About the Author
Ebbing Lautenbach is associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases, associate professor of epidemiology in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, and senior scholar in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Keith F. Woeltje is associate professor of medicine in infectious diseases at the Washington University School of Medicine and the medical director of infection prevention for BJC HealthCare in St. Louis. Preeti N. Malani is associate professor of medicine in the divisions of infectious diseases and geriatric medicine at the University of Michigan and a research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System’s Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center.

An essential for anyone in the field

The prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has become an increasing priority for healthcare facilities, patients, consumer advocates, regulatory agencies, and legislators. Such emphasis has made the field of healthcare epidemiology an increasingly important and attractive area of specialization for new physicians, nurses, and quality specialists. However, while an increasing amount of high-quality healthcare epidemiology research has been conducted, today's healthcare epidemiologist will find herself confronted with many practical issues and challenges for which there are scant data and conflicting opinions. This is why the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America's (SHEA) 3rd Edition of Practical Healthcare Epidemiology is an invaluable tool for healthcare epidemiologists as well as infection control specialists, quality consultants, and healthcare leaders.
The major strength of this book is reflected in the first word of its title - Practicality. SHEA and the book's editors have selected premiere leaders in the field to provide practical and pragmatic perspectives and guidance on a myriad of core issues faced by those in the field on a daily basis. This book is not intended to serve as a primary reference text, but as a complementary "how-to" guide. It is an essential reference for those with any interest in the field, particularly those who work as healthcare epidemiologists, infection preventionists, consultants focused on HAI prevention, and healthcare facility leaders.
The text has been substantially updated since the 2nd edition from just six years prior with new chapters on quality improvement, urinary tract infections, Clostridium difficile, and regulatory and governmental mandates focused on HAI prevention. The chapters are written as if the expert authors were directly advising new trainees in the field, serving to provide important guidance and perspectives that are absent from routine reference books. Highlights include the following:
* Guidance on the assessment and prioritization of an HAI surveillance program
* Ethical issues in healthcare epidemiology and infection control
* How to perform outbreak and contagious pathogen exposure work-ups
* Outline of various methods for surgical site infection surveillance (including pros and cons of each)
* Pragmatic advice on the administration of an infection control program, including important advice on how to have a sustainable career as a healthcare epidemiologist (personal favorite = list of "How to Keep Your Job" tips that are very insightful and highly accurate)

The book has very few omissions. More details on practical implementation of prevention strategies for catheter-associated bloodstream infections, more discussion on the controversy surrounding active surveillance testing for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and perspectives on discontinuation of isolation precautions are just the few issues that warrant further discussion. However, these are but minor deficiencies in an excellent "how-to" guide that should be in the core library of anyone interested in or involved with HAI prevention.
