A Gift to the World War II Movie Fan
By Gary P. Cohen
As some one who greatly enjoys movies pertaining to World War II, I really enjoyed this book.
The book is divided into chapters concerning the various events of WWII: The Fall of France, The War in the Skies, The Pacific War, The D Day Landings, Special Ops in Europe, etc, etc. At the beginning of each chapter, the author gives a historical perspective of the films covered. Some of the films covered, he goes into great detail on: "Tora, Tora, Tora," "The Longest Day," "The Dirty Dozen," "Where Eagles Dare," "A Bridge Too Far," etc, etc. Unfortunately, some like "The Devil's Brigade," one of my all-time favorites, he only gives 1 sentence. Still it is nice to see him discuss some excellent WWII films that are hardly ever mentioned like "633 Squadron," "The Secret Invasion,""Hell Is For Heroes," "Armored Command" and "Tobruk." (Why is "Tobruk not out on DVD or Blu-ray?) It is during his description of "Tobruk" that he makes one of his few errors stating that both Craig (Rock Hudson) and Bergman (George Peppard) both survive at the end. In reality Bergman is killed when the flame thrower, he is using to torch some German tanks, explodes.
And while he discusses hundreds of films, there are some omissions. In the chapter on "The War in the Skies (1940-1945,) he somehow forgets "Command Decision," a terrific drama that starred Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon and Van Johnson. This film was released around the same time as "12 O'Clock High" and was not nearly as successful. Still it was an excellent film and should have been remembered.
The author is British and uses at times various British slang terms that I as an American did not get. He also goes into great detail describing the armaments present in each film and the replacement tanks, planes, etc. used in each film when the real ones were not available.
I had looked forward to this book as soon as I heard about it and ordered it as soon as it was available. I was not disappointed. If you are a fan of any of the films mentioned in this review or other terrific films like "The Great Escape," "The Guns of Navarone," "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "Patton," "Von Ryans Express," "Battle of the Bulge," etc., etc., then you will greatly enjoy this book, the same way I did.

Book on War Movies or War History Book?
By matt8386
3 stars out of five – the author can't quite seem to decide if he's writing a book about war movies or writing about the war itself. I can see if you want to give the reader a little back ground about the war or the context of the movie in the overall history, but the book bogs down in the length of each battle or conflict. The other problem with writing too much of the history is that you open yourself to disagreement regarding the interpretation of the history, which lessens the credibility of the reviews of the movie. I'd rather read a book on war movies from a movie critics view point, someone who can point out factoids regarding the film and comment on the techniques or style of direction, acting and such.

Generally speaking, those who are big fans of a particular genre such as war movies will know the subject matter. This frees the book up for more information about the film or more history about other films.

Credit the author for taking the risk to base his selection of movies on his likes vs. any set of objective criteria such as box office or critical success (no sarcasm). However, in doing so, some movies may be short changed or missed altogether. I also liked that the narrative contains data regarding what types of mock-ups or the real tanks/weapons were used.

Most war film buffs will agree with the author and his selection, some of Hugh's choices will be new or revealing. A good book, a different perspective, but not a one stop source of war movies.

Survey of WW II War Flicks!
By Mike O'Connor
Howard Hughes' WHEN EAGLES DARED is subtitled THE FILMGOER'S HISTORY OF WORLD WAR II. It's one of those 'history through cinema' creations that interweaves the actual historical events with the films that have depicted those events, however loosely. A 2012 Tauris & Company release, it surveys over 150 films made in America, England, Russia, France, Italy and various other countries.

Hughes surveys his subject topically. Chapters include 'The Fall of France,' 'The War in the Skies,' 'The Submarine War,' 'The Eastern Front,' 'Special Ops in Europe,' 'The Ardennes Offensive,' 'Operation Market Garden' and so on. Each chapter includes one "focus film" which Hughes feels best represents that chapter's subject. So, for example, THE GREAT ESCAPE is the focus film for the 'War Behind the Wire' chapter.

The book certainly casts a wide net. There are many old favorites covered along with flicks that were completely new to me. Coverage of the films vary. Some get several pages; others, a single sentence or two. I was, in fact, surprised that several classic flicks got short shrift. The text is illustrated with dozens of b&w pix and posters.

WHEN EAGLES DARED is enjoyable and informative. Film buffs and World War II enthusiasts alike should find something to enjoy within the book's 290 pages. Recommended.

Monograms and Alphabetic Devices (Lettering, Calligraphy, Typography)From Dover Publications

This book contains the entire contents of four fine volumes of monogram and allied devices published between 1830 and 1881. Over 2,500 monogrammatic and alphabetic designs are displayed in plates from "Dictionnaire du Chiffre-monogramme," etc., by Charles Demengeot (1881); "Monograms and Ciphers," by H. Renoir (1870–74); "Knight's New Book of Seven Hundred & Fifty Eight Plain, Ornamented & Reversed Cyphers" (1830); and "Monograms in Three and Four Letters," by J. Gordon Smith (n.d.).
There are monograms in every two-letter combination and extensive selections of three and four letters; name devices ("Alice," "Theodore," etc.), crowns, crests, coats of arms and helmets. There are heavy, intricately entwined monograms that appear as though engraved on metal; lighter, thick-and-thin script styles; fanciful and formal designs; monograms in circles, ovals, square shapes, and free outline; and an immense variety of letter styles, including many designed for the particular device.
A notable feature of this volume is the Index of Monograms and Ciphers, listing alphabetically every letter combination shown and the page or pages on which each appears ("S W", for example, is drawn in three different styles; "A L" in five; but "F N H W" in only one); and an Index of Names and Devices. Both features add greatly to the usefulness of the book. Importantly, every device shown may be reproduced by the purchaser free of charge.
Artists, designers, engravers, and craftspeople will find this book a prolific source of inspiration and unusual styles; typographers, calligraphers, draftspeople , and students will use it as an aid in creating their own letter designs; while those in the printing, publishing, advertising, and allied fields will call upon it whenever a distinctive monogram or decoration is needed.

The Grand-daddy
By Theseus
One of Dover's greatest volumes. 227 pages, over 2500 illustrations, gathering 4 complete books on monograms and allied devices published between 1830 and 1881. A great assemblage of 19th century design.

Suitable for historians, print junkies, designers, bibliophiles, taggers, and anyone who found themselves compulsively combining initials on scratch paper when bored in school.

My personal favorite is a vigorous and insane frontispiece: a Demengeot monogram of the entire alphabet.

I checked this out of the library. The monograms are in the realm of the fantastic. They are elaborate, florid, mesmerizing. But someone tore pages out of this book! I'd like to buy it but the price is a bit steep.

good basic edition
By Linnea Landin Burr
this is a good basic edition for the piano student. the book contains varied works of Grieg, including some beautiful, poignant, little-known songs of his that he arranged for piano solo. the German texts for these are printed in the book, and help the performer to understand the depth of feeling the composer intended in each piece. the book itself is not bound well, and doesn't seem as sturdy as some other editions. with care, though, it is a good resource for studying Grieg's piano music.

Great collection of works by Grieg
By Alfred Krebs
This is a very nice edition of piano works by Edvard Grieg. It includes the piano score of the Holberg Suite ("From Holberg's Time"), wich was originally written for piano and transcribed to the orchestral version later (the piano version is actually largely unknown). It is worth buying this publication because of that beautiful piano work alone, but many other short pieces and even a solo piano arrangement of the A minor piano concerto are included. My only criticism is that the edition is of the kind that uses glue to bind the pages, so with time I expect the pages to fall out... Other than that, I'm very happy.

Low-priced collection of Grieg piano music that should delight
By BillEvansFan
This is an inexpensive, useful collection of playable Grieg pieces which I have enjoyed for many years. I bought a replacement copy of the book after giving my original copy to my daughter for her playing pleasure. All of this music is available in higher-priced versions, but unless you are a conservatory student, this should suffice nicely. It includes a solo piano version of the Grieg Piano Concerto in A which I have enjoyed a great deal although it is a bit beyond me in some places. I really recommend it to intermediate to advanced pianists.

Dimensional Analysis: Examples of the Use of Symmetry (Dover Books on Physics), by Hans G. Hornung

Derived from a course in fluid mechanics, this text for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students employs symmetry arguments to demonstrate the principles of dimensional analysis. The examples provided illustrate the effectiveness of symmetry arguments in obtaining the mathematical form of the functions yielded by dimensional analysis. Students will find these methods applicable to a wide field of interests.
After discussing several examples of method, the text examines pipe flow, material properties, gasdynamical examples, body in nonuniform flow, and turbulent flow. Additional topics include waves on a free liquid surface, examples with other fluid properties, and ideal gas equations of state. Figures appear throughout the text, which concludes with a bibliography.

Not exactly what a reader expects
By ScienceThinker
This book is entitled "Dimensional Analysis: Examples of the use of symmetry". Hence a reader expects to find general material about Dimensional Analysis and then read about its application to various situations with the use of symmetry as an auxiliary tool. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The true title of the book should be "Problems in Fluid Mechanics using Dimensional Analysis and Symmetry".

This thin book is divided into 10 brief chapters. The first chapter is a quick introduction just a little over 2 pages; the second chapter, just a little over three pages, is a demonstration of the method to be applied. Then the remaining eight chapters deal with specific problems from fluid dynamics: pipe flow; material properties; gasdynamical examples; body in nonuniform flow; turbulant flow; waves on a free liquid surface; examples with other fluid properties; ideal gas equations of state. A short bibliography is included too. Although 1-2 chapters with the theory of dimensional analysis should be present anyway due to the title of the book and its subsequent use, such chapters are not included.

The book is probably useful to engineers working on fluid dynamics but it is hard to imagine that the book will become a hit to a wider audience and thus a Dover classic. Simply stated, this book is not really a book about dimensional analysis; it is about fluid mechanics as the author himself confesses in the opening statement of his brief preface: "The contents of this little book were first compiled as part of a series of lectures in fluid mechanics..."

Seiobo There Below (Ndp; 1280), by László Krasznahorkai

From the winner of the 2015 Man Booker International Prize

The latest novel from “the contemporary Hungarian master of the apocalypse” (Susan Sontag)

Seiobo — a Japanese goddess — has a peach tree in her garden that blossoms once every three thousand years: its fruit brings immortality. In Seiobo There Below, we see her returning again and again to mortal realms, searching for a glimpse of perfection. Beauty, in Krasznahorkai’s new novel, reflects, however fleetingly, the sacred — even if we are mostly unable to bear it. Seiobo shows us an ancient Buddha being restored; Perugino managing his workshop; a Japanese Noh actor rehearsing; a fanatic of Baroque music lecturing a handful of old villagers; tourists intruding into the rituals of Japan’s most sacred shrine; a heron hunting.… Over these scenes and more — structured by the Fibonacci sequence — Seiobo hovers, watching it all.

Review
“Near-infinite sentences in a nonlinear narrative shuttling across time and space, linked only by occasional appearances from a Japanese goddess? It sounds daunting, I realize. Yet the amazing thing about Seiobo There Below is that Krasznahorkai makes the whole thing feel utterly natural and utterly relevant. Krasznahorkai is one of contemporary literature's most daring and difficult figures, but although this book is ambitious, it isn't ever obscure. On the contrary: it places upon us readers the same demands of all great art, and allows us to grasp a vision of painstaking beauty if we can slow ourselves down to savor it.” (NPR Books)

“Krasznahorkai is an expert with the complexity of human obsessions. Each of his books feel like an event, a revelation, and Seiobo There Below is no different.” (The Daily Beast)

“László Kraznahorkai has given us a work that shimmers under a prism of hidden meanings. Our task is to connect the dots, experience the mystery of the text, and embrace moments of bewilderment with patience, openness, and preparation for a deeply meaningful encounter.” (The Millions)

“Krasznahorkai’s erudition is staggering, but the way he relates the choosing of the wood for the shrine, or the restoration of a canvas, is so attentive and so modest that is sidesteps pedantry entirely, and instead participates in the very concentration it describes. The chapters are numbered according to the Fibonacci sequence, in which each number is the sum of the two before it, and indeed, Seiobo There Below compounds and reinforces itself ever more rapidly, its scope soon defying human proportions... Finishing Seiobo There Below is like walking out of a cathedral: its parting gift is a ringing in the ears. This book is magnificent and will outlive interpretation.” (Madeleine LaRue - The Coffin Factory)

“Tinged both with sadness and an anxiety about the capability of language, this brilliantly ambitious novel, like the tragic poetry of one of its characters, becomes a 'ravishing cadenza.'” (Publishers Weekly)

“Those lucky enough to be familiar with Krasznahorkai’s work will recognize the breathless prose as nothing new from the author. His obsession with detail and process recalls Melville’s prose, while the page-long sentences bring to mind the stream-of-conscious modernism of Joyce or Faulkner. But there is a kind of damp, earthy darkness all of Krasznahorkai’s own that makes it hard to pin down an easy comparison. As a result, Seiobo There Below is not simple to read; it is often enormously dense, complex and difficult. But Krasznahorkai rewards patience generously.” (New York Daily News)

Enjoy the Journey...Not Necessarily the Destination
By W. Wilson
As a (broadly speaking) postmodernist "novel," 'Seiobo There Below' can be disorienting in a few places, but it's never opaque for mere effect. I first read "Ze'ami Is Leaving" from Music & Literature Issue 2. (The first few paragraphs of this particular story, the penultimate one in 'Seiobo,' are disorienting, but I "got" it after a few reads.) Krasznahorkai often disparages technology, faith in empirical observation, and the inexorable march of technological "progress." He criticizes capitalism and the influence of Western consumerism. However, he's also critical of the former Soviet Union's effect on the former Eastern Bloc nations, especially his native Hungary.

This is not a true novel in that characters do not overlap from chapter to chapter. Actually, there aren't chapters in the traditional sense. I'm inclined to think of 'Seiobo' as a collection of short stories with similar themes.

While there is more than one theme in the stories that make up 'Seiobo,' a main one is the difficulty of creating art: We witness the diurnal trials of a Noh mask-maker; a Renaissance painter struggles with what appears to be manic depression while creating a panel for an altar - especially fascinating to read because all of his materials are organic (e.g., he directs a carpenter to get the panel from a specific tree, his pigments are ground by his assistants); a landscape painter feels the urge to push the boundaries of his painting even while suffering crushing personal losses, all while trying to appear composed in the glare of the public eye.

For Krasznahorkai, not only is the making of art all too often a painful process, the characters in these stories find that going to see art is disappointing, bewildering, and at times even dangerous.

There are exceptions: One story deals with an unnamed visitor - likely Krasznahorkai himself channeling Thomas Bernhard - of Alhambra in Spain. I had not heard of Alhambra before reading this story; I've since read about this amazing palace/fortress. As a Westerner, most of the news I hear about Islam is negative, so it's refreshing to read about an age, however distant in time, in which Islam produced dazzling art and architecture. Another story deals with an "art retreat" in Eastern Europe and its mysterious visitor. This might be the best of the stories; I found it to be the most uplifting. Krasznahorkai can take you from the depths of wretchedness to high strangeness in just a few pages.

I'm not sure what to make of the book's final story, but I will say that if you're a fan of Krasznahorkai's writing in the project he worked on a few years ago with a German painter (whose name escapes me at the moment), you'll likely enjoy its visceral punch. It's the black bookend of a book that begins with white along a Japanese river.

When we read 'Seiobo There Below,' we're reading Ottilie Mulzet's translation. Because I don't know Hungarian, I'm unable to tell how "true" her translation is to the Hungarian 'Seiobo,' but I can say that this is masterful writing. I enjoy reading these stories; it's just that the questions they raise can be unsettling and depressing, with in my opinion too gloomy an outlook, that I've decided to give it four instead of five stars.

I would advise potential readers of 'Seiobo There Below' to avoid on-line reviews of the book - most of them have no spoiler warnings - until you've read it yourself. Look for interviews featuring Ottilie Mulzet, who has terrific insights into 'Seiobo.' And don't shy away from the paperbound version of this book over the convenience of the e-versions - for about $10 it's beautifully printed and bound, although regrettably there isn't a color tip-in section showing some of the art discussed within. You may, or may not, want to see some of the art from 'Seiobo There Below' in person. You'll have to decide.

If you are willing to put the time in, this can be one of the most rewarding reading experiences.
By William Shinevar
This is the third Krasznahorkai book I have read, so before you read on, it is safe to say that I already enjoy his writing. I read Satantango first, then Melancholy of Resistance(which is equally as good as this book), and finally this.

This book is less a novel and more a set of short stories ranging from 5 to about 50 pages all centered around the questions of what is art, how is it made, and how can we recognize that beauty. These are not simple questions and Krasznahorkai does not give simple answers either. Even in his stories, he takes examples from around the globe, focusing on Noh, Italian painting, music, and even nature. I found myself looking up many things, especially since I am not that educated in Japanese culture, but I felt that after a quick paragraph or two on wikipedia, I was educated enough to listen to the narrator's comments, which always showed the patience and consciousness required in art. This book shows that is also required in reading, or general aesthetic observation, as well.

One must work through his dense prose. Except for one chapter, most of his paragraphs, which are tens of pages at times, are one long sentence. Although difficult to get into, if one has a long time to read, after a while, you are sucked into the book and realize only when the chapter ends that two hours have gone by. If you enjoy Krasznahorkai, definitely read this. If you haven't read him yet, this is as good a starting place as any. If you want a more plot driven book(if I can call it that) by him, get Satantango, which is also wonderful, and if you want to see how that writing style has been honed by more than 20 years, return to this work later, one day, eventually.

The Rebuilding of the Lingual Shrine
By Saposcat
The slow reader I am, and all too busy, now as ever, I finished Seiobo at last, and I'm sad it's over because I loved every sentence of it, and somehow it still feels like it isn't over. I disagree with the idea I've read in a couple places that it is a mere collection of short stories. The novel is a novel proper, if not somehow even more of a piece than just a novel, by the tapestry of the language itself, for the intersections are far more deep-seated than in so-called "short story cycles" or "composite novels." Every phrase repeated, like the raising of an index finger, gave me goosebumps, epiphanic, more and more every time, true to its accumulative structure. Every sentence describes, no, every sentence is, the novel itself, yet the novel should be experienced as a whole, in order even to perceive but the smallest pieces in their rightful places. The book reminds me of Robert Smithson's piece "A Heap of Language." The novel becomes both metonymic and metaphoric at once. Always becoming, it never just is, never so complacent is it just to be, just to assert itself as being there, it even, probably more than not, questions that it is there at all, and the breaking of its implicit rules says so much and renders the pages open to the whole world.

It constructs its own rules as it goes on--the predominant mode being paragraphs pages at length containing a single sentence--and, not so perverse as to believe in itself alone, to become a slave to its own system, it breaks those rules too, and even those breaks are, and contain, the whole. When the short sentences in the Alhambra chapter arrive, they feel like epigraphs in stone, as heavy as any of the long-winded sentences: "For there is truth." "There is the Alhambra." "That is the truth." Another exception, "Something Is Burning Outside," at eight pages the second-shortest chapter and containing by far the most paragraphs and sentences, has a particularly beautiful character description: "He was thin, like a water bird, his shoulders stooped; bald-headed, in his frighteningly gaunt face two pure dark-brown eyes burned--two pure burning eyes, yet eyes notfrom an inner fire but merely reflecting back, like two still mirrors, that something is burning outside." Each chapter is a rebuilding of the pervious, as the Ise Shrine was in "Rebuilding of the Ise Shrine," and in accord with the instability of perspective in K's books, language itself becomes an object malleable: shrines of language built and collapsed before the next shrine, the next chapter. I have such an affinity for this whole book, I don't think I'll stop perusing it on occasion, pursuing new strains from old.

fascinating and useful relic
By Paulybrooklyn
This is an intriguing book for several reasons--first, it must pointed out that it contains some shocking statements about race that seem to be based on an odd hybrid of neoclassicism and social Darwinism. Skulls of different races (highly caricatured) are compared to Greek ideals using arcane measurements, and this becomes a springboard for a twisted argument about racial superiority that was, alas, probably quite maintstream during the 1920's. Additionally, many photographs of live models have been strangely doctored; the faces appear to have been painted over to resemble Greek classical sculpture, which, instead of looking beautiful, is rather grotesque... equally hideous (although understandable for the time) is the rubbing out of the models' genitals.

That being said, the anatomical plates are beautifully drawn and numerous, with a great deal of useful information. Unlike many other books, photographs of models in bended and tensed poses are compared with diagrams that show the muscles in those same positions, depicting their contracted and expanded states. Also, this is the ONLY anatomy book I've ever seen that compares male and female antatomy in any depth, showing differences in proportion and skeletal structure (with particular attention to the pelvis). These are elements that Elliot Goldfinger's otherwise beautiful book are sorely lacking. For those reasons, this is a key book for any serious figurative artist.

Very useful.
By Art Anatomy Student
I agree with Paulybrooklyn. If one is willing to look past certain anachronisms, this book will be very useful. I recommend this book to those who have already committed anatomy to memory -- those who desire more in-depth coverage on how the anatomy affects the topography of the body -- accounting for the differences in gender and body type. For those who have Eliot Goldfinger's book, this text is a great companion. Be prepared for slight differences in nomenclature (e.g tensor fasciae femoris = tensor fascia lata... internus=medialis etc.)

Absolutely Essential
By The Anatomist
I have several books on anatomy and this is one of the best written, clearest and most comprehensive books on the subject. I won't say this book is for the newbie. You have to be familiar with a fair amount of terminology, mostly muscle names and the skeleton. But the descriptions of body parts, their origins and insertions, their functions and surface forms--it's all here. The writing style is a little stilted by modern standards, but you have to remember it was written about a hundred years ago. Fortunately, most of what we know regarding artistic anatomy hasn't changed in 500 years. If you're familiar with Dr. Paul Richer's Artistic Anatomy (a great work in itself, especially the illustrated plates), this book has much of the same information, but less medical or scientific in approach. It's more accessible, easier to read and digest. The illustrations are very good. There are numerous photos of models, male and female in various poses, and often with accompanying flayed illustrations of the same pose, showing the position of different muscles. For propriety sake the genitals (male and female) have been air brushed. Of course, the outline of the scrotum was left on the male model to some comical effect. But all in all this is a great essential book. Highly recommended.

A Discourse by Three Drunkards on Government, by Nakae Chomin

ADiscourse by Three Drunkards on Government takesthe form of a debate between a spokesman for Western ideals of democracy andprogress, and an advocate for adherence to traditional samurai values. Theirdiscussion is moderated by the imperturbable Master Nankai, who loves nothingmore than to drink and argue politics. The fiction of the drinking bout allowedChomin to debate freely topical political issues, in a discussion that offersan astute analysis of contemporary European politics and a prophetic vision ofJapan's direction. This lucid and precise translation of a delightful work hasbeen designated one of the UNESCO series of classics of world literature.

About the Author
Nakae Chomin was one of Japan's seminal thinkers during the Meiji era (1868–1912), a time when the nation was attempting to leapfrog from feudalism into the modern world. The son of a low-ranking samurai family, Chomin (a pen name meaning "the masses") began his studies with the Chinese and Buddhist classics, later traveling to France where he studied political philosophy. After returning home he won a seat in Japan's first parliament, although he quickly resigned for reasons of conscience. Chomin's critical writings continually drew the ire of the government; he was often censured and at one point was sent into exile in Osaka. He nevertheless continued to write prolifically, despite poverty and illness, until his death in 1901.

Brief and revealing
By wiredweird
This short work, from the end of the 19th century, taught me a lot about Japan's course since then. Two disputants, under blanket amnesty granted by brandy, present supposedly opposing views. The first, in Western clothes, orates at length on democracy, personal freedom, education, world relations, and (of course) national wealth. The second, representing Japanese tradition, argues for military expansionism in order to attain a secure place in international politics and (of course) to attain national wealth.
I say supposed opposition - it seemd to me that the two were really discussing different aspects of the cultural identity. The master, in the end, advises modernization within reason and defensive armament within reason. Although his house set the stage for the other two and his point made the most sense, I found it the least interesting part of the text. The two extremes held my attention much more closely.
In retrospect, we can see that Japan has followed both courses. It armed heavily up to mid 20th century, and has since participated on an even footing with the major Western powers. This book seems have predicted both.
I don't know whether to file this little book closer to Confucius or Johnathan Swift - no matter, I welcome it to my library.

A Pre-war subversive missive which has excellent relevancy
By Amanojack
The Discourse here is an excellent pre-war subversive missive which will give significant insight to those who wish to understand the underlying internal soul-searching going on in Japan during the period between the arrival of Perry and the Black Ships until the modern soul-searching debate surrounding the essential illegality and absurdity of Article IX in the Japanese Constitution. The title itself should clue in the reader that this is definitely one of those books which like Voltaire and Machiavelli, got the author in quite a bit of trouble with the secret police for being too close to the truth for thier liking. The debate takes on a similar form to the traditional greek diatribes in that it is in the form of a conversation between master and seekers. However, the Discourse here is a conversation between the Master Power Drinker and two drinking buddies; The Lover of the Old and the Lover of the New. After the boys have had a few bottles of sake a piece, and are "full of thier cups" as it were, they are allowed to speak thier minds freely in the Japanese tradition as a Jester is with his cap. Hence, the drinking becomes a token of the true face of each of the debaters and the heated philosophical arguements that always insue after one has had enough to drink as to become loquatious, but not yet enough to slur one's words, yet what is said cannot be held against the speakers the next day as they try to sleep off thier hangovers. Anyone interested in the essential debate for the Japanese soul as Japan moved from a fuedal isolationist society to dreams of empire in complete immitation of the British and United States empires should certainly read this book.

A small minded western look at a liberal eastern religion.
By Ronald Albury
The title of this book would more appropriately be "The Saktas, A biased and predjudiced slamming". The author is constantly refering to tantric practices as "revolting" and "disgusting". The book was written by an early British colonialist, and its authorship is aparent in every sentence. I do not understandy why, if he felt this way, did he take the time to write the book.

A useful survey
By Mark R. Deering
This is a wothwhile survey of some literature that could have remained hidden otherwise. Some of the author's aesthetic judgments are lacking in the clinical objectivity that might be desired, but publication of a book like this in 1933 Britain may not have been possible otherwise. If you look past the rhetoric, you can learn something from this book.

Someone to Watch Over Me: A gripping psychological thriller, by Madeleine Reiss

She closed her eyes and then he was gone… A chilling psychological thriller for fans of BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, I LET YOU GO and SLEEP TIGHT.

When Carrie’s five-year old son, Charlie, disappeared on a Norfolk beach, her world was destroyed. Now, three years on, she is persuaded by her mother to visit a local medium. Initially sceptical, Carrie is blown away when he appears to reveal something about Charlie’s disappearance; something that nobody could ever have known except herself.

Single mum, Molly, is worried about her young son, Max, who has been having more of his little ‘accidents’ at school and has recently starting talking again to his imaginary friend.
Molly knows that Max’s problems stem from his very real anxieties about his father – a violent and unstable man – who they are now in hiding from.

Little do the women know that their worlds are about to converge – and both of them will have to face the thing they fear the most. But could the truth destroy them?

This is rich and compelling debut, for fans of After Anna and The Husband’s Secret.

A Powerful Debut
By MissMelvis
I should start a new line in one word book reviews - in this case that one word would be AMAZING!

Someone To Watch Over Me had me gripped from the start. It is the night before Carrie opens her new shop, Trove and we learn that Carrie is feeling a "familiar sadness". We're immediately taken back some years earlier when Carrie and her family go to the beach to make the most of a perfect summer day.

Whilst enjoying their time on the beach, Carrie's Son, Charlie spends some time with a young boy named Max. As the day goes on, Carrie drifts off to sleep and when she awakes, Charlie is nowhere to be seen.

We are then introduced to the boy Charlie met earlier, Max and his Mother, Molly. The two of them reside in their cosy Countryside home. Max's Father, Rupert no longer lives with them but is making regular, silent phone calls to their house.

We return to the beach in the moments that follow the discovery that Charlie is missing, which are fast-paced and gripping and so well described that you become a part of the search for Charlie and you can feel every inch of panic along with his heartbroken parents. Charlie isn't found and as darkness falls, Carrie and her Husband, Damian are forced to return home without him.

The story continues with the switching between the stories of the two families, and between the present and the past. Molly and Rupert are no longer together as Rupert has been violent towards Molly on many a past occasion. Carrie and Damian are also no longer together, unable to cope with the loss of their Son and with the uncertainty of what happened to him when he went missing. We are taken through Molly and Rupert's brutal relationship with Molly's efforts to cover up her Husband's behaviour and her feelings of not being able to talk to anyone about what happened. The feelings of despair entwined within Carrie and Damian's relationship are brought to the surface and we suffer their break up along with them.

Both of these ladies are now trying their best to move forward, to leave the scars of their pasts behind them. New homes, new friends and new relationships. Carrie's journey to discover what happened to her Son and Molly's efforts to protect both herself and Max from Rupert bring their two worlds together when suddenly, their paths cross once again and Max confides that he's been talking to Charlie. Their estranged Husband's reappear and both Carrie and Molly have to fight their pasts once more. Will they leave their pasts behind them and move on or will they find comfort in their history, with the Men they once loved?

Someone To Watch Over Me is a beautifully told story, Madeleine Reiss' descriptions bring each environment and every moment to life. We are carried along the seasons by the decorating of Trove, we are introduced to some great secondary characters in Carrie's friend and business partner, Jen, as well as her Mother and her neighbours (including the luscious Oliver) and we are encouraged to grasp every emotion going. This novel is tear-jerking, heartwarming, funny, tense and full of anticipation. I could not put this book down, I was completely absorbed in the lives of these characters as well as the wonderfully described surroundings.

My Rating 5/5 ~ A beautifully told and magnificently described story of loss and pain and the struggle to leave the past behind, especially when it has a way of coming back to haunt you. Someone To Watch Over Me will have you gripped from the start. This book does not mess around and throws you straight in at the deep end and you work your way through with the characters, discovering more about them and experiencing moments with them along the way. A true contender for Book of the Year and one of the most powerful debuts I've ever had the pleasure of reading. In a word, AMAZING!

Someone to Watch Over Me - Madeleine Reiss
By Reading for Pleasure (Bev)
Read this book and cannot say I was overly impressed with it.

Damian and their son Charlie are enjoying a day at the beach when the unthinkable happens. It's every parent's worst nightmare and was well portrayed. After the details of this have been set, the book then jumps and Carrie is coming to terms with the feelings etc of that terrible day.

The book then goes on to the side of Molly, a single mother bringing up her little son, Max, who was playing with Charlie that day on the beach.

The book then flits back and forth between these two characters along with others that come in and go out, detailing in some great depth the minor details of how the shop is laid out that Carrie runs along with the assistance that she gets etc, to the man over the road and various other bits that I didn't think had any relevance to the story of the missing boy.

The investigation into him disappearing seems to taper off and we have left with that unknown occurrence of whether he was snatched, swept to sea etc.

Charlie's involvement in this is another point that doesn't gel with me and as much as you can understand possibly his point of view, you end up thinking of him talking to an imaginary friend (as most kids usually have).

Overall not a book I was fond of, was glad that I had read this and read this for the book group - but not one I would recommend or read again.

Muddle of a Story with not a lot going for it
By Amazon Customer
The trouble with Someone to Watch Over Me is predictability. The event which is the starting point for the story is profound and tragic, but the story pretty much shys away from this thereafter - we are transported in time to a point where the aftermath is history and everyone has moved on with their lives. The concept were the victim of the previous tragedy is seemingly intervening to save another young victim from different circumstances just didn't grip me, it was told in a pedestrian way and the mix of improbable ghost story with a group of characters who had little to recommend them had very little going for it - afraid to say I was counting the Kindle percentage bar to get to the end.
