Appalling Translation of a Masterwork

On pain of death, I beg you not to save a few bucks by buying this translation of Goethe's masterpiece. This dusty, Victorian--era translation is opaque, humorless, and turgid. I can think of no greater disservice to a great writer. Obviously Dover picked this translation because it is in the public domain, and they did not have to pay for it. This is a great stratagem for holding down consumer costs, but it comes at a high price in terms of enjoyment. The absence of critical apparatus also detracts. There are much better translations available, especially the one from Princeton University Press. That one costs more but is well worth it in the long run. In short, though, you should buy anything BUT this boring miscarriage.

The masterpiece.. as it was

I must beg to differ with the reviewer who describes this translation as "dusty" and "turgid" - the fact is that this is an extremely old (Anna Swanwick, 1858) translation of an even older book. The language of the original (I must assume) would be as dusty to Germans as this translation is to us. Anyone expecting a snappy new American translation will be disappointed, but if that is what you are looking for, you will not find the real Faust.

I think that it is valuable to have a translation that comes from the same era, and actually recreates the original, rhymes, anachronism and all. There are newer ones, of course: the Princeton Press version the other reviewer mentioned, by Atkins, is hopelessly unpoetic. You could certainly read it faster, but at what cost? Kaufman's translation looks good, but between it and Swanwick I would say that it is a matter of taste - neither appears to be "superior." Jarrell's seems to me to be less true to the original German, and unrhymed to boot.

I think this is probably the best translation if you are at all inclined towards the Victorian style. Your best bet is to take a look at excerpts from all the translations and pick the one that works best for you.

This is the definitive book from which all Faust or books relating to the Faust storyline are based. Much is lost in the translation from its original German form, however, the story is timeless no matter what language it is in. Goethe writes a gripping tale from which many lessons can be learned. Anyone who loves great classic literature should make this a must read.

About the Author
Arthur Machen (1863 1947) was born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon in Wales. Horror master Arthur Machen's crowning achievement, a still shocking compendium of interwoven short horror tales. In late 19th century London, a scientist and an unpublished writer join forces as amateur detectives in an attempt to solve a minor but puzzling mystery which ultimately leads to the discovery of a truly diabolical conspiracy. In the course of their investigations, the two men find themselves repeatedly surrendering their attention to a series of seemingly outlandish tales spun by an assortment of eccentric story tellers. The stories, which all deal with imposture of some kind, are only tangentially related to each other, yet offer the somewhat bumbling sleuths important clues to the mystery at hand. Machen builds suspense slowly and methodically, masterfully leading the reader on to a completely unexpected, gruesome climax. Comical, tragic, sophisticated, violent, horrific, and even downright disgusting, THE THREE IMPOSTORS is a classic horror novel of sly deception and wit.

The 1995 Everyman paperback is the only critical edition of this remarkably rich book released to date, offering a scholarly introduction (by editor David Trotter) that carefully details Machen's main influences (chiefly Robert Louis Stevenson) and themes (imposture of various kinds, also derived from Stevenson). A short text summary nicely encapsulates the narrative's various twists and turns. An Excellently Presented Anthology

Arthur Machen can easily be described as one of the writers who provided the foundation to the 20th century fantasy and horror literature. This one is a great collection of horror stories, most of which has a quite Lovecraftian style. If you are new to Machen, and/or like stories with a tinge of "Mythos Horror" in them, you'll definetely like this one.

A Classic Horror Novel

This book is my first Machen. It is clear to me why he was an influence on Lovecraft - they are both masters of suspense and all things that slither. The three impostors are working for their master - looking for a man who has betrayed him. Thesr are the stories of the three impostors, used to locate their quarry in the city of London. The transmutations refer to these stories. The suspense builds as they hunt down their prey. I would recommend this to people who like Lovecraft and old fashioned horror. I enjoyed it immensely.

About the Author
Trevor J. Dennis joined the staff of Chester Cathedral in 1994, where he was Vice Dean and Canon Chancellor until his retirement in 2010. For nearly 12 years before that he was tutor in Old Testament Studies at Salisbury and Wells Theological College. During his time at Salisbury he wrote two books on Old Testament narratives, Lo and Behold! (1991), and Sarah Laughed (1994), and these were later followed by two volumes exploring Old Testament stories of encounter with God, Looking God in the Eye (1998), and Face to Face with God (1999).

Amazing

The CD audio book of the Return of the Native actually deserves to be described as amazing. The lyrical prose of Hardy, combines with the incomparable voice and performance of Alan Rickman, to make this a genuine treasure.

Rickman, in his limited interviews, has repeatedly referred to himself as an instrument. In this product, the only part of that instrument he could utilize was his voice. It is more than enough: the pictures and action spring vividly to life. Listening to his performance is sheer joy, and it rapidly makes you realize how little his capability has been tapped by film - where the whole "instrument" is utilized.

I would give this product the highest recommendation.

What a Delight

First, I must confess to being an avid Alan Rickman admirer. The man could read the local phone book and I'd gladly pay to hear it. Thusly, when I found he had done an unabridged set of audio tapes of one of my favorite books -- "The Return of the Native" -- I was thrilled.
"The Return of the Native" is a compelling and beautifully written story. I especially like the way Hardy makes Egdon Heath itself as much a character in the story as the human denizens of the area, breathing life into it through his wonderful word pictures and his special talent for creating moods. Hardy's vivid descriptions and excellent character development make this an enchanting adventure.
Add to this the velvet-smooth voice of Rickman, and you have a treat for the imagination and the ears.
Rickman gives each of the characters his (or her) own separate voice, and manages to do so without forgetting how each should sound. How he kept it straight, I'll never know (I, myself, record books on tape for an educational company and know how complicated that can be!)...what with the many inhabitants of Egdon Heath he had to work with...but, he did. Rickman also actually sang the songs from the book (and not badly, either), adding another dimension.
"The Return of the Native" (unabridged) is a must for anyone who loves good literature on tape, and for anyone who is a fan of Alan Rickman. This is a stunning production and well worth the investment!

Classic worth listening to

This is the third time I've listened to this audio book, something I have never done before. I must admit, it gets better ever time. The description of the characters is incredible - when have you read a whole chapter describing an individual? Or the landscape? Certainly way more verbose than modern style, but the observations stand the test of time, and paint pictures that linger. None of the characters is flawless, and the errors of omission in their acts toward each other results in no end of misery. But the view of life in another time, with all its physical differences and all its emotional similarities to ours is intrigueing. And Rickman is fabulous, capturing accents and personalities that reading myself in my cozy chair in Phoenix Arizona would never have known.

Clear Directions

This book is great for someone who has a little experience with baskets already. Someone with no experience can follow as well, but some of the techniques are a little bit harder than in standard basket weaving. The instructions are pretty clear, and if you thouroughly read them, then you shouldn't have any trouble. Overall, this book makes a great addition to a basketweaver's library, and I'm glad that I bought it.

A beautiful little reference for any level basketeer.

This book is a reprint of the original 1903 version. The writing and comments are charmingly dated. The photos are clear, even though in black and white. The instructional drawings are easy to follow.

This will be my reference book for great designs for years to come.

The book was orginally published in the early 1900's this is apparent by the dialect of the text. The information about the different styles of baskets is very interesting, however the photographs as an aid in constructing them leave something to be desired.

Thorough and with a good lay out

Having just started a travel clinic, I was keen to have a read through this textbook. It is thoroughly written bij experts in the field. A very helpful chapter on how to start and market a travel clinic proved quite useful; it gives practical tips on how to do this. The layout is beautifully done with maps and tables, made with attention to detail.
I liked the sections on "Aircraft cabin environment" (bits on air filtration, cosmic radiation and inflight medical emergencies) and the four chapters on travelers' diarrhea.
What I missed was detailed information on how to manage vaccines and the cold chain.

All in all a very useful book. Since it is the first edition, hopefully the next edition will have some more information on the vaccines for future buyers.

Varied Problems Yield Good Refresher

This collection of numerous problems in both old atomic theory as well as (slightly) more modern theory is a great review to students who may have taken introductory QM classes and need a refresher, or as a supplement to those students currently learning QM. The topics covered are varied and problems include complete solutions. Overall a good volume to include in any early theorist's collection.

This is one of the most complete problem and solution book for the undergraduate quantum physics I have seen. Don't be disappointed by the look of this book, although it is printed somewhat unusual i.e cheap paper small fonts but, its complete.

The problems are much like the problems you can find in quantum chemistry or quantum mechanics books( undergraduate) and the solutions are clear and concise. Of course prior knowledge in quantum mechanics and physical chemistry is required but that you already have if you are looking for a solution book parallel with your text book.

At the beginning of every chapter some explanation and key points are given that help to recall from text book without opening the text book.

I would say, its cheap and its almost complete for undergraduate in physics and more than complete for undergraduate in chemistry.

Its been covered that its a good Quantum problems book, but I really can't read it. I knew it was old, but it looks like it was done on a type-writer. Can't fault them though, Caveat Emptor.

"No one ever had common sense before John Locke," said Bertrand Russell, chauvinistically adding, "and no one but Englishmen have ever had it since." Commonsensical or not, Locke produced two masterpieces of profound importance: An Essay Concerning Human Understanding and Two Treatises of Government. In The Cambridge Companion to Locke, 10 eminent Locke scholars systematically survey his philosophy, amply demonstrating (as editor Vere Chappell remarks) "the vitality and quality of current Locke scholarship." No student of Locke will want to ignore it.

The first essay discusses Locke's life and times; the last essay discusses his far-reaching influence. In between, fully half of the essays are devoted to topics discussed in Locke's Essay. Locke's theory of ideas is expounded by Chappell, who hints at its importance by remarking that the word idea is the most frequently used noun in the Essay. It is puzzling that there is no complete essay here on the renowned distinction between primary and secondary qualities; fortunately, the concept is clearly explained in Edwin McCann's excellent essay on Locke's philosophy of body. Jonathan Bennett struggles valiantly to squeeze as much of Locke's philosophy of mind as he can into one essay; the result is useful if cramped. Other aspects of Locke's thought are not neglected; in particular, his moral thought and political theory receive careful treatment from J.B. Schneewind and the late Richard Ashcraft. A good introduction to a great thinker

I just wanted to counter the review of the first writer on this book - this companion to Locke's thought is pitched extremely well between the needs of the new reader and a Locke scholar. Each of the articles are accessible, providing an interesting take on each of the subjects tackled. They are certainly not a simple read, however, and the reader is required to make an effort to understand the different strands of argument being discussed. The difficulties of understanding are far from insurmountable and the reader is provided with a sense of achievement in reaching a useful understanding of each subject under discussion. The articles cover all the major areas of Locke's philosophical work (with perhaps an emphasis on his epistemology and metaphysics) and there is an excellent biographical sketch. There is also a fine bibliography of Locke's works and related scholarly material. This book is a useful and informative introduction to Locke's thought. It does require an effort of understanding, but this effort is well-rewarded.

Like others books in the Collection of Cambridge Companion, this volume on Locke's philosophy is too difficult to for new readers and too simple and general for scholars that already knows the basics of Locke's thought. Moreover, of the diffeents essays pubblied in this Companion, some are very usefull for a wide and general look. I think it's a good tool to graduate students looking for exapnding their knows on the political theory of XVIII century.
