Letters from an American Farmer (Dover Books on History, Political and Social Science), by J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur

An emigrant French aristocrat-turned-farmer, Jean de Crèvecoeur was granted New York citizenship in 1765 and became a landowner in Orange County. There, he wrote about his farming experiences and interpreted the nation's development in a series of charming and keenly observant essay-length letters about life in the Early Republic.
A Baedeker of American culture for Old World readers, the book painted a vivid portrait of the young country, not only detailing seafaring life in New England and plantation culture in the South, but also providing incisive vignettes of the hardships of frontier living and the perilous unrest that existed between fanatical patriots and back-country loyalists. For many Europeans, his essays offered first major impressions of American landscapes, people, institutions, and the problems that stood in the way of making one nation out of diverse former colonies.
One of the best-known early accounts of life in eighteenth-century America, Letters from an American Farmer is essential reading for students of colonial history and a must-have for Americana enthusiasts.

A French Aristocrat in American Farmer's Clothing
By Owl
J. Hector St.John de Crevecoeur was an American farmer like Audubon was a fella who painted some birds. He was born in France in 1739, an aristocrat, educated thoroughly by Jesuits, travelled first to England and then to New France, joining Montcalm. After Quebec fell, the young soldier, now using St. John as his surname, entered the British colonies. In 1769, he wed the happily named Mehitable Tippett, with whom he eventually had three children. He bought farmland, cleared and planted, became a plant-finder for Philadelphia botanist John Bertram, turned his hand to business, waxed prosperously & uxuriously until he found himself so out of sympathy with the revolutionary spirit, he had to flee this country.

Back in France---and improbable as the tale may be, 'tis true---St. John came under the wings of the charming ex-mistress of Rousseau, the Dear Friend also of Benjamin Franklin, and a Very Dear Friend of his own father, Madame D'Houdetot. This kind lady obtained an Ambassadorship to New York for her protégée. Time and political tides tossed him about between countries. He died in France in 1813, leaving progeny & grand-progeny in the United States and a legacy to us of stories, history, adventures, and opinions, from a keen observer with a brilliant quill and considerable experience.

These splendid letters are addressed to his friend in France, one Abbe Reynal, who was conveniently interested in all things American. There are twelve letters: On the situation, feelings, and pleasures of an American farmer, What is an American, Description of the Island of Nantucket, Education & employment of inhabitants of Nantucket, Description of Martha's Vineyard and the whale fishery, manner and customs of Nantucket, Peculiar customs at Nantucket, Description of Charles-town and thoughts on slavery, On snakes and on the humming bird, Description of a visit from a Russian gentlemen to John Bertram (not to be missed for gardeners!), and the Distresses of a frontier man.

This "American farmer" was cultivated and well-bred. His letters are wide in their range of topics, forthright in their observations, inclined to philosophizing, and St. John was perhaps not adverse to heightening the excitement now and again as in his story of a fight to the death (eventually by drowning) between two large serpents. Here, at random, are a few sections:

"Pray, what is the reason that the Scots are in general more religious, more faithful, more honest, and industrious than the Irish? I do not mean to insinuate national reflections, God fobid! It ill becomes any man, and much less an American; but as I know men are nothing of themselves..."

"A singular custom prevails here [in Nantucket] among the women. They have adopted these many years the Asiatic custom of taking a dose of opi*m every morning and so deeply rooted is it, that they would be at a loss how to live without this indulgence..."

The first edition of the letters came out in 1782, followed quickly by a second edition. Admired by Franklin and Jefferson, they become popular indeed, so filled were they with incident, so packed with stories of people and their customs, and so humane. The 2005 Dover edition is a treasure-house of the restored letters, offering also a fine biographical essay on St. John, and end notes that are themselves delights in bringing to new life the early days of the United States as well as some people readers can be happy to meet.

Here, for instance, is the good Madame D'Houdetot as seen in 1805 by her acquaintance, Madame De Remusat, writing from Samoa:

" I am convinced that her society would be dangerous to a woman of weak character, or to one whose life was not happy...She is so peaceful, so happy, so free from anxiety about the next life. It would seem she trusts to the words of the Gospel: Her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved so much."

J. Hector St. John De Crevecoeur, too, was surely a great lover of life and of the natural wonders of America. His sins, if any, are probably forgiven, although his wife's death in America after he fled to France, is sadeading.

His Letters are highly recommended for readers who enjoy the length & eloquence of 18th century writing and stories from this often difficult, yet mostly brave new world.

It arrived on time. My daughter needed it for her college classes and she waited to the last minute. Could not find it in any of the book stores. Off to college with her books.
