positive change.
I would highly suggest that anyone who designs interventions, especially for students with Autism, read this book. Then, once the levels are explained, apply their techniques to all students and you will find that you are more effective when helping others.

This book was part of my courses for my Master's program. The Ziggurat Model goes over many aspects of ASD. It really helps with the needs that a good intervention should address.
These needs include: Sensory/Biological, Reinforcement, Structure & Visual/Tactile Supports, Task Demands, and Skills to Teach. This book really helps address these needs to set anyone up for success when guiding an intervention from an educator, psychologist to a parent.
While this book focuses mainly on kids on the Autism spectrum, it can be very helpful for other children with special needs.
I highly recommend this book and am thankful I have it to use as a reference tool.

Our team was seeking a starting place to meet the needs of our ASD students in a more comprehensive way. This book provides an excellent starting place. The assessment tools and the case studies are great. The references are better!
