About the Author
Diane J. Briars, PhD, is a mathematics education consultant and is codirector of the Algebra Intensification Project, an NSF-supported design-based research project to support underprepared algebra students. Previously, she served for twenty years as mathematics director for the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Under her leadership, Pittsburgh schools made significant progress in increasing student achievement through standards-based curricula, instruction, and assess¬ment. Dr. Briars was a member of the writing team for the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards and the Professional Standards for Assessing Mathematics.

Dr. Briars is also involved in national initiatives in mathematics education. She has served as a member of many committees, including the National Commission of Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century headed by Senator John Glenn. She is a former president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics and board member for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and she has served in leadership roles for other organizations, including the College Board and the National Science Foundation. She earned a PhD in mathematics education and her master's and bachelor s degrees in mathematics from Northwestern University, and she did postdoctoral study in the Psychology Department of Carnegie-Mellon University. She began her career as a secondary mathematics teacher.

Harold Asturias, PhD, served as the director of the New Standards Portfolio Assessment Project and the Mathemat¬ics Unit for New Standards a project to develop national standards and assessments. In that capacity, he was part of a team of experts whose efforts, involving many states and over a thousand teachers, resulted in the successful production of two assessment systems: the New Standards Portfolio and the Reference Examination. In addition, he was part of the team that produced the New Standards Performance Standards and was a member of the writing group for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Assessment Standards for School Mathematics. Asturias has also served on the board of TODOS: Mathemat-ics for ALL, an NCTM affiliate whose mission is to advocate for an equitable and high quality mathematics education for all students-in particular, Hispanic/Latino students. At the state level, he has served as president of the California Mathematics Council.

Asturias earned a professional medical doctor degree and surgeon degree from the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in Central America and a degree in elementary teacher credentials with emphasis on bilingual education, Spanish, from the California State University School of Education in Los Angeles.

This book gives great ideas about how to work together with other math teachers to implement common core math and RTI in middle school. It is research driven and describes teaching strategies that have a high impact on student learning. It clearly explains and gives examples of how to get students using the mathematical practices. Before I read this, I didn't really understand how working in PLC's would change how students learn math. Now it is clear. Our teaching team uses the free reproducible tools to work together, monitor our progress, and assess the progress of the students. It shows a teaching-learning-assessment cycle that helps me make common core and RTI work. I recommend this book to all middle school math teachers, even if your school is too small to have math teams. It will show you how to really make a difference in student math understanding.

Practical and useful

I am using this book with the math teachers in my school to guide our implementation of the Common Core standards. There are many useful documents in the book and on the accompanying website that are helping to guide our work and allowing us to build that PLC type of team that we are striving for. There is a great deal of useful information in this book, including a breakdown of the math content contained within the standards.

Some Good Information

I liked this book because of its focus on middle school mathematics. It does a good job of explaining the CCSS in math and the goals of those standards. If you are head of the math department and need to set up a PLC for your grade levels, you will find some good information here. A lot of the information about the CCSS, however, is probably something that you have received or are receiving in your in-services. I bought the book on Kindle and it is difficult to see or read the charts and examples contained in the book. I would suggest purchasing a hard copy of the book if you are planning to use it as a reference source.
