Great for Reluctant Readers

I love the idea of mixing the art of comics inside a book to get kids reading. Diary of a Wimpy Kid has done that and Big Nate is also formatted in a similar way.

Big Nate is a middle school student who gets into enough trouble to create interest but not so much as you wonder what in the world he's thinking. He has two buddies that are along for a laugh and often at his expense. And guess what? There is some girl trouble that keeps the story interesting. The girl in this story happens to be Gina, his archenemy. The two get paired up for a report on Ben Franklin, and that part of the story truly delivers a bit of educational content. But when they get paired up for a sports team Gina has the nerve to name the team without the okay from her team captain, Big Nate.

The second book is easy enough to pick up even if you've missed the first book and it is geared for those on a 2nd to 5th grade reading level. The plot isn't heavy. It's not something that you'll learn great life lessons from. What it does, and does well, is gets kids reading who might not normally be into reading. The change from text to comic so often keeps the reader interested and moves the story along with the visual clues that some kids need when reading at this level. Don't think this one is just for boys either. My eight year-old daughter saw the book arrive and immediately offered to do the book review for me. She's next to read it!

Kids who love Greg Hefley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid are going to love Nate Wright. Parents will probably like Nate better.

Based on the comic strip "Big Nate" this series details the trials and tribulations of 6th grader Nate Wright. Nate finally has a chance to win the coveted SPOFFY Trophy (Sports Played Only For Fun). He's been selected as a team captain for fleeceball - an indoor version of baseball. But nothing ever goes smoothly. Kept after school by a teacher, Nate is unable to make it to the meeting to pick his team. He lucks out and his best friends Teddy and Francis are on the team, but so is his archenemy - A+ know it all Gina! Not only does he have to put up with Gina on his fleeceball team, he's paired with her on a social studies project. Can things get any worse or more hilarious?

The humor in this book is definitively age appropriate. As an elementary librarian I spend a good deal of time around young children. The humor is right on target, but it's not so obnoxious (as some kid like humor - Captain Underpants for example - can be) that adults will not enjoy it as well. I love Jeff Kinney and his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. But lets be honest, I think I like Nate better. (Don't worry I'll still anxiously await any new Wimpy Kid books.) Nate is one of those likeable characters. Always up to something, but so charming you can't help but like him. If you work in a school, you know what I'm talking about.

As I mentioned in the beginning, I received an Advanced Readers' Copy of this book. I liked it so much that not only am I going to recommend it to my students, I've already ordered a hard cover copy of this and the first book in the series for my library at home.

Recommended for 3rd grade and up. (The AR reading level is 3.0 and even though Nate is a 6th grader, based on my experience I'm pretty sure 3rd grade and older will enjoy this book.)

Just a different name

This was a book for one of my classes for my Masters. I didn't really see anything new. Just an Applied Behavior Analysis with a different name. I only got about four chapters in before I stopped reading it and still could answer every question using my knowledge of ABA. It was not a bad book and it never hurts to have more knowledge and different model to use but if you have any knowledge of Behavior Analysis don't be surprised if you find yourself saying this is nothing new.

Litter: What It Tells Us About Culture and The Meaning of Life?

This latest book by Dr Dalrymple follows the major themes developed in several earlier books, most of which examine “what remains of the culture” in England, and what has been lost. As a doctor and psychiatrist who has worked in the environs of Liverpool, as well as in foreign lands, he has witnessed the changing economic and cultural attitudes of the great mass of patients that he has tended. And the worldview of today’s youth appalls this serious doctor who still respects the traditional British virtues of proper behavior, self-reliance, and respect for their nation’s past.
On a recent 400-mile drive between London and Glasgow, he was fascinated by the unsightly roadside, “strewn practically every yard with litter,” and the mess made him wonder: “What does it say about a culture when a country tips its rubbish anywhere it likes?” This book provides his answer, and directly connects the many cultural changes of the last 50 years to the growth of litter. His concluding lines indicate the scope of the connections he writes about: “Trace litter to its origins, and you soon encounter the knotty questions of political philosophy, political economics, and even the meaning of life.” It’s amazing what his fertile mind can do, all developed from one simple observation of trash! A great, informed, and witty read!

The author laments how the new generations in England, instead of having been taught history, and how their countrymen got to attain a high level of freedom and affluence, have instead been taught that their country, and their grandparents, were evil. A result is that students learn to revile the past without knowing much about it. Without some solid learning, they can make no comparisons of past and present, leading to a non-judgmental population. The author writes, “Never before has an entire generation floated so freely in the present moment.” Their uninformed worldview “makes them putty in the hands of politicians.”

He blames current school methods for creating an abstract minded generation that no longer thinks in pragmatic ways. Instead, they have been taught to hope and dream, with little grasp of reality. “The expansion of tertiary education did not occur mostly in technical subjects but rather in those that dealt with social and political issues.” With disdain for the past, these newly empowered theorists imagine a perfect world, and not finding one, they believe their teachers, and “everything that exists is found to be severely wanting and therefore of very little use.”
Dalrymple also faults the new intelligentsias. Because they rely on idealized concepts of what could be, they only see the social problems which serve to justify their existence as critics. As a result, “they feel called upon to emphasize, not the achievements, but the follies and crimes of history.” His problem with intellectuals is thus comparable to those issues raised by Thomas Sowell and Paul Johnson.
With little grasp of history, and contempt for the world they live in, today’s activists advocate solutions that are often bereft of logic or common sense. They can “express a tender concern for the environment. . .critique the chemical poisoning of the earth. . . worship the biosphere. . . yet ignore the litter they created. And they will blame the litter on greedy corporations and the horrid plastic containers created by capitalism. Never mind that it was the individual students, not the corporations, that threw the debris out the windows of their cars. Dalrymple concludes, “The disconnect between the rhetoric and actual behavior of the students could not be greater and is a sign of a change in national character.”
The author also blames a shift from religious beliefs to self-worship and victimhood: The people of Britain 100 years ago believed in self-sacrifice and were dedicated to moral behavior; today’s people look to government to solve the world’s problems. They believe that people are innocent and “if men do bad things it is because something has perverted them from their original goodness. . .it is the social and economic structures that are bad, not they themselves.” And, they conclude that they can do what they want until such time as the structure of the world brings about perfection.”
Dalrymple believes this abstract thinking of the new generations contributes to today’s strict political correctness: It has become necessary for such people to believe, while waiting for a perfect world, that they should express “the right opinions,” and even occasionally protest the existing order. “To be good, one does not need to act well, just think and express the right opinions.” Indeed, acting badly, even littering, can become a valid protest against the inadequacies of the existing culture. Such confused minds can totally dismiss personal responsibility and yet blame everyone else for the world’s shortcomings.
Dalrymple, like Edmund Burke long before him, stresses the need for personal restraint and moral behavior by all those wishing to live in freedom. Liberty is suitable only for those who will police themselves, restrain their worst impulses, and contribute to the community. Those who cannot do that, and litter the roads, among other nasty things, will always weaken the community and require a morass of laws and regulations to control their bad behavior. “It is their bad behavior that forges their fetters.”

Brilliant social satire

As always, Anthony Daniel, writing under his odd pseudonym of Theodore Dalrymple, delivers insightful and clever commentary on British, and by extension, modern Western society. This time he does it by analyzing the breathtaking amount of litter and detritus left on British streets and parks and beaches. His books will make you laugh and will make you think about what has gone wrong with modern society.

As usual Theodore Dalrymple nails it. Too bad more people don't read his writings. They should be required of all politicians. England may have a litter problem, but Dalrymple goes into the whys and how it got that way. We here in the USA should really take note.

An unremitting tale of greed and betrayal, originally intended as one-third of Norris' never-completed "Epic of the Wheat" trilogy.

About the Author
Frank Norris was an American author who wrote primarily in the naturalist genre, focusing on the impact of corruption and turn-of-the-century capitalism on common people. Best known for his novel McTeague and for the first two parts of his unfinished The Epic of the Wheat trilogyThe Octopus: A Story of California and The Pit, Norris wrote prolifically during his lifetime. Following his education at the Acad?mie Julian in Paris, University of California, Berkeley, and at Harvard University, Norris worked as a news correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, and covered the Spanish-American War in Cuba for McClure s Magazine. Norris died suddenly in 1902 of peritonitis, leaving The Wolf: A Story of Empire, the final part of his Wheat trilogy, incomplete.

Wheat barons vs. railroad barons

Based on an actual incident, "The Octopus" is set in the San Joaquin Valley of central California towards the end of the 19th century -- not long before it was written. It concerns a dispute between the Pacific & Southwestern Railroad (in historical reality, the Southern Pacific) which owns the land it runs through and the tenant wheat ranchers who farm it. For one thing, the ranchers would like to own the land by buying it off the railroad, but the railroad raises the price per acre to exorbitant levels in violation of a previous contract; also, the ranchers are protesting the railroad's monopolistic policy of charging high freight rates for shipping wheat, which cuts into their profits.
The characterization of the novel is rather straightforward. The "heroes" are the ranchers, which include "Governor" Magnus Derrick, an ostensibly upstanding politician; Broderson, an ineffectual old man; Osterman, a loudmouthed joker; Annixter, an irascible and obstinate misogynist; and an engineer named Dyke who starts his own hops business after being laid off by the railroad. The author himself is presumably represented by a third-party observer named Presley, a poet who lives on the Derrick ranch and is using the scenery and the conflict as inspiration. The "villain" is, of course, the railroad, which is personified by a porcine banker named S. Behrman who acts as the railroad's agent and mouthpiece and whose frequent insensitivity and cruelty reduces him to a simplistic caricature.
The ranchers decide that the best way to keep the railroad's freight rates under control is to elect their own officials to the state Railroad Commission, which would entail bribery; after all, the railroad practically owns the Commission as it is. Despite their getting the Governor's son, Lyman Derrick, to represent them on the Commission, the ranchers' scheme proves ineffective. The railroad ultimately offers the wheat land for sale at the raised prices and sends "dummy" buyers out to dispossess the ranchers, who arm themselves to defend their homes. The result is a shockingly violent confrontation that shakes Presley's sentiments to the core.
"The Octopus" has some elements that I found distracting, puzzling, or faulty. First, there is not just one but *two* romantic subplots: Annixter's difficult courtship with a girl whose family works on his ranch (but at least we see how his marriage transforms his character positively and plausibly); and the shepherd/spiritualist Vanamee's incomprehensible nightly summonings of the ghost of his long-lost love Angele. Some of the dialogue is rendered flaccid by the use of euphemisms -- it's unbelievable that Annixter would refrain from calling Behrman anything worse than a "pip." The unctuous tone it applies to its oppressed-worker-vs.-corporate-monster theme is similar to the approach Steinbeck would use almost forty years later in "The Grapes of Wrath."
Despite its obvious flaws, however, "The Octopus" manages to be an exemplary work of American literature. The subject matter is unique and necessary for its time, and the commercial and legal aspects of the conflict are treated with maturity and confidence. It uses the perpetual production of wheat as a metaphor for the continuous cycle of the good of the earth prevailing over the evil of men. But most importantly, it achieves the highest purpose of a novel about business: It examines the integrity and resolve of men faced with financial ruin.

An epic saga about the turn-of-the-century Railroad trusts.

Definitely not for all tastes, but a strong work, with well-drawn characters and some very beautiful (albeit long) prose passages. Norris has a habit of driving his point into the ground (a section near the end of the novel, which juxtaposes a mother and child starving to death on the street with a wealthy, upperclass, elitist meal comes to mind), but over all a profound and powerful work. Originally intended as the first part of a proposed "Trilogy of Wheat," Norris died near the publication of the second book (see "The Pit.") Definitely recommended for those who enjoy great American literature.

Makes me want to learn more about "Old" California

Today when we think of California we think of what else but Los Angeles and San Francisco. Many people forget that California has a rich history based in agriculure and mining. The Octopus tells a story about California's past and the epic struggle between the Wheat farmers and the all powerful railroads. The characters are dynamic and Norris has written the story so brilliantly that you actually feel for the characters. If you read this book you also must read "The Pit" also by Norris which tells the tale of the Chicago Commodities market and one mans overpowering desire to "corner" the wheat market.

About the Author
Daniel King, who also writes as "David King," was born in Western Australia and has lived there all his life. He holds degrees in Engineering and English, and a Doctorate in Philosophy. Daniel's first literary publication was in 1986, and since then he has had over fifty stories (and also, in recent years, poetry) published in various Australian and overseas journals.

A very effective book

When I look over a grandmaster game, I don't ask, "Why'd he do that?" Anybody can wave his hands and answer something incontrovertible like, "This move supports the piece on x and prepares for an attack." How helpful is that?
Instead, I ask, "Why didn't he do this other move?" This book makes an effort to answer that question for moves in about 20 master games of the 1990s.
The format is simple and consistent. After each move by the losing side, you are asked to choose your own move. Then you are graded. You get an amount of credit proportional to the strength of your move. If it's a blunder, that is often pointed out as well.
This helps you to learn from your own mistakes. It's far more instructive than most books of annotated games. It's simpler than Nunn's move-by-move book, deeper than Chernev's, and more like actually playing a game since you are only thinking about the moves made by one side.
In a way, the book is similar to Chris Ward's 'It's Your Move', but vastly superior, as this book discusses more alternative moves and far more positions. (Ward's 'Improvers' version, however, is quite good.)
Highly recommend for anyone with a rating between 1500-1700. I have no idea how accurate the rating predictions of the book are, but who cares?

Learn Through Enjoyment

This book contains twenty games played in the 1990s by world-class players (like Shirov, Anand and Kramnik) with questions and points awarded at critical move decisions. GM Daniel King's commentary is entertaining and insightful. In Christiansen-Browne 1990, game 4 entitled "Roll of the Dice," for example, he notes after move 17 "if by some brainstorm you came up with this move, take two points, a couple of tranquilizers, and rest of the week off work" before pointing out the positional considerations involved "the bishop on f4 is the one worth preserving as it is settled on such a good square." I am not claiming, however, this is a comprehensive chess self-improvement course. There is a didactic quality throughout the book but it is not in the style of Nunn's Understanding Chess or Chernev's Logical Chess. Just enjoy the games, watch how the pros do it, and take the rest of the week off work.

You can really improve your chess feeling in playing thru the interesting games only if you try to solve all the questions (a question a move) without looking at the answer. But if you do it, success is guaranted. The introduction to the games is interesting also and gives an inner view of the grandmasters world.

During the course of my studying the book, i discovered that the book goes indepth in making the concept of fourier series analysis simplified. As an engineer i make use of fourier series applications often both in my research work and in the teaching of my students to a great extent i have found this book extremely useful in that it aids the level of understanding. I have also realised that even to a novice that picks up this book will find it very interesting to a large extent.As it is known that fourier series is very usefu in engineering study , especially in the area of solving heat condition problems and for specific applications in engineering design. The book has taken a more comprehensive form which makes reading very easy . I prefer this book because it follows a progressive sequence of explanation.The introduction of fourier integral into the fourier series solution has brought to a great extent the use of partial differential equations in eral life engineering problems . The book has also made the engineering concepts defined practicable, by demonstration of a straight forward attempt aimed at pionting out the extent to which engineerig is usefuk in our everyday lives. This book should be recomended in schools as the true book avalaible in the understanding of the concept of fourier series. Orthogonal function study has also been made in such a way that a first time reader will find it easy in terms of the concept and context.

Rigor and intuition -- a classic

I learned Fourier analysis on my own, and mostly from this book. Its intuitive content is excellent, but it is a rigorous math text, approaching the subject form an algrbraic viewpoint. He treats convergence issies in detail and in a well-motivated fashion. "Read Who is Fourier" for an intro, and read this for the math behind the intuition.

EXCELLENT

This is one of the best mathematics books I've been fortunate enough to come across as someone with a B.S in mathematics and as a current graduate student. The explanations are very clear, and details typically left out by other authors are included, whether it be in definitions, concepts, proofs, or examples. The title is somewhat deceiving in that much more material is covered than one would think. If I could give this book 6 stars, I certainly would.

Overpriced.

I read the first two books in this series and while I enjoyed them, I didn't enjoy them enough the plunk down another $10 per installment. I understand the author has around 10 books planned, in which case you, the reader will have spent around $100 to read the whole series. I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on a self published novel. Lower the prices significantly (around $2.99, which seems to be the going rate for self-published works) and I'm sure I would take the plunge.

Another wonderful book.

Once again, WOW. Things happened in the book, that have played out for real. Scary. I have gotten several people hooked on the series. We share and utilize some of the stuff we never thought about, that have been in the books so far. Good job, keep them coming. I shared one and two, then told everyone, you have to buy the rest yourselves.

Awesome series... hope it remains fiction

I have been patiently waiting for the third book of the 299 Days series since I finished the first two in a couple of days.

This third installment doesn't disappoint as we move further into the collapse and see how it plays out at the family/community level. We see Grant and his efforts to organize his community for survival, and the challenges they face in security, food, communications, and also in how to meld together a bunch of people who are forced by circumstance to work together. On the other hand, we see the efforts of the dysfunctional state government in its final throes as they organize their bands of brown shirts and try to retain control of the citizenry through force and fear, all the while living high on the hog themselves. I imagine Nancy Pelosi as I read about the Nancy in the story.

Can't wait to read the fourth book, I hope this remains fiction. But I prepare as if it is non-fiction.
