Classic, Concise, and Rich from the Golden Age
By Ganapathy Subramaniam
There is always something about vintage things. When something defies its aging, defies time itself, then there ought to be something special about it.Not just because something is old, it can become special, but the fact that out of a possible collection, or competing group of things, when one survives the time and stays alive for generations, then it becomes special.

Also, it seems in the good old days, people were more systematic, strived for precision, accuracy, a hard desire to drive the truth clearly. some achieve this by being verbose, some being very concise.

Learn to Draw Comics, by George Carlson is certainly one special item. first published in 1933, its such a gem even today. It takes the concise route. I got a copy of the book recently, and since then I am loving it.

His style is simple and clear, something reminding us of Herge and his Ligne Claire(The clear Line), did he read this book?.

The book teaches us how to draw comics in under 60 pages. Here are some of the key topics covered..

Drawing the Head and Expressions, the author prescirbes a simple method to draw the head in different poses, the various elements of the face and some variations in the features of the face.

Then he presents us with 16 facial expressions, very clearly made. they are Joy-contentment, Pleasant surprise, Laughter, Grief-worry, Weeping, Anger, Determination, surprise, Fright-terror, The yawn,Stupidity, contempt, the wink, Discomfort, Hauteur, and Blank Wonder. Then he illustrates these on several faces. beautiful stuff. I think using these we should cover majority of situation in any scene.

Then the Figure is taken up. Simple figure construction, method of drawing action of the figure, various examples of everyday activities. Different character types are shown.

Then a bit of perspective, Effects, Shadows, silhouette, Composition etc.

Animals are taken up next, comic versions of barnyard, pet and wild animals are shown how to construct.

Carlson concludes by telling how to create comic strips and how one gets it published.

This must have been a treasure in the hands of budding artists during the Golden era of comic creation. It is no less a treasure today.

Though each individual topic is an ocean in itself, for example figure drawing can be a life-long learning process, the book presents all essential artifacts needed, and with practice of what is in the book, one can very simply and effectively learn how to draw comics.

A good book for "old-style" comic figures
By ProfessorF
"Learn to Draw Comics" is an unabridged Dover republication of the book "Draw Comics! Here's How--A Complete Book on Cartooning", written in 1933 by George Leonard Carlson. Just some context: as mentioned in my other reviews, I'm a professor researching current and past techniques for drawing figures. The way I'm "grading" these drawing books is based on completeness, quality of instruction, and appropriateness for today's artists.

For completeness, this book (although written in 1933) gets very good marks. It covers all the topics you need to draw cartoon figures. You learn how to draw the cartoon body straight-on, in 3/4's view, and in action poses. There are also chapters on drawing the more complex body parts, which include the head, the hands, and the feet. Finally, the author also covers how to draw special body types, specifically women and children.

And what's really nice is that the author takes the time to cover perspective drawing (two and one-point), which he uses as the foundation for drawing backgrounds for the figures. Other important topics that he covers are shading (value) and shadows. Finally, the author goes beyond figure drawing & backgrounds and discusses how to create a complete comic book page--layout, composition of panels, and lettering. It's really good material that transcends figure-drawing style.

The quality of instruction also gets high marks. The author provides a step-by-step process for drawing the figure in the proper proportion based on ovals and lines, as well as a step-by-step process for drawing faces. A beginner should be able to easily follow the directions in this book. Not so good are the chapters on drawing the hands and feet, which he does not provide a step-by-step process for. Instead he merely shows examples of hands and feet. I think a beginner would have trouble with those chapters.

How appropriate is this book for today's aspiring figure-drawing artists? As an introductory book it is appropriate for learning to draw properly proportioned figures. But like many of these old instructionals, the look of the figures is dated.

I personally like the look of the characters, but if you are like my students then you probably want the manga and anime style drawings. So although I would personally give this five stars as a historical reference, as a figure drawing instructional I can only give it 3 stars.

Thank you for reading.

Sharon Olds's dazzling new collection is a sequence of poems that reaches into the very wellspring of life. The poems take us back to the womb, and from there on to childhood, to a searing sexual awakening, to the shock of childbirth, to the wonder and humor of parenthood--and, finally, to the depths of adult love.

Always bold, musical, honest, these poems plunge us into the essence of experience. This is a highly charged, beautifully organized collection from one of the finest poets writing today.

Amazon.com Review
The theme of Sharon Olds' fifth volume of poetry, The Wellspring is family and the sexual and sensual nature of the creation and sustenance of life--most often her own. From a time in her mother's life that preceded her own birth ("half of me/was deep in her body, dyed egg") to her father's testicles ("my brothers/and sisters are there, swimming by the cinerous/millions") to her son (who "waited inside me so many years/egg in my side before I was born"), her place in the reproductive life of her family is paramount. Even when the ostensible subject of a poem is as public as a campus antiwar demonstration, as in "May 1968," the real topic is creation and procreation: "The mounted police moved, near us/while we sang ... /if my period did not come tonight/I was pregnant."

From Publishers Weekly
The subjects covered in Olds's (The Father) new collection will be familiar to readers, as will be her uncompromising insights and the beauty of her verse. The poems of Part I address the poet's childhood and her uneasy relationship with her parents, subjects about which she continues to display the bittersweet lyricism at which she excels: "...sometimes I thought she could/ sense bits of herself in my body/ like dots of undissolved sugar/ in a recipe that did not quite work out." Part II, concerned primarily with adolescence and awakening sexuality, offers perhaps the strongest grouping as Olds explores sexuality in an "endless... apprenticeship to the mortal." Least effective are the poems that follow, mainly about her children and her motherhood, where even Olds's powers of microscopic observation-of both self and other-do not always lift this material out of the mundane. The last poems celebrate love in marriage, portraying the maturing of erotic and emotional bonds over time ("love is simply our element,/ it is the summer night, we are in it.") While one might wish to see Olds taking more chances and expanding her subject matter, she does not fail to awaken us to the depth and beauty of familiar concerns.
Copyright 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
In this her fifth collection, award-winning Olds (What Silence Equals: Poems, LJ 1/94) surveys her life from conception to middle age with the laserlike attention to emotional and physical detail that is her hallmark. The book's first two sections focus on childhood and adolescence; the self-portrait Olds paints is of a voracious and egocentric child who thirsts for attention and is sensually attuned to all she experiences. Her recollections of her father's casual cruelties (he composed a humiliating tongue twister for his lisping daughter to recite at Sunday breakfast), though chilling, are dispassionately recounted. The second two sections are devoted to parenthood and conjugal love. Olds's poems about her children throb with love and pathos, and her paeans to an emotionally and physically satisfying marriage are among the book's most rewarding poems. In language that is taut, clear-sighted, and frank, Olds writes powerfully of life's most elemental experiences: birth, love, and death. Recommended for contemporary poetry collections.

Wellspring well done
By Jex Weisman
I enjoyed this book for several reasons - Olds' poetry is brilliant without being haughty or laiden with archaic vocabulary or tired style. Her straightforward honesty coupled with her conciseness makes her poetry easy to read. Such honesty and conciseness are easy to "overdo" or do wrong. Olds avoids both such mistakes. She is honest without being brutal or giving the reader a sense that they are recieving too much information and she is concise without being too brief and leaving the reading wanting more. Her style tells the reader exactly what she means to say and leaves us feeling as if we have recieved the perfect dose of poetry.

In her language, her voice, there is a naked view of thesoul
By A Customer
I first came across Sharon Olds' poetry in a volume of the
Best American Poetry edited by David Lehman. The poem,
True Love, which ends the hardcover edition of Wellspring
is a beautiful love song I first found there. That poem in
no way prepared me for the depth and range of feeling found
in Wellspring or the frank approach to the intimacy of
family and life. She leads subtly to the deepest of emotions, exposing the rawness of life and it's wildest
beauty. Riveted would be an apt description of reading
this book. There is an invitation to invasion of privacy,
which once taken leads the reader, first as witness and
finally as partner, to a celebration of living........

Honesty, Integrity, Poetry
By P. Melzer
Sharon Olds work is always well-crafted and honest. Shocking to some, perhaps. (Evidently it does disturb Catherine Ross, whose anti Sharon Olds crusade from April of this year is so transparent--each of her neg reviews written in the same voice, though supposedly penned by different reviewers.) As a man, I have always had a great respect for Olds' writing, her views into the world and her ability to somehow transform pain from the past into something greater and more life-affirming. You will love this book, unless you are profoundly prudish.

Shadows: Inside Northern Ireland's Special Branch, by Alan Barker

In the early hours of 30 April 2003, twelve armed and uniformed officers accompanied by four plain-clothes detectives burst into Alan Barker's house. They stayed for hours, turning over rooms, seizing documents, impounding computers, files and anything else that interested them. The family were treated as terrorist suspects, the operation resembling so many others in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. But Alan Barker was and is no terrorist. In fact, he has spent his adult life fighting terrorism on the streets of his native province.

Barker belonged to the Special Branch, the RUC's elite unit dedicated to fighting the IRA, the INLA and loyalist terrorists. He gives a gripping insider's account of life on the frontline and demonstrates how the RUC used sophisticated listening devices and informants, including the notorious supergrass Raymond Gilmour, in their fight to gain the upper hand.

After nearly 30 years of loyal service, Barker retired angry and disillusioned about what he views as the government's capitulation to the terrorists. This is the book that Downing Street and the Northern Ireland Office don't want you to read. It is a story of courage under fire, guile, Le Carré-esque plots and treachery.

A Look Inside of the RUC's Special Branch
By Jack Stone
This is a well-written, gripping account of a Special Branch officer's career inside the elite agent handling unit of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) in Northern Ireland. Most of the book describes the author's time spent working undercover in the city of Derry, providing key insights as to how the police surveilled and prosecuted suspected IRA men and women. The author does an excellent job conveying how stressful such work was and how he himself suffered from anxiety, depression, alcoholism, and suicidal tendencies after being placed in the pressure cooker that was wartime Northern Ireland for so long.

I would have given this work 5 stars if the author was able to produce a balanced, unbiased view of his work. I know this is asking much for someone who participated directly in such difficult circumstances. The author has strong views - which he makes abundantly known throughout the work - of how the British government essentially sold out Northern Ireland by signing the Good Friday Agreement and negotiating with Sinn Fein. While I respect the author's view on the issue, and he was apparently a good case officer, he knows little of counterinsurgency or even why the war raged around him for thirty years. This is where I take issue with the author and where his inherent bias - which he cannot help - comes out.

For example, the author falls short when he describes every IRA member/supporter as a terrorist. More accurately, the IRA/Sinn Fein were part of an insurgency who used terrorism to advance their movement. While the IRA did use terrorism - which was always to their detriment - their goal was to unite Ireland. Because the author cannot recognize this, he cannot understand why the IRA had the public support they did and why the Good Friday Agreement was eventually signed. While the author villifies the IRA, he spends a mere two paragraphs on the several years he supposedly spent investigating loyalist terrorists who - as has been well documented - committed the first sectarian murders against Catholics, killed the first RUC officer in the conflict, were the first to riot against Catholic neighborhoods as part of campaign of intimidation and ethnic cleansing, and set off some of the first car bombs in Ireland in order to frame the IRA. Killing of any innocent people should be roundly condemend by all - but paint everyone with the same brush.

While this is a good book and will help the reader understand the intelligence war in Northern Ireland during the 1970's and 1980's, understand where the author is coming from.

Inside Account of the Supergrass from His Handler
By Thomas Mitchell
This is the first-person account of the RUC Special Branch agent handler who managed Raymond Gilmour the "supergrass" petty criminal who infiltrated first the INLA in Derry and then the IRA in order to help foil their terrorist operations. The story of Gilmour takes up about half the book. The other half is the story of Barker's childhood, his time as a new recruit in the RUC from when he joined at age 19 until he joined Special Branch three years later, and finally his career after Gilmour. This should be read in conjunction with Gilmour's memoir to provide a good account of the undercover war that broke the IRA and led to the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

A glimpse into the undercover war
By Sugafoot
Alan Barker, is the pseudonym of a police officer who spent 26 years with Special Branch, the local detective Bureau, in northern Ireland that was tasked with recruiting agents inside the IRA. He spends much of his book describing how he recruited, trained and then ran the famous "supergrass," Raymond Gilmour who made cases against 100 INLA & PIRA members from Derry, although the charges were later dismissed. Additionally his story is about the emotional strain his work placed on him and his family which ultimately manifested itself in the form of an anxiety disorder, PTSD, and alcoholism.

Richard Rorty: The Making of an American Philosopher, by Neil Gross

On his death in 2007, Richard Rorty was heralded by the New York Times as “one of the world’s most influential contemporary thinkers.” Controversial on the left and the right for his critiques of objectivity and political radicalism, Rorty experienced a renown denied to all but a handful of living philosophers. In this masterly biography, Neil Gross explores the path of Rorty’s thought over the decades in order to trace the intellectual and professional journey that led him to that prominence.

The child of a pair of leftist writers who worried that their precocious son “wasn’t rebellious enough,” Rorty enrolled at the University of Chicago at the age of fifteen. There he came under the tutelage of polymath Richard McKeon, whose catholic approach to philosophical systems would profoundly influence Rorty’s own thought. Doctoral work at Yale led to Rorty’s landing a job at Princeton, where his colleagues were primarily analytic philosophers. With a series of publications in the 1960s, Rorty quickly established himself as a strong thinker in that tradition—but by the late 1970s Rorty had eschewed the idea of objective truth altogether, urging philosophers to take a “relaxed attitude” toward the question of logical rigor. Drawing on the pragmatism of John Dewey, he argued that philosophers should instead open themselves up to multiple methods of thought and sources of knowledge—an approach that would culminate in the publication of Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature, one of the most seminal and controversial philosophical works of our time.

In clear and compelling fashion, Gross sets that surprising shift in Rorty’s thought in the context of his life and social experiences, revealing the many disparate influences that contribute to the making of knowledge. As much a book about the growth of ideas as it is a biography of a philosopher, Richard Rorty will provide readers with a fresh understanding of both the man and the course of twentieth-century thought.

From Publishers Weekly
The contemporary philosopher Richard Rorty (1931–2007) was the epitome of a successful academic—educated and then employed at prestigious institutions, he saw his influence extend into sociology, cultural studies and literary criticism. Harvard assistant professor Gross concentrates on Rorty's professional successes in academia and sends a discouraging message to both the graduate student and the academy. Using Rorty's career as a case study, Gross observes the social hierarchy among disciplines and notes that academics are largely motivated by desires for intellectual prestige, that radical intellectual innovation is most likely to come, not from young scholars, but from those who are sufficiently established as to be able to take bold professional risks, and that aspiring intellectuals compete with one another for the limited attention of mentors. Citing the case of Rorty's first wife, Amélie—who was also trained as a philosopher, but was repeatedly forced to sacrifice her career for Rorty's—Gross illuminates the unequal opportunities for the ambitious wives of male intellectuals. The book's subtle yet scathing critique of the tenure and promotion systems within universities reveals how such systems actually inhibit innovation in young scholars. A specialized sociological study of the academy, this book will appeal to all those concerned with the state of research in higher education. (June)

Review
“More than an exhaustively researched and skillfully crafted biography of one of the most influential intellectuals of our time, Neil Gross’s Richard Rorty is also an exemplary exercise in the ‘new sociology of ideas.’ By situating Rorty in the multiple contexts, personal, institutional, and discursive, in which his thought  developed, and tracing the intellectual self-concept he forged in  response, Gross provides a compelling model for twenty-first-century intellectual history.”

(Martin Jay, University of California, Berkeley)

“Sociology does not usually engage intellectual biography. In his Richard Rorty, Neil Gross gracefully does so, and he does much more as well. He shows how a ‘self concept’ must be central to any sociological account of significant intellectual achievement. In doing so, he challenges more deterministic conceptions and restores integrity to the creative process.” (Jeffrey Alexander, Yale University)

“This is a book for many sorts of readers. It offers a full-scale biography of one of the greatest American philosophers and public intellectuals of the twentieth century; an important contribution to the history of pragmatism; and a pathbreaking new approach in the sociology of ideas. The book demonstrates how much American sociology, philosophy, and history can profit when they are brought more closely together again.” (Hans Joas, University of Chicago)

"Rorty granted Gross access to his papers and correspondence, and Gross uses this material very effectively. . . . This inside view of one of the most well-connected academics in the world can't help but fascinate us." (Barry Allen Notre Dame Philosophical Review)

"Essential for academic sociology, philosophy, intellectual history, and biography collections in academic libraries, as well as for public libraries collecting comprehensively in those subjects." (Library Journal)

"Combining biographical description and sociological analysis, Gross has produced a trenchant study that aims to identify the structural forces that helped shape one of America's most controversial and widely discussed philosophers." (Choice)

"I highly recommend Neil Gross's biography to all persons who are interested in Rorty, contemporary philosophy, and the socioogy of ideas. This is a first rate work." (Brad Frazier Metapsychology)

"Gross's careful archival research, innovative theoretical synthesis and substantive contributions are likely to help inspire a range of new studies on the sociology of philosophy and the humanities. The book is well worth a careful read. . . . The story of academic social mobility that Gross tells is compelling, the book is a terrific read that is likely to become a classic, and the theory of  'intellectual self-concept' is well worth building on and developing." Rorts and all
By Alvaro Lewis
This making of an American philosopher only covers the making, that is from Rorty's grandparents, parents, schooling, and career until about 1982. Rorty continued to live and write for another 25 years but that period falls beyond the view of this investigation.

It is interesting that an author would unroll an arsenal of sociological methods to address the circumstances of a single individual. Most of the new sociology of ideas assists the author's effort to show the changes in American academia and the stratification of disciplines occurring after WWII, and such explication is very well done. When it is clear that a theory will not account for a life-decision made by Rorty, Gross employs his "self-concept" idea; which suggests, roughly, that individuals behave in accord with their conception of self. The novelty of this innovation is hardly shattering and such a wishy-washy guide as to seem capricious beside some of the hard-earned, empirical theories of sociology and educational change.

The author sets out to reveal how it is possible that someone like Rorty could grow into a brilliant and controversial academic superstar. The sociological methods do very well to establish frames of intellectual activity and contexts for Rorty's opportunities, but they in no way persuade that Rorty's explosive success was anything other than unique. One case-study of a single individual does not make a science or a sociology secure (or convincing).

On the whole, this book offers a very solid review of Richard Rorty's early career, its development and some suggestions as to what made him tick, but revolutionary sociology this is not.

Rorty Would Approve
By Blanchard Demerchant
Sociologist Neil Gross has written a fascinating biography of Richard Rorty that attempts to show the sociological influences that formed Rorty into the politically radical, anti-analytical pragmatist we came to know and admire.

Although the book's title is misleading, since it gives no indication that quite a few pages will be devoted to discussing sociological theory, the strictly biographical portions--the majority of the book--are excellent and are unburdened with sociological speculation. Gross's discussion of Rorty's philosophical theorizing is quite good.

Rorty would have approved of Gross's work. Gross proposes a theory--a story or narrative--of how Rorty came to believe and argue what he did. Gross does this by looking at Rorty's rearing and the sociological pressures and influences of the schools Rorty attended and taught at. This is the kind of hypothetical "explanation" Rorty said we must endlessly debate regarding all so-called truths we affirm in a world in which we cannot encounter the "given" without wrapping it in the assumptions and theories of our time and place. Gross's sociological explanation of how Rorty came to be Rorty acknowledges, as Rorty claimed, that there are no sharp divisions between philosophy, sociology, or any of the other disciplines of academic study.

A separate chapter is devoted to each of Rorty's parents; then several chapters on Rorty's training at the University of Chicago and Yale; a chapter on his appointment to Wellesley College; then two chapters on his teaching at Princeton and his move to the University of Virginia.

The New sociology meets Richard Rorty
By Peter.
Neil Gross, speaking for the "new sociology of ideas", has written this compelling and challenging book in order to explore social factors that explain an intellectual's life-time professional career choices. Using Richard Rorty as an empiric choice to illuminate sociology theory, the author first traces Rorty's transition from metaphysician to analytic philospher and finally to a "leftist American patriot" (as a devotee of the pragmatists - James, Dewey, and Pierce); secondly, the author interprets and understands Rorty's decisions by dissecting out his "intellectual self-concept" - the author's own methodologic tool. Was the author successful in showing how sociology could explain Rorty's decision-making process? Yes. By giving us, the reader, insight into the great philosopher's self-concept..... This book should find a permanent place in the area of Humanities; it is especially recommended for those involved in the new sociology of ideas and of course to all attuned to Richard Rorty.

Reinventing Public Education: How Contracting Can Transform America's Schools (Rand Research Study), by Paul Hill, Lawrence C. Pierce, Jam

A heated debate is raging over our nation’s public schools and how they should be reformed, with proposals ranging from imposing national standards to replacing public education altogether with a voucher system for private schools. Combining decades of experience in education, the authors propose an innovative approach to solving the problems of our school system and find a middle ground between these extremes.

Reinventing Public Education shows how contracting would radically change the way we operate our schools, while keeping them public and accessible to all, and making them better able to meet standards of achievement and equity. Using public funds, local school boards would select private providers to operate individual schools under formal contracts specifying the type and quality of instruction.

In a hands-on, concrete fashion, the authors provide a thorough explanation of the pros and cons of school contracting and how it would work in practice. They show how contracting would free local school boards from operating schools so they can focus on improving educational policy; how it would allow parents to choose the best school for their children; and, finally, how it would ensure that schools are held accountable and academic standards are met.

While retaining a strong public role in education, contracting enables schools to be more imaginative, adaptable, and suited to the needs of children and families. In presenting an alternative vision for America’s schools, Reinventing Public Education is too important to be ignored.

Review
"This book is a seminal work that offers a new alternative for resolving many of the intractable problems facing public schools today. Its central premise both expands and preserves public education as we know it. Its authors acknowledge that the book will be controversial and challenging.

Reinventing Public Education proposes an entire governance system of individual school contracts. In a rational and constructive manner, the authors illustrate how contracting could fundamentally alter the dynamics of public education. Excessive over-regulation that stymies innovation and incentive would be removed, yet the envisioned contract schools would remain publicly accountable and accessible to all. The book is a highly detailed field manual on system change that is written by authors with decades of experience in education. It will be of interest to school boards, district and school administrators, policy makers and all who seeks to reinvigorate public schooling." -- Reviewed by Helen Raham, Association of School Business Officials International - School Business Affairs, December 1998, Vol. 64, Num. 12.

The Future of American Education lies within this book.
By A Customer
After reading Reinventing Public Education, I believe that the only really hope for the future of American education lies in the contracting approach to public education that the authors describe. This is one of the only books on education I have ever read that understands that the problems with public education in this country have less to do with a lack of standards, poor teaching methods, or inequitable funding, than a system which fails to understand that schools are organizations that can only be successful through organic growth rather than government regulation. This book will appeal to both voucher supporters and ardent defenders of a public education system that is committed to educating all its students

3 D is here for the average computer artist!
By Clark Isaacs
This is an excellent item for the computer artist who wants to delve into 3 D and do it on the 2 D computer screen with out special equipment. Our college computer lab was very enthusiastic to receive this book and begin working with it as we have the latest technology there. Many of the items are for those who are experienced, but when you put the DVD into your computer and see the samples, it all comes to life. I would highly recommend this as a start to the next step in improving computer usage.

An introductory tutorial by illustrated examples + DVD for novices
By Reluctant Reader
The ISBN 0240815335 (3D Motion Graphics for 2D Artists) is the simplest possible introductory step-by-step tutorial by illustrated examples starting from the basics for anyone also not familiar with 3D. The illustrated examples are often full or partial screen snapshots of the software programs being explained. The title shares many similarities with the introductory part of the industry standard "Inside AutoCAD", and it is equally useful. It is perfect for novices and those not mathematically gifted. The explanations are simplest possible and crystal clear. There is not much to read, but to look at the illustrations in color. Almost all tutorial pages contain several illustrations. The DVD contains examples to practice on while following book instruction. It also contains video instruction teaching techniques from the book. The book - as all published by Focal Press - is very well done graphically and soft-bound. Every illustration is perfect. The quality of printing on semi-glossy paper is superb. The cover is coated, stain resistant, and strong.

This book gave me a few skills I didn't already have.
By kstars
This book should be marketed as a book for aspiring television and film animators, who already know some 2D, and specifically who have access to certain software (However, he does mention a free program and that you can get 30-day trials to complete the tutorials in the book). It sort of burst my bubble just a bit when the author claimed that Adobe After Effects is the premier choice software for 3D animation. I have Adobe CS5.5 Creative Design Suite for digital design classes. Flash (which used to be Macromedia software) is the animation program in MY suite; not After Effects. But, I paid attention just the same. I've worked with Illustrator and Photoshop, and after figuring out a few things the author omitted (like which folder on the companion CD was the location of each file that we worked with.), I finally managed to do the exercises for PS and Ill. They were cool, and I learned some new tricks. I also realized that, by doing a search, the PS program icon for CS5.5 on Mac Lion must be right-clicked, and you have to click the check box to open the software in 32-bit mode to get access to a whole lot of features; and for this book it was the filter, "Lighting Effects". So, of course, my finding out that CS5.5 on Lion is a problem to begin with (regardless of the green light from Apple and Adobe to install it) is not the author's fault. At least this book led the way for me to find out now instead of later.

The author starts out with basics of 2D, 2.5D, and 3D, as well as tips on getting into the business he is in. He has researched some 3D and animation software, pros and cons, prices, for the benefit of the reader, which is always a plus.

I have worked with 3D, 2D, and animation, so I thought by the title that this book was for me.

For the purposes of not taking way too much time to do this review, I chose to review it based on the two tutorials I did do, I opted not to get into any 30-day trials, and based on how I read the book in it's entirety.

Perhaps I should have read more about the book prior to ordering it. Maybe the title should read, "3D Motion Graphics with X and X software packages: For 2D Artists Conquering the third dimension". That would be fair.

I love the style of Art the author shares with the reader. I am really into tutorial books. I enjoyed the tutorials I did. The book covers many tools of his trade. It also covers his philosophy of his trade. I am glad I got the book. Well-written, sturdy, many screen shots, much wisdom. Just a tad vague and presumptuous.

Gymnopédies, Gnossiennes and Other Works for Piano (Dover Music for Piano), by Erik Satie

In his piano works especially, Erik Satie (1866–1925) was a witty musical caricaturist. The eccentric French composer loved to satirize academic rules in general and the impressionistic titles of Debussy's compositions in particular, giving his own works such surrealistic names as Pieces in Pear Form and Dried Embryos, and annotating them with equally bizarre musical directions: "Tres 'neuf heures du matin" (Very "nine in the morning"), "Corpulentus" (Corpulent), and so on. His comic spirit is equally embodied in the music itself, as this delightful selection of seventeen piano works amply proves. They are as spare, lively, and capricious as they are hauntingly melodic. In addition to the well-known Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, the pieces reproduced here include Sarabandes, Pièces froides, Poudre d'or, En habit de cheval, Morceaux en forme de poire, Embryons desséchés, Aperçus désagreables, Descriptions automatiques, and more.
This volume, the largest collection of Satie's piano works yet published, has been reprinted on fine-quality paper from authoritative original editions, and sturdily bound to provide you a lifetime of study and enjoyment. In its pages are some of the most original and appealing achievements of a turbulent era in music, compositions that influenced such modern masters as Ravel, Milhaud, and Poulenc.

Gymnopedies, Gnossiennes and Other Works for Piano
By David J. Gilhooly III
This is a very nice and large collection of Satie's works for piano. All of the pieces are reproduced from the original publications and Satie's comments in the original French are included and translated on the bottom of the pages. All three versions of Gymnopedies are there, but only the first 3 Gnossiennes. Many of Satie's compositions aren't divided into measures and it is very interesting to see how he actually wrote the music with his comments. Pieces like the Gnossiennes should be listened to before you actually play them. A good interpretation of all 6 is the CD Satie, 3 Gymnopedies and other piano works by Pascal Roge. Mr. Roge interprets the music beautifully. Then you can play them. Some of the other works included in this book are Sarabandes, Pieces froides (very interesting music), Embryons desseches, Morceaux en frome de Poire and there are 3 pieces written for 4 hands.

Content high, binding low
By toy junkie
Satie's work has always fascinated me. Playfulness, melancholy, and simplicity - and always easy to recognize. The scoring is, to my not expert ear, very well done and easy to read. I would rate this 5 stars were it not for the deplorable predilection of print music publishers to bind books such that they do not open and lay flat on the piano without breaking the binding. Music is to be played first and last and not, at least not for old fogies like me, just read.

Falls a bit short for me
By K. Busch
Admittedly, I didn't know much of Satie's music. I ordered this after a friend of mine performed a Gnossienne at a home concert. I have certainly enjoyed playing this music myself but a few things about this volume. The first is that you need a photocopier or you need to be able to memorize quickly: there are numerous two page works where the pagination is exactly wrong, where you must turn the page awkwardly in the middle of every piece -- and these page turns do not occur during pauses. By contrast, I just ordered the Barenreiter edition of the Bach French Suites, and the page turns are all placed with great consideration. It can be done!

The other is that this collection is chock full of works for piano four hands. (I didn't know he wrote so many!) You might feel teased if you lack a co-conspirator.

Finally, there is the Nachlaß not included, e.g., the Gnossienes 4 - 6. Any collection of Schubert or Chopin includes a fair amount of posthumous material. Not so Satie?

Adequatecy (Yes, I know)
By Clark Griswald
Generic information.

He thinks CCTV stands for "close-captioned television" (which is not even the correct phrase for what he incorrectly thinks it to be). Do the companies have an "IBM computer room"? You mean a server room?

Well, he does have technology shortcomings, but the book is adequate.

From Publishers Weekly
The founder and executive chef of San Francisco's boutique salad joint Mixt Greens, Swallow gives top billing to the humble salad in a collection that is by turns lush, lavish and imaginative, including signature dishes like the Park Ave (grilled chicken, herb-roasted fingerling potatoes, grilled asparagus and Parmesan), its meaty mate the Bachelor (with Yukon Gold potatoes, filet mignon and Roquefort), the Tokyo (Kobe beef carpaccio with fried leeks) and the Grove (Honeycrisp apples, fennel, spiced walnuts and blue cheese). Organized by season, and prefaced with a guide to maximizing on-hand produce, this volume gives salad makers an imaginative push, though they may hit a wall trying to source key ingredients like aged sherry vinegar, sweetbreads, quail eggs, and hedgehog mushrooms. The salad-averse will appreciate the Porky-mixed greens, roasted butternut squash, pork tenderloin and port reduction-and Swallow's bunless Kobe beef cheeseburger, served atop butter lettuce. Though some may be disappointed in the selection of dressings, nearly all of which are vinaigrette variations, this is a vital, inspired and varied collection that even steak-and-potatoes fans can appreciate.

About the Author
After working at Gramercy Tavern, ANDREW SWALLOW graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York. He continued to develop his craft at fine restaurants including Ajax Tavern in Aspen and Huntley Tavern, and as a manager of Gary Danko. During his tenure there, Andrew decided to create a new eco-gourmet fast-casual option: Mixt Greens. Partnering with his sister and brother-in-law, Leslie and David Silverglide, the team launched the San Francisco Bay Area’s greenest restaurant in 2005. Mixt has since expanded to multiple locations across the country while still preserving its gutsy approach to salads, maintaining ecologically sound business practices, and retaining its original mandate of environmental sustainability. Swallow’s home base is in San Francisco.

Beautiful book, but recipes filled with hard to find ingredients...
By twilight58
As most of the other reviews have mentioned, the book is gorgeous--beautiful photos and clear easy-to-read text. But I totally disagree with the quick, easy, readily available ingredients claims made by other reviewers. I live in the far north suburbs of Chicago and shop at local farmer's markets (only available during the summer and early fall), but I do not have access to many of these ingredients. Also techniques are not explained, i.e. chiffonade of basil, which means to cut into thin strips. If I lived in California (where the author's restaurant is located) I might have access to opal basil, squash blossoms, pea sprouts, Blue Lake beans, hedgehog mushrooms, summer truffle, sharlyn melon, Gypsy peppers, sea beans, and yuzu juice (and those are just some of the uncommon ingredients from the first 86 of the 146 pages). The next time I plan a trip to California I would love to eat at his restaurant, but I won't be making any of these recipes myself. I definitely recommend checking the book out of your local library before making the decision to purchase.

Interesting, but not necessary to buy the book
By Jessica Mayer
The recipes in this book are very inspiring.. There are good photographs, but not for all of the recipes, I wish there were more photos. I haven't made one recipe from this book and I've owned it for over 1 year.. It needs special ingredients and seems to be a lot of work for making just a salad.

Be green, buy eating greens!
By Derek Dukes
So we're all trying to eat healthier right? I've been doing my part, trying to eat more veggies, more salads etc., but it's so easy to fall in to a slump, get stuck in a rut of 'Chicken Caesar' or 'The Iceberg Wedge'. This book breaks you out of the ruts, throws in the concept of fresh, seasonal ingredients and will keep you going with a ton of fresh ideas you can either take right out of the book or use as a jumping off point for your own creation. What's more important, to me at least, is that the book has _AMAZING_ photos of the food. The really great thing is that as you nosh away, you'll forget you're actually eating something that's good for you.
