Starred Review. Grade 1-4–Anyone who thinks that a math-activity book cant be fun hasnt seen this one. The text for each of the 15 problems is presented on the left, using a large, clean font on a spectrum of soft pastel backgrounds. The problems are clearly explained, but lots of alliteration and some unexpected vocabulary make for interesting reading. The illustration on the right features Fishers unique photographic technique. Richly textured patterns and hand-drawn objects are cut out and arranged, then photographed in such a way as to create whimsical tableaux with a three-dimensional feel. The characters are charming, from Ogden the orderly man who lives in a watering can that he keeps spick and span, to Daphne, the sweet blue dragon who dines on daisies. At the back of the book, Fisher presents four more problems for each illustration, with solutions provided for all. Appropriate for group discussions and attractive to browsers, this creative combination of text and art is a first purchase for most collections.–Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

Gr. 1-3. Based on the jacket illustration of a green dinosaur, many kids will be surprised that this book is neither about dinosaurs nor a traditional story. Instead, the dino--like every other character featured here--appears in one of the book's 15 "math mysteries." Each confidence-boosting number puzzle combines a brief vignette and question with a full-page illustration containing additional information and visual hints. Fisher, illustrator of Nonsense! (2004) and other titles, concocts age-appropriate problems, typically involving money, subtraction, or number identification ("[Dexter has] spotted every odd number from 1 to 20. Can you find them too?"), then extends each scenario with new questions collected at book's end. The mixed-media dioramas occasionally appear cluttered, and some children may wonder about the relevance of solving money-related problems that are so patently out-of-date (a handbag for 80 cents? Kate Spade would laugh). Still, the value of concrete math problems with a visual component is manifold, and this certainly deserves a place alongside Jon Scieszka's Math Curse (1995) and books by Stewart Murphy and Greg Tang. Math that they'll WANT to do
By Father of 2
I bought this because my children love Fisher's other books, especially, "Ellsworth's Extraordinary Electric Ears, ...", which they had at their school. "How High Can a Dinosaur Count?", is the best yet.

The math is playful, but practical enough that the kids can use it. The reader has to add up her nickels and dimes to answer the question, "Can Heloise buy a hat?" Or do some subtraction to determine, "How many daisies does Daphne eat for dinner?" All of the answers, plus 60 additional "Math Mysteries" are in the back of the book.

As always, Fisher's illustrations are captivating. She creates a world that you'll want to visit. They are classic, yet quirky and wonderfully colorful, with surprising depth (how does she do this?). But be warned, Madame Millie's Millinery has inspired my wife to paint our chest of drawers!

Math... Fun... and challenges... I am a Book Loons reviewer...
By Josephine Kaszuba Locke
As the lapel of the book jacket reads, "How much fun can math be? Open this book and find out!" Author Valorie Fisher combines the 'love of the magic of numbers' with fifteen stories and math problems to solve. The stars of 'How High Can A Dinosaur Count?' include Heloise, Lulu from the Tutti-Frutti Zoo, Felix, Flo, and Fifi, and their flapjacks.

All math exercises are placed within a brief scenario, with the author's superb artwork reflected in vivid, deep colors. A few 'math problems' are depicted as such -- "Prunella pines for the pink polka-dotted purse in the window of Hattie's Handbags. Each of the purses she is holding contains 25 cents. Does Prunella have enough to purchase the pink polka-dotted purse?" In the meantime, Dinosaur Dexter waits for his train, "... He begins to notice numbers and has soon spotted very odd number from 1 to 20. Can you find them, too?"

Fisher's book can be enjoyed by all ages -- 5 to 99. More formulas to solve are at book end, and if you get stuck for the answer, a secret... never fear, the answers can be found at the back of the book.

two plus three stars

The silliness of math problems is the starting point for a book that is lovely to look at and puzzling in the best sense of the world. As we have come to expect Valorie Fisher makes a world we can walk around in --- a world where Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear would feel right at home. Educational without ever being stuffy. Kids gobble it up. Why aren't there more math books like this?

Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics (Dover Books on Physics), by E. Atlee Jackson

Ideal as an elementary introduction to equilibrium statistical mechanics, this volume covers both classical and quantum methodology for open and closed systems. Introductory chapters familiarize readers with probability and microscopic models of systems, while additional chapters describe the general derivation of the fundamental statistical mechanics relationships. The final chapter contains 16 sections, each dealing with a different application, ordered according to complexity, from classical through degenerate quantum statistical mechanics. Key features include an elementary introduction to probability, distribution, functions, and uncertainty prior to a discussion of statistical mechanics; a review of the concept and significance of energy, together with a discussion of various models of physical systems. A series of appendixes contains helpful information on Gaussian integrals, the error function, the entropy constant, solutions to problems, and other subjects.
A background in integral calculus is assumed, but because material is presented at a reasonable level of complexity, even readers not familiar with quantum mechanics can make use of at least two-thirds of this book. Index. 5 Appendixes. Problems at ends of chapters. Over 100 text figures.

One of the best introductory statistical mechanics book
By A Customer
I am trying to learn basic statistical mechanics on my own and I tried books by Rief, Chandler, Reed and Roy, Hill.
For an introductory text, Atlee Jackson's book is much better than Chandler, Rief, Reed and Roy, and Hill. It explained the basic concepts (phase space, ideal gas, Fermi Dirac statistics) clearly in a few short chapters, and without trying to explain thermodynamics.
Most elementary statistical mechanics book (Rief, Reed and Roy, Chandler) spent too much time trying to include thermodynamics, and they do not explain thermodynamics well. The best introduction to thermodynamics is Fermi's "Thermodynamics" (Dover $6.95).

Almost Everything a Physics Undergrad Should Know
By Jason Dowd
This book is an excellent introduction to Statistical Mechanics for Physics undergraduates. In less than 250 pages, it manages to cover pretty much everything they need to know.

It only has four chapters. The first chapter is on probability. This brief introduction surprises by introducing information into the discussion. However, the definition of information is not particularly well motivated, and the reader may want to look to an introductory information theory text for a deeper understanding of this definition.

Chapter 2 is on energy and its different forms. Some quantum mechanics is used, but the reader doesn't really need to know quantum mechanics in any depth. A typical Modern Physics course will be sufficient.

Chapter 3 is simply titled "Statistical Mechanics" and it provides the essential points of the theory. The treatment is Gibbsian in flavor, and one of the most interesting parts of the book is where the author gives a very simple probabilistic argument to justify the law of canonical distribution. This is worth seeing. This chapter also introduces the partition function and lays out its connection to the property variables of thermodynamics extremely clearly.

The last chapter is on applications and takes up half the book. It covers a wide variety of systems including perfect gases, imperfect gases, simple dielectric systems, paramagnetic systems, the perfect Fermi gas, and the perfect Bose gas including Bose-Einstein condensation.

There are also a large number of problems which are quite good, but I did find it a bit annoying that the author employs numerous systems of units.

My only substantial criticism for this book is in its treatment of entropy, which is also one of the things this book covers very well in some ways. The concept of the information of a probability distribution is introduced in chapter one and is connected with entropy early on. I thought this was great. On the other hand, the author makes big deal over the thermodynamic assumption that entropy is an extensive property.

There is no fundamental justification for this assumption, the author claims, and it exacts a high price in statistical mechanics by requiring a great deal of fiddling with what initially appears to be an arbitrary function of the number of particles in the system to get it to be so. Rather, the author claims, the only justification for this assumption in thermodynamics is just that it makes things easier.

But this is not true.

Separation of mixtures such as desalination of sea water requires the input of actual work, and this is because such mixtures exist in a higher state of entropy than their pure components under the same conditions. On the other hand, it requires no work to separate pure water from pure water, and the mixing of two samples of water in the same condition is completely reversible. As such, it does not result in an increase in entropy.

But this reversibility immediately implies that thermodynamic entropy is an extensive property, and as this is a point involving actual measurable physical work, this is not just an assumption made to make the lives of thermodynamics students easier. So statistical mechanics will just have to fiddle away...

To be fair though, I found the discussion of and attention to this aspect of the subject extremely valuable, and this was one of my favorite things about this book even though the author's understanding of the thermodynamic implications seems imperfect.

Also, while entropy is discussed in great detail in the first three chapters, it is almost completely absent from the fourth where all the applications are. As such, the author never discusses the difference between the entropy of a diatomic gas with identical nuclei versus one with different nuclei due to quantum mechanics.

This seems to me to be too important of a point to simply ignore in a book on statistical mechanics. This also means that some of the expressions developed for partition functions are, in fact, wrong as they lack the quantum "symmetry factor" which compensates for the difference between homogenous and heterogeneous nuclei, and which can have important and observable consequences in chemical equilibrium for example.

Nonetheless, I would still strongly recommend this book for physics undergraduates, but I would also suggest supplementing it with Elements of Statistical Thermodynamics: Second Edition which not only covers some of the points neglected here, but presents a quite different but highly complementary approach to the entire subject.

Between these two relatively short books, you should pretty much have it licked until grad school. However, anyone reading either of these two books needs to be certain they have a strong grounding in thermodynamics. To that end, I recommend Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach with Student Resources DVD, and if you are a physics student, don't scoff at this book just because it is an engineering book. Remember that fundamentally thermodynamics is an engineering discipline of which physicists, among many others, make use. Not the other way around.

A classic introductory text
By Roger Bagula
I have Chemical Thermodynamics (A Series of books in chemistry) and Statistical Mechanics: Principles and Applications to compare this text to. It stacks up well to Wall, but lacks the depth of Hill ( but is also much better written than Hill).
In the coverage of Bose -Einstein and Fermi-Dirac partitions
the Jackson text presents material lacking in the other two texts.
There is very good mathematical physics in this text!
The writing style is readable and the diagrams are helpful in understanding the text. I'm glad I found this book!

Sweet-tart lime. Bright cherry. Creamy vanilla.

Natural sodas are vibrantly flavored with the zing of just-squeezed citrus juice, the sweetness of ripe berries, or the subtle perfume of fresh herbs. And with the popularity of countertop appliances that turn tap water into sparkling water, it’s easier than ever to make the real thing in your own kitchen: simply mix a fresh soda syrup with bubbly water for a drink that’s as sweet (or not) as you like—minus any artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.
In Make Your Own Soda, you’ll find 70 recipes for all-natural syrups with unique, artisanal flavors like pineapple, lemongrass, and hibiscus, as well as old-time favorites like ginger, sarsaparilla, and grape. You’ll also find great ways to use homemade syrups to create soda fountain classics (Chocolate Egg Cream), great cocktails (Lovage Gin Fizz), and hot drinks (Hot Apple Spice Cup), all as delicious as they are distinctive.

Simply the best soda syrup recipe book out there
By Ex-Pat Brit
I bought a SodaStream and soon started wondering whether I could make my own syrup. I quickly discovered that I was not alone and that there were several very good books out there to help me get going.

This is actually a review of three books about making your own soda. I got all three books out of the trusty Baltimore County Public Library and had a wonderful time experimenting.

The Artisan Soda Workshop: 75 Homemade Recipes by Andrea Lynn

This is the best book for those looking for recipes for syrups to put into their SodaStream bottles for two reasons: the syrups are pretty good and the concentration is right. They recipes are typically 1.5 to 2 tablespoons per 8-10oz glass, so you will need ½ cup of syrup at the very most to work with the SodaStream 1 liter bottle - which is just perfect. Neither of the other books create syrups that have the right concentration. Indeed, this book is design for SodaStream and the author lists SodaStream as one of the essentials. The author is not affiliated with SodaStream. The book covers all the basic syrups and uses a variety of different sweeteners, picking the one that she most feels complements the recipes. As others have noted, this book is small, but that is just fine. When you only have a few ingredients on a page combined with some pretty basic instructions, you don't need to kill the trees. Two minor issues with the book: no index and no resources section. This book does not contain any information on fermentation for those interested in self-fizzing sodas.

Homemade Sodas: 200 Recipes by Andrew Schloss

This the best general book on making sodas, but not the best in any particular category, although it is the only one with a recipe section for using sodas in regular cooking. You can make syrups and learn about using fermentation, and there are recipes, including the famous seltzer matzo balls. Nice index and helpful section on resources. There is also a comprehensive introduction to soda making and good information on sweeteners. For those using a SodaStream, the concentration will not work with your SodaStream bottle, but, of course, you can just put syrup into a glass and add seltzer. Unfortunately, there are some clunker recipes, and I still have nightmares about the Date + Balsamic Vinegar experience.

If you are only looking for SodaStream, go for the Artisan Soda Workshop; if you are only interested in fermentation, you might want to look at True Brews: How to Craft Fermented Cider, Beer, Wine, Sake, Soda, Mead, Kefir, and Kombucha at Home by Emma Christensen; if you are looking for the best soda syrups available, then head for the next book, by Anton Nocito.

Make Your Own Soda by Anton Nocito

This book is in a different league to the others. This chap is the soda-maker royal to Martha Stewart! This is the put ice in a tall glass, add 3 tablespoons of syrup (plus a tablespoon of lemon juice or a dash of this or that - depending on the recipe), add seltzer, kick off the shoes and relax book. Wonderful index and resources. Here is an example of why this book is in a different league: The cream soda in the Lynn and Schloss books consists of just vanilla beans, water, and sugar. In the Nocito book, that basic recipe is called vanilla soda. Nocito's cream soda includes boiling sugar in lemon water to caramelization before adding more lemon water, the vanilla beans, and a dash of salt.Wow! What a difference! I am still on the fence as to whether or not to buy this book because I really just need syrups for SodaStream. (I bought the Artisan Soda book). I suspect that the lure of such great sodas will be too much for me and I will eventually give in an buy this book.

Just a quick warning before you run off to try to make your own syrups: Cola is very, very complex, and you will not be able to reproduce Coke. Root beers are also very complex, with lots of ingredients. With such complex syrups, the effort may be more than it is worth. If you are going for cream/vanilla soda or ginger ale (basically, sliced ginger, water, sugar, plus some ground ginger for extra oomph), then you will be fine - just remember to get the best ingredients.

Enjoy your soda experience!

Great so far!
By M. Herzel
This book is a nice easy read with simple instructions on how to make great soda. So far I have only tried the Ginger Ale, which is great, and I am looking forward to trying the others. If you are trying to make the food in your life a bit less reliant on store-bought chemical-filled products but still occasionally enjoy a sweet treat than I can highly recommend this book for you.

Easy and Fun To Make at Home Sodas and Drinks in a Wide Variety of Flavors.
By mirasreviews
After concocting some delicious homemade sodas on my own, I decided to consult a book on the subject, in search of more recipes for delectable drinks. “Make Your Own Soda” by the P&H Soda Co. founder Anton Nocito contains 70 recipes for soda syrups with accompanying drink recipes in five sections: Soda Syrups from the Farm, which are fruit syrups; Soda Syrups from the Pantry; Egg Creams, Egg Shakes, and Ice Cream Sodas; Cocktails; and Hot Drinks. These recipes are for flavored syrups to which you add carbonated water in the form of store-bought seltzer or home-made if you own a Soda Stream or similar gadget. They’re not for naturally carbonated –meaning fermented- sodas.

There is some useful introductory information about carbonation, flavors, and sweeteners. The recipes range from simple sodas like lime, ginger, and cherry to the conspicuously artisanal like Dried Fig Shrub. There are some classic ingredients that one doesn’t normally associate with sodas too, like Dried Apricot and Burdock Syrup and Orgeat Syrup, which is almond-flavored. Most syrup recipes also feature a recipe for how to use that syrup to make a drink, and recipes using multiple syrups in each drink are interspersed throughout. The section on Egg Creams, Egg Shakes, and Ice Cream Sodas features dessert drinks and, along with the Cocktails sections, includes some recipes that contain raw egg. The straightforward sodas are more to my taste, and I’ve found a lot to like. I’ve been pleased with the fruit sodas. Less so with the recipe for Cream Soda.

I haven’t found making sodas at home to be less expensive than buying natural sodas on sale, but it’s fun to try an endless variety of flavors, mix them any way I like, and adjust the sweetness to my taste. I keep a couple of syrups in containers in the refrigerator and break out some ice cubes and seltzer whenever I want a soda. If you find some of the soda recipes too sweet, you can just reduce the sugar in the syrup. Want more flavor? Just add more. Diabetic or low-carb? You can make the soda syrups with stevia. “Make Your Own Soda” is well-designed, with nice photos, glossy pages, good organization, and easy-to-follow instructions. The recipes run the gamut. Though it’s unlikely anyone will like all of these flavors, there is something here for everyone.

Race in a Bottle: The Story of BiDil and Racialized Medicine in a Post-Genomic Age, by Jonathan Kahn

At a ceremony announcing the completion of the first draft of the human genome in 2000, President Bill Clinton declared, “I believe one of the great truths to emerge from this triumphant expedition inside the human genome is that in genetic terms, all human beings, regardless of race, are more than 99.9 percent the same.” Yet despite this declaration of unity, biomedical research has focused increasingly on mapping that .1 percent of difference, particularly as it relates to race. This trend is exemplified by the drug BiDil. Approved by the FDA in 2005 as the first drug with a race-specific indication on its label, BiDil was originally touted as a pathbreaking therapy to treat heart failure in black patients and help underserved populations. Upon closer examination, however, Jonathan Kahn reveals a far more complex story. At the most basic level, BiDil became racial through legal maneuvering and commercial pressure as much as through medical understandings of how the drug worked. Using BiDil as a central case study, Kahn broadly examines the legal and commercial imperatives driving the expanding role of race in biomedicine, even as scientific advances in genomics could render the issue irrelevant. He surveys the distinct politics informing the use of race in medicine and the very real health disparities caused by racism and social injustice that are now being cast as a mere function of genetic difference. Calling for a more reasoned approach to using race in biomedical research and practice, Kahn asks readers to recognize that, just as genetics is a complex field requiring sensitivity and expertise, so too is race, particularly in the field of biomedicine.

Review

Jonathan Kahn's approach offers an airtight analysis of the commoditization of race in pharmaceutical development, and Race in a Bottle should be of interest and deep concern to numerous audiences.

(Ruha Benjamin, Boston University)

Jonathan Kahn has produced a major and unique contribution, giving readers a 'big picture' understanding of this vital issue by integrating empirically grounded analysis of real controversies into a detailed conceptual roadmap. This is a substantial piece of scholarship and will be of interest to anyone concerned with the escalating, even geometrically expanding use of the concept of race in science and medicine.

(Troy Duster, University of California, Berkeley)

Jonathan Kahn is the undisputed Hercules Poirot of biomedicine. His unraveling of the nonsense, non-science, and complicated illogic that allowed the vasodilator BiDil to be approved by the FDA exclusively for 'black' patients is as compelling a read as any good mystery. This riveting book details what happens to scientific method when profit motive drives the marketing of a drug to the extent that its curative properties are touted as race-specific―even when they're not. Genetic variation in humans has no correlation to the shifting historical meanings of race, yet pharmaceutical companies continue to force the square peg of social category into the round hole of scientific fact. Race in a Bottle is a brilliant deconstruction of the kinds of thought processes that make for bad policy, bad medicine, and ultimately endanger our health as a species.

(Patricia Williams, Columbia Law School)

Jonathan Kahn brilliantly exposes the stunning truth behind new race-based medicines: they are driven by market incentives, not scientific evidence. Based on meticulous research and astute analysis, Kahn constructs a gripping, devastating portrait of profit motivating the use of race in genetic research and pharmaceuticals. Race in a Bottle is absolutely essential for understanding why the myth of biological race has reemerged in genomic science and biotechnology and how it is distorting research, damaging pubic health, and undermining justice in our supposedly post-racial society.

(Dorothy Roberts, author of Fatal Invention: How Science, Politics, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-first Century)

Kahn expertly weaves together the legal and ethical ramifications of continuing to pursue racialized drugs.... No background in health sciences or genetics is necessary to understand this work.

(Library Journal)

[Race in a Bottle] tackle[s] one of the most important concerns pertaining to race facing our society today.... Must-read material.

(New Scientist)

An extraordinary book.... I highly recommend it.

(Osagie Obasogie BioPolitical Times)

Mr. Kahn deserves credit for teasing out all the daunting complexities behind these events, including the details of genetic analysis, the perils of racial determinations, and the minutiae of patent law.

(Abigail Zuger, M.D. New York Times)

Kahn's book should be required reading. At a time when the ties between scientific researchers and the pharmaceutical industry are becoming ever more entangled, Race in a Bottle provides valuable insights into the consequences of these connections for health and health care - and, importantly, for what passes as knowledge.

(Lundy Braun GeneWatch)

A powerful saga packed with engrossing twists and turns of plot and filled with food for thought and debate on the politics and health implications of racial perception.

(Midwest Book Review)

Finely crafted and written.

(Alejandra Suarez PsycCritiques)

[Kahn] seems as much at home discussing epidemiology and drug marketing as he does the history of US race relations and the intricacies of patenting.... Magnificent.

(Dr. Martyn Pickersgill The Biologist)

A compelling account of a fascinating case.

(Anne Pollock Bulletin of the History of Medicine)

Race in a Bottle is lucid and energetic, with fascinating and little-known evidence about clinical trials, the federal regulatory and patent systems, and the history of racial classification.... Kahn offers a heartfelt and persuasive case against allowing race to be reduced to biology.

(Jennifer L. Hochschild Journal of American History)

[Kahn] skillfully uses the story of the drug BiDil... as the backdrop for examining the expanding role of race in medical genomics, even when the same science has called the existence of race into serious doubt.

(Aravinda Chakravarti Nature Medicine)

Highly recommended.

(Choice)

[Jonathan Kahn's] rich portrayal of the changing meaning and uses of race in the wake of genomics makes this book a 'must read' and 'must assign' for all sociologists of race and ethnicity.

(Sociology of Race and Ethnicity)

Insightful book on race and public policy; must-read for health professionals
By Molly
This is a fascinating book on race and public policy that deserves a wide readership, especially among health professionals, professionals-in-training, and biomedical researchers. Kahn is a law professor who previously had an N.I.H. grant to examine racial classifications used in the U.S. census, so he has expertise in the area where biomedicine, law, and politics collide. Kahn's ground-breaking detective work uncovered the real story behind BiDil, a combination medicine famous as the first drug marketed specifically to African Americans. Far from being race-specific, BiDil began as a ploy to extend the life-time of a patent and evolved into a niche marketing strategy. "Race in a Bottle" is an inside story: Kahn testified at the FDA hearing that approved BiDil (he recommended approval but for everyone, not as a race-specific medicine). In the end, BiDil was a flop, and its story is only the entry point for Kahn's analysis. The trend in genome-based research is to attribute racial health disparities to genetic causes, with the "fix" being race-tailored medicines. With wit, insight, and exceptional clarity Kahn demolishes claims for race as biology and reveals the confusion between social/political definitions of race (which are very real) and biogeographical ones (which are generally unscientific). The confusion is maintained because, on the one hand, it's profitable for the pharmaceutical industry (and required for NIH-funded research), and on the other, it distracts from the real causes of health disparities rooted in structural racism and the market economy. Kahn's many examples are drawn from medicine and pharmacology. For instance, there's a longstanding belief among physicians that race is an important determinant of warfarin (anti-coagulant) dosing, and this is reflected in the algorithm used to figure the correct starting dosage. What actually determines warfarin response are genetic variants (SNPs or single base variants) present in all populations, and these can be identified by genotyping. With that information there is no need for "race" as a proxy based on population allele frequencies; in fact it is medically dangerous to assume that an individual will have a genotype based on "race." and it is pointless to include it in the algorithm. This book is vital because BiDil is not a fluke; other "race-specific" medicines are in the wings. Research on the cause of health disparities is crucial, but as Kahn shows, nearly all of these are due to the social consequences of racism, many of which affect health. Kahn urges "care of the data" by which he means choosing a definition of "race" appropriate for a study and explicitly described. He ends the book with helpful recommendations for changes in policy and research practices.

Children with complex learning problems (CLP) need to learn important language and academic skills. These children are often in situations that may not be meaningful to them and hence are too complex for learning to occur. Due to the importance of understanding and telling stories for all children, Nurturing Narratives was developed as a story-based language intervention for children. The model emphasizes comprehension, “tailors” language to the child’s developmental level and stresses social engagement. The acquisition of language and literacy skills is embedded in a variety of story-related activities. The book includes: • A detailed description of the model • Guidelines for implementing the intervention • Instructions for creating materials • Supportive materials such as goals and sample stories

From Booklist
*Starred Review* PreS-Gr. 3. There aren't many books that make human physiology accessible to preschoolers. Rockwell's message is the joy of physical activity, but she also does a great job of connecting exercise with detailed information about the body and how it works. The design is clear and inviting: first are bright, colorful spreads of kids busy on scooters and rollerblades, running, stretching, catching and throwing in the park; then come full-page diagrams of skeletons, clearly labeled and packed with exciting scientific facts. One page shows kids using their muscles on a bar; opposite is a diagram of the body's muscles, from biceps and ligaments to the Achilles tendon. One page describes "your incredible brain," which sends messages at lightning speed along wire-thin fibers called nerves; opposite is an anatomical diagram of the brain. The lungs, the heart and blood vessels, and the stomach and intestines get the same treatment. In an afterword to adults, Rockwell talks about the problem of overweight children and makes an enthusiastic pitch for healthy physical fun. Doing the activities on these pages is certainly a place to start. Hazel Rochman

Well-written children's health book
By Nola
What a super book. It is kid friendly and makes learning about our bodies fun. The pictures and wording are both age appropriate. My grandsons (ages 3 & $) are both gaining from the book and love to see what happens to their food. It also has a great message to keep your body moving (that thing called exercise). Kudos to the author!

The Busy Body Book for elementary age children
By Karyn W
This is a great book that introduces many different systems in the body while emphasizing that keeping active is so important for your body to work better. Using your muscles makes them stronger instead of wearing them out it tells us. The illustrations are detailed and colorful and the book is fun, overall, with an important underlying message to encourage children to stay busy and healthy.

Concepts Presented in an Age-appropriate Way without Being Dumbed Down
By Redheaded Runner
Filled with lively illustrations of kids of all ethnicities, sizes and abilities happily engaged in physical activity, this book is a geared for the pre-school/early elementary school crowd. Rockwell brings the workings of the human body down to a youngster's comprehension and vocabulary level without dumbing down the concepts. For example, when describing how the brain and nervous system work, she writes, "Messages travel back and forth, at lightning speed, along wire-thin fibers called nerves." That truly is it in a nutshell, right?!

As a former teacher I also appreciate the inclusion of diagrams throughout the book. Well labeled diagrams of the systems of the body (skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory and digestive) enhance the main content of the book. The earlier kids get accustomed to reading diagrams, the stronger their reading comprehension skills will be - think about how often we have to read diagrams in our daily lives.

The Busy Body Book is a fun resource for teachers to use in their classrooms for units about the body and for lessons about how to read diagrams. Families will enjoy sharing the book before heading outdoors for a physical adventure.

Sky Island (Dover Children's Classics), by L. Frank Baum

This captivating tale by the "royal historian of Oz" recounts the further adventures of a little girl named Trot and Cap'n Bill, an old sailor, after their visit to the Sea Fairies. A remarkable fairyland in sky country, Sky Island turns out to be a place that Trot, Cap'n Bill, and their friend — a little boy nicknamed Button-bright — were glad to leave after having experienced some unpleasant moments there. Transported by a magical umbrella that whisks the three travelers off to this island in the sky, they meet the six snub-nosed princesses, discover the King's treasure chamber, encounter a blue wolf, meet Tourmaline the poverty Queen and Rosalie the Witch, and eventually make the long journey home. A charming addition to Dover's successful line of Oz books, this volume will delight long-time Oz fans as well as newcomers to L. Frank Baum's realms of fantasy. 86 black-and-white and 12 full-color illustrations.

Sky Islands review
By A Customer
Being a L.Frank Baum fan, I loved Sky Island. It is a enchanting book with the main characters as a charming little girl named Trot and a kind sailor-by name Capn' Bill. I loved this adventuras book, which involes a magic umbrella and a exciting run-in with some blularoos. I wont give the book away, but if your are thinking about giving this book to a child- (being 14 myself) I still love reading it, and its definetly worth the money and time.

Baum works magic in this little-known series
By Cammie Lou
Much as I love the Oz books (and I have all 14), THIS is my favorite Baum book. Sky Island is the continued adventures of Trot and Cap'n Bill (meet them in "The Sea Fairies", also fun) and Button Bright as they face the mighty Boolooroo of the Blues and the beautiful Queen Tourmaline of the Pinkies, Sky Island's two countries and two races. A wonderful tale, which in the process shows us how to get along with those who are different from ourselves.

Baum Back in Top Form
By John A Lee III
I was a bit disappointed with the SEA FAIRIES, Baum's first book to introduce the characters of Trot and Cap'n Bill. It was adequate but not up to the superlative quality I expect from L. Frank Baum. This book, however, sets things to right. It reads more like the Oz books and even includes characters such as Button Bright and Polychrome who make numerous appearances in the Oz series. It is a fun book that I enjoyed even with my youth far behind me.

In this story, Trot meets Button Bright who has a magical umbrella which takes him where he wants to go. Trot, Button Bright and Cap'n Bill decide to use the umbrella to take them for a picnic out on an island just off the coast. Instead of being taken to that island, however, they wind up on and island in the sky inhabited by tow warring peoples. Our characters wind up in the middle and have to set everyone straight.

It is a delightful tale which should appeal to both boys and girls.
