The King of Schnorrers (Jewish, Judaism), by Israel Zangwill

Author Israel Zangwill best typifed the comic spirit of London's Jewish ghetto by immortalizing the schnorrer (beggar) — in particular, the character of Manasseh Bueno Barzillai Azevedo da Costa, a Sephardic panhandler who developed begging into a fine art. The robust and often hilarious tale tells how Manasseh combines insolence with resourcefulness to reduce London's best-known philanthropist to a fish handler; how he reacts to his daughter's love for a socially inferior beggar; and how he manages to parlay her marriage into a life-time pension for himself from his synagogue. Brimming with wit and wisdom and widely regarded as one of the author's most enduring works, The King of Schnorrers is a literary gem offering hours of entertaining humor and satire.

The Lesser Known Comedies
By Amazon Customer
Few Americans will recognize the name Israel Zangwill (1864 - 1926), but he was a prominent author, essayist, and teacher in England in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. He was famous enough in his day that his photo even appeared on the cover of the September 17, 1923 issue of Time Magazine. His many books are generally split into two categories, Jewish and non-Jewish works. His Jewish works explore the life of the Anglo-Jew living in England, not just during the time Zangwill lived, but in previous ages as well. They include popular, yet now more difficult to obtain, works such as Children of the Ghetto (1892) and Ghetto Comedies (1907). The King of the Schnorrers (1894) is possibly his most popular, and easy to obtain, work in this category.

It is important when reading The King of the Schnorrers to understand the context under which it was written. As such, the introduction included in the Dover edition linked in this review is incredibly userful. Not only does it describe Yiddish terms such as schnorrer (beggar), but it puts the work in its historical and cultural context for the reader who might not otherwise understand it.

This edition also keeps in mind the reader will not necessarily understand Yiddish or Hebrew, and as such, keeps translations next to the original text. I have to admit, it was a little odd to see bar mitzvah translated as confirmation, even if it is sort of correct.

The book's humor was on the level of Voltaire's Candide. It was quick, funny and very, very satirical. I enjoyed the material for the same reasons I love Candide. The satire is so tongue in cheek, often the people it was directed at would completely miss it.

There's pure Anglo-Saxon humor in the fact the Jews of England were segregated to the Ghetto, and yet at the same time, the Sephardic (Spanish/Portuguese) Jews segregated themselves further from the European Tedesco Jews. Combine this with the hilarity of a beggar who believes working will lead to a life of ruin, and conning the average working Jew out of his hard earned wages is his right in life, and hilarity ensues.

This is a very short book, only six chapters. However, the language is a little harder to get through if you wish to understand the full breadth of humor being offered. It might take a bit longer to read than assumed at first glance.

Overall, both the story and the satire are worth the read. This book is a little hard to get, but if it can be managed, I very much recommend the read.

A masterpiece of Jewish humor
By feldenstein calypso
as you probably see there are many versions of this half-forgotten book floating around and, as i write, one positive but curiously mild review so i thought i would weigh in here where i might have some impact.

this book is beautiful.

not beautiful like lovely writing in particular, though certainly israel zangwill wrote well, but beautiful in intricacy and fun and a level of cleverness so profound it boggles the mind. i suspect that the king of the schnorrers impact on later jewish humorists has been vastly understated. i am thinking particularly of groucho marx (who had a brilliant career more or less playing a sort of comic version of our main character here), but also through him a passage to people like woody allen (um, are there people like woody allen?) and jerry seinfeld, lenny bruce, sarah silverman... indeed while this book is deeply concerned in its way with the particularities of the jewish communities of 18__'s london and with jewish law it is a highly secular and universal work of humor and a brilliant satire of the malleability of religious law (and, in its way then, law, custom and social compacts in general). in this way it bridges a gap from, say, a sholem aleichem to, well, the urban american jewish humor that has had such a profound influence on our culture. but beyond the satirical brilliance and nuance of this book i would like to commend it as simply enormously fun and readable. it's social vision is sophisticated and strangely contemporary and it is funny. our main character is enormous, ridiculous, ferocious and fascinating, someone you sort of root for in a state of horror, but i love how he is not invincible, and the person to whom he is vulnerable (if you can call it that, probably it is all part of da costa's (our hero's) plans) expresses for me the touch of sweetness that just keeps the humanity of the book afloat.

the story is told in tight, marvelously put together chapters that nearly stand on their own. the plot work has that wonderful tight and suprising gearlike quality that is so satisfying to read, like in mysteries where the great detective works along a plan we only catch confusing glimpses of but all falls spectacularly into place by the end. i first found this book with a passage in a big paperback collection of jewish humour about 20 years ago and i was immediatly smitten. if you enjoy sharp and intricate humor, a touch of nuttiness, and perverse insight so twisted it becomes simple and profound i could not recommend a book more than this one.

Poor Print
By A. Corre
I love Zangwill's books, since they represent very well a world gone by, and are quite rewarding. Just a word about the physical characteristic of this hardback edition. I wanted to buy the King of the Schnorrers for a friend as a Purim gift, so I chose the most expensive hardback edition, even though much cheaper ones are available. The type in this book has a large letter to start each chapter. It is virtually inkless and illegible. While this does not spoil the story, this drawback is distracting, and just should not have happened. A publisher should not put defective books on the market. Even in this day and age some quality control is called for.
