About the Author
Bruce Manning Metzger (1914-2007) was the George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. He was the author of hundreds of articles on Bible translation, textual criticism, the Hebrew Bible, the Apocrypha, and the New Testament. He published numerous books, including The New Testament: Its Background, Growth, and Content; The Text of the New Testament; Manuscripts of the Greek Bible; A Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament; Lexical Aids for Students of New Testament Greek; and The Canon of the New Testament. He was the general editor of the New Testament Tools and Studies series, The Reader's Digest Bible, and The Oxford Companion to the Bible and was on the editorial boards of the International Greek New Testament Project, the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament, the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Good, could have been much better

I was hoping this book may give some insight into Metzger the person and Metzger the spiritual being. Instead it is a set of experiences related to his life as a scholar, which is very interesting reading in its own right and I recommend the book on that basis, but don't expect much insight into Metzger's inner self, apparently he can't even ditch his scholars cap when talking about himself!

Fascinating

Most octogenarians have reminiscences, but very few are as interesting as these! The exacting memory and precise eye for detail which made Metzger the dean of thsi century's textula critics also makes him an ideal figure for mining his wealth of experience. This memoir goes from his Pennsylvania boyhood to the ivy league halls of Princeton Theological Seminary, where Metzger spent more than 50 years as a student and professor. He gives us a candid insider's view of the great Biblical translation issues of this century. A good read.

Loved It

There is a lot of truth in the above criticism. But, Metzger the human being is fleshed out many times in the book. Sure, it is not a psychological or spiritual manifesto, but I did feel I was acquainted with Bruce Manning Metzger by the end. His humility and integrity shine forth from every page. I thank God for him.

About the Author
Isabella Lucy Bird (1831-1904) was a nineteenth-century English traveller, writer, and a natural historian. Bird finally left Britain in 1872, going first to Australia, which she disliked, and then to Hawaii (known in Europe as the Sandwich Islands), her love for which prompted her second book (published three years later). While there she climbed Mauna Loa and visited Queen Emma. She then moved on to Colorado, then the newest member of the United States, where she had heard the air was excellent for the infirm. Dressed practically and riding not sidesaddle but frontwards like a man (though she threatened to sue the Times for saying she dressed like one), she covered over 800 miles in the Rocky Mountains in 1873. Her letters to her sister, first printed in the magazine Leisure Hour, comprised her fourth and perhaps most famous book, A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains. Bird's time in the Rockies was enlivened especially by her acquaintance with Jim Nugent, a textbook outlaw with one eye and an affinity for violence and poetry. "A man any woman might love but no sane woman would marry," Bird declared in a section excised from her letters prior to their publication. Nugent also seemed captivated by the independently-minded Bird, but she ultimately left the Rockies and her "dear desperado" Nugent was shot dead less than a year later. At home, Bird again found herself pursued, this time by John Bishop, an Edinburgh doctor in his thirties. Predictably ill, she went traveling again, this time to the far east: Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia.

High adventure

This is one of the best known and most highly respected travel accounts of a foreigner to the western region of the United States during the 19th century. Isabella Bird, a spinster world traveler, upon returning to her native England from an excursion to Hawaii, decided to stop in America and make a three-month tour of the Rocky Mountain region of Colorado. In a series of letters written to her sister in England, Ms. Bird told in fascinating detail her experiences during this "tour."

Going by train from San Francisco to Cheyenne (except for a brief hiatus near Truckee Pass, which she traversed by horseback), she was in Fort Collins, Colorado, by September 10, 1873. Her travels took her to Denver, Colorado Springs, South Park, Boulder, and Estes Park, where she climbed Longs Peak. Her observations, whether about the people she encounters or the natural wonders all about her, are acute, objective, and highly personal. She will complain about the annoying insects in one letter and then calmly relate taking a tumble off her horse when surprised by a bear in another. She is astounded by the natural beauty of the region and never seems to get enough of it; she also believes, as the saying then went, that "there is no God west of the Missouri," and that the "almighty dollar is the true divinity" (these observations made while in Denver). She recognizes the (especially) English prejudice against all things American, and refuses to go along with it. What makes Ms. Bird's book so enduring is the direct though lighthearted tone she maintains: she is an astute observer but never gives the impression she's "studying" the people or places she sees. The book can be read often and will remain entertaining each time. It's a classic - in a good sense of that word. Highly recommended.

Life in 1873

In 1873 a middle-aged Lady Bird, acklaimed horsewoman, spent the fall through winter travelling in the Rocky Mountains. As a 10 year resident of Colorado Springs and growing up riding, I was intrigued by her travels. What most people find amazing about this book are her very detailed and beautiful descriptions of what she saw. I have to agree, I did find myself wallowing within what she saw. Especially, since I have seen many of the places (in modern day) that she went. What I, myself, found truly interesting was how she describes in her rather off-hand, like it's mundane, way about the daily hardships she and the settlers had to endure. This isn't the old Grandpa had to walk 10 miles, up hill, in 10 feet of snow, in 60 below weather, both ways to school. It's a true representation of what "Grandpa" had to endure. It breeds a new-[t][/t]found respect for our ancestors and makes one wonder, "Could I endure it?".

Wonderful American West adventure book - and a lady hero!

This is one great book! Adventure - the wild times in 19th Century Colorado, and it's all told by one heck of a lady!
Men will enjoy the book, but it will be an inspiration to young women today!
I bought a copy years ago - lost it after some time. I HAD to buy another copy for my library! It's that good.
I bought a copy for my grand daughter who is 16... hoping it will inspire her to greater things in life.

"Years Of Uneventful Operation Usually Occur Before A Hazardous Condition Is Recognized."

"Guidelines for Engineering Design for Process Safety" is a comprehensive introduction to inherently safer industrial processing plant design. Published by the Center for Chemical Process Safety, it covers everything from plant design (including a brief but very useful "Inherent Process Safety Checklist," pp. 44-46,) to equipment design, materials selection, piping systems, heat transfer fluid systems, process monitoring and control, electrical hazards, sources of ignition, fire protection, deflagration and detonation flame arresters, explosion protection, effluent disposal systems, and documentation.

The book focuses on hazard mitigation and managing unavoidable hazards. Optimally this book would be consulted prior to building a new plant, but has much of value for those working in existing plants as well. I thought the quotation from p. 343 was quite insightful: "Years of uneventful operation usually occur before a hazardous condition is recognized." So often people equate low accident rates and safety, but this book dispels that notion, and latent failures are covered in detail. One feature I particularly like about this book is the great list of references at the end of each chapter that deal specifically with that chapter's material. This is so much more helpful than a single giant reference section at the end of the book.

Chapter six, "Piping Systems," is one of the best in the book. Not only does it discuss theoretical and practical design constraints (the book is especially strong on welding, gaskets, and flanges,) but discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different types of joints and valves with an eye toward reducing fugitive emissions, discussing fire safety and EPA requirements in the process. The hazards of bellows are also well covered, as are expansion joints and the issues inherent with them (e.g. squirm failure, etc.)

Chapter nine, "Process Monitoring and Control," is also outstanding. The discussions of process sensitivity and process hazards, and redundancy and diversity of instrumentation are excellent, and the "Instrumentation and Control Checklist" on p. 293 is short but valuable. The discussions of automation, safety considerations, and interlocks are very lucid, and safety professionals from many diverse industries would benefit from reading this chapter.

Chapter eleven, "Sources of Ignition" was another standout. This is an extremely complex and all-encompassing chapter. Many of the items discussed early in the chapter are of a fairly obvious nature (e.g. ignition from open flames, electrical sources, etc.) In short order the chapter delves into much more complex issues, and has perhaps the best discussion of autoignition I have ever read. My eyes were opened to ignition sources I had not ever considered: p. 342 gives a wide range of nonpyrophoric items that may autoignite at room temperature or less in certain circumstances. These items varied from ferrous oxide to fish scraps (ignition was highly variable to initial conditions.) It's this kind of unintuitive information that makes this book such a valuable reference to safety managers and engineers.

Though published in 1993, this is still an extremely useful reference to people working in the process industries, especially the chemical and petroleum industries. I now focus on aviation safety, but there are more similarities than dissimilarities, and I found the book insightful. I was previously the Production Manager for a chemical manufacturing company, and I wish I owned this book then. I recommend it highly for those concerned with safety in any type of processing environment.

Sandi Doughton; Paul Revere of the NW! A Most Excellent Read

Sandi Doughton is like the Paul Revere of the NW warning us about a very real and present danger. In Full Rip 9.0 we are being given data that allows us to make informed decisions. This book is a must-read for every household in the NW.

Although I have science degrees coming out of my ears, I am usually bored silly reading non-fiction. Sandi Doughton's book is very well written, easily readable, and scientifically sound. I can't put it down.

I've followed earthquake activity for the last decade and am on the USGS site daily. We've been privileged to have the ears of emergency management professionals that started talking about this subject back in '95. Still, I always believed I knew and understood just enough to be dangerous. Because of Full Rip 9.0, I feel like a person who is legally blind that has been given a pair of glasses that allows them to see clearly. I get it!

Back in '95, we asked the professionals we talked with why the information they were telling us wasn't public knowledge. Among other reasons, they said that they didn't want the public to panic but that when we begin to hear about it spoken openly in the media, we'll know that the officials are beginning to sweat. This week, the news said, "This isn't and "if" it's a "when"." Still, people are not listening and have lulled themselves into a false sense of security.

The Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission wrote a long report that was recently reported upon in our news. The bottom line was, "Oregonians as individuals are underprepared." Even with our limited knowledge, for the last seven years, we have worked diligently to get our church and friends to have 72 hour packs for their cars (ours are 2 week'ers), and at least a two month supply of food and water at home. Though a few have listened, most have not done so.

News articles said, "In Portland and the Willamette Valley, water and sewer would be out for a month to a year and electricity a month to three months. Most businesses would shutter after two weeks to a month because of the outage. On the coast, those utilities could be out for a year or several years, the study found."

Several years.

Think of that. Much of the NW would be catapulted back to the early 1800's! This is a very real threat. I will absolutely be spreading the word about this work.

Earth-shaking tales about the quake to come

Sandi Doughton's excellent "Full Rip 9.0" offers an eye-opening description of the massive earthquake scientists agree will someday wreak havoc on coastal cities in the Pacific Northwest. But it's far from a dry scientific warning of what's to come. Using her superb storytelling skills, Doughton vividly describes the dramatic evolution of discoveries that led seismic experts (who once thought the Northwest was a seismic quiet zone) to realize the region sits atop a complicated powder keg of plate tectonics. "Full Rip 9.0" also offers a look at the outsized personalities of the scientists (from a wide array of fields) who pieced together this geologic puzzle. It's a great read -- although I wouldn't make it your summer beach book, unless you already have a tsunami evacuation plan.

Reads like a good mystery

Sandi Doughton doesn't use dry statistics to explain the discoveries since the 1980s that have revealed the devastating scale of past Pacific Northwest quakes and tsunamis. She's written much of the book like a mystery novel.
For example, chapter five about the elusive Seattle Fault begins with hints of all Doughton will delve into: "The story of what is now called the Seattle Fault began in the 1960s with a refugee from behind the Iron Curtain and a bunch of high school students. Decades later, scientists followed a trail of clues from the Olympic Mountains to a sewage plant on Puget Sound and an eerie, underwater forest in Lake Washington. . .Then in 1985, the once-obscure fault offered a tiny taste of what's to come. . ."
The "what's to come" portions will make you downright jittery. (It promoted me to check my emergency supplies. Water? Check. Food? Check. Gin? Check.)
Hiking this morning along a Whidbey Island beach, I found myself taking a few moments to scout the best way to higher ground if there'd been shaking. Doughton wrote that experts say you shouldn't wait for some kind of official tsunami evacuation warning. If you feel the earth quake, head for higher ground.
Then she includes one of many glimpses of the personalities of the people she interviewed, something that makes the book especially readable. No-nonsense hazards expert Patrick Corcoran says, "If you want to sit around and argue about it, go right ahead. I just hope you haven't bred yet and you're out of the gene pool."

Social Rules for Kids Book Review

What happens to you when you don't know or understand the social rules? Thousands of kids with Attention Deficit Disorder could tell you exactly what happens. People don't have conversations with you. Friends are something that other people have. School is a painful and difficult place. Bullies love to pick on you. Others don't realize that you have feelings. Your body language is off, so you are left out of social situations. Manners are a mystery. What can a kid with ADD do to get around these social obstacles?

Social Rules for Kids-The Top 100 Social Rules Kids Need to Succeed by the author, Sue Diamond, gives the answers to that question clearly and concisely. This book came into being as a response to a student's needs. Ms. Diamond, a licensed speech pathologist, has taken the time to develop practical rules to help children communicate socially with others.

This book is kid-friendly. The language is positive, simple, and directive. Its format is easy to follow. There is one rule on each page. The rule is in bold print at the top of the page. Then, there is a simple justification for the rule. After that, there are concrete steps listed to implement the rule. At the end of the rule is a bold print "remember" statement. This restates why it is good for the child to apply the rule.

Using this kid-friendly format, each chapter addresses different groups of social rules:

Chapter 1-"Talking and Listening" discusses the proper way to greet people. Beginning a conversation and sustaining it has several rules devoted to it. Attention is paid to taking turns in conversation. One rule tells kids how to tailor their topics to their audience.

Chapter 2- "Friends" tells a kid how to make a friend and to keep that friend. People who make friends easily, as a part of their daily lives, might not know that there are many components to making friends. You need to choose an appropriate friend and learn how to nurture the friendship. Eighteen rules help kids learn to make and keep friends.

Chapter 3-"School" lets kids know what to do to be more socially successful in school. Three of the rules, numbers 39 thru 41 tell how to accomplish academic tasks. These rules do have useful information about writing, math, and reading. While doing a good job on your class work can be helpful socially, I don't feel like these academic cues are actually social rules. Clearly, the rules telling students not to be a "tattle-tale" and that middle school students don't play tag are social rules, and very useful ones, too!

Chapter 4-"Bullying" lets kids in on the secrets about not becoming a victim of a bully. It is worth the price of the book! Rules in this chapter address reactions to teasing and ignoring the annoying behaviors of others. It explicitly talks about behaviors that bring kids attention from bullies and how to avoid those behaviors.

Chapter 5-"Feelings" explores this sensitive subject in a variety of contexts. Dealing with change, new situations, and the feelings that come with these life experiences is handled in a practical manner. Making choices, accepting consequences, and working through anger have their rules to help a kid live a happier and more productive life.

Chapter 6-"Body Language" is an important chapter for kids who don't have a good handle on using body language to understand others. Some children with ADD, have difficulty with this aspect of communication. Many of them would be well-advised not to be a "space invader." Again, this chapter alone is worth the price of the book.

Chapter 7-"Manners" are not emphasized in today's society, but good manners should always be in style. Manners are the oil that can smooth positive interactions among people. Some kids develop manners through observation and imitation. Kids with ADD are usually too distracted to do this. It's not that they want to be less than mannerly. They didn't learn manners the same way that their peers did, and they need to have them taught directly. This chapter does that. Topics that range from phone manners and making a good first impression to apologizing and responding to grief are covered. It's an important chapter for success at school, a job, or life in general

There is also a complete list of the rules. Following that inclusive list are lined pages where kids can write their own rules. These can cover novel situations that they encounter. What a great idea! This lets children think about rules in their daily lives. As they pay attention, they become more able to formulate and follow rules.

This book was designed for children between the ages of about 7 to 14. As we say in academia, "It has wiggle room." The book could be effective for children who are younger or older than the target ages. Cartoons at the beginning of each chapter are quirky. I liked the clean format. It is not cluttered and distracting. The language is simple and direct. This book doesn't just tell why a kid should do something about a social skill. It offers a method for improving their social skills.

Helped my Special Snowflake

I like that this book is written on a level that a child 7+ can read and mostly understand alone. This book is helpful for any child struggling with social skills, shyness, or relating to others. I assigned pages over the summer for my child to read and then we talked about it. It helped that it wasn't me, but the book saying certain things. I've even used this book in parenting moments, instead of repeating myself just open the book to "No means No." This book covers about every possible social situation from elementary to middle school. My kid is on the Autism Spectrum, and this book is perfect for him. I couldn't believe how apt the rules were. I even learned some things myself! (Middle schoolers do not play tag. Did not know that!)

I'm so grateful this book was written. It's put in a very accessible way--I can say to my kid, "Read one rule today," and he does it. And often is still reading rules 10 minutes later.

Beware NOT PADEREWSKI edition! False advertising.

Beware!!! This is not the Paderewski edition, I just received this book. I heard Dover no long print the Chopin Paderewski edition. The new book will not be the Paderewski edition. It is a big difference, look carefully at the book, the cover does not indicate Paderewski. Don't be mislead by the false title description of this product.

If this can be any edition, can be a good deal, but if you need Paderewski edition, this is not. I am not sure amazon understand the difference.

About the Author
Stan Berenstain (1923–2005) and Jan Berenstain (1923–2012) were a husband-and-wife cartooning team best known for creating the internationally beloved Berenstain Bears. Both born in Philadelphia, they met on the first day of art school, and were married after World War II. Inspired by their children’s love for Dr. Seuss, the Berenstains created a cartoon version of their own family, and with The Big Honey Hunt (1962) began a series that would stretch to more than two hundred volumes. My daughter, who is almost 5, loves everyone of these books about the Berenstain Bear family. This one is no exception. I love the way the authors make it so effortless to teach life's lesson while sharing books. I highly recommend them to any parent, whether a first time parent or an experienced one.

A Marvelous Story!

Emma Smallwood is the tutor's daughter. Her father has a school for boys--The Smallwood Academy. Together they're trying to run the academy after Emma's mother died two years ago. But now they have no students, Emma's father is melancholic and therefore not motivated to try to win new students.
Emma comes up with a plan and writes a letter to the Weston family. Two of their sons attended their academy a couple of years ago and Emma is hoping that the younger two sons will also attend their academy.
When a letter arrives from the Weston family, Emma and her father are invited to come to their manor in Cornwall to privately tutor the two youngest sons. Father Smallwood is exited and is looking forward to a new environment. Emma, on the other hand, is dreading to meet one particular Weston son--Henry, because he played a lot of pranks on her when he lived with them.

When they get there they are not expected and come at an inconvenient time. Nevertheless they are welcomed in the manor and bedrooms are hurriedly prepared.
Soon Emma will find out that someone is playing tricks on her. She is also hearing someone screaming in the night. On another night she's hearing someone playing the piano. And then she's hearing a story about a ghost who is hunting the manor...
Every member of the Weston family acts strange... they are hiding something, but what? Is there really a ghost? And who is trying to frighten Emma?

When Emma finds out about the family secret, will the pranks stop then, or will they get worse? And who of the Weston brothers will win Emma's heart?

I loved how Julie took me away across the pond to life in Cornwall. I also loved the mystery in this story. At first I thought I knew who played the tricks, but later I would begin to doubt and in the end I found out I was completely wrong!
The characters are well developed and easy to sympathize with. The tenderness and romance are sweet... overall a marvelous story! Well done, Julie!

With shades of Austen and Bronte, Ms. Klassen has written this sweeping tale set in 19th century Great Britain. This novel gives you those delicious social class problems that only regency can give you and gothic settings reminiscent of Du Maurier. Emma Smallwood is a woman the reader will come to know well and love. I really like how Klassen tries not to let you know who the hero will be in the end, so I won't give away his name, but frankly, after meeting him you can't but love him as well. The Weston family--boy do they give Emma a run for her money with their mysteries and interesting ways. She stayed with that family far longer than I ever would. Spiritually, Emma has to learn to surrender to God; that she can't control every thing and every situation, and that ultimately you just have to trust God to work out situations. This novel has quickly become one of my favorites by Ms. Klassen, and I look forward to reading it again and again. Highly Recommended.

The Tutor's DaughterAs the back of the book states, in this book a young lady and her father, both teachers (private boarding tutors), are invited to be live-in tutors of two teenage boys. The family is know by the lady, Emma and her father, Mr. Smallwood, because they previously ran a type of boarding school whereby the two older brothers of the teens, namely Henry and Philip, had attended years prior. At that time, Emma's mother had been alive and Emma was a young girl--about 10 or so. It is with one of the two older brothers, now adults, that a romance springs with the heroine. The plot is intensified by the mysterious goings on that take place, much of which ends up happening to Emma.
The story is interesting and I do enjoy the writer's story telling skills. We are able to travel--through her pages--back into history, and visit a time and place that is very different from who we are now in the 21st century...and though I would not want to have lived during that time, I suppose if one needed to exist then, this house would not have been the worst of the lot. Well done. I do have some problems with the story - which is why I'm giving it 3+ and not the 4s or 5s the other reviewers have. It is related to the lack of proper reason for Emma being the brunt of so much hate and malice AND a lack of satisfaction regarding how she handled the various situations.

I felt Emma should have reprimanded Julian and Lizzie on numerous occasions--and ensured that they were properly dealt with--after all they're both under 18 years old--BUT she did not. An example: Lizzie was caught in Emma's room reading her diary and Emma did nothing save express some sort of vague sounding reproach. I felt that Emma should have brought the matter to the attention of Lady and Sir Weston...it is their home and the young lady is their ward and was indeed of instruction regarding ethical behavior. The reason the writer gives is that Emma was accustomed to handling things herself--and decided to do just that. Pish tosh...needless to say she didn't handle it.
Winning the medal for most annoying outcome however: is the LACK of punitive penalty that Julian, Lizzie ended up with. In light of all of the emotional and psychological abuse that was heaped upon Emma as well as a final act that amounted to attempted murder, I would have thought the writer could have done better at sewing up those two. Julian being sent away for assignment to some sea post with the mere HOPE of rehabilitation is not a penalty for attempted murder! Lizzie going back to her mother is fine--but I felt she needed to be given a good talking to and some type of punishment fitting her role in the whole mess.
Adding to the injury is that if Julian felt any remorse, we the reader were not aware of it. He appeared defiant and his character appears to be set in cruelty and wickedness--for no real reason. There was no real reason other than Emma stuck her nose in...which does not match the level of evil perpetrated against her. These issues in my opinion HINDERED the story...and didn't find enough resolve at the end to overcome them.
