The master at work

The pencil drawings in this book are fascinating. You can really see how he worked on each design, and occasionally the original sketch has some interesting variations from the final product. I particularly enjoyed some of the less popular works that are to be found here.

Very Interesting

Nice to see some of Mucha's preliminary drawings, which are softer and simpler by nature, often (in my opinion) more beautiful than the finished pieces. Not all his best work, and the black-and-whites are a bit greyish, but highly recommended nonetheless.

Inside the mind of the artist

I appreciated this book as it gives a different perspective on Mucha's works. Being mostly a collection of pencil drawn sketches, it lets you enter the creative process of the artist, while other books I own just present the finished work.

Really useful for who'd like to understand his approach to drawing.

Pretty good

I'm very interested in some-day building a prefab modern home so I bought this book to see some more examples and to try to get an overview of the current state of the industry. There are a lot of nice example houses in this book and there are some nice technical asides that get into detail about certain technologies and government programs that are good to know about.

On the downside, nothing in this book is too in-depth, and there is an annoying tendency in the modern prefab industry to talk about their houses as being somehow affordable for most people, but I've never once seen that as a reality. As much as I'd love to believe that building one of these houses could be cost-effective, the only thing I can really find are examples of wealthy people patting themselves on the back and overpaying for energy efficiency and "non-toxic" building materials. I'd like to see more sources in this industry really get down to the nitty-gritty of the cost-efficiencies involved and rely less on what I see as empty eco-marketing .

It was a very good book, but Not a game changer

I have read most of Sheri Koones books and they all are easy reads and informative. This book is typical of her work. If I were to build a modular house, her expertise would be Priceless. This book has many examples, lots of pictures and is very informative. The book is somewhat repetative, with many of the house examples, having the exact same certifications, energy ratings, or end results. There was nothing revealed in this book that I felt I had to have in my next house. The person who invented the first clear glass window had a revolutionary idea that was a game changer in the housing industry. The idea of modular housing ( factory built housing ) is a game changer. This book didn't reveal any game changing ideas (to me at least). I also thought some real world examples of owners making cost benifit energy decisions would be informative. For example, what is the ROI on buying X's solar panels, or installing R38 fiberglass insulation Vs a higher grade of open cell or closed cell insulation in ... Chicago, or in Florida? Is it better to buy more insulation or to buy more solar panels? Overall it is a good book.

This is quite simply a glimpse into the future of ALL homes, and it will be in our lifetime. Nice thing is, you get real world examples of green technology explained in layman's terms, and some wonderful interior and exterior design ideas to boot. The book is a great addition to the "Prefabulous" line of books, and continues to show that green building is doable, beautiful, and a heck of a lot easier with prefab construction.

About the Author
Kevin is the co-founder and President of Incredible Labs, a startup that's creating a mobile personal assistant named Donna. Previously, he was a product manager at Twitter, leading the redesign of the website, the Director of User Experience at the gaming social network Raptr, and the designer of Yahoo! Pipes. He also co-founded the user experience web comic OK/Cancel, and the online comic publishing network Off Panel Productions. He holds a Masters degree from University College London in Human Computer Interaction and Ergonomics and has presented about design, comics, and augmented reality at numerous conferences including Interaction, IA Summit, User Interface Conference, UXWeek, and South by Southwest. Easy to jump into and fun

If I had to summarize this book in one word it would be accessible. The book itself is very easy to dive into and surprisingly fun to read. Each chapter starts with a summary in comic form and is followed up by more in depth writing on the topic.

The book dives into some pretty in-depth UX concepts but it also presents comic ideas that anyone can latch onto. The most intimidating part of comics is the actual drawing, Kevin goes out of his way to makes this as easy as possible. You don't have to be an artist to apply these concepts to your work.

Fun to read, fun to apply!

This is a fantastic summary of how, when and why to use comics for business. It's like a less philosophical version of Scott McCloud's excellent "Understanding Comics", but specifically applied to business world. I found it particularly useful as a designer, but anyone who is looking to expand their repertoire of communication skills would get a lot out of it.

Aside from the advice in the book being encouraging and comprehensive (the collection of digital tools opened my eyes to a ton of tools I wasn't aware existed), there are two main reasons why I'm glad I bought it (the physical book, specifically):

- the comic summaries of each chapter. There were a couple of chapters that I didn't read in their entirety--I felt like the comic summary gave me enough to realise I didn't need to dive deeper. On the other chapters that I did read in their entirety, the comic summaries serve as a useful reference when I'm flicking back through, looking for something.
- the comics used in the book are NOT the high quality, polished artwork that the author created several years back with his OK/Cancel blog (of which I was a fan). They're rough, almost sloppy at times. And I suspect this is on purpose, to demonstrate to the reader the important fact that your comics do not have to be award-winning artwork that most readers would feel intimidated attempting to mimic. This is a book about communication, and you don't need to be an artist to communicate with comics.

Great guide to life cycle assessment

This is a great guide to life cycle assessment. It is not really a text book but could be used to support a course in life cycle assessment. It not only explains LCA but also points out some of the evolution of LCA and the current controversies and shortcomings as well as providing illustrative examples.

Inexpensive addition to your animal track library

Now here is a bargain of an animal track book:

1. It has dichotomous keys for identifying tracks for mammals and birds. The species list goes into quite a bit of detail beyond "type" or genus.

2. The drawings of tracks and gaits are large and clear.

3. The book is relatively light, and small enough to fit in a small pack or large pocket (7.9" x 5.4" x 0.4"). Paperback.

4. It is inexpensive!

5. It includes notes on reptiles and amphibians.

All track identification books have pluses and minuses. The behavior behind why these tracks are the way they are is not here. Halfpenny's book is much better for this. However, this is a nice book to have in your animal track collection.

BEGS to updated with mofdern color illustrations

Excellent information. Unfortunately, the author was hamstrung by his times. It just wasn't feasible to have color illustrations, or even very many black-and-white ones included in a book when this one was printed.

This one BEGS to be updated. Buy it for that reason if no other. Use if as a road map to your own book - follow this one but take your digital camera along and bring back the pictures this one needs. Write it yourself. Give it your best edit; then hire a professional to take it farther. Design your book in Scribus, hire a cover designer, sell a million pdf's to homeschoolers and then negotiate with the New York publishing houses from a position of power. I just don't have the time.

About the Author
Howard Pyle was a successful American author and illustrator, many of whose books are aimed at younger readers. After only a few formal lessons in artistic techniques, Pyle initially began his career creating illustrations for magazines, finally publishing his first work in Harper s Weekly at the age of twenty-five. Pyle s career took off, and he was soon creating his own stories and publishing illustrated books for children. His most famous work is The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, which was the first cohesive retelling of the medieval legend of Robin Hood. His other famous works include Men of Iron, a tale about knighthood, and a four-volume collection about King Arthur. Howard Pyle died in Florence in 1911 at the age of fifty-eight.

A children's classic, but different from Pyle's usual style.

I'm very lucky. I have an original edition of this book...published in 1903. My grandfather read it to my father, who read it to me, and now I've read it to my children. As much as I loved this book as a boy, I love it more as an adult. This is a story of a shy, sensitive child who endures the taunts of other children, and who runs away to meet the man in the moon, live in the moonhouse, and ultimately to become a man and claim his destiny in the garden on the other side of the moon. Modern kids who live on Nintendo and R-rated movies will struggle at first to adjust to the delicate childishness (in the best sense) of the language and plot, but this is a book that is hard not to love. Read it, and you'll never look at the reflection of moonlight on the water in the same way again. Pyle's illustrations are at least as valuable as his text. They add to the sense of tender melancholy that pervades this book. Pyle fans who are used to his swashbuckling adventures are in for something very different here. The best way for a child to absorb this book is sitting next to his mom or dad on the couch, an arm around his shoulder, listening to the words while studying the pictures. If Pyle's other books are like Wagner's The Ride Of The Valkeries, then The Garden Behind The Moon is like Erik Satie's Trois Gymnopedies.

I liked this book because it was very magical and exciting.

Every night in the fishing village where he lives eleven-year-old David, a moon calf, sits alone by the shore watching the path of light that stretches across the sea until it almost touches the moon. Wondering where it goes, he decides to talk to Hans Krout, the cobbler, about it and learns that the cobbler has been out on the moon path himself. That same night Hans takes him to the shore and ties to teach him how to cross but David gets scared and falls into the water. Then one day he hears the voice of the Moon Angel down by the shore. Moon Angel makes people happy when they're sad, but he also takes something away from them. He tells David that he, Moon Angel, is the Master Cobbler, and David should have Hans bring him to the moon path again. That same night Hans and David make another trip down to the moon path, and this time David crosses it. Once he's on the other side he discovers that the path leads to a magical world behind the moon where David's adventure begins.
When he enters the magical world, the first thing he discovers is the Moon House where the Man in the Moon lives. It's dark and quiet, and every time David looks out a window, he sees something different. A few days later he discovers the Moon Garden. It's a peaceful place with a lot of children living in it. The children begin talking and playing with David, and they don't make fun of him like the children in the village where he lives, because they're all moon calves too. He leaves the Moon Garden, but the Man in the Moon decides that David will be allowed to go there for three days every month. During one of his visits he meets a girl named Phyllis, and they start to become really good friends. They do everything together. But five months later, the guardian of the children tells David that he can't come to the Moon Garden again because he will soon be 12 years old. Children can't live there once they're 12 years old because they have to learn how to become a grown man or woman. She also tells him that Phyllis is a princess, and that he was really sent there to find the Wonder Box and the Know All Book in order to bring them back to the brown earth again. The guardian says he must first battle a giant and then see an old woman in a red petticoat, who will tell him what to do next. Then while in the Moon House one day, David sees the Moon Angel, and passes behind him.
Now David finds himself on the shore of the sea ten years in the future as a grown man. He goes to the old woman's cottage and learns that Adam and Eve lived in the Moon Garden, where the Moon Angel gave them the Wonder Box. He told them that it held the greatest joy in the world, the Know All Book, but not to open the box because, if they do, sorrow will come upon them. However, a few days later they opened it and end up captives of the Iron Giant in his Iron Castle. In order for David to find the Wonder Box and the Know All Book, he'll have to travel to the Iron Castle too, but he'll have to outsmart the giant in order to succeed. Will David win the battle, and get the Wonder Box and the Know All Book back to the brown earth?
I liked this book because it was very magical and exciting. If I had been David, I would have been sad to leave the Moon Garden, and scared to battle the giant. If you enjoy reading books about magical places, THE GARDEN BEHIND THE MOON is an excellent choice!

A truly profound and beautifully told story

I bought this book for my son after discovering and enjoying Howard Pyle's stories of King Arthur. The Garden Behind the Moon is without question the best children's book I have ever read. It teaches some important concepts in a way that young children can understand: the reason why David cannot remain in the moon garden, how and why David must do the task he was sent to do, how David completes the difficult but necessary transition from little boy to grown man and how he ultimately brings the Know-All book containing its wisdom about the greatest sorrow and greatest joy to earth.

This book along with the Wonder Clock and the King Arthur stories have made my son and I Howard Pyle fans. Today's books for children are disappointing in comparison.

About the Author
Brenda Smith Myles Ph.D., a consultant with the Ziggurat Group, the National Professional Development Center on Autism Spectrum Disorders, and the Education and Treatment Services Project for Military Dependent Children with Autism, was the recipient of the Autism Society of America s Outstanding Professional Award; the Princeton Fellowship Award; and the Council for Exceptional Children, Division on Developmental Disabilities Burton Blatt Humanitarian Award. She has written over 150 articles and books on autism spectrum disorders, including Asperger Syndrome and Difficult Moments: Practical Solutions for Tantrums, Rage, and Meltdowns (with Southwick) and Asperger Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success (with Adreon). The latter was the winner of the Autism Society of America s Outstanding Literary Work. Brenda has made over 500 presentations all over the world, and served as the co-chair of the National ASD Teacher Standards Committee. Myles is also on the executive boards of several organizations, including the Organization for Autism Research and Maap Services Inc. In addition, she was recently acknowledged as the second most productive applied researcher in ASD in the world from 1997 to 2004.

Asperger Syndrome and Sensory Issues (in Children)

Sensory issues are perhaps the most constantly challenging aspect of Asperger's to cope with, because they have the potential to make nearly every aspect of life more stressful and harder to deal with. At the same time, the sensory issues associated with Asperger's can be difficult for those who don't experience them to understand and - particularly in children who may not be able to articulate the problem - reactions to them can easily be misunderstood. Although most people have experience with certain sensory triggers that are uncomfortable or irritating to them (e.g. nails on a chalkboard), why an Asperger individual is, for example, seemingly overreacting for no apparent reason in a quiet classroom room may be unintelligible. Yet, the "quiet" classroom might well include, say, a clock whose every tick causes an individual with noise hypersensitivity acute pain.

This book does a great service to parents and others who deal with children with Asperger's by presenting the associated sensory issues (auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, gustatory, proprioceptive and vestibular) in a clear and easily understandable way. (For a more detailed, academic treatment of sensory issus in the autism spectrum I'd recommend Sensory Perceptual Issues in Autism and Asperger Syndrome: Different Sensory Experiences, Different Perceptual Worlds). It additionally contains a useful summary of different informal and formal assessment tools for sensory issues, as well as an index of behaviors that could be the result of sensory issues and possible interventions to address them. The choice of the individual used for the "case study" at the end was slightly puzzling to me, as this book explicitly address these issues in individuals with Asperger's in particular, while Christopher was never diagnosed with it (rather with PDD-NOS). This is a related condition and therefore sensory issues he dealt with were relevant, but it still struck me as a bit strange. The sporadic cartoons were sometimes a bit goofy, but not to the point of distraction.

Overall this short book is well worth reading to anyone interested in the subject. However, although I applaud its emphasis on the importance of understand and addressing sensory issues (a dimension sometimes neglected), I felt myself wishing there were more to it. The interventions suggested are decidedly oriented toward parents or others dealing with Asperger children in an attempt to change certain behaviors: there is little practical advice given directly for people who deal with sensory issues themselves. Since the book - like so many others on Asperger's - is primarily aimed at people dealing with young children, this is understandable. However, a teenager or adult with Asperger's reading this book to better understand their own sensory issues will not find much in the way of relevant "practical solutions." How can (say) a noise hypersensitive person cope better with noises in an environment there's no way of getting out of, both in respect to the immediate pain and the resulting anxiety?? I, for one, am still looking for a book that address such questions and gives practical advice. (If anyone happens to know of one, please let me know by commenting).

Here are Kate Greenaway-style clothes, high-waisted Empire gowns and visible pantalets, soldier- and sailor-style suits, pinafores, hats and bonnets of every size, kilts and Eton jackets, David Copperfield caps, flounced skirts and bustled skirts, Lord Fauntleroy suits, Buster Brown suits, and many others. A brief author's preface and an introduction by noted Victorian scholar James Laver provides background history of the subject.

I'm a fairly accomplished seamstress, and I've been seized with the desire to develop some authentic period costumes for modern dolls in several sizes. This book is going to be a great help. It is illustrated with clear line drawings from images, portraits, and publications of the 150 years covered. The author has broken the time period down into five-year intervals and provides brief but useful descriptions of fabrics, fashion trends, and accessories such as hats. The book was originally published in 1930, and the author herself has recollections of being dressed in some of the later styles she describes.

I enjoyed my first reading and am looking forward to using the book for the work I want to do.

Interesting read

This book is more a collection stories of duels through history. It has some illustration of various swords and pages with wood cut prints showing duels, armor, weapons etc... It really fills a niche in actual descriptions of combat (typically written in the 3rd person).

There are occasional references in other languages, such as French, which presents difficulty as I don't speak/read/write French. And there is a fair bit of old english writing. These are the only reason I didn't rate this book a 5.

If you are looking for a book with a focus on actual combat vice technique then this is probably what your are looking for.
