An Excellent first book

Hopper's book is one of-if not the-best available for the player who wants to become" a pretty good" player. It contains basic information about the the game that will take you a step above the average player. For example ,there are several common techniques for pulling off two for one and two for three jumps. After finishing the book--and practicing a little-- you will be a better player and have a better understanding of this much misunderstood game. It's a rare book: good and cheap

Beginners should read the best first

Millard Hopper's "Win at Checkers" is a good book if not a great one. There are far more useful books for the rank beginner. As one of those rank beginners I consulted an excellent resource, Mr. Bob Newell of Checker Maven, who suggested the other books listed here. I have since devoured the four books and rank them in order from most to least useful and also in the order they should be read.

Best to least:

"Starting Out in Checkers" by Richard Pask
"Checkers Made Easy" by Arthur Reisman
"How to Win at Checkers" by Fred Reinfeld
"Win at Checkers" by Millard Hopper

Order to be read:

"Checkers Made Easy" by Arthur Reisman
"Starting Out in Checkers" by Richard Pask
"How to Win at Checkers" by Fred Reinfeld

This is not to say that "Win at Checkers" is without merit, but for the beginner Mr. Hopper's approach is neither as methodical nor as comprehensive as the others. In these respects, Richard Pask's book excels and that's why I rank it first. Good work, Mr. Pask! Unfortunately, you may have a difficult time finding a new copy at a reasonable price. It originally sold for $12.95 and now even used copies are going for around $15 minimum, plus shipping. That said, get it; you won't be sorry.

For the fundamental patterns of the game it is best to start with Arthur Reisman's "Checkers Made Easy." I enjoyed Mr. Reisman's writing style and his clever names for the various strategic maneuvers and tactical shots that comprise the elements of the game. This can also be said of names given in Mr. Pask's book. It makes learning enjoyable as well as memorable. Good news! Mr. Reisman's book is available as a free download at Mr. Newell's Checker Maven.

Of course, not all is peaches and cream with these two works. "Checkers Made Easy" only tangentially touches upon the opening phase of the game in covering the Dyke formation and the Bridge. Mr. Pask's book is no better. There is so little about the opening in "Starting Out in Checkers" that this chapter could have been left out without too much notice. This is where Fred Reinfeld's "How to Win at Checkers" comes into its own.

"How to Win at Checkers" is a useful if not error free overview of what was covered in Mr. Reisman's and Mr. Pask's books, but the heart of this work is its introduction to the major openings in Chapter 4 and traps to be found in those openings for the unwary in Chapter 3. The beginner familiar with the previously mentioned works will find these two chapters the most useful.

Lastly, there is Mr. Hopper's "Win at Checkers" containing a little bit of this and a little bit of that: general principles, shots and traps, standard openings, opening traps (called Blitzkriegs here), exercises and very little on the endgame. It also includes a brief list of match and tournament scores from 1948 to 1955. Written in a question and answer format, it is a good refresher after the other three books have been digested.

Where to go from here?

I'd suggest Mr. Pask's advanced treatise titled "Play Better Checkers and Draughts." It is available for purchase as a PDF from Bob Newell for a mere $10.

Collections and matches are great for understanding a game's progress from opening to endgame. Just two are "Checker Kings in Action" by Wiswell and Hopper and Alex Moiseyev's "Sixth," the latter being available for purchase from The American Checker Federation's online store.

Lastly, "Basic Checkers: The First Twenty Moves" is a comprehensive opening guide and an invaluable resource for the serious player. Comparable to the "Encyclopedia of Chess Openings" for those familiar with chess, it is far from basic and not really for beginners. Originally self-published in seven parts from 1978 to 1983 by Richard L. Fortman, the book required hundreds of hours of work by editor-in-chief Bob Newell and co-editor Jim Loy to bring it up to date for the 2010 edition. You can purchased it from Amazon or from CreateSpace.

No Longer Dog Meat!

I began playing checkers at YAHOO a few months ago. Got killed. When I was a young boy (48 now) I remember getting beat at checkers by my older sisters to the point where I would get so angry that I'd throw the board across the room during the game. And so, once again I was getting stomped by 15 year old Austrailians. I read this book. And re-read it. And studied it. Now I WIN most of the time. It's a very fast way to become a good intermediate player. Buy it!

Beneath the surface of life Olds discovers "what all of us want never to know"her own sexuality. Her obsessive descriptions of sex are too candid to be erotic: "the condom/ripped and the seed tore into me like a/ flame." With evocative imagery ("We think about bones twisted like white/ saplings"), Olds searches through "all the eloquence of the body" for the means to assess her roles as daughter, lover, wife, mother, and woman. Despite a too-easy solipsism ("I looked at you and I tell you I knew you were God/ and I was God"), the best poetry occurs when Olds presents moments of awakening as though they had just happenedher baby's arms "bent like a crab's rosy legs, the/ thighs closely-packed plums in heavy syrup." About the Author
Sharon Olds was born in 1942, in San Francisco, and educated at Stanford University and Columbia University. Her first book of poems, Satan Says (1980), received the inaugural San Francisco Poetry Center Award. Her second, The Dead and the Living, was both the Lamont Poetry Selection for 1983 and winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. She teaches poetry workshops in the Graduate Creative Writing Program at New York University and in the N.Y.U. workshop program at Goldwater Hospital on Roosevelt Island in New York. More recently she was awarded the Walt Whitman Citation for Merit by the New York State Writers Institute of the State University of New York. The citation officially invested her with the title of New York State Poet for 1998-2000.

An Exhilarating Read, But Not For Everyone. . .

Sharon Olds delves deeply into the heart of what it means to be human in her collection of poems, "The Gold Cell." I am continually amazed as to how she deals with taboo subjects, such as sex, religion, and morality, with direct and shockingly vivid language. In this particular collection of poems, Olds uses the image of blood to represent various motifs; the blood between family ties, its relation to sex and the body, and even the patriotic sense and the "Americaness" of blood. Using this single word, Olds is able to create an infinite number of images and meanings that go far beyond the common notion that blood is what supplies the body with life. This is by far one of the most influential books of poetry that I have encountered in my career. I do not recommend it to those who are squimish or who are prone to heart-failure at the mention of the word "sex" or "penis." While most of her poems are alluring and evocative, many will shock you with their unabashed treatment of sensitive subjects. For those of you who wish to divulge into the mind of what it means to be human, I whole-heartedly recommend this collection of poetry. Olds' poems not only examine what it means to be human but what it means to be moral beings. Prepare for a journey that will reveal the emotional and raw psychology of the human mind.

Visceral, haunting imagery

As in her other volumes of poetry, Olds is a masterful documenter of the flesh. No living American poet writes as authentically about the body as she does -- the exquisite descriptions of sexuality (First Sex is particularly good), motherhood, and aging are not easily forgotten. In my favorite, California Swimming Pool, she captures adolescence so succinctly and alluringly that my own experience of 13 came rocketing back into my consciousness with an intensity which shocked me. Of all her volumes of poetry, this is my favorite.

Emily Dickinson once said something to the extent of, that when she felt that the top of her head had been taken off, she knew that was true poetry. That's how I felt while reading The Gold Cell, and I assure you, that's a great thing. This is an incredibly powerful read and well worth your time.

Lars-Åke Janzon is a biologist at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. He enjoys research in the lab and in the field, where he often helps students identify their natural finds. He has made numerous television and radio appearances in Sweden to discuss biology and nature, and has published many articles on his findings.

The Jewish War is remarkable for many reasons. It is political and religious satire of the highest order. It is also a vigorous and at times moving story peopled with fallible, complicated, entirely credible characters. And, perhaps most impressive, it displays an unerring control of tone, moving from the high comedy of a summer camp in the Catskills in the early 1960s to a grand, dramatic conclusion in the ancient city of Hebron in the late 1990s. The tone darkens as the story advances, but the early absurdity and comic exhilaration never quite disappear. Portrait of spiritual futility

The other reviewers' notes on this book's humor notwithstanding, do not expect to laugh out loud, IMHO. Although Reich valiantly attempts to convey an important story through humor, her approach ultimately fails to make good on the best outcome of humor: to take us out of our limited perspectives and connect us to deeper meaning. The book does convey the deep emptiness of fundamentalist thinking and its spiritual depletion. Unfortunately, unless you can follow Reich's path closely, the novel itself has that feel by the end, not having created any larger framework of meaning around the profound futility of what is described.

An Israeli Looks at the Ultra-Ultra Orthodox Movement to the West Bank

For those who don't know, there are two types of 'ultra'orthodox, those that do not believe in the existence of Israel, and those that believe in the Kingdom of Israel that includes the west bank (Judea and Samaria). Both exist in big helpings in this book. In fact the only sane people are the Israeli Sabras who with everyone, including the Arabs, would shut up and go on with life.

The reason I gave this book three stars is that it has four parts and the first three are great. They are a funny, irreverent, and satiric comment modern day religious extremism. Jerry Goldberg is a messianic orthodox jew who metamorphosis from Bronx social worker and Catskills camp counselor into Yehudi HaGoel, terrorist and polygamous leader of a band of American Jewish zealots who establish a short-lived secessionist Kingdom of Judea and Samaria based at Hebron on Israel's West Bank.

Joining Jerry/Yehudi in this doomed quest are his three wives (a Barnard-educated English literature scholar, a mail-order swindler and a conflicted divorcee); Jerry's trusted comrade, Herbie Levy (Hoshea HaLevi) of Brooklyn; and fellow Uzi-toting fanatics willing to die for their cause. Swinging from broad farce to tragic confrontation. Also along is the Reverand Charles 'Chuck' Buck, fast-talking evangelical preacher who joins forces with Yehudi to further his goal of building a Christian theme park on Jerusalem's Temple Mount.

Buck's sister Pam, has converted to judaism; to swell the ranks of The Messiah-Waiters, an ultraorthodox, anti-Zionist movement, she kidnaps boys. She is pursued by an old Arab sheikh (the spiritual brother of her blessedly passed on husband), Abu Salman, who's obeying a vision to marry her in order to produce a child.

The Jewish War which starts out as a comic vision of how the orthodox spend their summers in the Catskills, to an overly dramatic conclusion in the ancient city of Hebron. As the story advances, early absurdity and comic exhilaration begin to disappear. At the end, we are left with the absurdity alone, which is a poor foundation for a reasonble ending.

Dispiriting

I loved The Master of the Return (which I review here as 'blond omnivore' and more fully on amazon.co.uk, mysteriously as 'a customer') but that addressed human absurdity Candide-style; here, in an all too real situation, the burlesque grows wearisome, the religiosity suffocating and the absurdity toxic; 'she can call herself a leper...if...she likes, but the main question is, What kind of leper is she? I mean, is she a Moslem leper, a Christian leper, a Jewish leper, or what?' In the vexed question of the Land of Israel not even black humour will serve any longer.

PS and the fact that the Pope is visiting the UK right now didn't help any either! But I have hopes of My Holocaust (if that is the right way of putting it...)

This book is for students and readers with some mathematical background, but not much. It offers a quick introduction to the fundamental concepts and tools of probability. It doesn't cover many applications, but that is covered instead in other books; some of which are also in the Dover series.
Practical uses of probability include: Testing of data set, sampling, insurance topics, quality checking, finance, investment, and finance, to mention only a few. Heathcote's book is not intimidating; just 265 pages. It has exercises, useful in the classroom or in self-study. They are well chosen and help the novice assimilating the theory and turning practical problems into numbers. It begins with events, probability space, combination of events using the mathematical notions of union and intersection, sigma algebras, random variables; then it turns to tools from analysis, Bayes' theorem, distributions, convergence theorems. The book offers a quick entry into computations with probability, and it concludes with the law(s) of large numbers, and Markov chains. It is a nice supplement to for example Rozanov's little book Probability Theory, also in the Dover series.

Concise introduction to the mathematical theory of probabili

Heathcote is a nice little introduction to mathematical probability theory. It is an introduction in the sense that it does not assume familiarity with probability theory. It develops the subject without relying on measure theory or Lebesgue integration, topics which are perhaps too advanced for an introductory text. For more advanced treatments consult, for example, Shiryaev. The notation and typesetting is clear and clean throughout. Applied examples are scarse, with applications being reserved mainly for the problem sets. Overall this is a good book for the student interested in learning some of the deeper mathematics underlying probability.

Excellent simple arrangements of Chopin pieces. There is a considerable range in difficulty from the beginning of the book to the end. I wish some of the arrangements were a little longer.

The pieces are indeed arranged in a simple manner. Chopin would be much too difficult otherwise. I like how this book encourages confidence as it doesn't say "A first book of..." and proves to be too hard.

Knotcraft: Excellent older text General knots, tricks, games.

Dover has re-issued this text corrected and unabridged from a 1983 book with a similar title. One correction they still need; under the Fishing section the so called "Turtle Knot" should be called the Turle Knot. It was popularized by Major William Greer Turle in the early 19th century.

This is a clearly (black & White) illustrated knot book that is an excellent transitional book between the older knot books (Clifford Ashley's and others prior to 1950) and the modern books with some of the newer knots such as the Hunter' s Bend, Vice-Versa Bend and Icicle Hitch. It has several knots I have not seen before. The above mentioned Turle being one, and the interlaced knot on the cover from George Washington's sword being another. It also shows the famed Diamond Hitch used on packsaddles for horses and mules. (Zane Grey mentions it in his westerns, but not how to tie it.)

This book is also very strong on knot tricks and games. Not very strong on decorative knots such as Turk's Head knots, gaucho knots, star knots and so forth. A very fine General knot book for beginner and intermediate knotting with particular appeal for scouting or campers of any ages.

David Adam's books are very "Reader Friendly", beautifully written, factual, warm and filled with fascinating anecdotes that will keep you engrossed throughout. Once you finish you will want to read another. Don't pass this one by!

I used this excellent introduction to the island and its history to prepare pilgrims for a day on Lindisfarne. It was just what we needed. Good source for an overview of both the religious significance and the life of the villagers over the centuries.

Classic Comedy of Manners - Restoration Period

The first three acts of William Congreve's play, The Way of the World (1700), involve little action. The scenes focus on introducing and contrasting characters, highlighting witty dialogue, and slowly revealing details of prior events through casual references. Polite, formalized language disguises selfish motives, rivalries, deceit, and deviousness.

Selfish motives, deciet, and other negative attributes may not seem a proper basis for comedy, and yet The Way of the World warrants four stars. For comparison purposes I strongly recommend reading two other Restoration period comedies: Wycherley's The Country Wife (1675) and Etherege's The Man of Mode (1676). All three plays share a cynical view of the sanctity of marriage and portray a self-centered London society obsessed with extramarital affairs.

The action (certain steps to overcome obstacles to a marriage) in The Way of the World does not occur until the later acts. The marriage between Mirabell and Millamant proceeds only after both are assured that their financial situation will not be jeopardized. Love is secondary. Similarly, the unpleasant situation of Mrs. Fainall - a marriage without any pretence of love - remains unchanged.

While humor may be somewhat sparse in the earlier acts, the tempo clearly picks up in acts four and five. The plot becomes extremely fluid when Mirabell's inventive fraud unravels, and his rival, Mr. Fainall, gains the upper hand. However, the last act offers a delightful twist that puts things right. (Puts things right might be an overstatement given that the play's key characters are somewhat lacking in scruples.)

Although The Way of the World is only occasionally staged today, this play is often assigned reading. My favorite edition is Barron's Educational Series (1958) as it provides plentiful stage directions. In particular, indications of expression - essentially guidance to actors on the proper delivery of the dialogue - are inserted as the dialogue switches from one character to another. Examples include: "somewhat sourly recollecting the rebuff of the previous evening", "using frankness as a bait to draw equal frankness from her companion", and "too preoccupied to pay serious attention". The Barron's edition also has a lengthy introduction by Vincent Hopper and Gerald Lahey, a 5-page note on staging by George Hersey, and illustrations by Fritz Kredel.

A Crofts Classic edition (published 1951, reprinted 1985) provides a useful section titled The Argument of the Play, in which the editor, Henry T. E. Perry, summarizes events that occurred prior to the beginning of the play. (Remember that the dialogue in the early acts slowly - and often obliquely - reveals details of prior events through casual references.) Perry also discusses how William Congreve adroitly used dialogue to reveal much about the personalities of his characters.

The Way of the World can also be found in the Norton Critical Edition (1973) titled Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Comedy. The extensive appendix includes an 80-page section titled Criticism From Lamb to the Present; two articles directly address Congreve's play: The Way of the World by Norman Holland and Form and Wit in The Way of the World by Martin Price.

One of the greatest plays of all time

"The Way of the World" is a true masterpiece of wit and social commentary. It anticipates later works by such masters of dialogue as Oscar Wilde. I read this play in a course on restoration and 18th century drama that I took in graduate school and it was by far among my favorite plays that semester. Those who complain that it is too complex (and then contradict themselves by calling it a mere soap opera) clearly do not appreciate the subtlety and multiple layers of Congreve's genius. While yes, some characters are one dimensional, the main characters are multi-layered and complex. Case in point - Mirabel, the male protagonist, clearly loves Millamant but has mercenary ambitions as well. He also has an implied rakish past, which led to the extremely unhappy marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Fainall (though he endeavors to come to Mrs. Fainall's aid during the course of the play). Certainly many of the characters are stereotypes, but that in itself is interesting and highly comical. The dialogue is absolutely brilliant, among the best I've seen. I highly recommend giving this play the time and attention it deserves - "The Way of the World" is highly rewarding entertainment.

I had to write a review after reading the two preceeding mine!
This is perhaps the most brilliant of the late Restoration comedies. For all of those unfamiliar with Restoration drama, it is a rich, witty genre which has been too often neglected in American educational institutions, relegated to the "secondary canon" of English lit. The Way of the World is ridiculously sublime, incorporating the tropes of the genre, but exceeding its predecessors.
