Colorful illustrations, many full page, accompany the text, which ends with the what-if effects of global warming. To emphasize that point, Barnard's fascinating offering begins with a heavily dotted world map that denotes significant natural disasters, "just the big ones." Following an overview of the ways natural disasters have influenced history, Barnard takes a closer look at nine of those calamities (and one looming disaster), the effects of which are occasionally still felt today. He begins with information on the meteor that killed the dinosaurs and follows with a discussion of a tsunami that destroyed the Minoan culture, ensuring that the culture of the warlike Mycenaeans would be handed down through the Greeks. The Aksum, sub-Saharan Africa's most important civilization, was ended by a drought. A blizzard paralyzing New York City led to the construction of an all-weather, traffic-proof transit system--underground. Barnard describes these events and more in an absorbing narrative that includes touches of humor. The oversize format allows for full-page paintings that portray the height of the disaster as well as space for maps and smaller pieces of art. Teachers will find many uses for this, but the book is so engaging it will also attract browsers--and hold them. Well done!

I purchased this book for a very advanced reader in grade-school who has a passion for learning about extreme weather and natural disasters. Hurricanes, hail, rain, blizzards -- it's all here, along with a prognosis for the future. He adored this book, and it continues to stimulate his interest in the subject.

The photographs and illustrations are extremely well done, and there is enough here to keep any adult interested. Highly recommended!

Duns Scotus

I was very impressed with this treatment of Duns Scotus. Scotus is certainly one of the most important and revolutionary thinkers during the medieval times, along with Aquinas and William of Ockham. I was most impressed with the essays on Metaethics, virtue theory, mind and body and individuation. Scotus had some powerful ideas that are strongly worth considering.

About the Author
Greg Witt has lived the adventures he writes about and shares with audiences around the world. His journeys have taken him to every corner of the globe. He has guided mountaineering expeditions in the Alps and Andes and paddled wild rivers in the Americas. He has dropped teams of adventurers into golden slot canyons, trudged through deep jungles in Africa, Central America, and Asia, and guided archeological expeditions across the parched Arabian Peninsula. His passion for adventure has always focused on sharing his experience with others
 
Following degrees from the University of California and Brigham Young University, he had an early career in human resources management; but Greg prefers high-adventure to the high-rise, so decades ago he traded his wingtips for hiking boots, and has never looked back.
 
Some weeks, Greg hikes more miles than he drives, which means he wears out his boots faster than he wears out his tires. He has crossed the Grand Canyon on foot many times, climbed Colorado’s three highest peaks in three days, and in a recent summer in the Alps he hiked over 700 miles and gained nearly 100,000 vertical feet of elevation – the equivalent of climbing Everest 9 times.

Just the guide I've been looking for

We recently relocated to Utah from Southern California; we were familiar with all kinds of outdoor hiking activities there. But while we knew there were fantastic hiking adventures to be found here, we just didn't know how to find them. Then we discovered this book.

Most guide books give you just the facts--where and how far. "60 Hikes..." gives you much more: age-appropriateness, difficulty, wildlife, geology, and even history. It's clear that Witt not only knows what he's talking about, he loves it. This enthusiasm is contagious, making you want to jump out of your armchair and explore.

Although we might not make all 60 hikes, we know we'll love the ones we do.

I highly recommend it.

Where Has This Book Been All My Life???

Last Christmas I scoured bookstores for a comprehensive book of hikes for the Salt Lake region, yet all I found were books that were sprinkled with hikes from all over Utah. (Sorry, but we're not driving 8 hours for a 1 hour paved loop.)

Finally! A hiking book that makes sense! All the hikes are within 6o minutes of Salt Lake City, and there's not a lame hike in the bunch. While we haven't done all the hikes (so many trails...so little time), just reading about them made our whole family excited to hit the road with book in hand.

This well-written guide is dripping with details and peppered generously with fantastic photos. Each hike has "key information at-a-glance" (which includes about 15 items that give you a feel for the hike) and a great section at the end of each chapter of "nearby activities".

If you know someone who is planning a trip to Salt Lake (or if they're lucky enough to live there) you've gotta get this book--it's the new "eleventh essential".

I consider myself an avid hiker who knows a lot of hikes around the Salt Lake area. I know a lot of hikes listed in this book, but where it shines is in the layout - hikes are easy to locate in the book, and there is a snapshot on each hike so you can figure out how much exertion it takes. This is a very helpful guide book - and the thing I like is that it included a multitude of hikes from hard to easy and everything in between. I probably have books that covered all of the hikes listed, but this is nice to have all the hikes in one single book from Weber County to Utah county and even some basic Uinta hikes.

Jung and the beginning of Psychological Typology

In reading this book one has the feeling being in on the ground floor. Jung's typology has been one of his most lasting discoveries to the larger world. Every language has introverts,extraverts, thinking and feeling types. The test is used in business,etc. Here we have a correspondence that Jung had with Schmidt- Guisan over a relatively short period of time. The letters themselves become a little repetitive, but one sees the sources where Jung developed his mature ideas on types. The introductions by Ernst Falzeder and John Beebe are worth the price of the book. They are informative, scholarly, and help the reader to get the context in which the two men were writing.

A non-controversial companion

This is an anthology about Hans Urs von Balthasar, the controversial Catholic theologian who died in 1988. The anthology deals almost exclusively with Balthasar's theology, and is therefore of primary interest to serious students of theology, especially modern Catholic theology, and perhaps philosophy. The book says very little about Balthasar's life, curiously, since the alliances and controversies he was involved in surely had a bearing on his ideas and their reception. Balthasar cooperated with Josef Ratzinger (the future pope Benedict XVI) after Vatican II, since both of them wanted a conservative interpretation of the decisions taken at the council. Later, Balthasar was involved in a controversy with conservative Catholics, who accused him of denying the existence of Hell. The controversy was...well, heated. In passing, the anthology also mentions Balthasar's dependence on the female Catholic mystic Adrienne von Speyr. Yet, there is no further information about this. Since the anthology is quite extensive, this feels like a major short-coming. Nor does the book say anything about Balthasar writing the introduction to an occult book by Valentin Tomberg.

I sometimes get the impression, that Balthasar is simply too hot to handle!

Still, "The Cambridge Companion" is interesting. The articles deal with Balthasar's Christhology, metaphysics, eschatology, Biblical interpretation, and his views on Mary, the saints and the eucharist. His major theological writings are reviewed, and there are also pieces on his patristic scholarship and literary criticism. His theological and philosophical encounters with Karl Barth, Karl Rahner and Martin Heidegger are mentioned. There is also a critical text on his hopelessly patriarchal view of Woman.

Balthasar's ideas on the Trinity, the nature of Being and the theological aesthetics are particularly interesting, but too subtle to do justice in a customer review!

When all is said and done, I give this (all too non-controversialist) anthology four stars.

Von Balthasar is the poster-boy for orthodox Catholicism nowadays. This is the most comprehensive collection of critical reflections on Balthasar's works you're liable to find. A beautiful, dharmic and profound book.

Sharon Salzberg has written a beautiful and profound book about practicing the dharma, living the dharma, and spreading the dharma. She relates wonderful stories of her own experiences, many involving the great spiritual teachers of our day. I was continuously inspired by her writing. I highly recommend this book for anyone who'd like to have an inspiring spiritual book around the house. The best part of the book is that it is written in 1-2 page chapters, each one an immediate hit of pure dharma. So, I can just flip the book open, have a quick read, and come away very happy. A great book, indeed!

Worth Re-Reading

I read this about a year ago when I first started meditating seriously, and I picked it up again a little while ago -- it's as if the book changed since I last read it. So much more of it resonates with me now, and I'm glad I bought it rather than just checking out from a library. What's very nice about the book is that it's written in nice little essay form -- like little talks -- and one can read them in a few minutes before bed and then sleep nicely thinking -- or perhaps NOT thinking! -- about them.

Worth reading again and again

Sharon Salzberg is such a capable, warm, and inspiring voice for Western Buddhism. This work beautifully weaves together Buddhist philosophy and practice, reality and practicality, compassion and joy. She fleshes out concepts of meditation and mindfulness using her own experiences, often amusing, without drawing attention to herself. Rather, she is a skilled teacher who guides the student on his/her own journey.
Whether Buddhist or not, beginner mind or monk, most readers will celebrate this work.

Today's antitrust professionals disagree on specific practices and rules, but most litigators, prosecutors, judges, and scholars agree that the primary goal of antitrust laws should be to promote economic welfare, and that economic theory should be used to determine how well business practices conform to that goal.

In this extensively revised edition, Posner explains the economic approach to new generations of lawyers and students. He updates and amplifies his approach as it applies to the developments, both legal and economic, in the antitrust field since 1976. The "new economy," for example, has presented a host of difficult antitrust questions, and a new chapter explains how the economic approach can be applied to it.

About the Author
Richard A. Posner is a judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and a senior lecturer in law at the University of Chicago Law School. His many books on the application of economics to law include Economic Analysis of Law, now in its fifth edition.

everything is in there, but take it with a grain of salt.

If I had to suggest the purchase of this book I would recommend it. There is almost everything in the book about US antitrust. But some warnings are necessary. It's not for students. It's not for lawyers. Maybe scholars and judges can be interested. The author highlights what is not coherent in the body of untistrust legislation. He provides some solution but that solution turns out to be simple: stay put. On that we can debate, but for sure it's a useful check in the bugs of the system. Given the approach I would have given 5 stars if the author had provided some hints or quantitative analysis to the reader on the effects of some of the Supreme Court decisions on lower Courts and on the current management of antitrust law.

For those of us trying to make sense of the world and the institutions we devise to cope with it, John Dewey's Reconstruction in Philosophy offers tremendous insight. Writing a few years after World War I, the highly regarded American philosopher chose to embrace the modern sense of scientific optimism and apply it to the search for truth. He argued forcefully that our philosophical constructions are not based in reason, but only use higher thinking to justify themselves, and that we might find better ways of living if we examine our deepest beliefs and feelings with an eye toward their ultimate effects on us and others. This experimental philosophy, pragmatism, took several steps beyond the previous century's utilitarianism and was both hailed and reviled as a subsumption of philosophy and ethics into science.

Written as lectures, Reconstruction in Philosophy is marginally less dry than other philosophical tracts, but for readers new to the jargon, some sections can be slow-going. The pleasure of Dewey's works, though, comes from the intellectual stimulation of following a brilliant mind into then-uncharted epistemological territory. The last chapter, "Reconstruction As Affecting Social Philosophy," foreshadows so much 20th-century political thinking--from across the spectrum--that it ought to be required reading in high school civics classes. An important criticism of western philosophical traditions.

John Dewey's "Reconstruction of Philosophy" is a work of enormous importance in its analysis of the origins and development of the western philosophical tradition. Dewey takes an instrumentalist approach to the problem of how human experience can give rise to its imaginative reconstruction in memory. It is, Dewey says, in this realm of memory and imagination that ritual, religion, and ultimately, philosophy develop. Further, he relates the classical and medieval world views--still remarkably influential in the modern world--to the structure of classical society. Dewey provides the reader with a challenging exposition of the sources of many weaknesses and flaws in western philosophy and suggests remedies for them.
Some readers may find Dewey's prose awkward and occasionally difficult, but for those interested in a history of philosophy which is more than a chronological recounting of philosophical systems, "Reconstruction" is well worth the effort.

Essential to understanding pragmatism and instrumentalism.

John Dewey, as I've heard, was never comfortable with labels. Throughout his career he shifted from and to many rubrics: pragmatism, interactionism, instrumentalism, transactionism, experimentalism. Truth be told, all of these are present in "Reconstruction in Philosophy" and partly because of that, this is probably the best intro to Dewey available.
Dewy has a bone to pick with traditional philosophy. Not only has it lost track with real, as opposed to academic, problems (anyone walking down the street can tell us this) but it never really was that good at depicting real questions and descriptions anyway. Take comcepts like Plato's ideal forms and Kant's a priori. Neither of these are teneble in any realm of experience; rather, they were a misguided quest to explain the permanance and stability of the world.
Dewey's book is an attempt to pull the carpet out from under their feet; science and inquiry using its methods shows us that the world changes and if anything, stability is something that is felt by us - not inherent in the world. Thus a prioris, ideal forms, seperation of the noumenal and phenouminal amongst other current 'problems' in philosophy - all based on the idea of permanant/transitory dichotomy - are not only wearing thin, but are fast showing to be irrelevant. From this, he builds the groundwork of a philosophy in between rationalism and empiricism. Taking from rationalism an admiration and recognition of reason's power to direct action and combining it with empiricims fascination with experience, Dewey creates a philosophy that puts the spotlight not on one or the other, but on both as leading to and taking from eachother.
The first chapter are a philosophical survey of how philosophy went wrong; particularly in Ancient Greek and early Christian philosophy (both having a love affair with absolutes outside of experience). The second chapter focuses on the mistakes when philosophers, like Francis Bacon, widened the chasm between the real and experiential and the ideal and rational.
From here, Dewey proceeds piece by piece to show what was wrong and how to fix it by making clear tht scienctific inquiry (the equal interaction between subject and object) leaves no room for absolutes, forms or a prioris (or at least, not in any pragmatically useful sense). By extension, things like formal rules of logic above experience, non-experimentalism in moral or political theory and psychology that includes the individual without an equal part of the social; all of these become little more than unfounded but continually persisting glorifications.
For the reader interested in Dewey, naturalism, instrumentalism or the implications of pragmatism, this is a great introduction. From here, I suggest Dewey's "The Quest for Certainty" followed by "Experience and Nature", topped off with "Human Nature and Conduct".

A must for any student in philosophy

Reconstruction in Philosophy presents a program for just that: a radical re-building of western philosophy. Dewey criticizes the current state of affairs as being tied to the past in ways that are no longer relevent to the current world. He traces the creation of various social institutions, then shows how these actions of ancient times, such as creation of ancient philosophical traditions (such as the idea of a split between "higher" and "lower" reality cf. Plato), which although useful in their time, now [slows] intellectual progress. Dewey puts forth the argument that much of modern philosophy (and human thought in general) is concerned with the same problems that the ancients were concerned with, although those problems are no longer relevent. Rather, philosophy should concern itself with current issues of social, economic, or political importance, and ask what can be done to improve them? Dewey's method is concerned with concrete solutions to concrete problems. Rather than over-broad generalizations about "the State" or "Life", we must ask think of answers to problems concerning this individual state, or that individual person. Likewise, he advocates dropping the notion of the Universal having more importance than the Particular; doing so, he claims, leads to intellectual laziness, and a denial that problems exist (extreme optimism). Rather, human intelligence must be focused on particular problems, with an eye towards improving that particular situation.
This often-overlooked book is the perfect antidote to the image of the philosopher as an out-of-touch abstract intellectual,

About the Author
G. Ruth Kukiela Bork, M.Ed., is dean and director of the Disability Resource Center, Northeastern University. Dean Bork's professional involvement in disability affairs and advocacy spans 34 years. She is a founding member of the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). Dean Bork has written and spoken on a wide range of disability-related topics. Jane Thierfeld Brown, Ed.D., is director of Student Services at the University of Connecticut School of Law. She has worked in Disability Services for 27 years. She consults at many higher education institutions and is a frequent keynote speaker at conferences on Asperger Syndrome. Lorraine Wolf, Ph.D., is director of Disability Services at Boston University, where she also holds faculty appointments in psychiatry and rehabilitation sciences. With over 20 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders, Dr. Wolf has published and presented extensively on issues related to students with attention and learning disorders, psychiatric disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders.

Essential reading for all who work with, or love, a college student with Asperger's

I began reading books on Asperger's Syndrome 9 years ago, when my son was diagnosed with the condition. The books on the subject were few then, but now are many. As college now looms on the horizon for my son, I've recently read several books on how to help a student with AS succeed in college. This is, bar none, THE best book on that subject that I have read. It is written by three credentialed and experienced educators: (1) the director of disability services for Boston University (she has a Ph.D.); (2) the director of student services at the University of Connecticut School of Law (she has an Ed.D.); and (3) a dean who is also the director of the disability resource center for Northeastern University (she has an M.Ed.). My first clue that this would be a practical yet scientifically accurate book was that the foreward was written by Fred Volkmar, M.D., and Ami Klin, Ph.D., both of Yale Child Study Center. Drs. Volkmar and Klin are two world-renowned experts on Asperger's Syndrome and both work in a university setting. If they vouch for you, you are golden!

The book is stunningly accurate in its portrayal of the strengths and the everyday challenges of college students with Asperger's. The authors clearly have all worked closely with many individuals with Asperger's Syndrome. They recognize that, while the expression of AS is different for each person, there are common areas of difficulty with which students will likely need support. Although they write primarily for those who work in college disability services offices and therefore take that perspective, the authors also empathize with the student and his/her parents. For example, while they stress the critical need for college students with AS to separate from their parents and become independent, the authors also respectfully acknowledge that parents of students with AS who have been stereotypical "helicopter parents" or "commando parents" have often been that way because they have had to advocate vigorously over the years to ensure that their children were provided the services and accommodations they needed and to which they were entitled under the law.

The book covers a broad range of big and small issues: life in the classroom; student self-advocacy with professors; dorm life (single room? roommates?); sleep difficulties common to those with AS; sensory issues; personal hygiene; student safety; doing laundry; grocery shopping; medication issues; coordinating with health care professionals and others; legal restrictions on the types of information colleges may share with parents; and more.

You will find yourself reading with highlighter in hand because the book contains such sage advice. We parents of children with AS probably started our "AS home library" with Dr. Tony Attwood's book on Asperger's. As our child now heads off to college, this book is a worthy one to place on the bookshelf next to his book.

very informative for parents as well as college personnel

I had heard all 3 of the authors speak at a Yale conference and they were very informative, so I bought the book even though the title says it's a guide for college personnel and I'm the mother of a student with Asperger's. Helpful info about possible accommodations; what constitute unreasonable parental requests; the relationship between the student, family and college disability service department; role playing and scripting to prepare student to recent accommodations from a professor; and using the college career services to help with resume preparation and interview skills. And lots of food for thought, e.g. the students frequently don't want others in their dorm to know about their disability.

The face of the post secondary student is changing, and this book gives essential information and advice to college personnel as well as parents and students. This is a good launching pad for what is possible/should be expected at the current time, and likely for the next few years for students with autism seeking a degree from a post secondary institution.
