About the Author
Gene Provenzo is one of the nation s leading scholars in the foundations of education. He holds the rank of full professor at the University of Miami. He has won numerous awards throughout his career in both teaching and research and sits on many editorial boards. He has authored over ten books and has contributed chapters to many more. He has authored scores of articles in a wide range of areas in education. His recent projects include Teaching, Learning, and Schooling (Allyn & Bacon, 2002), a critically-oriented introduction to the foundations of education textbook, and the forthcoming Readings in Educational Thought (SAGE, 2005).

Provenzo is a widely published author of books on family and community history. She has developed local history curricula for the Historical Association of South Florida.

Old-fashioned but mostly okay

We got this book as part of Amazon's 4-for-3 promotion, which made its already low price more appealing. The experiments are generally the same ones you find in nearly every other book of this type, and the old-fashioned black-and-white illustrations lack the clarity and impact of many newer volumes. It looks pretty dull at first glance.

However, the experiments are carefully and accurately grouped according to the scientific principle each one demonstrates, and the text explains why or how the experiment works the way it does. The writing isn't that bad, considering how visually dull the book is. So, if this were the only book you had on this topic, you could indeed get some value from it.

Like most such books full of experiments, you would not want to turn a young child loose with the book and the instructions, regardless of their reading level! As for the amount of scientific understanding needed, I'd say that kids as early as second or third grade could enjoy at least some of the activities in here, because many of them are entertaining regardless of the science involved.

However, if you're shopping in this category I'd strongly advise moving up to something newer, with better illustrations and better layout, since there are many to choose from that don't cost a whole lot more than this one. If you already have such a book, I don't think this one has much to add.

Simply outstanding. Will get you to say "Ahh..." on almost every page.

This is one of my favorite books on science experiments. Easy to do with minimal requirements, but the concepts seem magical. I have been doing some with my daughter, and it's a delight to see the expression on her face when we do the experiments and the results seem counter-intuitive. For example, we did the funnel rolling upwards, and it totally surprised her.

(One caution: you may need to substitute other items. In the Funnel experiments, we started off buying the two funnels from Home Depot for 97c. But, the funnels didn't work. So, instead my daughter struck upon the idea of sticking together two stryofoam cups. And, the experiment worked wondrously.)

We rounded out our study of Archimedes with each child being assigned a science experiment. The kids ended up doing more than one each. This book made it easy -- the experiments are illustrated and each has about a page of instructions. Frankly, a lot of these are geared to seem more lie magic tricks than science eperiments. I have a house full of boys -- magic is great!

one of the best ,and amusing reportage of the first official meeting of a western power[england] with a self centered empire.completely blinded by ignorance ,hubris ,and etiquette. SAD but interesting and at times amusing. Well written ,well researched ,well worth to be read,The author,a french diplomat,makes some intelligent and sad reflexions and observations on the loss of historical occasions,and the blindness and arrogance of bureaucratic, and authoritarian systems of government.

Valuable collection of Irish tunes for enthusiasts

One of the most important collections of traditional Irish tunes was George Petrie's Ancient Music of Ireland, put together in mid-19th century. Petrie's work went through various editions and abridgements, including one giving 201 tunes from Petrie's original book in score arrangements for piano, without lyrics, published in 1877 by F.Hoffman, of which this Dover edition is a reprint. The printing quality is good. It should be noted that this book is probably not of major interest to the folk song fan or performer interested in these songs as songs; it seems to be aimed at the Victorian home "parlor piano" market. Nevertheless, it does include the tunes for a great number of authentic Irish airs, many of them unavailable elsewhere, and if you are seriously interested in traditional Irish music and can play keyboard, you will find this book worth having.

Good overview

Good for using as a foundation for some improvisation. Nearly all of the songs are very short, MAYBE half a page. If you take it and play each one a couple times, varying accompaniment and cadences they become a lot more interesting. But well laid out, easy to read,

It's an intermediate-high intermediate level book. My students
all enjoy playing these songs, and it fulfills their 'can play ethnic
music' requirement on their checklists.

This wonderful book brings together in one superbly produced playing edition all thirty-eight of Scott Joplin's piano rags, including his six collaborations, plus Joplin's own primer on how to play ragtime, the "School of Ragtime." Each rag has been reprinted, along with its sheet-music cover, from the original publisher's edition.
At the Williams' Brothers saloon in Sedalia, Missouri, Scott Joplin was known as "The Entertainer," and in 1897, in the upstairs room called the Maple Leaf Club, he wrote the rag that would one day be the first to sell over a million copies in sheet-music form. In time the "Maple Leaf Rag" also became the most recorded composition on piano roll, with forty known versions.
Most of Joplin's other rags were hits as well. Many bear the playful names that were given most rags, names like "The Strenuous Life," "Heliotrope Bouquet," and his last published piece, the "Silver Swan Rag." One of them, "The Entertainer," triggered a major revival of interest in his work when it was incorporated into the score of the popular film The Sting. All of them are here, each bearing the mark of Joplin's supreme originality. As ragtime authority David A. Jasen observes in his Introduction: "For pianists everywhere, this folio contains ragtime masterpieces which, when learned, will provide unlimited joy."

What's not in it

While it's true that all the piano pieces composed by Scott Joplin alone and which he called rags are contained in this collection, some piano pieces he collaborated on or didn't call rags are not. Following is a list of pieces that are in SCOTT JOPLIN -- Collected Piano Works (published by the New York Public Library) but missing from this volume:

Fun to play

Complete Piano Rags is a great book to play from. Any pianist of modest ability should get great enjoyment from these pieces once they figure out the syncopation. Ragtime is a great crowd-pleaser, too. Complete Piano Rags also shows the covers from the original sheet music for the rags, which are amusing in some cases. Like every other Dover edition, this book is a good value at a low price, and won't fall apart through use. The only thing this book doesn't have that I wish it did is Joplin's "Solace: a Mexican Serenade," which isn't a rag, but is still very beautiful (can be heard on one of J. Rifkin's records). If you do buy this book, I recommend playing "The Magnetic Rag," and "The Fig Leaf Rag." "Elite Syncopations" has a cool ending section, too.

This is a wonderful collection of Scott Joplin's rags. It includes all the sheet music covers in black and white, and the music itself is a copy from the original publishers' edition for all 38 of Joplin's rags, plus the School of Ragtime. Any ragtime fan should have this book! These two titles complement each other nicely. Together they tell the complete story of the island fortress in Manila Bay which became the symbol of American defeat and resurgence in the Philippines. Of the two, General Wright's story is far more gripping and personal. Wright was on the notorious Bataan Death March in 1942 and then in POW camps in the Philippines and Japan. An analytical and sensitive West Pointer, Wright gives a memorable look at POW life and attitudes towards food, the war, and each other. Several of the personalities he describes are unforgettable. Other survivors have published their stories, but this is one of the most detailed and best written. By contrast, General Flanagan's book is a straightforward popular history of the U.S. airborne and amphibious assault that eventually recaptured the island in 1945. There is a useful account of Corregidor's prewar history, the American fortifications, and the doomed campaign against the Japanese. Most of the book is a bullet-by-bullet account of the attack by the 503d Parachute Regiment, based on numerous interviews and recollections. The Impossible Mission

An amazinf feat of daring by a group of outnumbered Paratroopers, less than 3000, fighting against the best Japan had, namely Japanese Imperial Tiger Marines. Their strength was said to be over 6800. Only 21 Japaneses surrendered , 17 lived surviving their wounds. A tale of total disregard of human life. Corregidor was a small island fotress built by the US prior to WW2 and carried 56 major cannon emplacements behind concrete walls over 25 feet thick in parts and some sited over 600 feet above some of our forces. At the end of the battle over 6000 Japanese bodies covered the ground and fostered billions of flies and maggots entering our mouths while trying to eat or talk. A horrible experience which cannot be described in mear words. I was there.

Assualt From The Sky.

"Corregidor: The Rock Force Assault" is the story of the island by that name which has played a prominent role in the defense of Manila Harbor. This book gives a good history of the island and the troops who recaptured it in 1945.
The book begins with the story of the conquest of the Philippines by American Forces in 1898 during the Spanish American War. It then continues with the military fortifications of the island during the American Administration. The Japanese conquest of the Philippines culminating in the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor in 1942 set the stage for the American reconquest.
Flanagan does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the assault forces, the 503d Parachute Regimental Combat Team and the 3rd Battalion Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division. We become familiar with the preparations of the 503d in the U. S., Australia and in its jumps at Nadzab in New Guinea and onto Noemfoor Island.
With the invasion of the Philippines proceeding successfully the hour for the redemption of American honor at Corregidor arrived. The small available drop zones on the island made the airborne assault most unlikely and, therefore, a total surprise to the Japanese defenders. Flanagan takes the reader through the challenges met by the assault force, the means of attack by air, sea and land, the Japanese resistance and the descriptions of the ambient conditions which add to the hellish atmosphere of war. The fanatical Japanese resistance captures our amazement while the cave by cave extermination of the enemy brings to mind contemporary reports form Afghanistan.
The emotional climax of the book is Gen. MacArthur's triumphant return to Corregidor, by PT boat, just as he left three years before, during which he orders: "I see the old flag pole still stands. Have your troops hoist the colors to its peak and let no emery ever haul them down."
"Corregidor" is an excellent choice for anyone with an interest in the details of combat or the history of the War in the Philippines.

I was there

I was a pilot on one of the planes the paratroopers in the top of Corregidor so this book describing the assault from the perspective of a paratrooper was extremely interesting to me. I found it factual and it helped me to recall some things that has slipped into the shadowy past. I often wondered what happened to the plane immediately to my right that was hit in the engine as we were over the drop zone. I last saw him descending and trailing black smoke. Flanagan answered my question.

Dandelions on the Wind

Dandelions on the Wind is a story about a woman named Maren who came to America to marry, only to have her fiance reject her due to a hereditary condition that is causing her eyesight to get progressively worse. Since her fiance (Olvie) rejected her, she finds work helping Mrs. Brantenberg around her farm, and helping her to raise her granddaughter Gabi, whose mother died while giving birth and her father reacted to his grief by joining the Army to fight in the Civil War.

Fairly early in the story, Gabi's father , Wooly returns. Mrs. Brantenberg is understandably upset with him , and Gabi, after her initial shock, is happy to finally have him back. Maren hopes Mrs. Brantenberg will allow him to stay, and she finds herself falling in love with him.

Overall, the book is well written and the author's writing style makes for a very easy read. Unfortunately, however, I could not really get into this book.

While the story line is easy to follow and the length makes for a quick read, I didn't really get a feel for the personalities of the characters (with the exception of Gabi). I also felt that the story lacked depth.

I can not comfortably either recommend this book or make a recommendation against it . So instead my suggestion would be that you read the book and decide for yourself.

A Short, Sweet Story

Dandelions on the Wind is the first novella in Mona Hodgson's series: Quilted Hearts. Normally I am not a big fan of novellas. I enjoy novels more because I feel like there can be so much more character development and depth to a story. That being said, while this book was not one of my all-time favorites, I was still able to enjoy the sweet story that was told.

The Civil War has just ended and Maren Jensen is working at Mrs. Brantenberg's farm, helping with the farm chores and taking care of her granddaughter, Gabi. When Gabi's father returns, after not having heard from him in several years, Maren realizes that now is the time to go back to Denmark. Having come to America as a mail-order bride, her groom decided he didn't want her and while she has grown to love Mrs. Brantenberg and Gabi, she doesn't want to impose forever.
However, Woolly, Gabi's father, has come to enjoy the presence of Maren and he doesn't want to see her return to Denmark.

Ms. Hodgson did a great job of creating an enjoyable story in this short novella. I liked the characters and overall setting of the book as well. I really like any story set during the civil war time period, whether pre-civil war, during the civil war, or post-civil war. I look forward to reading the other books in the Quilted Hearts series as well.

Good and Easy Read

I read "Dandelions of the Wind", a novella which is the first book of The Quilted Heart series, by Mona Hodgson.

I really liked this story of a post-civil War Missouri family. The story is mainly about Maren, an immigrant mail-order-bride from Denmark who comes to the United States to marry. Because she is gradually losing her eyesight, the groom refuses to marry her. She is offered shelter in the form of room and board in return for working on the farm and caring for the granddaughter of Mrs. Brantenberg.

The girl's father, Rutherford (Wooley) returns after a four-year absence, during which he fought in the Civil War and in the west against the Native Americans. He left the farm after the death of his wife, Mrs. Brantenburg's daughter, in childbirth. He has come home to make amends and to be with his daughter again. He doesn't count on meeting the lovely Maren.

This is a very sweet story and I wish it had been longer. I hope the subsequent stories in this series pick up where this one left off. I would very much like to find out what happens next.

Set in Rome in 1961 during the filming of the classic Hollywood film, Cleopatra starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Diana Bailey takes up a job on the film set in Rome as a historical advisor, leaving older husband Trevor back home to fend for himself, she knows this is one opportunity that she just cannot turn down.

She soon makes friends with a young make-up artist called Helen, and soon Diana is enjoying living her new life and realises that her marriage is in trouble. She becomes close to Ernesto a fellow member of the film crew. She even manages to rub shoulders with the great Elizabeth Taylor herself too. Things are going great for Diana.

Then tragedy strikes and Diana finds herself in deep trouble, and it is Trevor who comes to her rescue but will it save their marriage?

The Affair manages to capture an era of time of Hollywood glamour and by mixing fact and fiction it has created a wonderful story, of love and passion with the very public affair between the two leading stars. In this book Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton are in the background, while our leading lady Diana Bailey a small-fry in a big film production is centre stage in this story.

I really liked the facts about the filming of Cleopatra at the back of this book too. This year is the fiftieth anniversary of the film, and although I have seen many films this is a film I have not seen but now I really want to see this film. I also found myself in The Works book store yesterday buying books on Taylor and Burton. So the book really inspired me to go research myself to see which parts of the book are fact and which are fiction.

The Affair is a book not to be missed an amazing and interesting read that I enjoyed from beginning to end. I really do recommend reading this book.

An incredible story that you can't miss!

Diana is a home-maker, when one fine day, she bags an offer from the 21st Century Fox cinemas to act as a "Historical Advisor" on the film sets of the movie Cleopatra in Rome, since she had done a P.H.D on life’s and tales about the most notorious queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. Diana's husband, Trevor, who is an academician, disregards Diana's lucrative offer, but Diana takes up the offer with a heavy heart by listening to herself. Upon her arrival, Diana realizes that the already high budget movie is falling behind finances and is drying up eventually to fulfill Elizabeth's all demands and wishes. But Diana's life changes around when she falls into the arms of an Italian man named Ernesto, who too used to work on the sets of Cleopatra and soon confiding in her new-found best friend, Helen, who used to be the make-up artist. But Helen harvested a dark secret and a deadly habit in the dark alleys and dingy bars of Rome, which eventually led her to an un-fateful road. Scott, a young journalist is on the fire to give a lesson and expose one of the most famous mafia kings to the world and is also making each and every ends to get a clear shot of La Taylor to satisfy his boss. When Richard Burton arrives on the sets, a passionate relationship grows behind the trailer doors and studio offices in Rome and the whole world is chasing them to get a shot of their affair.

Doesn't the blurb sounds awesome, reality mixed with fiction and author has successfully delivered her story to her readers. Flawlessly written and with such an extraordinary plot, the book is indeed an engrossing read. From the very first page, I got hooked into the tale and the pace is way too fast, and with the author's striking flow of narration, the book becomes more interesting. The author has blended the storyline of Taylor-Burton affair along with her own story about Diana, Scott, Trevor and Helen and about Italian mafia. While reading, I could feel the thrill running down my bones, and I could feel the author's passion in her words. The story takes you on a roller-coaster ride filled with emotions, mystery and too many affairs around the sets of Cleopatra movie in Rome. Not only the author has spun a mind-blowing tale but also the author has captured the flawless actress, Elizabeth Taylor so remarkably with her words.
Don't miss out this must-read book which not only awes you with the most famous affair of the world but also captivates you with the unraveling mystery about drugs and mafia lords.

P.S. Did you know that Cleopatra movie almost made 21st Century Fox cinemas bankrupt and the president of 21st Century Fox cinemas had to resign from his position? We can rightly say that Elizabeth Taylor was indeed an incredible actress!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book; a little historicaal backround to a romance that enthralled the world. A lovely way to escape into romance and history all mixed in with a murder mystery. Really easy read and a lot of fun.
