Country Houses and Seaside Cottages of the Victorian Era (Dover Architecture), by William T. Comstock

This fascinating book presents a series of 44 designs for vacation homes of varying styles and sizes, created over a century ago by a select group of New York and New Jersey architects. Many of them are two-story, and most were intended to be built on low-to-medium budgets. All of them reflect the ideals of comfort and charm and state-of-the-art technology of the Victorian period.
The original publishers compiled a splendid variety of designs, presented them as "seaside and country houses" and included designs for a Victorian club house, pavilion, school house, and a "small seaside chapel." A total of 200 illustrations — including perspective views, front and side elevations, and first- and second-story floor plans — depict these appealing designs. Occasionally the architects have specified construction materials and finishing details such as paint, color, and trim, and in all cases they have included the overall anticipated costs, which range from about $500 to about $9,000.
The Victorians, of course, loved architectural embellishments of every kind, and it is no small part of the charm of this book to study the profusion of gables, porches, portholes, dormers, porticoes, chimneys, pinnacles, and more, lavished on even the most modest designs. Above all, the houses and cottages appear to be both comfortable and reassuring, appealing reminders of a gracious age long gone. Those studying and working in the fields of architecture, history, and sociology will find in this wonderful book exuberant examples of a rich and charming architectural style. Those who wish to join the growing number of home builders and restorers re-creating Victorian homes will find inspiration in each of these thoughtful designs.

Another great resource from Dover
By Chrijeff
Though these houses purport to be "country houses and seaside cottages," there's little reason they couldn't have been built in any Victorian small town. They range from a tiny three-room structure to a rambling 10-bedroom Dutch Gambrel mansion (called in those days a "villa") to a "club house" (easily altered to private use), a lakeside pavilion, a Baptist chapel, a "stone rectory in Iowa," and a couple of apartment blocks, one of which eerily reminds me of a building not far from my former home. These buildings are primarily of the Eastlake or Queen Anne style, the original book having appeared in 1883, an era when the front stair-hall was often as big as any other room and used as such. You'll need a magnifier to make out some of the details, but if you have any interest at all in late-Victorian domestic architecture, you need to have this volume on your shelves.

Is a great visually informative book. It gives the reader a better idea of the way homes were built in the late 19th century. The book covers a wide variety of victorian styles and includes plans, perspective views and elevations from a small 4 room cottage, to a huge 36+ room mansion in the Caribbean. I recomend this book to anybody interested in late 19th century victorian architecture.

This informative, useful field guide reveals the amazing biodiversity within city and suburban landscapes, including trees, insects and other invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The author explains why these organisms live in cities and how they survive, offers tips on which species to look for, and shares hundreds of fascinating facts.

From Publishers Weekly
In a book that should delight amateur scientists, Garber offers a comprehensive guide to the plant and animal kingdoms and their relationship to urban life. Among his subjects: clover, which originates from the pea family, and honey-locust trees, which flourish in many suburban neighborhoods and were used to replace elms that died of Dutch Elm disease. As for fauna, Garber notes that although most snakes can't survive in the city, there are some that thrive in parks and garages, and he retells the story of the New York drug manufacturer who a century ago wanted to hear every bird mentioned in Shakespeare's works and thus imported the starlingto the everlasting regret of many urban dwellers. Garber has written a wonderful and casual book about plants and animals, and if there is a lesson to be learned, it is that humans and nature should learn to live together, even in the city.

From Library Journal
Few books describe the plants and animals that coexist with man in the world's fastest growing habitaturban areas. But despite an excellent concept, this book disappoints. Both native and introduced plants and animals are described; but the logic of species selection is obscure, and often no effort is made to communicate why these species are successful and how this produces the assemblages of species that coexist with humans. Chatty and anecdotal entries weaken the text. Many line drawings (especially of plants) are not diagnostic of the organism. Not recommended. James R. Karr, Smithsonian Tropical Research Inst., Balboa, Panama

Filled with inaccuracies
By A Customer
As an urban ecologist working in NYC, I have to say I was disappointed with this book. I found it to be riddled with inaccuracies.
Instead, I HIGHLY recommend two books: Wild New York by Mittelbach & Crewdson or A Natural History of New York City by John Kiernan

The Urban Naturalist was the first and is still the best.
By howard e evans
The Urban Naturalist was the first book to recognize the importance of urban ecosystems in the grand scheme of things. This is not the only reason it's become a classic. It's enduring qualities include the fact that it's still by far the best book on the subject. It covers so much so well. And it speaks elegantly to such a wide range of audiences. While teaching about urban ecology it also teaches behavioral evolution and ecology from the perspective of a very gifted environmental professional.

It's not a field guide to NYC its an Urban Guide, and also describes common biology of any other Urban place.
By Nick Kapp
I picked up this book and read it through in one day. Typically I do not do that with field guides. While there are other natural history guides that are more inclusive of New York, "The Urban Naturalist" does more than list organisms that can be found in NYC. Basically its a realization that the Urban environmen exists, are unique and unlike many other bioms it is growing. "The Urban Naturalist" is a start at describing the Urban Biome and what organisms would be found in such a biome. In this way the Urban settings should all share some common species and Steven Garber does his best to identify some of these common species and discusses why they should do well in these settings and why the Norway Rat and Black Rat are found in our cities and not the native north american species.

I gave it only 4 stars because I would like to see an update of this book, color pictures and a better description of the universal Urban setting.

Global Corruption: Money, Power and Ethics in the Modern World, by Cockcroft Laurence

Corruption has played a pivotal role in determining the current state of the world - from mass poverty in developing countries, to the destruction of natural resources and to the erosion of trust in political parties. Laurence Cockcroft here argues that corruption has to be seen as the result of the interplay between elite ‘embedded networks’, greed and organised crime. He shows how the growth of corruption has been facilitated by globalisation, the integration of new and expanding markets into the world economy, and by the rapid expansion of ‘offshore’ financial facilities. These facilities provide a home to largely unregulated pools of finance derived from personal fortunes, organised crime and pricing malpractice in international trade. By identifying the main drivers of corruption world-wide and analyzing the current action to control them, this book suggests ways in which the problems caused by corruption can be addressed and ultimately prevented.

Review

"Laurence Cockcroft . . . knows as much about global corruption as anyone, and in a dozen short chapters his book provides a useful introduction. . . . His ideas should stimulate discussion."—International Affairs

"Laurence Cockcroft has built a formidable reputation as an anticorruption crusader and cofounder of Transparency International. He deserves personal credit for the development of antibribery legislation. His views on the way forward deserve close attention."—Rt. Hon. Dr. Vince Cable, author of The Storm: The World Economic Crisis and What it Means

"This thought-provoking book takes a wide sweep through the cause of corruption and its historical reality. It is a problem that will never disappear but must be constantly challenged and contained. This book will assist the struggle."—Clare Short, Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) and former UK Secretary of State for International Development.

"Corruption is a tax on development. . . . Wherever it grows, it hollows out governing institutions and undermines prosperity and stability. Laurence Cockcroft has written a brilliant analysis of its scale and malign results. His book deserves a place on the library shelf of everyone committed to sustainable development in free and plural societies."—Christopher Patten, former European Commissioner and Governor of Hong Kong

"[Global Corruption] will provide a good introduction to the important, if amorphous, issue of corruption. Laurence Cockcroft brings a wealth of experience to the subject and makes us reconsider the extent of the problem today."—TLS

"Cockcroft provides a candid narrative, distilling his experience in countries all over the world on corruption and its possible solutions. This makes for fascinating reading."—Luis Moreno-Ocampo, Former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court

A Missed Opportunity.
By Nandt1
A wide-ranging discussion of corruption around the world, written by an author described as one of the founders of the leading anti-corruption organization Transparency International, sounds like an appealing read. Sadly the opportunity has been largely squandered. Neither Mr. Cockcroft nor his publisher seems to believe in doing one's research and -- especially -- checking one's facts. As a result, the book is littered on a large scale with factual errors both mundane (dates, proper names, etc.) and more consequential, including serious misreadings of the political context for corruption in a number of the countries discussed here (e.g., the depiction of Mario Vargas Llosa of Peru as a strong presidential candidate from the Left, when in fact he ran on a neo-liberal platform for a center-right party, or a scrambled account of the role of Mexico in the international cocaine trade). This is a lazily-written book and it shows. A pity!

Laurence Cockcroft is a master of the subject and brings a wealth of experience. His Chapter headings neatly depict the major threats and current challenges in curbing corruption and the influence of organised crime.

Cutting Edge Coprruption Insights
By Frank Vogl
This is a superb in-depth analysis of the multiple facets of the global corruption challenge. The author brings enormous experience from his work as a development economist and as a co-founder of Transparency International to a consideration of some of the most complex issues of money laundering, corporate bribe-paying, organized crime and the undermining of good governance, bribery and political campaign financing. His conclusions are tough and hard-headed. This is must reading for all in academia, civil society, business and the law who are keen to deepen their understanding of one of the gravest threats to development and economic progress.

This is an essential guide for anyone wishing to make transparent soap. The author guides you seamlessly through the complex soap making process with step-by-step instructions color photos & a very helpful troubleshooting section.
The book starts out detailing the properties, advantages & disadvantages of each soap ingredient. Then safety precautions & equipment selection are outlined, including selecting a mold.
Two methods for making the soap & 8 vegetable-based soap recipes follow. Conveniently, complete instructions for modifying these & formulating your own original recipes are included as well. Adding dyes & fragrances is also discussed. Several essential oil fragrance formulas are included.
I was very impressed that the book included both instructions & complete plans in for making labor-saving tools including a square wooden soap mold, an adjustable-wire bar cutter & drill mixer. The extensive resource list including websites was also invaluable.

Please Use Extreme Caution
By Julia A. Rose
I bought this book for myself. I read it over several times and became very familiar with the process before attempting anything. The book is extremely informative and well-written. Very easy to understand. The description of ingredients and the purpose of each one was very useful. Beautiful pictures. Nice sections on coloring, fragrancing & moulding. Great info. on where ingredients can be purchased. However, even though I followed the directions for the alcohol/lye method to the letter, I still had a disastrous first experience. My mixture, simmering on lowest possible heat, boiled up and oozed out the sides, despite the tightly cinched bungee holding the sheets of plastic in place. My inner pot ended up floating on boiling soap foam. I managed to save the remainder that was left in the pot and finished the simmering proccess directly on the burner (after cleaning the outside of the pot thoroughly). I estimated the amount of sugar/water solution and glycerin to add to it. Although I can't vouch for the amounts of any of the ingredients at this point, the stuff that I did save managed to come out very well. Looks pretty, smells great and lathers beautifully. I'm just lucky my stove top didn't burst into flames considering the flamable alcohol that oozed over the sides of the pot. I believe next time I try this (soon) I will ajust the method to what I consider safe and hope that it works well. If you plan on making this soap, please be sure to have an extinguisher close by. I'm not sure why I had such a horrible time with this method, but I'd hate for it to be worse for anyone else.

Published posthumously in 1908, Ecce Homo was written in 1888 and completed just a few weeks before Nietzsche's complete mental collapse. Its outrageously egotistical review of the philosopher's life and works are redeemed from mere arrogance by masterful language and ever-relevant ideas — in addition to settling scores with his many personal and philosophical enemies.

Portrait Of An Ubermensch
By A Customer
In Ecce Homo, Nietzsche, clocked in the overt convention of the critical autobiography, lashes out at the practice of divorcing art from action. He takes aim at the reification of the linguistic world, which he believes has grown at the expense of the pre-linguistic world and his quarrel is with those who use words to mediate their experiences in the world in order to deny their own heroic capabilities.
"Saying 'Yes' to life," says Nietzsche, "is its strangest and hardest problem; the will to life rejoicing over its inexhaustibility even in the sacrifice of its highest types--that is what I call Dionysian, that is what I understood as the bridge to the psychology of the tragic poet." This Dionysian status, he goes on to say, is not gained through "thumbing through books," but by suffering through experience and rejoicing in the vitality of living.
Nietzsche also writes, "In questions of decadence I am experienced." In this he intimates his own experience of life denial through words and his imagery compares intellectual endeavors with physical conditions, e.g. digestion.
"The German spirit," he says, "is an indigestion: it does not finish with anything." Nietzsche uses the human stomach as a metaphor of the reification of the linguistic world. The stomach digests food by breaking it down into its component parts, readily recognizable to physiology but having little to do with the original product.
An orange, after all is not just vitamin C. Furthermore, says Nietzsche, what the body cannot use is rejected as waste product. When disorders of the stomach occur, the body cannot distinguish between waste and nutrient and consequently it churns endlessly, causing distress to the entire organism. Nietzsche, himself, is not embarrassed by his experience of decadence but sees it as something which has given him a special sensitivity to the "signs of ascent and decline."
For Nietzsche, the world is a chaotic place, given order only by the imposition of human will. Humans, in this way, says Nietzsche, create something out of nothing. However, in the face of the "abyss," man creates and acts as if his creation is real, in such a manner as to allow himself the vital and joyous activity of affirming the very importance of his creation. The heroic figure then moves on towards greater acts of creation using each personal, willful creation as a stepping stone, not towards an ultimate goal, but towards other projects. Nietzsche tells us to beware of the organizing "idea" which "...leads back from side roads and wrong roads...as a means towards a whole." The endless road of "becoming" is traveled by a will which is excited and invigorated by its trip, enjoying its stops along the way, but which ultimately has no other purpose but to go further and further as the journey becomes more and more exhausting.
For Nietzsche, the battle is always emphasized over the goal. It is a simple matter, he tells us, to conquer that which is already beneath you. To move beyond that which is your equal is the real test of the will. This is the essential process of "overcoming" which leads one higher and higher, eventually reaching the experience of the "tragic." As the linguistic world becomes more and more complex, its position in relation to nothingness becomes more and more precarious. This situation threatens a fall of apocalyptic proportions, for it is necessary for the tragic aesthetic that there be a certain height to the descent. For Nietzsche, rejoicing in the sacrifice of the highest types is a key element in experiencing tragedy.
"...and whoever wants to be a creator in good and evil, must first be an annihilator and break values." Creation, according to Nietzsche presupposes the willingness to destroy. The order we impose upon the world is a constraint upon us when the time to overcome occurs, and at such times, the spirit of the Ubermensch is needed in order to decimate the linguistic constructs that we have come to depend upon. For original, creative activity to be allowed, there must be nothing available to plagiarize or react against. Nietzsche refers to this resignation in the face of the void as "Russian fatalism" which occurs when the individual no longer attempts to "...accept anything at all--to cease reacting altogether."
In the end, for Nietzsche, nobility of spirit is akin to a meniscus, relying on the tension created by contrasting nothingness with creation. It can tolerate very little unequal pressure; too much and it ruptures. And aesthetically pleasing life is to be sought in that in between area inaccessible to words or to action alone. Ironically, Nietzsche's severe philosophy seems to advocate a kind of moderation. For the truly heroic figure is valued for his ability to live a life in which he moderates the need for order with the desire for creative action. Standing between empowerment and dissolution, as he must, the hero, says Nietzsche, is as deserving of "songs of praise" as is any god.

Wonderful Self-Portrait
By Steiner
Nietzsche's literary addendum to his philosophical oeuvre is, at its root, a radically modern autobiography. Written weeks before his collapse into paralysis, these are the final reflections of cogency from this great thinker; the sections are indeed self-inflated and passionate, with titles like `Why I am So Wise,' and `Why I am So Clever,' etc. However, Nietzsche is finally dubious about his reputation and whether or not he will ever be truly understood. He insists that his name "will be associated with the memory of something tremendous," and indeed it would. His work sought to expose the power structures of old societies and to expose the moral systems of Christianity. Nietzsche's tone is eerily prophetic as he insists that "there will be wars the like of which no one has ever seen," his stylish prose rings of a bold yet hysterical urgency. However, at the foundation of Nietzsche's thought is one of the great and subtle tensions in philosophy, the idea that his negating and destroying are "conditions of saying Yes." This is the difficulty of Nietzsche, who is all too easily categorized as the "Will to Power" philosopher of the modern period. We are still catching up to his profound insight, and this self-analysis should be a window into his genius and original intentions.

If only all autobigraphies were like this...
By Hethur Suval
"Ecce Homo, on eof the supreme masterpieces of German prose, is perhaps the strangest 'autobiography' ever written"
"In late 1888, only four weeks before his final collapse into madness, Nietzsche (1844-1900) set out to trace his development as a tragic philosopher. He examines the heroes he has identified with, struggled against, and then overcome - Schopenhauer, Wagner, Christ - he predicts the cataclysmic impact of his forthcoming revaluation of all values, and he gives final, definitive expression to his main beliefs. Throughout he employs the range of exuberant but unsettling styles descibed in Michael Tanner's Introduction, 'the high spirits, the manic self-celebrations, the parodistic orgies', which blend with a far more elegiac voice in a way 'that is uniquely moving, especially when one knows that total and permanent breakdown was imminent.'"
Isn't this what we are looking for when we go to read an autbiography? Isn't this the spirit that those who choose to write their autobiographies are interested in? Nietzsche was definitley ahead of his time in this genre of prose...take a look at Martha Stewart and Oprah....

The Beauty of the Beastly, by Natalie Angier

Natalie Angier knows all that scientists know - and sometimes more - about the power of symmetry in sexual relations, about the brutal courting habits of dolphins, about the grand deceit of orchids, about the impact of female and male preferences on evolution. She knows how scientists go about their work, and she describes their ways, their visions, and their arguments. Perhaps most poignantly, she understands the complexities and the sad necessity of death. "The beauty of the natural world lies in the details, and most of those details are not the stuff of calendar art," she points out. Few writers have ever covered so many facets of biology so evocatively in one book. The Beauty of the Beastly tells us how the genius of the biological universe resides in its details and proves why, according to Timothy Ferris, author of the acclaimed Coming of Age in the Milky Way, Angier is "one of the strongest and wittiest science writers in the world today."

From Publishers Weekly
Angier (Natural Obsessions: The Search for the Oncogene), the Pulitzer Prize-winning science reporter for the New York Times, confesses that she enjoys writing "about organisms that many people find repugnant: spiders, scorpions, parasites, worms, rattlesnakes, dung beetles, hyenas." In these elegant essays (most of which have appeared in the Times), Angier discusses sexual and parental behavior, medical and health issues from an evolutionary and cross-species perspective. Not afraid to anthropomorphize, she even sees molecules as characters in little plays; the decadence of orchids, she says, would make Oscar Wilde wilt. Other topics introduce the latest discoveries in molecular biology and the work of female scientists. From cockroaches to cheetahs, DNA to elephant dung, Angier gives us intimate and dramatic portraits of nature that readers will find rewarding. Author tour.

From Booklist
Angier, a Pulitzer Prize^-winning science writer for the New York Times, admits that she anthropomorphizes "shamelessly," a perspective that imbues her marvelous essays with a palpable delight in life's madcap ingenuity. Not only does every creature, even a roundworm, have consciousness, even personality, but under Angier's perspicacious scrutiny, so do molecules. Although terrified of cockroaches as a child, Angier has become a champion of roaches and their ilk--" the bloodsuckers, the low lowlifes, and the brutes" --and writes glowingly about such intriguing creatures as scorpions, pit vipers, and parasites. She has organized her widely varied and snappily composed essays under such headings as "Loving" (monogamy is not evolution's favored practice), "Dancing" (DNA's graceful and efficient choreography), "Slithering" (creepy crawlers), "Adapting" (the importance of play in the development of muscle tissue and the brain), "Healing" (what menstruation really achieves), "Creating" (the indisputable link between art and madness), and "Dying." In every essay, Angier offers us something new to ponder, whether she's proving that dolphins aren't cute, describing androstenedione, the female equivalent of testosterone, or explaining how joy actually promotes health. Donna Seaman

Review
Descriptions of scientists at work and images of the unusual in the world of nature blend in a fine study of the nature of life. Angier's style is rambling at times but ultimately draws some important connections between scientific study and human nature. From parasites to viper venom and hormonal activities, these essays ultimately create an intriguing unifying theory. -- Midwest Book Review

A book that made me yelp with joy
By A Customer
I am a noisy reader. I groan when I come across clumsy wordings or badly twisted sentences. I sigh when I am bored. I snort when I encounter assertions that are (in my view) outrageous. And occasionally, meeting up with prose that startles me with its elegance, vividness, and originality, I find myself uttering an involuntary yelp of sheer joy. Mind you, this doesn't happen very often. It doesn't happy very often at all when I'm reading pieces about science, and certainly not when the subjects of the pieces are animals such as cockroaches, scorpions, and pit vipers. Yet my passage through The Beauty of the Beastly was punctuated with innumerable such yelps. I couldn't help myself. How else can you respond to a book that describes an orchid this way: "They are the P.T. Barnums of the flower kingdom, dedicated to the premise that there is a sucker born any minute: a sucker, that is, with wings, a thorax, and an unquenchable thirst for nectar and love." Or one i! n which the author says of the lowly dung beetle: "In the vast world of beetles, they have the stamp of nobility, their heads a diadem of horny spikes, their bodies sheathed in glittering mail of bronze or emerald or cobalt blue." Yelp! Yelp! I didn't feel guilty about making such a racket because the author of The Beauty of the Beastly writes so directly and personally to the reader that I suspect she hopes the reader will respond directly and personally as well. I happen to be an animal lover, and probably have more tolerance for insects and reptiles than many people. But I'm convinced that Natalie Angier could coax even my friend with a terrible snake phobia into some fondness for the creatures. Perhaps more to the point, I emerged from the book with new thoughts and a new approach to those things that creep and crawl and jump. "...if there is any lesson I have learned in my years of following science," Angier writes, "it is that nothing is at it! seems. Instead, things are as they seem plus the details y! ou are just beginning to notice." No one, I think, is as good at noticing them as Angier herself.

Up close to life
By Stephen A. Haines
Angier's urge to teach us all about Nature is irrepressible. Metaphor is her bow, with anthropomorphism a valuable arrow in her quiver. Enzymes become muscular bodyguards, orchids are lazy, deceptive, or magnanimous and scorpions can be "model spouses and parents." Such imagry will leave many "bench scientists" aghast at her "softening" the science, but others, and we readers, applaud her ability at stripping away the arcane aspects of dealing with Nature's wonders. She exposes life with a fresh view, making us intimate with its wonders and coming away with enhanced interest to learn more. That is precisely her aim and she scores a bullseye with every essay.
She has grouped the essays into seven major topic areas ranging from adapting to slithering. The categories cover genetic mechanisms DNA uses through mating practices to the ultimate "subject that knows no species boundaries, the cloak with room to cover us all - death." Before arriving at this terminal condition, however, Angier is able to sprinkle petals of flowery prose on prolonging life. In "Why Vegetables Are Good For You," she provides new information on plant chemistry's impact on our bodies. That dread aspect of civilized life, fat, is also given attention - and its due. You will be delighted with her revelations on "adipose pucker."
After a set of paeans celebrating various practicing scientists, Angier finally turns to the "great mystery" - the ending of life. "Cell death is universal to life," she begins. Demonstrating its necessity in allowing evolution to proceed, she proceeds to relate how the process of cell death provides insights in the diagnosis and treatment of various afflictions. In tracking the mechanisms leading to the demise of various cells, particularly within our immune system, reseachers have found new genetic signals that keep our bodies healthy. Otherwise, we would be likely to self-destruct. It's a fine balance kept continually on a fine tightrope. Yet, after aknowledging its necessity, Angier doesn`t accept there's such a thing as "a good way to die." The loss of a friend leads her to express the mechanism of the AIDS
virus and the epidemic's effect on social thinking.
Angier's imaginative essays provide a wealth of topics for further thought, even investigation. It's a pity she failed to provide any supportive reading suggestions. Many of her essays discuss the researchers while omitting to identify them. There's no reason to discount the facts she provides for our enjoyment and edification, but pursuit of a chosen topic is impeded by lack of pointers. That shortcoming is alleviated only by the fact that an index is provided. However, the range of topics and Angier's prose nearly overcome the lack of a bibliography.

The Unapologetic Anthropomorphist
By B. Jensen
Natalie Angier explains in the introduction to her collected that while there is a raging debate in the science community on the "propriety of anthropomorphism," she weighs in with the anthropomorphists to the point of anthropomorphizing plants and even molecules. And it is this empathy that Angier feels with the lowliest that makes this such a fascinating and ultimately educational read.

The chapters are short, as they are reworked columns printed previously in the New York Times, but they are strung together to depict a fascinating portrait of life in all its complexities from nucleic acids to the sex life of hyenas. Angier's compassion and passion for life is the guiding force that links the essays. The individual essays stand alone as sturdy little dramas of life in its many forms, but between the covers of this beautiful and beastly book, they stand together as a portait of the deep connectedness of all life.

Natural Dyes and Home Dyeing (Dover Pictorial Archives), by Rita J. Adrosko

Here in a single volume is all the information you will need to extract dyestuffs from common trees, flowers, lichens, and weeds — all the information you need to create beautifully dyed materials after your own fancy, distinctive and individual.
The heart of this book is fifty-two recipes for dyes made from natural, easily obtained dyestuffs: brown dyes from the bark of apple, birch, hemlock, hickory, and maple trees; yellows from a wide variety of sources such as arsemart, white ash bark, barberry bark, sassafras, lichens, camomile flowers, and coffee beans; reds from madder, cochineal, Brazilwood, and alkanet; blues from woad, chemic, orchil and cudbear, as well as from the popular indigo; and blacks most commonly made from logwood and soot. There is also the possibility of combining any of these by top-dyeing (successive dyeing) — instructions for which are given.
Each recipe gives you step-by-step instructions that tell you how to prepare your ingredients, how to shred, soak, dissolve, and boil the materials you collect, how to prepare your cloth (whether cotton or wood) for dyeing, and exactly how long to boil it for optimum results.
Besides the fifty-two recipes, most of which are given in several versions, Miss Adrosko deepens your knowledge of dyeing techniques with a history of the craft before the discovery of America, among the colonists, and after 1850 when synthetic dyes began to be used. Appendixes list dyes mentioned in early dyers' manuals printed in America, and give excerpts from three 19th-century treatises which reveal literally hundreds of sources for natural dyestuffs. Concisely written, well organized, this book will not only let you make all the dyes described in its pages, but will also give you the skills to make your own exciting discoveries in a field that has long been neglected.

A good reference book for the dyer
By J. Osborne
This is an excellent book full of information and history of natural dying. The book goes over the history of natural dying and how it came about and was used by the European Colonists in America. There is a short history of dying during B.C. It then goes on to tell of how each colour was introduced and made. This section includes sketches of the plants Indigo, Madder, Annatto and Sumach. The second section of the book goes over colour. IT is too bad that there are no colour photos in this section. But it details about the variations of colour one gets from home dying, and the preperation and equiptment one needs to start. The best part of this book, however, is the 52 recipes for dyes made from easily obtainable natural material. The recipes help you to obtain the colour you want by equating this much plant plus this much moderant on this much fiber. IT is amazing to see how much the moderant has to do with the final colour. There are also charts for top dying. The book doesn't have much in the way of technique or how to prepare different materials, but the recipes take care of this and are worth it.

A rose by any other name
By Linda Pagliuco
A classic in the field of home hobby dyeing, Natural Dyes provides a historical overview of the field from its early days, information of the basic sort about mordants, fabrics, and dyes, and a series of reliable and effective recipes for dyeing wool with plant materials. As a textile arts demonstrator at a local museum, I always check my facts here, and refer to Androsko before trying something new. This book is valuable as reference and as handbook, and has the added advantage of warning the reader if a particular process is likely to be tricky or troublesome. Definitely worth having on hand!

By P. Newdigate
A well researched and written book, with a wealth of useful information. The edition I have is unfortunately without any colour pictures, the info is however worth every cent.
