Review
An exclusive review of the book by Mr. Subroto Bagchi, Chairman, Mindtree Ltd Shital is one of the most pleasing personalities I have ever come across. She is well informed, authentic, she likes her work and she is here to tell us, guide us all, on how to handle ourselves professionally. The naturalist, the barber and the photo journalist are important ambassadors of India. They symbolize the concept of professionalism as much as you and I do. Given the right inputs most organizations are either ignorant or ill-equipped they could be well-informed, well rounded, pleasant and in the process, personally way more successful. The book is written lucidly. It should be read by every young professional and I hope that it would be soon translated into regional languages soon so that the message spreads into the hinterland where India is emerging faster than we realize. Go pick up your copy of the book. Gift it to anyone who you think can benefit from it and help make the Indian professional world-class. --Mindtree India Ltd.

A rave review of the book by Mr. Abhijit Bhaduri, Chief Learning Officer, Wipro India Shital Kakkar Mehra has brought out a very well written book called Business Etiquette for the Indian Professional. I loved the book. The chapterization is very well thought through. There is stuff on basic hygiene (eg Use a deo, groom yourself well kind of stuff). Then there is stuff on office etiquette how to behave with your colleagues in formal and informal situations. So eat something before you go for a business meal to let the food not distract the conversation. There are etiquette tips on how to behave in public places. When the flight lands, do not whip out your phone instantly and start doing a live broadcast of how you have just landed and that you are still inside the plane etc. I liked the book. It is well written. Shital Kakkar Mehra is one of the most experienced practitioners of corporate etiquette and international protocol in India today, having trained over three thousand executives, focusing on the specific requirements of the global Indian. She has been doing a column on etiquette for The Economic Times newspaper. So I would highly recommend that you read the book. I loved it. --Blog Reviews

like writing emails and setting meetings
By Jewel Kennington
Not a helpful book. I am a TESOL teacher and coach. I bought this book to help me in coaching an Indian lady in improving her communication skills. This book covers standard stuff, like writing emails and setting meetings, info you can get from any book on business communications. Nothing new here. Not much help about improving language skills and manners, important things for Indian people to learn. Don't waste your money on this.

7 Things I love about this book
By K E E singh
# 1 - The FAQ section:
At the end of each chapter there is a FAQ (frequently asked questions) section which presents some highly interesting day-to-day dilemmas with the ideal solution. For example: “My job involves cross-border business. Should I display my Indian identity or dilute it by applying the global ways of doing business?” In this book the reader will get answers to 44 different scenarios that one can easily relate to.

# 2 – The in-depth information

Whatever topic the book author presents, you will notice a lot of in-depth information and advice that other similar etiquette books cover only in a superficial way. For example:
In many etiquette books you will learn about dining etiquette (e.g. the ideal wine-food combination) but in this book (in the “Dining and Entertaining Finesse” section) you will also learn about 10 different types of cheese and what the specific cheese-wine combination should be. Never seen before, great!
In many etiquette books you will come across odour-related issues and how to deal with them. But in the business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra you will find the answer to mouth odour, smoker’s odour, body odour and feet odour!
In many etiquette books you will learn about the importance of accepting compliments graciously. This book provides interesting insights on how compliments are being perceived in different parts of the world and gives you concrete examples of what you should NOT say (rejecting the compliment, underplaying it, making others look stupid, being cocky, deflecting the compliment or being completely lost for words).

# 3 - Well researched resources.
The fact that also other interesting book resources have been mentioned showed that the book author researched her topic well and also didn’t hesitate to give credit where credit is due. It motivated me to put some of them on my reading wish list.

# 4 - Some personal (international) experierences.
Shital Kakkar Mehra used the power of storytelling by sharing some of her own or other business professionals’ personal experiences. This approach worked very well since it helped to emphasise certain points. Adding personal episodes is something that always adds credibility and makes the whole message more memorable and meaningful.

# 5 - The comparison: Indian vs. International etiquette
I really loved the comparisons between Indian etiquette and other countries’ etiquette rules in this book. Usually etiquette books focus only on one specific country’s etiquette rules (depending on the book author’s nationality) or they talk about the different etiquette rules by listing them country by country.

The business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra had a bit a different approach in giving you the direct comparison between Indian customs and other Western or Asian countries, making also a comparison between monochromic and polychromic countries. For example, how Indians and Americans view contracts, Indian dress attire and international business attire, the seating protocol in Indian companies vs. the arrangement in China and Japan, how touching a stranger’s child and calling them cute is interpreted differently in India compared to Germany, the extent to which small talk should be discussed in Middle East, Latin America, Europe or Asia. Where in this world is alcohol consumption considered as an integral part of business entertaining and where is it an absolute taboo? In what countries is making personal calls at work considered normal and where would it be inappropriate? In this book you will find all these answers. For me personally, the most memorable example of cultural differences was the story of an Indian Executive and a German Executive when they visited each other’s countries (p. 276

# 6 - The visual images.
Out of all the etiquette books that I’ve read so far, the business etiquette book by Shital Kakkar Mehra is the only etiquette book that included the most useful images. It covers several topics in a very visual way. For example, do you know: the difference between a cut-away collar and a wing-tip collar, the difference between a single-breast suit and a double-breast suit, the meaning of hands clasped behind the back? Do you know how much the distance between the social/public zone and the personal zone is, how a Tom Collings glass and a highball glass look like? How do you exchange business cards at a cocktail party? Do you know where the principal guest, principal host and their interpreters are sitting at a table? What is the difference between a glove handshake and a bone-crusher handshake? In this book you will find all the answers to these questions and much more. Often just words don’t suffice, and seeing additional pictures makes it surely easier to remember. Well done for including visuals, it does make a difference!

# 7 - New interesting topics.
There were some other new topics that general etiquette books don’t focus on in much detail. For example, elevator etiquette, safety tips for female business professionals when travelling abroad, dealing with sexual harassment at the workplace, restroom etiquette and international dining do’s and don’ts. Knowing the right etiquette rules when dealing with interpreters (before, during and after using their services) was a topic that was highly interesting. I did not find anything on this topic in other etiquette books so far. Learning about different types of bosses (the alcoholic boss, the workaholic boss, the bully, the bragging boss) and certain employees (gossip monger, the show-off, the human encyclopaedia, Mr/Ms Impolite, the over-friendly cling wrap) and how to deal with them is surely something everyone should learn!

How would I rate the book?

I would give the book “Business Etiquette: A Guide for the Indian Professional” a 9.5 out of 10. I would have given it a 10/10 if those professionals who were involved in publishing this book would have paid a bit more attention to detail. I was surprised to spot some mistakes here and there. However, I must say that after reading lots of books, it’s still a rarity nowadays to find a book that is 100 % flawless. Being an Italian citizen, I do not fully agree with the description on how pasta – spaghetti and penne – should be eaten the authentic Italian way (see p. 229).

Ingenious: A True Story of Invention, Automotive Daring, and the Race to Revive America, by Jason Fagone

An epic tale of invention, in which ordinary people’s lives are changed forever by their quest to engineer a radically new kind of car

In 2007, the X Prize Foundation announced that it would give $10 million to anyone who could build a safe, mass-producible car that could travel 100 miles on the energy equivalent of a gallon of gas. The challenge attracted more than one hundred teams from all over the world, including dozens of amateurs. Many designed their cars entirely from scratch, rejecting decades of thinking about what a car should look like.
Jason Fagone follows four of those teams from the build stage to the final race and beyond—into a world in which destiny hangs on a low drag coefficient and a lug nut can be a beautiful talisman. The result is a gripping story of crazy collaboration, absurd risks, colossal hopes, and poignant losses. In an old pole barn in central Illinois, childhood sweethearts hack together an electric-powered dreamboat, using scavenged parts, forging their own steel, and burning through their life savings.  In Virginia, an impassioned entrepreneur and his hand-picked squad of speed freaks pool their imaginations and build a car so light that you can push it across the floor with your thumb. In West Philly, a group of disaffected high school students come into their own as they create a hybrid car with the engine of a Harley motorcycle. And in Southern California, the early favorite—a start-up backed by millions in venture capital—designs a car that looks like an alien egg.
Ingenious is a joyride. Fagone takes us into the garages and the minds of the inventors, capturing the fractious yet beautiful process of engineering a bespoke machine. Suspenseful and bighearted, this is the story of ordinary people risking failure, economic ruin, and ridicule to create something vital that Detroit had never pulled off. As the Illinois team wrote in chalk on the wall of their barn, "SOMEBODY HAS TO DO SOMETHING. THAT SOMEBODY IS US."

From Booklist
Fagone, author and journalist, tells the true story of the race to capture the Automotive X Prize, the $10 million offering by a California foundation to anyone who could make a safe, practical, 100-mile-per-gallon car. The only standard for winning was the quality of the machine, and all contestants were welcome, big companies and entrepreneurs alike. Fagone zeroed in on four teams, ordinary people striving to be extraordinary. We follow the teams with Fagone, including the winning entry, the Very Light Car built by the Virginia-based team Edison2. The author tells the remarkable stories of the contestants as they sought the prize money during the recent economic downturn and in the process transformed their lives with their creativity, courage, and determination. This is an entertaining book that offers insight and inspiration for a wide range of library patrons who could be thinking about inventing something that matters. --Mary Whaley

We still got it
By David Wineberg
Ingenious is the story of driven (there's just no way around car metaphors in this society) tinkerers. They still exist, but the outlets for their creativity are fewer and fewer. Between monolithic industry and monolithic government, it's just harder to break out. This is the inside story of several teams that competed for the X Prize for cars.

It was a rocky road, with ever changing rules, ever changing demands, ever changing requirements, and of course - underfunded participants. Jason Fagone, who fortunately for all readers is not a car or racing fanatic, visited and followed them as they designed and built, tested and ran their exceptionally green vehicles.

Even the grand prize money got halved, as additional categories were included later. The winner received $5 million, intended to help commercialize the winning design, but of course almost all the money went towards backfilling the gaping pothole the project created, and the car has yet to see anything like production.

The hands down outstanding character in this drama is Oliver Kuttner, a man who continually defies characterization, let alone stereotyping. He is many things to many people, and his actions, reactions, attitudes and demeanors can never be assumed. His passions run deep, his skills are many, and his team deservedly wins, thought the victory is at best bittersweet (which for spoiler reasons is all I can say). He is fascinating.

That a bunch of guys (and the occasional spouse) in places all over the country can design and build cars that get four times the mileage of the major manufacturers says lots. Not to dwell on the negative, it says we still got it. We can summon up the ingenuity and desire to creatively destroy an industry - if it weren't such a monster.

Ingenious reads like a reality show, cutting back and forth between the teams, focusing on individuals and moving on. Our culture in a nutshell.

Fun story of technology excellence with a bit of hyperbole
By Joel Avrunin
Ingenious is an excellent tale of the challenge to build more efficient automobiles, all driven by an old concept - pay a prize for technological innovation. Ever since the prize was claimed for the solution to longitude at sea, the motivation of a prize for innovation has been appealing when it comes to taking a huge leap in technology. In the story of ingenious, we learn not only about the technologies required to get to more efficient automobiles, but the people behind those stories.

The book is well written, and the author has a good handle on both the human aspect and the technological aspects of the challenge for efficiency. Many proponents of alternative energy powered cars don't quite get the basic laws of physics - just running your car on ethanol or solar isn't enough. Gasoline is one of the highest density for weight fuels available, and the challenge is largely based on car design in general. In fact, the winning automobile was gas powered. It's not just about alternative energy.

A few times in the book, the author lets his style get away from him and he leaves the proverbial rails. For instance, while talking about poorer students who are working on efficient automobiles, he surmises that poor people "care more" about global warming because they can't move to higher ground when the cities on the East coast get flooded like richer people can. On it's face, this is a bit of a ridiculous claim. Alternative energy cars are largely playthings for the wealthy - most of the poor can't even afford these cars. Most support for these initiatives come from the wealthier segments of society anyways. I think the motivation of poor students to innovate has to do with achieving and building something, rather than fear of their neighborhoods getting flooded. As I said, most of the book is good, but there are a few silly hyperbolic statements like this which caused me some pause.

Recommended story of technological innovation - 4 stars.

An interesting chronicle of innovation and innovators, and they aren't necessarily who you would expect
By James Korsmo
Ingenious tells a rather engaging story of the pursuit of the Automotive X Prize, a contest to design a car that can achieve one hundred miles per gallon and still be practical and usable. The most remarkable part of the story is how "small time" many of the key players are. It's not MIT and major engineering corporations that the book highlights (though a few larger players were in the mix, at least initially), but instead a high school in West Philadelphia, a couple of small start-ups, and a few groups of what can only be called hobbyists. Yet, these are the people who decide to set out on this phenomenally challenging goal. That the story shows how much they can achieve. Every one of the groups that the book follows makes a real push to win the prize. It certainly raises the question, why can't the major automakers do better? (And maybe the better question is why don't consumers push for it?) And one of the fascinating ironies of the book is that the winning vehicle in the primary class was not electric or hybrid or some other innovative and obscure technology but was powered by a motorcycle engine. The technology is here (and probably has been for a while).

The book is an interesting mix of personal stories, interesting technology, and one great big race for the prize. It's well told, and you can tell the author dedicated many years to getting to know these teams and follow their exploits. My biggest complaint is that there aren't way more pictures. When you're talking about unfamiliar technology, or when so much rides on innovative and unfamiliar designs, it would be really helpful to actually see what he's talking about, instead of having to search online for pictures of the odd-looking machines he describes. There are a few snapshots, but not nearly enough. But that doesn't take away from a this book. It's a good read, and an interesting one. Enjoy.

Egyptian Magic, by E. A. Wallis Budge

For millennia, Egypt, the dark land, has been considered the home of magic. The feats of her priests and magicians were renowned throughout the ancient world, from the simplest legerdemain (according to present interpretation) to the heights of necromancy and sorcery. Even their most severe critics, the ancient Hebrews, admitted the power of Egyptian magic. In the famous sorcerers' duel between Moses and Egyptian priests before Pharaoh, the Egyptians were almost as skilled as Moses.
This well-known study of ancient Egyptian magic, by E. A. Wallis Budge, long curator of Egyptian antiquities at the British Museum, sums up everything that is known about the wonder-working of ancient Egypt. After a general discussion of the role of magic in Egyptian religion proper — Dr. Budge covers the powerful amulets that warded off evil spirits; the scarabs of immortality; the use of wax images and spirit placements; magical pictures and formulas; magic via the secret name; magic of sounds; rituals; curses; destruction of hostile magic; determination of fortunate dates, and many of the other practices of the ancient Nile dwellers.
Dozens of magic formulas are given in full — both in the original Egyptian sounds, as far as they can be recreated — and in English; dozens of excerpts are also given from the magical papyroi, tomb inscriptions, and other sources. Many wonderful tales are told in these Egyptian stories; mind control, enforcing will upon animals, suspended animation, calling up the dead, finding ancient books of incredible magical power, and other miraculous events that we may or may not believe.

From the Back Cover
In this classic work, first published in 1899, one of the most prolific Egyptologists of the Victorian era offers his renowned insight into the magical power names, spells, and talismans held for the ancient Egyptians. How did beliefs that predated the worship of deities come to become associated with controlling gods and goddesses? How did magical amulets ward off evil spirits? What role did scarabs serve in bestowing immortality?

The writings of E.A. Wallis Budge are considered somewhat controversial today because of his use of an archaic system of translation, but useful illustrations and an abundance of information make them necessary works for students of ancient civilizations as well as those of the evolution of historical study. This entertaining overview of the connection between religion and magic in ancient Egypt remain a vital resource today.

A good introduction to the Egyptian mysteries.
By Brian D. Baird
Unlike most of Budge's other works, this is written for the layman to understand. Though he still cannot resist showing off his skills as a scholar, one doesn't need a vast knowledge of Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, and Arabic alphabets to gain the book's full value (I often wonder if at some point in his career Budge didn't "sell out," writing books that people outside Oxford and Cambridge would want to read.). Virtually every amulet and talisman is covered, along with their proper use and materials they were made from. As always, the introduction and stories Budge gives are fascinating as well, giving tales not generally told in modern times and the various mechanics of how the Egyptian priests and magicians performed their magic. One can see why Budge's work is still in print, as he offers the reader a maximum of research and scholarship with none of the new-age BS that is so common in such books written today.

To be read with its companion
By Paul Secrett (ptp@hnc.se)
To get complete satisfaction from this book you need to read it along with its companion book Egyptian Religion. These two books together go a lot further in explaining the myths, the reasons for and the usage of Egyptian artefacts than many other books which would cost you twice as much for half the pleasure.

A century old and biased to boot
By DAJ
Budge is known among Egyptologists today for being cited again and again by amateurs. His works—this one was originally published in 1901—are badly out of date, but they show up everywhere because they're out of copyright. The problem is still more serious when Budge discusses religion, the study of which changed dramatically in the mid- to late 20th century.

Egyptian Religion, a companion volume to this one, mostly covers aspects of Egyptian religion that Budge and his readers found sympathetic (i.e., those that resembled Christianity). This one is mostly about what he calls near the outset "gross and childish superstition"—a classic example of the way people use "religion" to refer to beliefs and practices that they like and "magic" for those they don't. The book lumps together all kinds of miscellaneous practices, as shown by the title of the last chapter: "Demoniacal Possession, Dreams, Ghosts, Lucky and Unlucky Days, Horoscopes, Prognostications, Transformations, and the Worship of Animals." Other topics covered include mummification and funerary rites, amulets, spells, and the power that the Egyptians ascribed to names, demonstrated with overlong quotations from ancient Egyptian stories.

Most of what Budge says isn't exactly wrong, but there are better and more recent books on the subject. Religion and Ritual in Ancient Egypt discusses all types of Egyptian religious practices. Bob Brier's Ancient Egyptian Magic is an unsystematic collection somewhat like this one, while Geraldine Pinch's Magic in Ancient Egypt and Maarten Raven's Egyptian Magic are a bit more thoughtful. To a greater or lesser extent, they all have problems defining magic, a problem tackled most convincingly in The Mechanics of Ancient Egyptian Magical Practice, an academic work that usefully discusses many types of ritual on the way to its conclusion. When discussing ancient Egypt, if there's any value to the term, "magic" is a synonym for the Egyptian word heka, a principle that is integral to Egyptian religious practice. Viewed in that light, it makes a certain amount of sense to call many of these practices "magic"—just not in the biased, haphazard way that Budge did it.

The Mystics of Spain, by E. Allison Peers

During the sixteenth century — the golden age of Spanish mysticism — Roman Catholicism produced a thoroughly orthodox form of mysticism, a type of meditation that lay at the core of religious beliefs and was practiced to raise spiritual consciousness. In this authoritative book, a leading specialist in the field presents a comprehensive, ground-breaking study of the works and personalities of fifteen mystical authors. A brief exploration of the period serves as a background to extracts from the authors’ writings.
Included are Juan de Ávila and his “Letter to a religious, urging him to the perfect love of God”; St. Teresa of Jesus and her “An exclamation of the soul to God”; and St. John of the Cross, represented in part by his best-known work, “Dark Night of the Soul.” The text also contains “A contemplation to obtain love” by St. Ignatius of Loyola, as well as the meditations of Alonso de Orozco, Luis de Granada, Diego de Estella, Luis de León, and Pedro Malón de Chaide, among others. A list of books is provided for those who wish to make this anthology a starting point for further study.

a true gem
By LuelCanyon
Though a number of excellent translations of S. Teresa of Jesus and S. John of the Cross hold forth at present, none yet has rivaled the monumental work of translation and historical scholarship of the great English scholar Edgar Allison Peers (1891-1952), holder of the Gilmour Chair of Spanish at Liverpool University. His scholarship is permeated with an intense love of 16th century Spanish mysticism, and this slim volume is a masterclass not only in the theory and history of Spanish mysticism, but Peers leads us into the realms of love that characterize Christian mysticism in general. The fifteen studies that comprise this book include not only the better known of the Spanish mystics (Ramon Lull, Peter of Alcantara, Francisco de Osuna, as well as Teresa and John of the Cross), but Diego de Estella's Devout Meditations ("How love bears us to God..."), Alonzo de Orozco's "Last Degree of Contemplation", and Pedro Malon de Chaide's "One thing is needful". Vivid compressions drawn from Peers' vital masterpiece "Studies of the Spanish Mystics" (Sheldon Press London: 2volumes), this eye-opening little compendium is pure honey drawn by the master himself no less engaged, and indispensable in attaining to the heart of Spanish religious experience. Solid recommendation.

From Booklist
Growing up in the early-eighteenth century as the privileged only child of a household slave and her plantation owner on a tiny West Indian island, Joseph Boulogne heard music from around the globe, and he learned to play violin. After his father took him and his mother to Paris, Boulogne lived free, although he still suffered discrimination as a mulatto. As he grew up, he became a gifted, feted student who was taught by two great masters and given a beautiful instrument before he played first violin with a Paris orchestra and eventually became its conductor. By 30, he was a star, the first musician of color to play for royalty and a renowned composer. An authors note fills in more facts, but unfortunately, there are no sources included in this picture-book biography about a figure rarely featured in books for youth. The full-page, richly colored paintings give a strong sense of the changing settings, from plantation to palace, but most moving are the close-ups of the extraordinary musician with his fingers on the violin strings. Grades 1-3. --Hazel Rochman

BEFORE THERE WAS MOZART Showcases The Importance Of Believing and Achieving
By Cyrus Webb
I have to admit that before reading BEFORE THERE WAS MOZART that I didn't remember hearing the story of Joseph Boulogne. How thankful I am that Lesa Cline-Ransome and JAmes Ransome have given us this inspiring story in such a beautiful way that will not only entertain but educate.

BEFORE THERE WAS MOZART shares the story of Joseph Boulogne, a boy born into at a time when many were defined by what they looked like and what they had instead of what they had to offer. For him, life was a complicated dance between the challenges of having a mother of color and a father of means. The mixture created just the right circumstances, however, for him to be educated and grow (as well as nurture) a love of music.

The Ransomes have taken this amazing story and presented it in a way that parents can not only share it with their children but read it for encouragement as well. The message of Joseph's life includes the importance of walking in your destiny and never allowing what others think about you to define who you are. Because of his hard work and determination, he was able to reach heights and places that would have seen impossible to so many.

His story and what he was able to achieve reminds me of the prophetic words of Proverbs 22:29: "Have you beheld a man skillful in his work? Before kings is where he will station himself; he will not station himself before commonplace men."

What an inspiration for the youth

Nothing but Trouble: The Story of Althea Gibson

Before There Was Mozart, The Story of Joseph Boulogne, Chevalier de Saint-George (by Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome) [...] chronicles an amazing story of Joseph, who played a significant part in the musical style of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At the time of his birth it was foretold that he would one day meet the king and queen of France. Joseph had a very inspiring life that would have a great influence upon his future and helped to create his signature violin style.

As a young adult he began playing in an orchestra, Le Concert des Amateurs alongside Joseph Gossec, one of the finest composers. He later received a prestigious position as the first violinist and timekeeper for the orchestra which consisted of forty violinists, twelve cellos, eight double basses and a multitude of flutes, bassoons, trumpets and oboes. Under his direction the orchestra grew tremendously at which time Joseph had also created his new violin technique, deux symphonies concertantes.

Later, Mozart went from watching Joseph to being announced on the same performance bill. The prediction on Joseph's life ensued, he peformed before King Louis XVI, Queen Marie Antoinette and the entire royal court and was invited back on several occasions. His credentials were outstanding from his violin performances to serving his country. The street, Rue du Chevalier de Saint-George in Paris was named in his honor.

You may see the outer appearance of a child but if you look closely you will see their possibilities. Mentor a youth, help them to channel their energy, give them hope and help prepare them for the future.

An Excellent Book
By Affie
I have read "Before There Was Mozart" at least three times. I bought one for myself and one for my grandson. As a former school counselor who helped counselees to start thinking about careers, stepping out on courage, embracing racial indifferences, believing in yourself, the importance of encouragement, how to be persistent and courageous, find ways to be uniquely different, etc., I find this book to be an excellent tool for ages six years to adult. It's great for parents to learn the importance of positive words spoken into the lives of their children, also. I love this book. It is on my coffee table and made available for anyone who visits me to read. My forty-one (41) years old son introduced me to this book. I love it! It is a Christmas gift that I will be sharing with many loved ones this year.

Making Sense of Tantric Buddhism: History, Semiology, and Transgression in the Indian Traditions (South Asia Across the Disciplines), by C

Making Sense of Tantric Buddhism fundamentally rethinks the nature of the transgressive theories and practices of the Buddhist Tantric traditions, challenging the notion that the Tantras were “marginal” or primitive and situating them instead—both ideologically and institutionally—within larger trends in mainstream Buddhist and Indian culture. Critically surveying prior scholarship, Wedemeyer exposes the fallacies of attributing Tantric transgression to either the passions of lusty monks, primitive tribal rites, or slavish imitation of Saiva traditions. Through comparative analysis of modern historical narratives—that depict Tantrism as a degenerate form of Buddhism, a primal religious undercurrent, or medieval ritualism—he likewise demonstrates these to be stock patterns in the European historical imagination. Through close analysis of primary sources, Wedemeyer reveals the lived world of Tantric Buddhism as largely continuous with the Indian religious mainstream and deploys contemporary methods of semiotic and structural analysis to make sense of its seemingly repellent and immoral injunctions. Innovative, semiological readings of the influential Guhyasamaja Tantra underscore the text’s overriding concern with purity, pollution, and transcendent insight—issues shared by all Indic religions—and a large-scale, quantitative study of Tantric literature shows its radical antinomianism to be a highly managed ritual observance restricted to a sacerdotal elite. These insights into Tantric scripture and ritual clarify the continuities between South Asian Tantrism and broader currents in Indian religion, illustrating how thoroughly these “radical” communities were integrated into the intellectual, institutional, and social structures of South Asian Buddhism.

Review

Making Sense of Tantric Buddhism is a major contribution to our understanding of Indian esoteric (or Tantric) Buddhism. Christian K. Wedemeyer writes with verve, humor, and―most crucially―remarkable clarity, managing to explain difficult texts and ideas with great lucidity.

(Roger R. Jackson, Carleton College)

An important new work in Buddhology

(Choice)

Highly Recommended.

(David Templeman South Asia)

Wedemeyer not only provides an advanced introduction, but also makes the reader question the assumptions (and almost everyone has assumptions about Tantra!) they bring to and expect of the study of Tantric Buddhism.

(Justin Thomas McDaniel Religious Studies Review)

A clear work that engages a fresh methodology in order to articulate a new theory of Buddhist antinomianism, offering thereby a novel way to 'make sense' of tantric Buddhism.

(Journal of Religion)

[An] important and useful contribution to the study of Tantric Buddhism in India.

Review

A milestone in the field, this masterful semiological analysis puts it all together: who was practicing Tantric Buddhism, what they were doing, and why; how it all relates to the larger history of South Asian religion; and, most of all, how to understand Tantra's challenging transgressive language. Christian K. Wedemeyer's methodological precision sheds light on traditional and modern historiography alike and makes a critical intervention in the scholarship that will have a major impact for generations to come.

(Janet Gyatso, Harvard University)

yes, it is worth the price
By Edward A. Arnold
This is an academic work for sure, but clever practicing Buddhists should read this as well. It corrects some serious misunderstandings that remain within the popular practice as much as it corrects some academic assertions. So what is being made sense of? Well, the practices that are well known to scholars but perhaps only marginally so to practitioners: the practices of unexcelled yoga tantra which call for an overthrown of normal morality. These are critically important to the academic study of Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, and it is important for non-academics to be aware of this too. So Wedemeyer, a scholar of religion at Chicago and former student of Robert Thurman, takes no prisoners in determining who got what wrong and how to rethink - this means academics and Western practitioners and their teachers. Over successive chapters Wedemeyer makes the case that a straightforward, noncontextual reading of the unexcelled yoga tantras is mistaken: the talk of sex is neither strictly about sex nor strictly about something else - it is both and more. Specifically, sex and consumption of impure substances is about ritual impurity and the performance of nondual awareness. Wedemeyer discusses the linguistic theory behind this interpretation, and it is compelling. He shows just how situated within Indian norms Tantric Buddhism is, and just how situated within monastic Buddhism it is - a crucial rejoinder to the common assumption that the tantras must have come from outside the monastery, as blasphemous as they are. Well, no - it is more complex than that, and even though a full reconstruction is not possible, Wedemeyer makes a provocative case for his conclusions. I'm not going to give any spoilers, so buy the book - it is worth the price and at least two readings. It is the most important book on Buddhism you will read this year, and it will remind you to think beyond just the words of Buddhist scriptures to what may be intended.

A Foundational Study of Tantra
By Rodney P. Devenish
This is an extremely well approached study of an important question in Tantric Buddhism: how to reconcile the transgressive elements of tantra in the light of tantra's underlying spiritual and higher religious goals. What are the main factors and origins that has led to tantra becoming a major field of meditation practice throughout Asia, both for Buddhism and also Hinduism? Christian Wedemeyer, applying a vast first hand knowledge of the subject, has written what is undoubtedly the best study of the subject so far written. His thesis is thoughtful, constructive, learned and informative. Janet Gyatso has called the book a milestone in the field, and I heartily agree. Every Western student of tantra wishing to understand the tantric approach to life and religion, should read this book as a matter of course.

Pretty heavy reading
By Samhara
Pretty heavy reading. The first part dealing with the history and origin theories of Tantric Buddhism is not analysed in much depth. Wedemeyer picks his fights with the older and some now less accepted theories; but doesn't adequately argue for or against some of the more prominent origin theories. Those that look at homologies of mantra, doctrine, deity iconography to identify a inheritance to or from Tantric Buddhism and other traditions.
He does cite some scholars I was previous familiar with, so I immediately picked up a very shallow argument in his analysis of their work; good example was Alexis Sanderson. If you read this book, within the first part and you come across this argument of Shaivism and Tantric Buddhism, it would be worthwhile to google Sanderson and read the articles Wedemeyer cites (they are free to access). He spends a couple of paragraphs dealing with this rather complex issue, most of it is superficial and then goes to slam Sharma and Bhattacharya (for a few pages) - who even a lay reader would read and raise an eyebrow.

The second part is very well written. For those who are heavily interested in Buddhist Tantras - this constitutes essential reading. Wedemeyer makes a fair attempt to give different layers of interpretation and historical theories that all collectively go to explaining the plausible context of the behaviour of the early Buddhist Tantrikas. There is a pretty good study of the Guhyasamaja (in brief).

Overall I was largely impressed by the book, it was at times difficult for me to understand as the language is quite complex. But that is my own personal quibble. I really did appreciate and enjoy reading the second section of the book, although my primary interested was in reading about Buddhist History. This, I am afraid was neither explained well nor reasoned with any degree of evidence or depth that would make what he is saying compelling. Overall the bibliography of the section in itself is an excellent study - thats what I largely appreciated, as the first part does serve as a decent summary of previous authors on the subject of Tantric history.

One of the best popular science books of the Twentieth Century
By ealovitt
The copy of "Rats, Lice, and History" that I own was published in 1963, and this was the 33rd time it had been reissued since first appearing in 1934. I can't imagine Dr. Zinsser's grumpily discursive, masterfully written, and ultimately profound biography of typhus fever ever going completely out of print. Stylistically the only work I can compare it to is Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Where Gibbon occasionally dipped his pen in vinegar and excoriated the Christians, Zinsser dips his pen in hydrochloric acid and savages all of the quaint human customs that have kept Typhus alive and thriving. He shows much more affectionate sympathy for the louse than he does for the General or the Politician.

In the interests of research, Zinsser carried pill boxes of lice under his socks for weeks at a time before taking "advantage of them for scientific purposes." He is not able to tear himself away from these little creatures and address the true subject of his biography, i.e. the typhus germ, until Chapter 12!

However, the journey to Chapter 12 is well worth taking because along the way, Zinsser wittily savages modern biographers, psychoanalysis, astronomers and physicists who "scamper back to God" (Biologists evidently are much less prone to being 'born again'), and of course, all of the wars that have given Typhus countless opportunities to murder lice and humans alike.

"Rats, Lice, and History" should be required reading for would-be writers for its style, would-be Generals for its lessons on how soldiers really die, and for anyone else who is interested in a passionate, eminently witty, one-of-a-kind history of medicine.

Tales from the Miami Hurricanes Sideline: A Collection of the Greatest Hurricanes Stories Ever Told, by Jim Martz

University of Miami football is more than national championships, thirty-game winning streaks, and being a pipeline to the NFL. It’s the Gator Flop, defeating Tulane on a fifth down, and playing three games in eight days. It’s converting third and 44 against Notre Dame, Michael Irvin talking smack with Florida State’s Deion Sanders, and Vinny Testaverde being sacked by hamburgers. It’s the Jet Lag Kids playing seven road games in one season, including one in Tokyo, and it’s the Ibis mascot being arrested on the field in Tallahassee and being nicked by a bullet on Bourbon Street.

Tales from the Miami Hurricanes Sideline is a collection of the greatest anecdotes and stories ever told about ’Canes football. In this newly updated edition, Jim Martz, who has covered the team for more than three decades, chronicles the ups, downs, and sideways of this spirited program that has produced five national championship teams under four different coaches since 1983. They have won under charismatic coaches and under low-key coaches. More than anything, they have won with colorful players. In an age of parity and just a few years removed from the program nearly being dropped, the Hurricanes have defied the odds and become a dynasty of modern college football.

Old Stories
By Mike Masinick
Do not be fooled by the cover featuring Ken Dorsey and Clinton Portis. 95% of the stories in this book are from 1973-1993. I don't think Ken Dorsey's name was even mentioned in the book. This book was clearly written in 1994 and repackaged with a pretty cover. Either that or the author only followed Miami until 1994.

Decent collection of stories
By LSmith
Many college football fans, including myself, did not pay much attention to this school and it's football team until the early 1980's when coach Howard Schnellenberger led them into prominence topped off by the national championship in the 1983-84 season. Since then the football program has produced more championships and NFL players than most of storied programs. This collection of first hand stories by players, coaches and other key personnel in the program is entertaining. I especially liked the stories told by the man who was the team mascot for many years, especially when he was detained by police officers for holding a fire extinguisher so he could douse the flaming spear of the Florida State mascot.

It should be noted that there are also several good anecdotes about some of the year's before the "U" became the power it is now and some may look back on those times fondly as well. All in all a decent book for any Hurricanes fan.
