Auguste Rodin (Dover Fine Art, History of Art), by Rainer Maria Rilke

"Rilke's observations are wonderfully astute. For readers interested in either [sculpture or poetry], this volume is a treat." — The Christian Science Monitor
During the early 1900s, the great German poet lived and worked in Paris with Auguste Rodin. In a work as revealing of its author as it is of his famous subject, Rainer Maria Rilke examines Rodin's life and work, and explains the often elusive connection between the creative forces that drive timeless literature and great art.
Rilke served for several years as Rodin's secretary — living in the sculptor's workshops, watching the shaping of his creations, and discussing his views and ideas. Written in 1903 and 1907, these essays about the master's work and development as an artist mark Rilke's entry into the world of letters. Rodin himself paid the poet the ultimate tribute, declaring these meditations the supreme interpretation of his work. This excellent translation, complemented by 33 illustrations, will fascinate students of literature, philosophy, and art history.

Review
Combining Daniel Slagers's elegant translation from the German of Rilke's writings on Rodin with Michael Eastman's photographs of Rodin's sculptures, Auguste Rodin offers a fresh look at an unlikely mentorship. —The New York Times Book Review

Brilliant and subtle but richly colored new photographs of Rodin's sculptures by Michael Eastman make this new translation of Rilke's classic meditation on Auguste Rodin a feast for the eye and mind. National Book Critics Circle Award winner Wiliam Gass examines the text and the setting to provide insight and context. Fine writing, beautiful images, and exciting ideas make this edition of Rilke's Auguste Rodin a real treat. —R.K. Dickson

Poets and the visual arts—it is a vast subject; and all through the twentieth century artists and writers collaborated almost constantly, sometimes with such intensity that it seemed as if they were passing back and forth a single flask labeled 'Inspiration.' Few poets have written more eloquently about the visual arts than Rilke, and one of the most beautiful books of the year is his Auguste Rodin (Archipelago Books, $30), translated by Daniel Slager, with photographs by Michael Eastman, which bring us close to the charged surfaces of Rodin's bronzes, and catch their storm-tossed intensity. Rodin was at times a disturbingly bombastic artist—while his Gates of Hell may be the work of a genius, it is also pure kitsch—but in the years just after 1900, when Rilke got to know him, the avant-garde was still inclined to embrace Rodin as a rough-hewn visionary, a man in whose studio, as Rilke wrote, 'everything was becoming, but nothing was in a hurry.' For Rilke, both Rodin and Cézanne suggested, through the very physicality of their labors, a route beyond fin-de-siècle preciosity. Rilke discovered in Rodin a man who was utterly committed to the materiality of the artistic vocation. Rodin taught Rilke to make his feelings concrete. —Ruth Franklin

One Master on Another
By Allan Cox
Here is a book I came across recently that is a magnificent weaving of Rodin, the sculptor generally recognized as second only to Michelangelo and Rilke, the poet, who, to many knowing minds, is the poet without peer. Rodin the subject, Rilke the observer, whose prose here remains poetic, were bound by the work as the young poet served as the master's secretary. They were bound in heart as well, though Rodin, in a misunderstanding, fired Rilke. Rilke brings Rodin, nonetheless, to us so that we see his astounding modesty, despite his prodigious gifts, and his grasp of the likelihood his renderings would remain homeless--their greatness not known until after his death. With this, he was unmoved, and in his work, unquenched in spirit, passing along his bounty of heart to his students. The book will sit well on your coffee table, smaller than most such selections, but its 88 pages of exquisite prose and photographic samples of the man's acute sensibilities, are sure to prompt worthy explorations among your guests.

The full color reproductions are superbly presented
By Midwest Book Review
Images Of Desire: Erotic Watercolors And Cut-Outs showcases the erotic watercolor illustrations and cut-out artwork by Auguste Rodin, the famed French artist most commonly known through his sculptures. A brief introduction by Anne-Marie Bonnet adds pensive thought on these minimalist, somewhat abstract yet undeniably sensual and sexual artworks celebrating pleasure and love. Intense imagery evokes passion out of the simplest lines. The full color reproductions are superbly presented and make Images Of Desire a welcome and highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Art History and Art Appreciation reference collections.

"Rodin's fate was to work like nature works, not like men."
By Michael J. Ettner
[Please note: The review below applies only to the book entitled "Auguste Rodin," published by Archipelago Books and copyrighted 2004, found at this Amazon link: Auguste Rodin.]

This Archipelago Books volume on Rodin was smartly conceived by its small press publisher. It is nearly square in size to accommodate long-lined text printed on quality paper. Sturdily bound in a partial cloth binding, overall it has the look and feel of a quality gift book, and one features sophisticated content. If the editor's plan was to see what happens when you assemble in one package the work of three powerful communicators -- a titanic sculptor who ushered in new forms, a poet striving to understand and explicate the invisible, and a living master essayist on literary matters -- that plan succeeds with sparkling insights.

The book opens with an Introduction by William Gass, a long-time Rilke maven and an unsparing arbiter of cultural subjects. Gass stylishly fulfills his setting-the-stage duty. Using multiple perspectives (historical, aesthetic, biographical, psychological) he helps the reader understand why the young poet developed an awed appreciation for Rodin (the man and his work). We learn how Rilke absorbed the sculptor's personal and aesthetic credo ("il faut travailler, rien de travailler") with lasting effect on his mature poetic output.

All that Rilke learned from Rodin he expressed to the world in two significant pieces which make up the bulk of this book: an essay written at the very start of his personal association with the elder artist in 1903; and a public lecture written at the end of their relationship in 1907. Daniel Slager provides fine new translations from the German of both of these texts. Also found tucked within the pages of this book are four groups of eight glossy color photographs by Michael Eastman: a total of 32 close-up images of major pieces by Rodin that Rilke (and Gass) discuss.

The book contains 88 pages of text; this modest nominal count is misleading since in fact the material is the equivalent of about 150 pages in a standard-sized book. As a reading experience the book feels large thanks to the breadth of Professor Gass' encyclopedic observations, paragraph after paragraph, and thanks to the seemingly unstoppable eruption of Rilke's insights, sentence after sentence. Rilke reconnoiters the mountain of Rodin, tossing off witticisms ("Fame is no more than the sum of all the misunderstandings that gather around a new name"), evocative imagery (on The Burgher of Calais: "The figures withdraw within themselves, curling up like burning paper"), and grand judgments ("The artist's task consists of making a world from the smallest part of a thing"). There are extended passages, describing pieces of art and art making, in which Rilke's prose itself achieves a mountainous beauty.

True, the pieces that make up this assemblage are available elsewhere: Rilke's essays are available in other volumes, for example, in Where Silence Reigns: Selected Prose (New Directions Paperbook), while Gass's Introduction is reprinted in his book of essays, A Temple of Texts, and there are many other illustrated art books devoted to Rodin's work. But as a package, I consider this particular book to be a fine and rewarding enterprise.

Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book, by J. George Frederick

Visitors to the Pennsylvania Dutch country in Pennsylvania are usually delighted with the unique food tradition that survives there among the hills and small, well-tended farms. Ultimately based on the rich cookery of the peasants and small townspeople of the Rhineland and Switzerland, "Dutch" cookery has expanded into the new foodstuffs and materials that America has to offer, and it is one of the gastronomic treats of the country. Dishes such as apple soup, baked bananas, Dutch liver dumplings, spaetzle and braten, walnut shad, and oyster peppers are enjoyed by almost everyone.
One of the difficulties about Dutch cookery, however, is that is always has been a home cooking style within a closely knit community, and it does not go by cookbooks. Until this book appeared, the best that one could do was to try to cadge an occasional recipe from a Dutch acquaintance or a local inn.
Mr. George Frederick, one-time president of the Gourmet Society of New York, was in an unmatched position to record the delights of Dutch cookery. Himself a native Pennsylvania Dutchman, with access to countless kitchens and family cooking secrets, he was also a gourmet of international stature. He has gathered together 358 recipes that show the Dutch tradition at its strongest, all dishes with the unique savor that distinguishes them from their occasional counterparts in other cooking systems. His book is so good that it in turn has been taken over by many Pennsylvania resorts as the official cookbook.
To list only a few of the mouthwatering recipes that Mr. Frederick gives in clear, accurate recipes that you can prepare: Dutch spiced cucumbers, raspberry sago soup, pretzel soup, squab with dumplings Nazareth, shrimp wiggle, Dutch beer eel, sherry sauerkraut, cheese custard, currant cakes, and many fine dumplings, pancakes, and soups . All types of food are covered.

Excellent Perspective and Legacy Recipes. Buy It.
By B. Marold
This `Pennsylvania Dutch Cook Book' by J. George Frederick is the next step on my search to find the best `Pennsylvania Dutch' cookbook. For many reasons, it is not the best `Dutch' cookbook for the average modern American amateur cook who happens to want to make some traditional Lancaster County dishes, but it is near the top of the titles I have found for documenting this great Southeastern Pennsylvania cuisine for the author(s) of more popular books.

The first thing to note is that this is a standard Dover reprint of a book published in 1935. This means that since the book has a distinctly early 20th century point of view, before James Beard and before Julia Child and before Craig Claiborne, and certainly before the `back to the farmer's market' movement of Alice Waters and Deborah Madison. This being so, the introductory material is not only a narrative of the Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine, it is a testament to the mid-Depression view of the Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine.

The first thing which tickles me about this point of view is that the author has no interest in the more politically correct `Pennsylvania German' term, since the ethnic origins of the Pennsylvania Dutch is actually the German, French, and Swiss lands bordering on the Rhine. (I can personally attest to this, as my mother's family that settled between Bethlehem and Philadelphia were originally German Swiss Huguenot clockmakers from Western Switzerland.) The second thing that appealed to me personally was the fact that the author includes my hometown of Bethlehem, PA among the five great cities of Pennsylvania Dutch homeland, including Allentown, Lancaster, Reading, and Philadelphia. There is even a recipe for `Bethlehem Scrapple Cabbage'. Talk about a `signature' dish!

One of the most distinctive aspects of the 1935 point of view is the author's belief that all regional American cuisines are dying out, diluted into the great American soup pot (my term). The great thing about this perception is that it was either wrong, or the emphasis on regional culinary identities of the last 30 years has overcome and reversed this fading of local differences. On the other side of the coin, the author's claim that of the three great regional cuisines he mentions, referring to `Southern' cooking and `New England' cuisine, the Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine, based in a few counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania, has by far the smallest geographical base, yet it has some of the greatest culinary diversity. The only real competitor the author sees is the Cajun / Creole cuisine based in New Orleans.

At first, I was inclined to take this statement as simply an expression of regional pride, until the author started to remind me of the genius of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture for preserving food and using preserved foods in a wide range of recipes. Is this not the cornerstone of the great Italian cuisine, with their wealth of preserved meats, cheeses, pastas, wines, and liqueurs? As a minor participant in that great tradition in making and buying our church's `chow-chow', the classic vegetable relish. This, however, is just the tip of the iceberg, as there are dozens of varieties of pickled and dried vegetables and meats in the Dutch repertoire.

On the recipes in this book, they truly reflect a cuisine of frugal self-sufficiency. They make me laugh at all those boosters of Italian `cuisine of poverty' as they load up their dishes with $16 pound cheeses and dried ham. The most common `rich' ingredient in these recipes is butter, but then, all these recipes arose on dairy farms, where the butter was made at home. Like the Northern Italians, corn is one of the most common ingredients in Dutch dishes, but we don't make a heavy use of corn meal. Instead, the `signature' Pennsylvania Dutch corn ingredient is dried corn, famous in Southeastern Pennsylvania in the green `Cope's Corn' cans and boxes.

Since these recipes are so authentic, and since they genuinely reflect a thrifty culture, many actually appear rather unappetizing on the surface, due to the heavy use of flour, suet, lard, and items from the `fifth quarter' of animals. The most common examples of this `use everything' culture are scrapple and souse. The first is a pate of pork scraps and corn meal. The second is a Gelee of pork and vegetable scraps. Both dishes are symptoms of the Rhineland on the border between France and Germany. What is odd is that while the book gives a recipe for making souse and ten (10) recipes for cooking scrapple, it has no recipe for making scrapple. For this, you will need to go to `Country Scrapple' by the foremost author on `Dutch' cuisine, William Woys Weaver, the author of the best historical perspective on `Dutch' cooking, `Sauerkraut Yankees'.

Frederick's book is more useful to the general audience than either of these two books from Weaver, but it is still something of a challenge to the amateur. There are several ingredients such as souse, scrapple, and dried corn that may simply not be available. There are other ingredients that I confess are a mystery to me, such as `sago'. On the other hand, `Reading Pretzels', a surprising ingredient in some soups, is plentiful throughout the country now.

On searching the book for my favorite `Dutch' dishes, I find everything but stuffed pig's stomach. And, all the other recipes I found are close to or exactly like my grandmother and mother made; however, even their versions were a bit fancier and richer than the recipes given in this book. The hot endive salad, for example, wilt's the dickens out of the greens, while my mother's take on the same dish is to simply heat the greens with the hot dressing, without the endive ever touching the hot pan in which the dressing was cooked.

For the amateur culinary archeologist and the native `Dutchman', this is a great, inexpensive find, containing a heap of nostalgia for the tummy.

Regional Cooking At Its Best
By Lorelei
What an amazing book! I glimpse into the not-so-distant past when we couldn't just "log-on" and get whatever we desire. This cookbook goes back to the time of self-sustaining farms and communities. You can see this in the number of recipe variations that include the town where it is common. Anyone familiar with PA Dutch cuisine should own this cookbook!

Good book
By Nana
This is a book that contains many old recipes that offer a lesson in the culture of the PA Dutch community, containing culinary favorites of a specific region of our country. PA Dutch cooking is very delicious, and the recipes in this book are not difficult to replicate in spite of being so wonderful.

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 & Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2: With Orchestral Reduction for Second Piano (Dover Music for Piano

This authoritative edition continues Dover's series of great piano concertos with orchestral reduction for second piano — the universal standard, for students and professionals alike, for learning and rehearsing all concertos. Together for the first time are two of the most performed and recorded concertos of all time: the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in G-flat Minor, Op. 23, and the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18.
Both of these great Russian works have achieved unrivaled worldwide popularity and are absolute musts in the repertoire of every serious pianist. The Tchaikovsky concerto combines a virtuoso piano part with brilliant orchestral scoring. The Rachmaninoff concerto is universally admired for the dark, brooding opening, enormously popular themes, and passionate, lyrical final movement. Every pianist and serious piano student will want this attractive and modestly priced edition.

Very bare edition of two great complex concertos.
By Vasily Vylkov,
The music is fantastic, being the most popular concerto repertoire of Russian origin, but the edition assumes the reader some sort of Russian professional. Right away one notices that there are very few fingerings noted, and altogether I have found maybe one editor's note on execution in the entirety of the two concertos. The edition contains no introduction to the music, no informative synopsis of any sort, no helpful background history on the composer's methods, reasonings or motivation for the music to aid the interpreter, nothing at all, in fact, but the notes themselves. Not even a photograph of Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky to identify the name with. This lack of support for the performer is considerably below the standards of any serious edition. Unless one is well-prepared with some amount of collected knowledge of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and with the experience of having listened to each of these concertos, the edition will leave you stranded. But, then again, it is great music one must have.

As all Dover Publications go
By Brent Woo
This book is no exception. Large noteheads, clear definition and accurate engraving. I got what I wanted, and every detail of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No.2 is included in this great book.

Amended: Also characteristic of Dover editions is that the binding is horrendously ineffective. I've had mine for a couple months now, and the cover has completely separated from its pages.
I have many Dover publications because I like their variety and collections, but this is the second book that has fallen apart.

2 Great Russian Concertos
By A Customer
A must to an aspiring virtuoso's repertoire. Rachmaninoff was the peak of piano style and complexity, his first big hit being the second piano concerto. Tchaikovsky wrote a magnificent virtuosic piano concerto included in this book. You can hear the opening bars almost anywhere even today. From the lengthy, intimidating cadenza of the first movement, to the last over-hand octave run, it is a beatiful piece of piano literature. If you are serious about the piano, you must have this volume.

Excellent resource and study of women at the cross not just then but throughout the ages, right up today!
By Richard and Liz
Written in four parts this book looks in depth at the seven women that were at the cross and much more.

Part I - Examining the events during the six hours at Calvary.
Chapter 1 - Who were the women who "silently agonized nearby throughout the day?" They were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Susanna, Mary the mother of James and Joses, Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary's sister and Salome. They not only saw the crucifixion of Jesus but also of the two thieves. Crucifixion was a 'grizzly task.'

These women saw the soldiers breaking the legs of the two thieves. Why did they do that? To prevent the person being crucified from pushing up on their legs to allow air into their lungs, therefore hastening death. This was not a pleasant scene! Imagine if you were a mother watching on!

Chapter 2 - Women and their world examines the culture of the time. Most women were only valued as child bearers.

Chapter 3 looks at each woman individually.

Chapter 4 examines their feelings. Bewilderment - last week Jesus was revered, this week crucified. Piercing anguish and grief, terror, feeling of abandonment, exhaustion etc.

Chapter 5 - All they had to offer was themselves.

Part II - Burial and Resurrection which includes looking at Jewish Burial Customs
Chapter 7 - Visiting the Tomb

Chapter 8 - Sharing the Good News
What did the death and resurrection of Jesus really accomplish?

Part III - What Other Women Served Christ During the Earliest Years of the Christian Church?

Chapter 9:
Vibia Perpetua - 203 AD - an early martyr with amazing faith
Catherine of Siena - 1347 -1380 - stayed in Siena to help sufferers of the Black Death
Ann Judson - 1789 - 1826 Ann and her husband, Adoniram, were the first missionaries to Burma.

Chapter 10 - Women who Opened their Homes
Priscilla - leader in the early church
Marcella - late 300's
Katherine von Bora - 1499 - 1552, wife of Martin Luther. She had escaped from a convent with 10 other nuns in herring barrels!
Susanna Wesley - 1669 - 1742, the mother of John and Charles Wesley

Chapter 11 - Women who Influenced through their Resources
Paula * Isabella of Castile * Vittoria Colonna * Emily Tubman

Chapter 12 - Women who Instructed and Encouraged
Hilda * Hannah Moore * Amanda Smith * Pandita Ramabai

Not sure who all these women are? Get the book and find out!

Part IV- Women at the Cross Today
Chapter 13 - That's you and me! We, as Christian women of the 21st century have access to God's word. We do not have to rely on someone else to read the scriptures to us. We have the freedom to celebrate.

Chapter 14 - Remembering the Cross
The Lord's Supper * Art * Spoken and Written Word * Worship and Prayer

Chapter 15 - Responding with Love and Faithfulness
Love Christ Passionately * Face Your Fears * Move Out From the Crowd * Be Effective Where You Are * Remain Faithful

Chapter 16 - Living at the Foot of the Cross
Know You Are Alive in Christ * Feel God's Loving Embrace * Worship at the Cross

Appendix - Putting It All Together

Well-written and put together book where you will learn WAY more than just the women at the cross. Great for personal or group study. Highly recommended!

At the cross...and beyond
By Debbie
"Women at the Cross" is a devotional or Bible study type book for women. It started with the women who are named as those with Jesus at the cross and resurrection. The author explained what we know about them and gave some cultural and daily life information about women at that time. She then used Scripture and cultural background information to write a "filled out" description of Jesus' death and resurrection.

The second part of the book gave brief biographies of some notable Christian women through the ages who have lived and died to spread the Good News. These biographies were so brief that I'm not sure how much impact they have. I've read more detailed biographies on many of these women, and maybe the intent was to interest the readers in learning more. The last part was about how modern women have and can respond to Christ's death and resurrection.

I've read a lot of Bible culture and reference books, so I didn't learn anything new from this short ebook. However, if you're not familiar with this type of information and would like a brief "Christian women's history," then this is a good presentation of it.

By Sheila Smith
Love this author. This was a great Bible study leading up to Easter.

Our ladies Bible study group really enjoyed this one. It reminds us how important women were
to Jesus and the events that took place leading up to his death and resurrection.

Richard Owen: Biology without Darwin, by Nicolaas A. Rupke

In the mid-1850s, no scientist in the British Empire was more visible than Richard Owen. Mentioned in the same breath as Isaac Newton and championed as Britain’s answer to France’s Georges Cuvier and Germany’s Alexander von Humboldt, Owen was, as the Times declared in 1856, the most “distinguished man of science in the country.” But, a century and a half later, Owen remains largely obscured by the shadow of the most famous Victorian naturalist of all, Charles Darwin. Publicly marginalized by his contemporaries for his critique of natural selection, Owen suffered personal attacks that undermined his credibility long after his name faded from history.

With this innovative biography, Nicolaas A. Rupke resuscitates Owen’s reputation. Arguing that Owen should no longer be judged by the evolution dispute that figured in  only a minor part of his work, Rupke stresses context, emphasizing the importance of places and practices in the production and reception of scientific knowledge. Dovetailing with the recent resurgence of interest in Owen’s life and work, Rupke’s book brings the forgotten naturalist back into the canon of the history of science and demonstrates how much biology existed with, and without, Darwin

Review
"A marvellous achievement. . . . Owen comes into clearer focus than ever before. . . . Rupke does us great service in restoring parts of the Victorian world usually neglected in favour of the quest for origins." (Janet Browne TLS)

"Riveting. In relating bitter Victorian debates Rupke shows how science affected great social and religious questions still urgently relevant today." (Financial Times)

"One of the many strengths of Rupke's impressive book is the way in which the institutional framework is convincingly integrated with the style and content of Owen's science. . . . This is carefully documented, exciting, and convincing history." (Metascience)

About the Author

Nicolaas A. Rupke is professor of the history of science at Göttingen University and the author of Alexander von Humboldt: A Metabiography, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

but its a fascinating read and commendable attempt to restore Richard Owen to a well deserved place amongst history's great scie
By Alan Grant
This book doesn't read as a typical biography; it examines the role Richard Owen played in the dramatic world of late 19th Century science in England. His role has been largely demonized in light of his stance against Darwin and evolution. This work seeks to rectify Owen's reputation, expounding on his scientific achievements while shedding light on why he turned from the preeminent scientist in Britain to the loathsome wretch most history and paleontology books make him out to be.

The prose can get very technical, but its a fascinating read and commendable attempt to restore Richard Owen to a well deserved place amongst history's great scientists and visionaries.

Electrodynamics and Classical Theory of Fields and Particles (Dover Books on Physics), by A. O. Barut

"We can only hope that more such striking expositions will be written." — Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society
This is a systematic, covariant treatment of the classical theories of particle motion, fields, and the interaction of fields and particles. Particular attention is given to the interaction of charged particles with the electromagnetic field. The treatment throughout the book is relativistic; the author attempts, as much as possible, a coordinate free (or covariant) form of the equations both for particles and the fields. The book opens with an extensive discussion of space-time, Lorentz transformations, Lorentz-group and tensor and spinor fields. This material is essential to the understanding of many branches of theoretical physics, in particular relativistic quantum theory. Chapter II describes various relativistic forms of the fundamental problem of dynamics: describing the trajectories of particles for given external forces. The general dynamical principles to obtain the field equations and the important problems of the conservation laws are discussed in Chapter III. The second part of the book (Chapters IV-VI) is devoted to a lucid treatment of the interactions of fields and particles. Chapter IV deals with equations of motion and their solutions (the so-called Cauchy problem), focusing on the solution of field equations with Green's functions using Dirac formalism. The problem of feedback between particles and fields (radiation and radiation reaction) is taken up in Chapter V, as are questions concerning the limitations of classical field theories and classical dynamics. Dr. Barut concludes the book with an excellent exposition of the purely mechanical approach to the problem of the interactions of charged particles — the so-called action-at-a-distance formulation of electrodynamics. Problems, alternate proofs, and additional topics are included at the end of each chapter, where a useful bibliography is also provided. A general bibliography appears at the end of the book.

Learnin all about Classical Fields
By Moataz H. Emam
On the subject of Classical fields, I have not read a better book than Barut's. It is clear and comprehensive. I discovered more about things like the Lorentz group and the Lagrangian formalism of fields than I thought existed. It is an excellent book by all standards. If you need to learn Quantum Field theory, start here first. Learn all about classical fields. The equations in this book are ready for quantization.

A beautiful little book
By Michael Ibison
This is a concise, clear, friendly but unfussy little book on classical electrodynamics (CED), and relativistic fields. Simultaneously, it provides an easy introduction to the mathematical machinery of relativistic dynamics and fields. There is an agreeable emphasis on the Lagrangian formulations, a good-sized chapter devoted to radiation and radiation-reaction, and a (regrettably) short piece on action-at-a-distance CED. This book is about the structure of CED in general, and does not deal with particular arrangements of charges, currents, coils, etc. etc. in the manner of an undergraduate text on EM.

Very nice and concise book
By Jigal
Starts from the foundations of Special-Relativity, including Lorentz transformation, groups and spinors, then dynamics.

Formulation of Lagrangian fields and the conserved quantities is also very good, though I think Rohrlich's book is better.

Covers self-interaction and radiation reaction in a very clear way.

In short, for this price, it is truly a gem.

The Tatter's Treasure Chest (Dover Knitting, Crochet, Tatting, Lace)From Dover Publications

The art of tatting has produced some of the most beautiful, imaginative, and intricate designs in the history of needlework. Over 100 of the best of those designs — many of them overlooked and out of circulation for generations — have been selected for this unique collection from the pages of long out-of-print thread company leaflets of the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and 50s.
The designs range from tiny coasters to a handsome checkerboard luncheon set and include elegant collars, elaborate tracery patterns for doilies and luncheon mats, and delicately beautiful edgings for pillowcases, guest towels, and table mats. Among the highlights: a distinctive Victorian tray mat, a handkerchief with a butterfly corner, heirloom baby caps and bonnets, a sunburst doily, and a spectacular jabot collar.
This rich treasury of tatting classics, complete with full instructions and a photograph of each creation, offers needleworkers a dazzling assortment of time-honored designs that are ideal for home, family, and personal use, and perfect as gifts that exquisitely display the giver's needlework expertise.

The Tatter's Treasure Chest
By S. E. Simmons
This book consists of reprints of patterns from thread company pamphlets of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. The reprints are well done and clear, and the original instructions have not been altered (In addition to the many patterns, readers will enjoy a nostalgic visit to an era when luncheon cloths, chair sets, and even roller shade pulls were supposed to exhibit a housewife's skill and elicit the envy of her neighbors).
This book would be a good choice for a novice tatter who is looking for more patterns. Not only are the instructions written out in longhand, but there are hundreds of patterns to choose from (some tatters find longhad instructions difficult to follow because you can lose your place; they have a point! I use a Post-it Note as a marker, which helps).
Tatting patterns from mid-century were marketed with a focus on novelty and "modern" styling. They also tended to be simpler than older patterns. Was this a reflection on tatters' decreasing skill level, or an acknowledgement that modern women had less time to devote to handwork?
I give this book five stars a) for the number and variety of the patterns and b) for the quality of the black and white reprints, which are very clear.

Lots of tatting bang for your buck
By Amy, Tatting & Cosmetics Host, Wedding Guru
This collection features dozens of patterns from the 1930s and 40s; more than 100 patterns for less than six dollars! For designs created during a time when tatting is thought of as being mostly doilies and edgings, this collection is pretty creative. Some of the most unique designs are the baby bonnet, earrings and boutennieres. I love looking at the models for some of the designs, everything is so vintage. My only problem with this book is that the patterns are written in longhand, making it easy to lose your place while tatting.

A delight!
By Gillian Buchanan
This lovely book is a reprint of patterns from several books from the 1930s and 40s. There is a wide range of items including a huge selection of edgings, some lovely doilies, collars and baby wear and some exquisite table linen.

The patterns are written in the old fashioned longhand style of their time. The reproductions are of reasonable quality considering the book was published in the late 1980s. There are no diagrams though most of the photos are quite clear.

Most of the pieces are fairly simple though some are quite large, and most people will find it fairly easy to work them once the instructions have been deciphered. I recommend this book.

From the Back Cover

Thomas Nast (1840–1902) created the images of Santa Claus which we recognize today. Here are his best-known illustrations of Santa Claus and Christmas. Included are his drawings of Santa perched atop snowy chimneys and his patriotic Civil War drawing, "Santa Claus in Camp." Here are the first illustrations of Santa's workshop at the North Pole, of Santa in his sleigh, of Santa opening his mail and making a record of children's behavior. Here, too, are Nast's gently humorous drawings of children on Christmas Eve, showing them hanging enormous stockings, standing innocently under mistletoe, tracing Santa's route on a map of the world, and waiting up all night to catch a glimpse of Santa.
This volume contains all of the familiar and beloved drawings which appeared in the 1890 edition of Thomas Nast's Christmas Drawings for the Human Race. But for clarity and fine detail, Dover photographed many from issues of Harper's Weekly from 1863 and 1886, in which most of Nast's Christmas drawings originally appeared.

About the Author
Called the "Father of the American Cartoon," Thomas Nast (1840-1902) was an influential caricaturist and political cartoonist. Remembered for his Civil War illustrations in Harper's Weekly, Nast's political cartoons were also instrumental in the downfall of Boss Tweed and the election of President Ulysses S. Grant. He solidified America's picture of Santa Claus by portraying him as a round, twinkly, elfin figure, which he based on descriptions in Washington Irving's writings and Clement Moore's poem "The Night Before Christmas." Nast also popularized the donkey as a symbol representing the Democratic Party and the elephant as a Republican Party symbol.

Thomas Nast-Father of "The Modern Cartoon."
By Lee Roy Eddie
Thomas Nast born September 27th 1846 and lived until 1902 is the undisputed "Father of the Modern Cartoon". I honestly believe that any professional illustrator would back this up. According to scholarly historians such as Jay G. Williams who lectured specifically on Thomas Nast at the 2005 Fox-Adler Lecture at Skidmore College, Thomas Nast is responsible for the symbol of the Democratic Donkey and the Republican Elephant. For children around the world the beneficent image of Santa Claus which we know today is attributed in a great deal to Thomas Nast which makes this book such a gem and such a precious gift for anyone's intellect especially a child since his political works are so fiercely and frightfully powerful. I am just amazed at how little is known about an advocate of the underdog and a humanitarian who risked their life exposing corruption at a time when immigrants who could not read were able to become empowered from the most provocative and informative cartoons that today's illustrators use as a gauge for their art. From the Simpsons to South Park (documented from the commentary of the artists themselves) Thomas Nast is their master. I would give this book 7 stars if it were allowed. R. Crumb is just one such artist who attributed Thomas Nast as a major influence. How anyone can discourage the reading or purchasing of this book based on the fact that there is not a biography is paramount to writing that one should not eat apples that do not state the origin of the orchard!

Very cool artist -- one of the best yet hardly any information on the drawings or intent behind them. What a shame. However, still very cool stuff.
