reference book for beginners and committed canners

A few years ago I came across the first edition of USDA's "Complete Guide to Home Canning and Preserving" in a second-hand bookshop. At the time I had zero experience with canning or preserving -- both of which seemed, to me, to be akin to alchemy. The USDA's guide contained all the information I need to get started, and answered many of my questions about the process, the 'science' and my options (such as added pectin vs. no added pectin in jams) I recently acquired this edition of the USDA's guide. It has all the strengths of the first guide, with a few changes to better suit most modern kitchens. Most notably is the listing of measurements using cups and spoons; as opposed to the weight measurements used in the first book. The USDA's guide also provides objective, practical information about selecting jars, canners, storage, ingredients etc. I now have a few books with fancy, tasty canning recipes, but I always use the USDA's Guide as reference . . .especially when purchasing equipment or creating my own recipes.

It's good, but....

This is the definitive guide for County/State fair entries in my area (Idaho) but frankly, the receipes in the Ball Blue Book (also available from Amazon.com) are much more palatable. If you're canning to win at the fair, use this book. If you're canning to EAT, use the Ball Blue Book! However, the canning TIMES should be followed in this guide for safety (they are usually the same as in the BBB). If Amazon doesn't have either of these titles, check with your county/state extension service. They will probably carry them.

Out of date. Significant changes made in 2009

This USDA publication has been updated in 2009 and the one for sale was published 1994. After the fact, I received UDSA, NIFA, Agriculture Information Bulletin No. 539 listing significant changes in every one of the seven sections pertaining to food safety &/or quality. This rendered the entire book unfit to use as a researched based reference. Knowing that the version I was purchasing was the 1994 version, and I did not realize the differences until after the book arrived, I ended up throwing out the book because I did not feel it was safe to even sell it at a yard sale. I have since acquired the 2009 version of the same book through my local County Extension Service Office.

Superb Drawings

Myself and many of my contemporaries at Disney animation back in the late 1970s and 80s used to fawn over the one copy that the Library had of this book (which was well worn by the generation that preceded us). It's great that this and other books about Gordon Grant are now being reproduced. For anyone who loves to draw and sketch this is a great resource. Mister Grant's economy of line, mastery of pen and ink and dynamic interpretation of human figures and ships at sea are graphic history of days gone by.

Nostalgic Look Back at the Yankee Whalers

Originally published in 1932, "Greasy Luck" is a nostalgic look back at the heyday of Yankee whaling in the 1850's. With sixty four full page illustrations and accompanying narrative, readers learn of great skill and daring needed to harpoon whales during the closing days of the Age of Sail. These carefully rendered pen and ink illustrations lovingly recreate a lost world. Gordon Grant was one great naval illustrators. For fans of this type of illustration be sure to check out the work of Grant's contemporary, the great British naval illustrator Peter Anson. Highly recommended.

"Greasy Luck" provides an informative view of American whaling during the late18th and early 19th centuries. The text is limited, but the artful sketches tell the story rather well.

If six stars were possible...

Van Gelder has written an extremely important and profoundly insightful book about the church. He has an excellent understanding of North American Christianity and the cultural temptations which have shaped the current models for church. He lays out a foundation for the church as a christ-centered missional community. This book is rich in theology and philosophy and leads the reader to very practical conclusions about how we might "do church" differently. This is not a step-by-step method for the average church to apply to its existing programs. In fact it raises paradigm-shifting questions that speak to very foundational issues regarding the nature and purpose of the Body of Christ. It is a must read.

Great Book

This book was a great read. I really enjoyed what was said and I think it is going to prove helpful in my ministry. The only complaint that I would have is that the author seems to skip around alot but that is only because the book covers alot of broad ground in 175 pages. However, the chapters on the Nature of the Church and the Ministry of the Church are worth the price of the book alone. All in all, this is a great book that everyone who wants to fulfill the Great Commission should read.

Missional Without the Baggage

This book should be required reading for every seminarian, pastor and church leader serving in the North American context. While the category label above the ISBN indicates that this book would be sorted amongst the hundreds of other “Church Life” books, Van Gelder has, in fact, provided us with a theological volume that roots the mission of church in the Scriptures. Building on this foundation, he seeks to compel the church to restore its underpinnings as the representatives and participants in God’s mission for the world.

The Missional movement has gained many adherents but has also suffered from some bad PR, often being lumped in with the Emergent Church. Where the latter is a distinctly postmodern phenomenon, the missional nature of the Church has been God’s design since the very beginning. Van Gelder takes a systematic approach to outlining this design and its application drawing directly from the Scripture. His methodology draws some criticism because it is not a how-to manual for implementing this design. Reading carefully to the end of the book points out the specific reason why the books outline and this expectation would be at odds; the local church by its very nature is context driven and dependent.

Both Hirsch and Van Gelder seek the same end, a church more aware of its missional calling. Where Hirsch can be more abstract in his thinking and application, Van Gelder writes a more concise and concrete theological work. Don’t pick up this book to look for a manual on how to make your church Missional. Do pick up this book to guide yourself and your staff through what God’s word says about your church being mission oriented.

First Love and The Diary of a Superfluous Man

The Diary of a Superfluous Man is a diary of a fictional 30 year old man written during the last two weeks of his life. The dying man, Tchulkaturin, is exceptionally introspective and obssessed with his sense of failure and inferiority. His heated sensibilities stifle his will. He was a particular type in Russian literature, especially hated by the reformers of the day. In their eyes, he made no social contribution--hence, the term "superfluous".
The Diary is not just a negative romp of a self-pitying aesthete. True, there's much complaints, hysteria, and sentimentality, but it's relieved by Tchulkaturin's amusing self-awareness. Likening himself to a useless fifth horse on a carriage, dragged along by life, he says, "But, thank goodness, the station is not far off." It was said that his birth was the "forfeit" his mother paid in the card game of life. Turgenev's ironic humor and relentless yet light-hearted social criticism add sharp levity.
Tchulkaturin supports his self-assessment as superfluous with the "folly" of his life, a failed three week love affair which he claims was his only happiness. Through this vehicle Turgenev explores the themes of love, passion, illusion and will versus weakness, which is also the focus of the companion story, First Love.
Tchulkaturin remembers bliss and humiliation, but he did take action. We see that no one wants to be rescued from passion, not even Tchulkaturin. Does it matter whether he reached his goal? The townspeople eventually esteemed him--perhaps he did make a social contribution and wasn't, afterall, a superfluous man. Irony upon irony and no answers.
In his small room, confronting death, Tchulkaturin realizes that none of the pathetic facts of his life matter. Yet he laments he has "gained sense" too late. He sees what things have had meaning for him. No matter how small, he wants to hold onto them--he wants to live. The tragedy is that Tchulkaturin is universal, not superfluous. He, like most of us, come to realize that it is part of the human condition to feel that happiness and life seem to have hardly begun when nearly over.
At the end of the diary, after Tchulkaturin has died, Turgenev adds another ironic touch that doubles as a social comment and as a device to force the infinitely unvarnished and necessary view that life goes on however it will, regardless of how we may think we have lived.
First Love is the story of an adolescent who falls in love with the same woman as his father. It sensitively portrays the transformation of a child to a young man, precipated by his first passion. The unusual triangle intensifies the suspence as we wonder how the son will find out who his rival is--he knows there is one. His inevitable realization deepens his emotional life and his understanding of the complexities of human life.
The story has an episodic structure from which the poetry and drama effortessly unfold, showing the son's growing love and helpless flip-flopping from child to man.The parlor games portentuously hint at the untold subplot. No character is wasted. Each has a distinct purpose for plot development and highlighting the boy's predicament.
Turgenev's incomparable nature depictions have such a clarity of vision that vivid and penetrating images automatically arise in the mind's eye whether he uses them to symbolically presage events or to reflect a character's emotional state. Or, Turgenev can use his visions of the expansive beauty of nature in opposition to the character's emotional condition to distance us from it to show human insignifcance in the face of the vastness of existence.
The pairing of The Diary with First Love is good. Each is a meditation on life, love and death. The juxtaposition of the two love stories, the neurotic dying man, the intelligent, passionate young son, and the powerful, archetypal father stimulate profound thought: How should life be lived--passionately or safely? Why to we cling to life so, no matter how we perceive it? Who decides whose life is superfluous and whose is meaningful? What are the criteria? Is any life meaningful? Does it matter how we have lived if we can discard our regrets and wonder at the paradoxical smallness and greatness of life? Is any significance we attach to life a mere crutch to face life or a crutch to face death? Each rereading of the stories reveals more perspectives and more layers of meaning.

19th-century Russian literature is sufficiently striking to make him a national archetype. He is
usually an aristocrat, intelligent, well-educated, and informed by idealism and goodwill but
incapable, for reasons as complex as Hamlet's, of engaging in effective action.

In his great autobiography, Memoirs of a Superfluous Man, Albert Jay Nock meant that he was
superfluous because his ideas, particularly his belief in freedom, had become so outmoded at the time
he was writing--the 1940s. But the original superfluous men were Russian nobles, who led utterly
meaningless lives of leisure, while peasants worked their land, servants took care of them, and
autocratic government mostly ignored them. They were felt to be superfluous because they had so
little to do and made so little contribution to Russian culture. For the most part though, they were
treated, in literature anyway, as kind of tragic heroes, as Russian Hamlets.
Thus, in Ivan Turgenev's novella, The Diary of a Superfluous Man, the young protagonist,
Tchulkaturin, humiliates himself in a romantic entanglement and a resulting duel, all the while
conveying the sense that there's nothing else really left for him to do with himself. Turgenev's
portrayal of this hopeless character combines tragicomedy with social criticism, but it is certainly more
sympathetic than not.
As always, Turgenev is the most accessible of Russian authors; the Constance Garnett translation is
very readable; and it is blessedly short. Even if you're, understandably, intimidated by Russian
novelists, you'll enjoy it.

Gilbert's Magnet-Compass thesis- expanding his notes.

I always knew Gilbert was the foremost Earth's magnetic inventor.. as
a Consultant to His Queen. and his importance to the British Navy..
and how he guided Ocean explorer's to maximize Compass usages.

There are myiad nuances in his Writings, used by World-wide sailors.

I also knew that Gilbert showed not just North-South normal magnetic alignments, but that he got N-to-N & S-to-S alignments, which many engineers today don't appreciate. He showed (Not in writings in this Book) 'Whoops'-but elsewhere that when he extended a magnetic field beyond critical lengths, that the filings pattern proved to him that the N-N[-S-S poles flip.. much like Tesla wound his T.Coils, with some reversals in the Center for his 1900 Patents to send Wireless Electricity.. then using Caduceus /Bifilar windings. Gilbert's words of magnet's rotating towards the Poles, but not moving in space to the poles, explained to Tesla how he envisioned rotating magnetic fields based upon the Sun, in Polyphased motors!

An improved translation is now available

This is not the best available science translation of Gilbert's 'De Magnete' as it does leave some of Gilbert's latin terms untranslated and some others mistranslated. A better version is the 2015 translation 'On The Magnet' by Vincent Wilmot, which helps clarify Gilbert's actual 'Magnetical Science' or 'Attraction Physics' that certainly helped Newton develop his physics at Hooke's prompting and probably helped Kepler develop his astronomy.

Partial synopsis

Condemnation of the past. "What business have I in that vast ocean of books? ... By the more silly ones among them the crowd and most impudent people get intoxicated [and] declare themselves to be philosophers ... [But] neither Greek arguments nor Greek words can assist in finding truth." (Preface)

Examples of "old-womanish" (p. 6) theories. "For example, they asserted that a loadstone rubbed with garlic does not attract iron; nor when it is in the presence of a diamond. The like of this is found in Pliny and Ptolemy's Quadripartitum; and errors have steadily been ... accepted---even as evil and noxious plants ever have the most luxuriant growth---down to our day, being propagated in the writings of many authors who, to the end that their volumes might grow to the desired bulk, do write and copy all sorts about ever so many things about which they know naught for certain in the light of experience." (I.I, pp. 2-3).

The same refuted by experiment. "[The claim regarding diamonds] is contrary to our magnetic rules; and hence we made the experiment ourselves with seventy-five diamonds in presence of many witnesses ... yet never was in granted to me to see the effect mentioned" (III.XIII, p. 218).

This being an exception. Gilbert discussed the case of the diamonds because it happened to serve his purposes exceptionally well, not because he was determined to refute all false theories. Theories he did not feel like refuting he was happy to "leave for roaches and moths to pray upon" (II.III, p. 104).

"That the globe of the earth is magnetick." The primary evidence being that the behaviour of a compass needle in various places around the earth is precisely mirrored by its behaviour in the vicinity of a spherical loadstone. Even the compass' deviations from perfect north can be accounted for on this theory. For the earth is not perfectly spherical, and if one cuts out "oceans" in the spherical loadstone one finds that the needle deviates towards the "continents," as in reality (IV.II).

Astrology tacitly approved. This in an analogy regarding how "smelted iron" is magnetised by the earth's magnetic field. "For as when the babe is given forth to the light from the mother's womb and gains the power of respiration and certain animal functions, and as the planets and other heavenly bodies, according to their positions in the universe and according to their configuration with the horizon and the earth, do then impart to the new-comer special and peculiar qualities; so a piece of iron, while it is being wrought and lengthened, is affected by the general cause, the earth, to wit; and while it is coming back from the fiery state to its original temperature it becomes imbued with a special verticity according to its position." (III.XII, p. 216).

Earth's rotation, planetary motion caused by magnetism (Book VI). This theory is quite worthless and does not use the previously developed magnetic theory in any meaningful way.

About the Author
Born in in London in 1921, Mary was educated at Haberdashers' Aske's Girls School, Acton. During the Second World War she served in the Women's Royal Naval Service (Wrens) attached to the Fleet Air Arm Meteorology branch and then briefly with the Signal Section in Plymouth. Writing was in her blood. Juggling her work as a local government officer in Middlesex Education Department with writing, at first short stories for magazines and pieces for The Times Educational Supplement, she then had her first book, The Winter City, published in 1961. The book was a success and enabled Mary to relinquish her full time occupation to devote her time to writing. Even so, when she came to her beloved Lewes in 1961, she still took a part-time appointment, as a secretary, with the East Sussex Educational Psychology department. Equally, she was an enthusiastic supporter of Lewes Little Theatre, where she found her role as 'prompter' the most satisfying, and worshipped at the town's St Pancras RC Church.

After playing piano for a long time, I have finally discovered a wonderful woman composer. The music is great and not too difficult to play if you are a medium to good pianist. A wonderful discovery.

It's is quite wonderful that one can download almost 200 year piano music written by a woman!... but, with the small notes which can be manipulated only slightly by the font key, it is very difficult to read and/or play at the piano on a laptop, let alone a kindle.

great resource book

I bought this book a few years ago, and i would buy it today. the color plates are wonderful to look at, and the units depicted are varied. The only drawback is the lack of campaign uniforms in the latter half of the book.

But not before 1846

Yes, this is a very colorful and informative book for US Army uniforms from the Mexican-American War on. It was, however, based on a series of color plates released by the War Department in the late 19th century, before the concept of modern research. The plates for the War of 1812 are inaccurate and don't even follow the Army's uniform regulations published in 1812 and 1813. Certainly the French style shako with eagle plate is completely wrong, US infantry prior to 1813 wearing a similar shako, but with different cords and no plate. From 1813 to 1819, the infantry wore the "tombstone" shake, similar to the Portuguese shako of 1809, with a large and then small plate. As far as the War of Independence, the errors there are from the lack of study into the actual clothing issued and those regulations that were published such as those of 1778. Very few American regiments had lace or tape around their button holes. And the "Tarleton" helmet was probably quite rare even into 1783. The best study of the uniforms of the US armed forces was done by Rene Chartrand, and for the War of Independence, start with Leffert's seminal book and go to the Osprey series for further illustrated history.

The book is short on text but if a picture is worth a 1000 words, this one is a virtual encyclopedia of Amry uniform and equipment history. Excellen quality paper and printing. A great reference source.
