Some Thoughts Concerning Education: (Including Of the Conduct of the Understanding) (Dover Philosophical Classics), by John Locke

In the influential essays included in this volume, the renowned English philosopher John Locke (1632-1704) advocated a more "modernized" course of education. Focusing on the curriculum, the stimulation of children's interests and imagination, and the function of play, he showed how to instill virtue and morality in children, rather than merely pumping them full of information and facts.
From the ineffectiveness of physical punishment to the best methods of teaching foreign languages and table manners, these essays comprise an enlightened view of childhood and education that revolutionized educational theory. Locke stressed the teaching of rational thinking, moral dependability, and social grace in the classroom, with the aim of helping students to not only reflect but take action.
Locke's writings on education are enlightening reading for philosophy students, teachers, and for anyone interested in educational reform.

Link from the Essay to the Two Treatises
By John P. Irish
This is an outstanding volume from one of the most important thinkers of Western civilization. This is a bridge linking the two major classics from Locke, An Essay concerning Human Understanding and the Two Treatises of Government. In this volume, we see Locke's dependence on Stoic philosophy (especially that of Seneca) and the effect that Aristotelian philosophy had on him.
"As the Strength of the Body lies chiefly in being able to endure Hardships, so also does that of the Mind. And the great Principle and Foundation of all Vertue and Worth, is . . . That a Man is able to deny himself his own Desires, cross his own Inclinations, and purely follow what Reason directs as best, tho' that appetite lean the other way." And how does one do this? Locke's answer is through education (i.e., through habit).
Anyone wishing to understand the thought and philosophy of Locke, can not afford to ignore this volume in the corpus of Lockean writings. This edition is a very scholarly edition, there is another modern edition available as well. To bad the editors of the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke are not very organized, at the rate these volumes are being produced, the complete writings will not be available during my lifetime.
The world needs a modern edition of the writings of Locke, he is too important a thinker not to have this - if nothing else, for us inspiring Lockean scholars. :o)

Surprisingly modern in almost every respect - a delight to read
By Graham H. Seibert
This is amazingly accessible for a book written 320 years ago. A small bit of his vocabulary is archaic, and his delivery is more wordy than is common in modern prose. Still, today's reader will find interest in the ideas, not just the book's place in history.

To place him in history, Locke's life spanned the last three quarters of the 17th century. He followed the scientific revolution initiated by Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton, whom he admired, and the philosopher Thomas Hobbes. An early philosophe, he predated Burke, Hume, Voltaire and Rousseau by about a century.

While Locke was a doctor, certainly the worst advice in the book has to do with medicine. Although the scientific revolution had begun, it had not progressed to the point of evidence-based theories of disease. As one example, Locke proposes that his upper-class readers put their children in thin cloaks and shoes, so they will be toughened by exposure to cold. No thought of isolating them from bugs.

Fully half of the book used dedicated to the moral and ethical formation of a child. He discourses at length on what to do about children who lie, daydream, are cruel to animals, are querulous (froward), inattentive, rude, bashful and otherwise imperfectly formed in character. He is very classic in his view that one must educate the whole child. In fact, he only gets around to talking about academic subjects in the last fifth of the book, opening with the quote " Learning. -- You will wonder, perhaps, that I put learning last, especially if I tell you I think it the least part."

Before getting to academics, he addresses dancing, which he believes is useful to a child in many ways; music, which he thinks is not worth the considerable time it takes to master; drawing, which he thinks is a skill every gentleman should possess; swimming, which is salubrious for the health and can save your life; fencing and horseback riding, which are essential gentlemanly skills.

Young children need to learn how to read and write. It is important that they learn naturally. Being forced to learn can sour the experience for them and get their whole academic career off to an unfortunate start. Children should be surrounded by reading and writing, and be led to exercise them for pleasure.

In this context, children should not be asked to read texts that are beyond their appropriate level of difficulty, or that are foreign to the child's natural interests. He specifically says that any attempt to read the Bible in order would be seriously misplaced. Children should be taught the essential Bible stories such as the story of creation, Abraham and Isaac, Joseph in Egypt, Daniel in the lion's den and so forth in a simple form and in such a way that they tell a moral. In other words, children should be familiar with the Bible as a cultural touchstone of Christian society.

Locke was surprisingly modern in his religious views. Rather like the philosophes who followed him and the deists who established the American government, he thought that the Christian religion was a good thing even though he says that there are some items of faith that simply cannot bear scientific investigation. Familiar with gravity from Newton's work, he posited that the great flood might have been caused by a shift in the Earth's center of gravity. But he quickly says that this is the kind of inquiry we ought not to undertake; there is a clear divide between the worlds of natural science and religion, and we make a mistake if we confound the two.

Then on to academics. Foreign languages are important in the measure that a person will use them in life. That is saying, the ability to speak a living language is a considerable asset. Knowledge of grammar, he believed, is not nearly so important. Latin is not worth the time that was usually given to it in his age, and Greek is important only for the professional scholar.

Locke believed the geography and history were very important. He also believed, contrary to my experience with modern students, that they are intrinsically interesting. He believed that every person should master arithmetic, geometry, and rhetoric. Memorizing long passages in foreign languages, however, and writing poetry he characterizes as fruitless wastes of time, the development of life skills that are simply not remunerative for most people.

Concluding his advice on academics, Locke went on to say that the child should be familiar with the manual skills, the crafts such as carpentry, gardening and the like. He advocated that learning manual skills is essential in mental development. He recommended that a child learn bookkeeping, inasmuch as he would someday be in the position of managing an estate.

The whole book is written with a great sense of humanity. Locke treats the child as an adult in the process of formation, fully worthy of dignity, not to be beaten or dominated in any way for any purpose other than character development. Locke supports corporal punishment, but only as a last resort, only when authorized by the father, and only upon occasion, to reinforce a specific instruction. His philosophy is quite consistent with the practice in American schools even through the 1960s or 1970s, when Benjamin Spock was ascendant, until the principle of individual responsibility faded as therapeutic schools of child rearing became ascendant. Put another way, Locke believed firmly in free will. Every child is a moral actor, responsible for his own actions, and it is the responsibility of the parent to develop that moral character.

I leave it to other reviewers to recite the ways in which Locke's views tie out to those of Aristotle and his other philosophical precursors. To me the news is in how well he outlined the path going forward from his era into our own.

Absolutely awful.
By Jonathan Henner
I bought this thinking the table of contents would be nice. Well, it was nice but the formatting of the book is entirely unprofessional. It looks as if someone simply copied and pasted a tabled word document into an Amazon kindle publishing app.

Worse of all - no page numbers. Locations are useless when a syllabus asks one to read x and y pages starting from page z.

A Shropshire Lad (Dover Thrift Editions), by A. E. Housman

Few volumes of poetry in the English language have enjoyed as much success with both literary connoisseurs and the general reader as A. E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad, first published in 1896. Scholars and critics have seen in these timeless poems an elegance of taste and perfection of form and feeling comparable to the greatest of the classic. Yet their simple language, strong musical cadences and direct emotional appeal have won these works a wide audience among general readers as well.
This finely produced volume, reprinted from an authoritative edition of A Shropshire Lad, contains all 63 original poems along with a new Index of First Lines and a brief new section of Notes to the Text. Here are poems that deal poignantly with the changing climate of friendship, the fading of youth, the vanity of dreams — poems that are among the most read, shared, and quoted in our language.

The great Housman's most famous collection here gets the facsimile treatment. The slim volume contains the complete text plus a scholarly introduction and a bibliography of related works. Though pricey, this is a gorgeous little edition.

Review
Housman is a high-water mark of British lyric poetry, and this fine production captures perfectly his strong, melodic beat and decisive rhyme, and his wonderful way with words. Samuel West's cultivated Midlands accent may not be specifically Shropshire, but his voice and reading are true to Housman who was not, after all, some rough Shropshire lad himself but an Oxford don. His Loveliest of Trees, the Cherry Now and To an Athlete Dying Young are beautifully rendered here. West, you feel, reads poetry as it should be read confidently, with ease and conviction, as if all the world spoke in meter and rhyme. --D.A.W., AudioFile Magazine

ghost-like remembrances of forgotten way of life.
By darragh o'donoghue
the title of 'A Shropshire Lad' indicates both rural specificity and human universality, and it is in the gap between the two that the poems' tension and tragedy lie. they evoke a timeless pastoral world, of streams, plains and roses; of ploughing, carousing and love-making; of villages, churches and football; all belonging to the unchanging cycle of the seasons. In this context man as a type, as a member of a community, is eternal also, not least in the folk idiom in which Housman's classical clarity is decaptively cloaked.
as an individual, however, the 'lad' is insubstantial, doomed to leave or die as rural life continues unchanging without him. Many of the poems are narrated by exiles or ghosts, crushed to find the old routine the same as if they had never existed - the phantom of 'Is my team ploughing?' discovers even his grieving sweetheart now warm in his interlocutor's bed; he of 'Bredon Hill' plans his wedding, only to attend his own funeral.
Housman uses a direct and simple vocabulary and metre with devastating resonances, the very music of the poetry at once rooted in the eternal communal land and yet indicative of sadness and loss. Written in 1896, the irony of death and change in the never-ending countryside was doubled by the reality that the countryside was changing, that the centuries-old lifestyles were being encroached on by industry and modernity - what seemed to be inviolable itself becomes obsolete. in hindsight, a third, poignant irony is added - within 20 years of publication, these lads would be sent to the slaughter in World War One, as previsioned in 'On the idle hill of summer'. One of Housman's greatest admirers, the composer George Butterworth, who wrote two song-cycles based on these beautiful poems, would be one such victim.

Easy, entertaining reading
By A Customer
Housman is one of those very popular poets that are looked down by your English professor as being low brow and unfit for the elect. If you're the type who claims to belong to these elite, good luck for your choice of a sour life, you should never be caught with this book.
Everybody else, dip in, the water is just fine.
In Housman's poetry, there is sense, and ideas you can understand on first reading. Moreover, there are rare qualities you seldom see nowadays - rhyme, rhythm, correct grammar, proper punctuation, and words spelled so you can confirm from any English dictionary that they were used right.
Be warned however that Housman's themes are repetitious (probably explains why he never wrote much poetry - perhaps he realized he is beginning to sound like a broken record even for the little poetry he was able to write), mostly about the transitoriness of youth and the tender sadness of death. Reading him too much too often is like listening to the greatest hits collection of a minor singer - after the third song, you get tired. But you did enjoy the first two.
When I first bought this book in April 2000, the list price was only $1.00 and Amazon's price was 80c. It was good value then even for someone living in Asia. Now that there's a special surcharge, I guess it's just good value if shipping cost is minimized.
For your money, however, try to find the old edition with line drawings. That was the first time I read Housman, and the line drawings realy enhanced the haunting loneliness of the sad poems.

A great poet who offers perfect gems in slender volumes
By L. E. Cantrell
Recently, I was appalled to discover that the top one hundred hits under the heading "A. E. Housman" do not disclose a single volume of his collected poetry to be in print, save for a ridiculously overpriced and bloated scholarly edition of interest only to plodding, dry-as-dust, doctoral candidates. This is a disgraceful state for one of the great poets of the turn of the Twentieth Century, one who in his miniaturist way was a peer of Elliott and Pound.

Alfred Edward Housman was born in 1859. At Oxford, he was universally regarded as a high-flyer, an odds-on favorite to win a "First in Greats." All went well until his final term in 1881, when he crashed and burned during a disastrous final examination. Not only did he fail to get his "First," he managed to get his degree only after months of delay, and that was a lowly, utterly undistinguished "pass".

Housman was, to say the least, not loquacious about his life. What seems to have happened was that he fell hopelessly, eternally, absurdly, romantically in love with one of his roommates, a stolidly athletic young man named Moses Jackson. Jackson, alas for Housman's hopes, proved to be inconveniently and irredeemably straight. Not long before the final examinations, Housman apparently declared his passion for Jackson, who seems politely, even kindly to have said something on the order of "No, thanks." In cricket terms, Housman was "hit for six" and he never recovered to the day he died.

Housman's expectations of an academic career went down in flames along with his "First." He slunk away from Oxford to work in the Patent Office, where--surprise, surprise--Jackson was also working, although the latter drew a higher salary because of his better degree. For ten years Housman toiled in these unfertile fields while on the side he contributed learned articles on classical subjects to the leading scholarly journals.

Such was the brilliance of the man that in 1892 he was unprecedentedly plucked directly from the academic sterility of the Patent Office to become Professor of Latin at London University College. In 1911, he moved up a very large notch to become a professor at Cambridge, a very unusual thing, then, for an Oxford man. He remained at Cambridge, recognized as one of the jewels in the University's crown, until he died.

Housman remained quietly attached to Jackson, even through Jackson's marriage and after he moved thousands of miles away to live in Vancouver, British Columbia (where I am writing this). Housman became the godfather for one of Jackson's children. When Jackson was on his deathbed in 1923, Housman rushed to him a copy of his second book of poetry, "Final Poems," so that Jackson might read it in his last hours. Jackson, of course, was the unnamed subject of some of the poems in that book, just as he had been in Housman's first, "A Shropshire Lad."

After Housman's death in 1936, his younger brother, the novelist Laurence Housman, rummaged through his papers and from them published the third slender volume of Housman' poetry, "More Poems."

Housman was not prolific. He seems to have worked in short, intense spurts of creativity no more than three or four times in his life. He devoted far more time and effort to his life-long magnum opus, a multi-volume critical edition and study of Manilius, a late Roman poet of truly breathtaking obscurity, dullness and unimportance. Housman appears to have had the very last word on Manilius, largely because it is hard to conceive that anyone else would care enough to add another. Housman's lasting fame rests on just three slender volumes of poetry, respectively 96, 71 and 66 pages in length.

Housman is the bard of tiny, perfect, miniatures. He is always formal in structure. One critic quite acutely called him the last Roman poet. There are no sprawling epics in him, hardly any smiling pastorals. He writes in a fit of sustained and remarkably entertaining depression, a poetic equivalent of film noir.

Here is Housman the Roman, writing of Britain's standing army of regular soldiers, all but destroyed in 1914:

These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.
("Last Poems," XXXVII)

Here is Housman in gaudily Romantic despair:

The Queen of air and darkness
Begins to shrill and cry,
"O young man, O my slayer,
To-morrow you shall die."

O Queen of air and darkness,
I think `tis truth you say,
And I shall die to-morrow;
But you will die today.
("Last Poems," III)

And here is Housman in his first and most famous volume of poetry, "A Shropshire Lad":

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
`Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;

Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free.'
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.

When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
`The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
`Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.'
And I am two-and-twenty,
And oh, `tis true, `tis true.
("A Shropshire Lad," XIII)

"A Shropshire Lad" was first published in 1896. "When I was one-and-twenty" was written in January 1895, at which time Housman was thirty-five and a professor of Latin. When Housman was twenty-one, though, he was an undergraduate at Oxford and sharing space with Moses Jackson. Despite the warnings he must have heard, he gave his heart away, no use to talk to him. When he was two-and-twenty, he paid with sighs a plenty and examination's rue, and oh, `twas true, `twas true.

Housman was a great poet in a small package. Grab anything of his that you come across. He'll make it worth your while.

Full five stars / For many a rose-lipt maiden / And many a lightfoot lad.

Border Games: Policing the U.S.-Mexico Divide (Cornell Studies in Political Economy), by Peter Andreas

The U.S.-Mexico border is the busiest in the world, the longest and most dramatic meeting point of a rich and poor country, and the site of intense confrontation between law enforcement and law evasion. Border control has changed in recent years from a low-maintenance and politically marginal activity to an intensive campaign focusing on drugs and migrant labor. Yet the unprecedented buildup of border policing has taken place in an era otherwise defined by the opening of the border, most notably through NAFTA. This contrast creates a borderless economy with a barricaded border.

In the updated and expanded second edition of his essential book on policing the U.S.-Mexico border, Peter Andreas places the continued sharp escalation of border policing in the context of a transformed post-September 11 security environment. As Andreas demonstrates, in some ways it is still the same old border game but more difficult to manage, with more players, played out on a bigger stage, and with higher stakes and collateral damage.

From Library Journal
In recent years, the United States and Mexico significantly liberalized trade regulations via the NAFTA treaty while also increasing the policing of the border area to stop the smuggling of people, drugs, and illegal goods. Andreas (Drug War Politics: The Price of Denial) argues that this contradiction serves less to prevent smuggling than to provide a stage for both America and Mexico to reaffirm national identities by demonstrating the ability to protect borders. Individuals in both countries use smuggling and illegal immigration for political gain, while neither nation does much to diminish the demand for drugs or the low-cost labor of illegal aliens. The author provides an excellent overview of the topic of smuggling and makes interesting comparisons between U.S.-Mexico border control and policing in Eastern and Southern Europe. This well-written work adds to the social and cultural focus provided in David Spener and Kathleen Staudt's The U.S.-Mexico Border: Transcending Divisions, Contesting Identities (Lynne Rienne Pub.,1998). From Booklist
At a time when economic globalization is seen opening borders throughout the world, the boundary enforcement has intensified along the longest border between a rich and poor country, the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Andreas, a political science professor, maintains that the U.S.-Mexico border is no more threatened now than in the past but that more attention has been focused on border enforcement because of changes in economic and social forces in the U.S. Fear of job loss to immigrants and increased demand on social services for illegal immigrants, from health care to education, as well as concerns about illegal drug trafficking are behind the rising border tensions. But the changing U.S. political climate, with more emphasis on law and order, is a major factor. Andreas offers a broad overview of smuggling immigrants and drugs into the U.S. from Mexico and intensified enforcement efforts. He also examines how border enforcement impacts trade relations with Mexico. On a broader scale, Andreas looks at international trends in smuggling and border enforcement in Europe. Vanessa Bush

Review

"At a time when economic globalization is seen opening borders throughout the world, the boundary enforcement has intensified along the longest border between a rich and poor country, the border between the U.S. and Mexico. Andreas offers a broad overview of smuggling immigrants and drugs into the U.S. from Mexico and intensified enforcement efforts. On a broader scale, Andreas looks at international trends in smuggling and border enforcement in Europe."―Booklist (reviewing the first edition)

"An engaging and readable book. . . . This slim volume is recommended for all levels."―Choice (reviewing the first edition)

"Border Games provides an in-depth and comparative analysis of the border policies. . . Required reading for anyone with an interest in U.S.-Mexico relations and the American West."―Jeff Biggers, The Bloomsbury Review (reviewing the first edition)

"This outstanding book is a much-needed addition to the literature on the policing of international boundaries. Because it is so well written and concise, it fits beautifully into political geography curricula at the undergraduate as well as at the graduate level. Hopefully the book will inspire geographers to take up questions similar to those that Peter Andreas has so capably interrogated."―Joseph Nevins, The Professional Geographer (reviewing the first edition)

"The difficulty in policing a complex border like that between the United States and Mexico, specifically stemming the flow of illegal drugs and immigration, demonstrates, according to Peter Andreas's insightful and pathbreaking analysis, the challenge associated with globalization, diminished sovereignty, and economic integration between developed and developing countries. . . . Andreas's insightful and rigorous study is an important contribution to the literature on globalization and transnational illicit trade."―Frank O. Mora, American Political Science Review (reviewing the first edition)

"Border Games is a penetrating analysis that not only exposes the hypocrisy of U.S. border policy in devastating detail, but explains why border enforcement has become a political necessity in the core nations of a rapidly globalizing economy. It is required reading for any serious student of the politics of immigration."―Douglas S. Massey, Dorothy Swaine Thomas Professor, University of Pennsylvania (reviewing the first edition)

"With analytical skill, political savvy, empirical rigor, comparative insight and a keen sense of paradox, Peter Andreas explores a fascinating aspect of U.S. relations with Mexico today: that while state control of legal trade has been greatly relaxed and the border opened, there has been a simultaneous effort to make the border seem more closed to illegal flows of narcotics and people."―Abraham F. Lowenthal, University of Southern California (reviewing the first edition)

"This fascinating and thoughtful book should be read by every citizen, policymaker, scholar, and student seeking to understand how the United States has so artfully managed to import the illegal drugs and undocumented workers its consumers and employers demand, while its government gets credit for eye-catching but ineffective campaigns to control the U.S. border with Mexico. Peter Andreas has caught the underside of the NAFTA paradox perfectly."―John H. Coatsworth, Harvard University (reviewing the first edition)

Good but outdated - don't be fooled by the second edition
By joey
This is a very good book in many regards, BUT there has been no effort to update any of the material other than a so so chapter added to the end. The book is full of statements like, "It is expected that in 2001 there will be..." If you want a good analytical discussion of the border in the 1990's this is your book. If you are looking for something current, try something else.

Very good book

The book was written a few years ago, but its arguments remain current. A last chapter was written in this new edition to incorporate the post 9-11 world. If you are interested in learning factual and not political arguments about the reality of our borders, grab this book and study it.

Great read

This book really gives a different view to the policing on the Mexican Border and how the United States has evoked many of the events that lead to the consequences we are now dealing with. The author has many resources and is very credited.

Mission-style architecture and furniture, popular in this country shortly after the turn of the century, was an offshoot of the 19th-century English Arts and Crafts Movement. Deploring machine-age artificiality, Mission furniture sought to blend beauty, simplicity, and utility in an organic unity. Today, Mission-style furniture is enjoying a renascence among craftspeople who admire its unpretentious charms.
Among the most appealing areas of Mission craftsmanship are lamps and shades. Constructed of wood, copper, brass, and a variety of art glass, they offer delightful period ambiance for home or apartment, and a satisfying project for do-it-yourselfers. This book, an unabridged republication of a popular 1911 manual, offers eighteen complete designs for authentic Mission-style lamps and shades. Written by an expert in clear, straightforward language, this concise handbook shows you how to make droplights, reading lamps, chandeliers, desk lights, dome lamps, and other attractive lighting fixtures.
No elaborate equipment is required. Most of the tools needed will be found in the average home workshop or are easily obtainable. Authentic turn-of-the century Mission Designs
By R. Wright
This book is a collection of actual Popular Mechanics magazine projects to make Mission style lamps that were originally published in the twenties. However, some techniques presented are outdated, but the daigrams for the proportions and measurements of the lamps and shades are the real jewel here. Some of the instructions are slightly vague and at times a bit hard to follow. But the measurements and proportions are what give true Mission style its appeal and elegance, and these are straight forwardly presented.

For what's here, it's worth the price.

This is a good basic book for those looking for information on mission style lamps. Other reviewers have noted dimensions for actually constructing the some of the projects are contradictory. I would use this more as a cncept/style book from which to develop my own more contemporary version plans.

The ancient Egyptians were avid model makers. Many of their miniature masterpieces were replicas of boats, lovingly handcrafted from the finest woods and often decorated with rich materials such as ivory. Amazing examples of Egyptian maritime art and technology, many of these models remain intact today, displayed and admired in museums and private collections centuries after they were masterfully crafted.
Concise, authoritative, and easy to follow, this unique guide shows modern shipwrights how to build three ancient Egyptian boat models following the same expert techniques used by craftsmen thousands of years ago. A beginner's skill level is all that's needed to expertly construct the royal sailing ships of King Khufu (ruled ca. 2551–2528 B.C.), Queen Hatshepsut (ruled ca. 1479–1458 B.C.) and the great Ramses II (ruled ca. 1279–1213 B.C.). Learn how to select the proper wood and gather the appropriate tools and materials. Follow simple guidelines for every aspect of construction, from hull to sails to rowing oars—even building the display stand. Replicate the paints and colors used for the original Egyptian models. And discover ancient free-hand painting techniques, including how to create authentic hieroglyphic symbols to decorate your project. A profusion of detailed patterns and diagrams—plus photographs of each finished model—accompany the text, guiding crafters step-by-step to shipbuilding success.

pictures of finished ships and decorations are good. Patterns included in the book do not work. It is impossible to get the pictured model using the patterns with the given directions.

the author does include a lot of good detail covering other aspects of the boat construction
By C. Fisher
Purchased this for my one of my kid's projects. As was mentioned previously, the patterns do NOT match the sample pictures. To add insult to injury, the patterns will not produce an end result for the hull that is as attractive as the pics. Having said that, the author does include a lot of good detail covering other aspects of the boat construction. I suggest following the instructions and patterns for the hull (unless your talented enough to translate the pics to construction) and then have fun with the rest of the boat details...

The Place I Call Home, by Maria Mazziotti Gillan

The place that Maria Mazziotti Gillan calls home is a universal haven built of enduring memories and peopled by loving family. In Gillan's newest book of poetry, THE PLACE I CALL HOME, we share her complex emotions of an immigrant childhood in Paterson, New Jersey, in the 1950s, her long marriage, her husband's devastating illness, and her subsequent widowhood. Yet, we also share the sheltering family in which she grew up, the deep love binding her and her husband, the unfolding of her life as a mother and grandmother, and, most of all, her resilient spirit. She reminds us that even when the bud of youthful naïveté flowers into the reality of an uncaring universe, we are home again when we recall the protection we felt within the warm sanctuary of family. These poems are beautiful crystalline narratives, sometimes exuberant and sometimes poignant, but always unflinchingly true.

A Place We Can All Linger
By Mark Hillringhouse
Milk with Bosco, the aroma of rosemary, mint and oregano in the garden, memories of kitchen smells, an Italian mother home cooking, calling her children back from play--"The Place I Call Home" by Maria Gillan is a place we can all linger. There are many voices speaking in these poems, the voice of a young girl growing up in Paterson, and the voices of her siblings, a brother, a sister, and uncles and aunts--an Italian-American world of working class families. The speaker's memory in each poem is alive with all the vibrant details of this gone world: Burkes ice cream parlor, Quackenbush's and Jacob's Departments Stores. These poems lean on the hard facts of life in a world of survival, of a father out of work with a back injury, of parents with no formal education, where a family lives on hourly wages, but they also celebrate the love and close family ties amid this struggle to make it in America. These are poignant poems, filled with the strong feelings of a speaker who pays homage to the place she grew up and to the people who are a part of her life.

Heart-felt and Haunting
By sherida yoder
Gillan always writes directly and passionately about family, relationships, and memory. With clarity she sees herself as a child, as a newly wed, as a daughter, a mother, a grandmother, a widow. But always she is the poet who describes the moment in sensuous perfection and the reader is there beside her, remembering his or her own life, sharing the common bonds we feel, and recalling the changes and tender beauties and losses that are our own.

Steinlen Cats (Dover Fine Art, History of Art), by Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923), one of the greatest illustrators of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, but moved permanently to Paris at the age of 23 and became a French citizen.
In addition to posters, song sheets, etchings, murals, and book illustrations, Steinlen did drawings for over 30 magazines, some of which he founded. A politically liberal Montmarte bohemian, he faithfully portrayed all aspects of Parisian life, but gave special attention to the everyday joys and sorrows of working people.
Perhaps no other sector of Steinlen's art is as strongly associated with his name today as his studies of cats. He never ceased to draw them in all their activities and moods. Cats figure prominently in some of his most famous works, such as his great poster "Pure Sterilized Milk from the Vingeanne."
The cat drawing in the present volume are reproduced from two rare volumes: a 1933 collection of previously unpublished animal drawings (Chats et autres bêtes, published in an edition of only 545 copies), and a turn-of-the-century album of picture stories without words (Des chats).

Drawings come to life
By Joan T. Smith
These drawings seem to move by themselves within the printed page. This artist truly portrays a cat in all serenity, playfulness, strength, and agility. These drawings are so life-like I could almost feel the warmth of life in each animal drawing. A great gift for any kitty lover.

The Cosmic Code (Dover Books on Physics), by Heinz Pagels

This is one of the most important books on quantum mechanics ever written for lay readers, in which an eminent physicist discusses and explains the core concepts of physics without resorting to complicated mathematics. "Can be read by anyone. I heartily recommend it!" — New York Times Book Review. 1982 edition.

The Best Quantum Physics Overview
By A Customer
It is a shame that this book is out of print. Pagels' lucid explanations of the quantum world are the best within lay science publishing. I also believe that Pagels' rational approach is far and away a better introduction/exploration than the Eastern Mysticism-based books like Zukav's "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" or Fritjof Capra's "The Tao of Physics." Of course, those books are useful as entertainment (as exotic Parallelism) but it should be noted that the connections between Eastern Mysticism and Quantum Mechanics in regards to questions of conciousness and reality are not accepted as valid by any but a minuscule minority of thinkers. Pagels' approach is much more true to the thinking in new physics circles. In regards to a second edition that Mr. Beagle is hoping for, it will not be forthcoming due to the untimely demise of Pagels in a mountaineering accident in the late 80's. He is sorely missed! Also, for the very best in Computer Culture-related lay science (even though it is somewhat dated) I can't recommend his "The Dreams of Reason" highly enough - especially to those familiar with his other works! I've seen both books in used book shops many times.

A durable, indelible work...
By Laurie Fletcher
I've been a fan of this book since it was published in hard back in 1982 and recent re-reading remind me that it is still one of the best, most accessible lay books on quantum physics that has ever been written. It is a little hard to track down sometimes, but perhaps they will eventually reissue it. Unfortunately, Heinz Pagels died in a mountain climbing accident years ago and won't be able to update this wonderful book. It would be great if one of his many colleagues and admirers would undertake to do it.

The best book on a complex, abstract subject
By Amazon Customer
This is the best Quantum Physics book even written for the lay man. Infact, it might even be the best popular science book ever written. I have been a fan of this book for over 15 years and I feel that it is "must read" for every student involved or pursuing any branch of pure science (not necessarily physics).
Amazingly well explained concepts that stream you to the miniscule, abstract world of Quantum Mechanics.

The Cambridge Companion to Sam Shepard (Cambridge Companions to Literature), by Matthew Roudané

Few American playwrights have exerted as much influence on the contemporary stage as Sam Shepard. His plays are performed on and off Broadway and in all the major regional American theatres. They are also widely performed and studied in Europe, particularly in Britain, Germany and France, finding both a popular and scholarly audience. In this collection of seventeen original essays, American and European authors from different professional and academic backgrounds explore the various aspects of Shepard's career - his plays, poetry, music, fiction, acting, directing and film work. The volume covers the major plays, including Curse of the Starving Class, Buried Child, and True West, as well as other lesser known but vitally important works. A thorough chronology of Shepard's life and career, together with biographical chapters, a note from the legendary Joseph Chaikin, and an interview with the playwright, give a fascinating first-hand account of an exuberant and experimental personality.

Review
"Materials that give this volume an advantage over any other recent studies include a lengthy interview with Shepard (conducted in May 2000), an essay by Roudane on the preproduction/publication script of The Late Henry Moss, and a brief note by Joseph Chaikin ("On Sam Shepard").... Highly recommended." Choice
