The Etude en 12 Exercises and the 12 Grandes Etudes can both be regarded as early versions of the Etudes d' Exécution Transcendante (Transcendental Etudes). Each set is a highly successful work in its own terms, and both generally surpass the famous final version in difficulty. The separate "Mazeppa" is yet another working of one of the etudes from these sets. The individual etudes range dramatically in style from the delicate refinement of "Feux Follets" to the startling bravura of "Wilde Jagd" (both from the Transcendental Etudes). Each will bring to pianists and their listeners a moving encounter with the genius of this towering musical personality.

A great piano book!

This is a great book for any virtuoso pianist. Including the first and second versions of the transcendental etudes (Etudes en Douze Excercises, and Douze Grandes Etudes), which you will not find in any other book, it includes 36 songs on over 250 pages. It is an excellent deal, and along with its partner, the second volume, they are a valuable addition to your repertoire.

Good binding, clear printing, and of course, it's complete...

...but who can actually PLAY it ): ?

A lot of his earlier works are very approachable, but the Transcendental Etudes aren't recognised as the most difficult piano pieces ever written for no reason!

Throughout, not only the practices but the reasons and feelings behind them are described. Twenty seven illustrations show many of the crafts and signs described.

Great Book For Beginners

Fun book to learn how to play piano. I'm trying to teach myself to learn how to play at home and I'm trying to work up to playing my favorite Brahms song of all time which is 'How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place'. That is one of the last songs in the book. Right now I'm up to Brahms' famous 'Lullaby' song. So I have a ways to go. But the music is easy to read and fun to play. I really enjoy playing it. I think anyone looking to learn piano at home, give piano lessons, or just play for fun will really like this book. Especially if you enjoy Brahms.

A chance encounter with a former tiger hunter in Calcutta, India, inspired the author to search for wild tigers. The project took Ives, a naturalist and tour leader, to national parks in India, Nepal, Thailand and Sumatra over four years (1986-1990). He gives a vivid, gripping account of his travels and the people he met, and his report on tigers is disturbing. Ives learned that official estimates of tiger populations have been grossly inflated and that poaching for the lucrative Chinese market continues. In light of human population pressures and deforestation, the future appears bleak for the wild tiger. Ives believes the only way to preserve Asia's natural heritage is through international parks supported by the wealthier nations.

On the trail of wild tigers in Southeast Asia, India, and Nepal, Ives (Notes on the Water Journals, Confluence, 1980) provides a stimulating account of the daunting problems faced by those who seek to save any species from extinction. The events recounted here draw on the journals Ives kept from 1986 to 1990. His chilling conclusion is pessimistic-tigers will be extinct in the wild within ten years. Ives sees trade sanctions as nothing more than a slap on the wrist to countries that deal in the trade of animal skins and body parts. He sees people such as Billy Arjan Singh and Valmik Thapar (both authors themselves) as heroes in the fight to save tigers-even though they are losing the battle. From the moment the authors take you on board the train in Calcutta to the moment they have you leave the taxi in Delhi, you will be swept along on a wonderful tale of adventure. You will travel roads that aren't easily traveled-but then, that is the point the author is making. The road to extinction is a long and arduous one. Recommended armchair travel for those with an interest in preservation of endangered species.

Find this book wherever you can and read it.

This book currently is out of print, which is troubling. First of all, its disapperance bodes ill for tiger, who certainly could have no more eloquent defender than Richard Ives. This is a book that, if read, could inspire people to work for the preservation of tiger. But while it is impossible to overestimate the book's value as a call to arms, it also is the story of a man who has chosen an improbable and difficult life and pursued it with admirable commitment. The book has been an inspiration for me since I found it in a shop in Paris on my way home from a two-and-a-half stint in the Peace Corps. If Richard Ives proves to be a Cassandra, his wise words on tiger and men ignored by everyone, then we are much the worse for it.

Its tigers vs. men and the tigers are losing!

THis book traces the author's obsession with seeing a tiger in the wild, up close and personal. In the process, he visits some of the last vestiges of tiger territory in countries such as India, Sumatra, and Indonesia. The animal is being hunted and hounded to extinction to the point that 4 of the original 8 species are gone and there are only about 1000 tigers left in the wild, if current estimates are to be believed. He documents the losing fight that several individuals are fighting to save the animal, and he encounters some bizarre characters along the way that add toi the entertaining nature of the book. The book is especially critical of the Japenese, who are the world formost destroyers of the worlds natural resources. Unless drastic steps are taken, the tiger will be extinct in the wild in 25 years or survive only as a pathetic remnant. The author carefully balances the the concerns of those who want the animal to survive with those who see it as a menace that kills and destroys as its habitat is rapidly being reduced. A quick, engrossing, if a bit overly romantic of a read. If you care about extiction, or just want to stare a wild tiger in the eye, without winding up as its next meal, then you will enjoy this book!

This book is great! It tells you everyhing about Armour in the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, China, Korea, Mongolia, Japan, Phillipines, and more since the first armours available. I highly recommend it for history majors concentrating in ancient history. I like it.

The Kindle version is NOT useful for stitching

Get the paper copy! The Kindle version is NOT useful for stitching. I have both the book and the Kindle version but I'm giving this 4 stars based purely on the usefulness of the actual book, which has numerous border designs for Celtic knots and flourishes, plus a few larger all over designs. and 2 or 3 more complex designs. There are also Celtic animals as shown on the front, and stand-alone knot designs. The Kindle is just useful as large thumbnails for the book since you cannot see the squares well enough to work with on screen. The paper version graphs are fine.

Excellent assorted designs for cross-stitch and needlepoint.

Book includes knotwork designs, borders, background patterns,and suggests ways to combine these patterns. There are alsoseveral pages of Celtic animal motifs as well as repeat borders that have animals as the main subject. Clear graphs in general, although they do pack a lot per page. No color suggestions. Excellent resource.

This is, bar none, the most useful pattern book I have ever owned. The knotwork is beautifully intricate, the animal forms are amusing, and the triskeles are gorgeous. I have used dozens of the hundreds of patterns offered here. If you cross-stitch (or do needlepoint, or whatever) you WILL be inspired by the contents of this book.

Lovely designs keep me crocheting

This small, inexpensive book has the best designs among the hundreds of books for Filet. Contemporary designs are too often in bad taste or not very pretty. Back in the early 20th Century there was more contact with Nature, more poetry in everyday life, and this album reflects this with lovely floral designs of all kinds, graceful cherubs and goddesses etc. I have made a lot of them for the past three years, and I still have a lot left in the book that I want to make. The absence of diagram in some cases is not a problem because the photos are very clear. At worst, use a magnifying glass. The explanations are easy to follow. This is the best investment in Filet Crochet you can make!

The book has a lot of ideas in it - many of them from historical or antique sources. Charts were included for some items - but it was mostly photos. Charts would have been nice - but as the book said, they aren't really needed for this type of crochet.

About the Author
Pamela Williamson, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of special education at the University of Cincinnati. She received both her doctorate of philosophy and her master s degree from the University of Florida. Her work in K-12 settings was in inclusive classrooms where she served a diverse group of students, including individuals with autism. Currently, she works with pre-service teachers, preparing them to deliver high-quality literacy instruction to all students with special needs. In addition, she works with in-service teachers to prepare them to assume roles as formal and informal teacher leaders. Her research interests include reading and autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, teacher leadership, and inclusion. Her work is published in Exceptional Children, Qualitative Heath Research, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Child and Family Studies, Learning Disabilities Research and Practice, Field Methods, Beyond Behavior, and Childhood Education. Christina Carnahan, Ed.D., is an assistant professor of special education at the University of Cincinnati, where she coordinates the special education master s degree program. She received her doctorate from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Carnahan began working in recreational settings with individuals with significant disabilities as a teen. After completing her undergraduate degree in special education, she taught in K-12 settings where she served individuals across the autism spectrum. Currently, she works with pre-service and practicing teachers, preparing them to meet the diverse needs of individuals with autism and other complex disabilities. She also conducts research in special education, focusing on literacy, evidence-based practice, and teacher effectiveness. In addition to her teaching and research, she is involved with local and state organizations working to improve educational services for individuals with ASD. Required reading for special ed teachers.

Christina Carnahan and Pamela Williamson see reading as a difficulty for kids with autism. The reason isn’t a case of “can or can’t read,” but a case of what part they will read. They discuss how an autistic child might have what they call “selective attention,” where they’ll focus on only one part. This makes sense, because autistic children often focus on certain shapes or colors, not on the whole picture. If you think of it, they may have a sort of “tunnel vision” that a baseball pitcher would have, as opposed to the outfielder, who has to be watching the whole field. The question is, what does the teacher do about it?

In a later chapter, Dr. Kara Hume gives an example of scheduling to keep the student aware and one task. Each student is given a schedule that shows what is expected for that day, so they know what to expect when they come in. So far so good, all students need structure. But what about the student who is easily distracted, or has trouble with multiple instructions? For this, Dr. Hume suggests a “visual schedule,” where symbols or illustrations are used. For an activity that involves listening, a picture of a kid with headphones can be used. For math problems, 2+2 can be used, or you can use a pie chart, ruler, or abacus. This can be applied to reading a chapter as well; you can break it down into characters, events, or how the characters change.

What we have here is a case study on literacy for autistic students, written by a selection of experts on educating students with special needs. The general purpose of the book is to provide instructional approaches for literacy, but in a way that allows them to be educated with all other students. The use of visual cues and scheduling teaches time management, while story diagramming teaches them to focus on multiple factors, not just one.

Unfortunately, many of the services discussed in this book, such as resource rooms, will be unavailable in many schools. It remains to be seen how the nation’s schools will improve with regard to special education services.

A valuable guide to Thoreau's work...

This guide to Thoreau's work is a collection of thirteen essays by academic experts. Its topics include the evolution of Thoreau's reputation, the impact of Concord on his life and views, and the effects of his friendship with Emerson. Other essays discuss each of Thoreau's major works, placing them in the context of his life, his times, and his beliefs. Ronald Hoag's comments on Thoreau's natural history writings (whose topics include such seemingly unpoetic subjects as the dispersion of seeds) are especially helpful. They tie these seemingly disconnected "scientific works" to Thoreau's other writings by illuminating the philosophical threads that unite them. Best of all, most of the essays in this book are superbly written, in contrast to so many academic productions. They are clear, balanced, sensible, straightforward, well informed, and highly illuminating. My understanding and appreciation of Thoreau's work has been greatly enhanced by this remarkable book, which I strongly recommend. If you like Thoreau, you can buy this book with the assurance that it will enhance -- not disrupt -- your enjoyment.

Only A Start

Helps to put Thoreau's work in some kind of context but is of course fragmented due to the way it's written and you'll want to supplement it with other books since no single volume of criticism can interpret and contextualize Thoreau's work completely by itself. You'll need other books for more detail and a wider view of the authors writing. And of course Thoreau's work is open to many different interpretations and as much as we know about his life there are still facts that can't be gleaned out with printed editions and need further research in the archives of his unpublished papers for a clearer view of his life and times so you'll want other books to go with this.
