A Good, Short Introduction

This short book provides an introduction to fluctuating phenomena that is equally appropriate for both physics and EE students. Many of the examples use electric circuits, and most of these use vacuum tubes. This is rather unfortunate as vacuum tubes haven't been a standard topic of either physics or EE curricula for decades.
Nonetheless, this book manages to take the reader quite far, quite fast. There are only three chapters. The first chapter "General Survey" introduces the basic ideas and provides two very important examples: Brownian motion and shot noise in vacuum tube diodes. Langevin's approach is introduced along with several important results that are used throughout the remainder of the text.
Chapter two is in many ways the core of the book and provides a number of important results and examples including the Wiener-Khinchine theorem and the Fokker-Planck equation. We are also provided with some rumination over the transition between reversible and irreversible behavior in physical systems.
The third chapter is devoted to noise in electric circuits, and the book winds up with several appendices to which have been relegated bits of mathematical background and a few proofs of some of the results that appear in the book.
This book is quite good and definitely worth taking a look at for the student new to this area.
